Why is Janet Jackson's Janet the best Michael Jackson album since Thriller and the best Madonna album since..., well, since ever? Perhaps it's because Michael's kid sister is the only one of these three aerobic video stars with enough smarts to realize that sex, hooks, and beats are all that matter in this field of lightweight dance pop. Or perhaps it's because the sexuality Janet radiates through her sweet melodies and hip-tugging grooves is so much more credible than Michael's arrested prepubescence or Madonna's nothing-personal-just-business comeons. After her embarrassing posture as a sociocultural analyst on 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814, Janet has returned to her strength--using her odd mix of girlishness and maturity to make dance numbers about personal relationships ring exceptionally true. Even so, the 75-minute, 27-track Janet doesn't really work as an album; there's too much filler and the between-song transitions quickly grow tiresome. The album is full of killer singles, though, starting with such proven cuts as the extremely slinky "That's the Way Love Goes" and rock-guitar-driven "If," and featuring such future hits as the Prince-like "This Time," the Motown-like "Because of Love," the breathy ballad "Where Are You Now" and the inspired Stax cover, "What'll I Do. --Geoffrey Himes

Different -- delightfully so.......2007-08-03
I didn't get a chance to read all the reviews posted for this album, so if someone already said this I apologize for the repetition. Are you aware that this is the de facto first opera ever written in Europe? Hildegard was a visionary in so many ways! Her music is very different and unique when compared to other operas. I highly recommend it.
Simply awe inspiring and amazing.......2007-05-20
One would have to listen to this music to understand the power it will hold over you. Ethereal and almost eery, yet full of power, grace and triumph, this will be a mainstay in your collection. The only thing resembling it that the mass public would be aware of is Gregorian Chant, although this is it's own beast and so much more. It's not expensive, buy it and see for yourself.
Ecstatic Music, Ecstatically Performed........2007-05-13
I had first heard this performance of St. Hildegard of Bingen's "Canticles of Ecstasy" on sound cassette and loved it.
The music is sublime. The female voices are heavenly, without a hint of sentimentality.
When you listen to "Canticles of Ecstasy" you will know how this medieval nun and composer felt about things.
Caution. They could make a believer of you.

This CD will transport you to another space and truly put you in touch with the sublime! If you are a massage therapist,I recommend it for use during your sessions. Anyone can use it as part of his or her meditative spiritual practice regardless of your particular faith.

This was the first janet album I ever bought and from then on I became a fan for life. This album is full of her hits from control and RN in addition to a hit from the janet. album and 2 new tracks. I love to play this album when I don't feel like switching to different janet CD's for hearing different songs. I don't think anyone's r&b/pop collection is complete without this compilation of some of the greatest pop music of our time.
Janet is a legend!.......2007-01-27
This CD is abslutely incredible. The one and only reason that I took one star off is because of the weird concept. It inclues all her hits from A&M records, as well as two new songs and "That's the Way Love Goes". I understand the reasoning, butit is still a bit akward.
Regardless, that doesn't take away from the fantastic music. It starts off with "Runaway" which is a classic Janet 'holiday' song in the vein of 'Escapade". The camera'click sound on each beat is very catchy and unique.
The next few tracks are from Janet's 1986 breakthrough "Control": "What Have you Done for me Lately", "Nasty" and "When I Think Of You". All classic singles that have the most seductive dance beats and attitude that makes Janet who she is.
It continues with four tracks from "Rhythm Nation 1814": "Escapade", "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do...", and "Alright" They all have futuristic, yet 80's pop beat to them which is the tone for the RN1814 album. Of course, they'll all extremely catchy. "Alight" appears in it's radio remix form, which is a nice little treat.
The album continues with two more "Control" tracks: The amazing "Control", and "The Pleasure Principle". Jimmy, Terry and Janet did great job on these. They are R&B classics that sound even better today. Next are "Black Cat" and "Rhythm Nation. The former is also in radio remix form which is a nice luxury. "Rhythm Nation" is basically the same as it's album verison, with the excusion of Janet's 'pledge speech' at the beginning.
The last four songs are slow jams, each from a different album. "That's the Way Lvoe Goes" from 'janet.' is J's biggest hit, and with good reason. The beat is so sexy, as are Janet's vocals. The groove is absolutely blissful. Next is "Come Back to Me" (RN1814), a fantastic soothing R&B ballad that sounds ahead of it's time. "Let's Wait A while" is Janet's first hit ballad (from "Control"), and it's a very sweet song about waiting to have sex. Last but not least is anoher new track "Twenty Foreplay" which starts off as a sweet slow ballad, and then changes it's tone to a straight-up funky, love-making jam.
All-in-all,this CD demonstrates what an amazing talent Janet Jackson is, and what pleasure it is to have her as part of he music industry.

Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women concerns four sisters in post-Civil War Massachusetts, but at times it feels as if its musical adaptation should have been called "Little Woman," so focused on a single sibling it is. Both Allan Knee's book and Sutton Foster's natural charisma and energy help constantly train the spotlight onto tomboy Jo. Yet it's not that much of a problem because Foster is strong enough to carry the show. She gets excellent support from the rest of the cast and especially cabaret artist Maureen McGovern, who as Marmee gets two beautiful ballads ("Here Alone" and "Days of Plenty") that are tailor-made for her imperial, burnished tone, and could well acquire a life outside the show. Composer Jason Howland worked as either musical director or musical supervisor on three period-set Frank Wildhorn musicals (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War), which gives him a distinct experience in dealing with the historical setting here. Although the score oftentimes veers to the bland side, Howland also shows encouraging signs of spryness ("Five Forever") and melodic confidence that at one point slyly honors Sondheim ("Astonishing"). Old-fashioned in the best possible way, Little Women makes a good complement to Wicked for those trying to entice a younger audience to the delights of the musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Love It!!!.......2007-06-27
My school is going to be doing this musical next spring so I bought this CD in order to prepare for it. I fell in love with the music. Much like the book, it is personal, tender, and real. Some songs are just so heartwrenching I want to cry (but maybe I am a little bit of a drama queen). Simply gripping, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves musical theater.
Beautiful and better than expected.......2007-05-15
I had heard so many mixed things about this show, and so I missed the chance to see it on Broadway. Well, now I am sure wishing I had seen it, because the story that unfolds on this CD is so beautiful and so reminiscent of the book I adored when I was a "little woman." I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying the joyous romp and sense of adventure that imbues this musical journey. Nearly every song captivated me, though I must admit it took a few passes before I finally embraced the entire score. Now I giggle with delight at the "Operatic Tragedy," "Our Finest Dreams" and "The Weekly Volcano Press." I also love "I'd Be Delighted," as Meg and Jo prep for the ball, and I adore Laurie's "Take a Chance on Me." Such passion! And the composers completely capture Jo's yearning to be something more in "Astonishing." Fantastic!
The ballads are simply gorgeous! I cannot get through Maureen McGovern's song, "Days of Plenty" without sheeding tears. And "The Fire Within Me" is likewise a heartfelt testamanet of love for one's family. So beautiful!
Open your heart, ears, and imagination to Little Women and enjoy the journey.
Good Idea Gone Bad.......2007-03-16
I loved the book Little Women, and I love musicals, but this CD did not blend the two well at all! I could barely get through the CD, there may be one or two songs I would listen to again, but not very often. It was difficult to see how these songs could do justice to the mood of the book. I feel that they hurt the story. I don't recommend buying this album.
What a BORE!.......2006-07-22
Saw the show in Washington and nearly fell asleep. Should never have been made. The score is dismall with a couple of all too brief moments of musicality, wisely given to Maureen McGovern. However, it's not enough to save this misguided mess. Skip the CD, pick up Jane Eyre, a musical version of a classic that works beautifully and deserved more success than it acheived.
Foster Showcase.......2006-05-06
Little Women is all about Sutton Foster. She does a great job, but as shown by the earily closing of the show it, one actress can't fix a flop. The songs in Little Women which tell a story or forward the plot of the show like "Weekly Volcano Press," "Astonishing," and "An Operatic Tradegy" are good and very entertaining, however a lot of the other songs in the show are stagnant. Basically any number without Foster or McGovern in it is not worth listening to. The show comes across as having good intentions. Though it has some good songs (I know people who have used some as audition pieces well), it does not seem to jump out at the audience at all.

I love this album. Janet delivers on every track. Four of my favorite songs on this album include If, Where are You Now, The Body that Loves You, and of course, Anytime, Anyplace. Janet clearly exemplifies that she is not afraid to sing about what is on her mind. A must have album. One of my favorites.
'Janet' May Well Be Ms. Jackson's Very Best. It's Definitely Her 'Sexiest'........2007-07-07
Is "Janet" her best CD? It's a tough call, but personally I would say so. Most fans would place this one among the top three of her catalog, right beside "Control" and "Rhythm Nation".
What really separates "Janet" from the other two is the maturity and plain SEXUALITY Janet exhibits here. "Janet" is SEXY without any signs of strain or pretentiousness. The entire CD just ooozes "Sex" with minimal effort. On "Control" the listener could hear and feel Janet trying hard to break free from her mold and mature into an adult. "Rhythm Nation" finds her more or less continuing that path with better results. But on "Janet" the CD just OOZES images that words like "Lust" and "Sex" can only barely hint at.
There are dance grooves to please the die-hard fan like "Throb" and "If". Of course for all you "Midnight Storm" fans who like their music soft, sexy and romantic, "Again", "The Body That Loves You" and "Anytime, Any Place" will certainly please. But my fav is still the first track released on the radio airwaves "That's The Way Love Goes". The song is perfect for "Quiet Storm" or the dance floor. The gentle groove just grows on you with repeated listens.
Some listeners HATE the 5 second to 15 second interludes between songs where Janet and her producers (Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) place filler and sound effects, but I LOVE those interludes, where one minute you can hear Janet moaning with pleasure or in the midst of coo talk with her lover.
This is probably Janet Jackson's most effortless CD and a joy to listen to. Released in 1993, it certainly has aged very well. It could easily be played on today's airwaves and still sound fresh and relevant. Definitely a MUST HAVE for any Janet Jackson Fan !! I hate to say it, but this release may have been Janet's last CD to keep. Starting with "Velvet Rope" you can hear the deterioration of the quality of songs, so "Janet" is definitely a keeper!
I guess the one difference is "Janet" doesn't grow on you immediately like "Control" or "Rhythm Nation" does, but it has longer lasting power. The songs just ease and ooze into your consciousness and stay there.

I've loved this album. The musics "Anytime Anyplace", "That's The Way Love Goes" and "This Time" are the best of this masterpiece. Janet really created a 'smoother' style sicne this album. For R&B lovers this is an "must have" algum.

This is still on of my all time favorite CDs...ever! It is a great make out CD. It is a great CD when I am feeling depressed. It is a great CD when I am happy & on top of the world. This is a perfect CD from a brilliant artist.

Janet really rose to the top of her game with this release. From the first track to the last, it simply flows....and you just groove right along with her. Virtually every single song could have been a single.

Her new music might be garbage but that's no reason to ignore this masterpiece of an album and whatever came before it. Hear this and you'll know who inspired ciara and the like, and did it better than her.

This album got a lot of good reviews when it was released and critics hailed it as janet's best work ever and hailed it a masterpiece of her career. Although the sales for this were pale in comparison to the precedor janet. , with time it has gone on to become a cult classic. Notice that people who criticize janet today are the same ones who hailed this album a classic and masterpiece. She definitely reached her creative peak on this album and it has stood the test of time. I can't believe it's been 10 years since this wonderful album was released. I think timing also had to do with slow sales from the start too. Had this album been released in 1996, it would have reached 5-6 million then instead of taking almost 10 years to reach that total, which I'm sure it has already.

I was also down in 9th grade, when this album came out. I feel like it spoke to me and helped me get over a loss in the family. A lot of questions that were going through my mind as an adolesecent were also addressed on this album. Stuff about self-worth, sexuality, loss, ups and downs, lonliness etc. And janet had much more spice than the spice girls ever did. She was real, she was raw and she put it all out there on this CD. People at that time liked together again and i get lonely but didnt' care for the CD like they did for the janet. album. Almost 10 years later, I see people who are lovers of r&b music calling it a classic record, which it always was.
Not her worst by a long shot, but she's starting to lose it a little here.......2006-11-24
Though The Velvet Rope did spawn a couple of bona fide Janet essentials with "I Get Lonely" and "Together Again", it also marked the artistic downturn of what was once one of the hottest careers in music. The aforementioned songs and a couple of others are pretty good, but only the most astute Janet Jackson scholars should find any JJ album after this one necessary.
2004's Damita Jo is OK at best, and 2001's All For You is the most woefully mediocre thing she's done since Dream Street.

Who cares what Janet Jackson did before this album, none of it was important. This was, as far as I am concerned, one of the finest non-Classical albums of the 1980s. It contains music I can still listen to and still feel excited about it. "Control", "Nasty Boys", "What have you done for me lately?" and "When I think of you" were amongst the best songs Janet Jackson and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (her producers and musicians on this album) ever released. Most of what Janet Jackson has done since seems very ho-hum to me - in "Control", she was a singer fronting a group of musicians - in later albums, she was a singer first and the instrumental music was incidental.
Control has to be heard and experienced through a good sound system. It needs to be considered in relation to what was around at the time. It needs to be danced to.
This music was "cutting edge" at the time and, considering how we've retrogressed, it is even more potent now.
One of masterpieces of Jam and Lewis.

My friends and I loved Janet Jackson's Control album when we were in high school in 1986-87. It contained 10 songs, 7 of which ended up charting on the American pop and dance charts, and was spectacularly successful in promoting Janet into the top league of international popular music. The strengths here were the strong rhythmic funk productions from Jam & Lewis, and the forthright lyrics and independent attitude adopted by Janet on this breakthrough disc. Check it out if you like pop/dance stuff and haven't listened to Janet's older albums from the 80's

I'll give it 4.5 stars, though I reckon 1989's Rhythm Nation 1814 and 1993's Janet albums are both even better.
She's In Control!.......2007-01-13
"Control" is actually Janet's third album, her first two, epnymous "Janet Jackson" from 1982 and "Dream Street" from 1984 were lacklusters before she had found her personality and her music started to sound like we know it. "Control" from 1986 would be the first worthwile Janet album and she would become a superstar over a night and not just Michael's babysister. Her attitude had changed on this album, and we'll see a tougher Janet that both is capable of Dance-pop numbers and slow jamz. Another big reason is that the material is also better here, Janet never had the strongest voice but the up and coming producers Terry Lewis/Jimmy "Jam" Harris would make the best of her and write/produce some of the finest songs of the time. 20 years later they are still her main producers and when you think of them, you'll also think of Janet. Janet serves as a female counterpart to her brother, few female artists could dance as well as Janet and her attitude was tougher then any other female R&B singer in 1986 aswell. "Control" would also have loads of top singles, out of 9 songs 6 were released as singles in US, and a few reached the top 5, "When I Think Of You" would even reach the top of the Billboard charts.
Most songs here are uptempos and that's what Janet is best at. "Control" is one of her finest songs, and gives further proof to the new grown up, emancipated Janet, The video of "Control" is almost as long as Michaels's longest videos and serves as a little film where Janet wants to have the control of her own life and choises. An uptempo and choreographic masterpiece part of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis plans to make the best of an so far under-apreciated artist. The song reached #5 on the bilboard. On "Nasty" she sais that she don't want Nasty boys, instead she want to be treated well. This is another dance-pop song with great choreography, even Paula Abdul appears in the video. It reached #3 on the charts. Next song "What Have You Done For Me Lately" follows the same trend as the other two and was also a big hit reaching #4. It's remarkable cause it was Janet's breakthrough single. Paula also appears in the video, she would be a huge star herself 2 years later!. "You Can Be Mine" is a midtempo, and one of few songs not to be a single. However the song is good nonetheless.
"The Pleasure Principle" is another cathcy uptempo and is one of only two songs on this album that wasn't penned by Lewis/Jam (It was written by Monte Moir from The Time). It was only a top 20 song but a great song just the same, but with all big hits of this album it's easy to get a little overshadowed. "When I Think of You" reached number #1 and is another dance number, but not as rhythm driven as the others and in slower pace. "He Doesn't Know I'm Alive" a ballad written by Spencer Bernard, put not a single and not one of the best. "Let's Wait Awhile" finds Janet singing a slow jam about waiting before making love, quite strange if you listen to later albums?. The song made it to the second position on the charts. It's perhaps her best slow jam with a truly romantic message. "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)" is the closer and is another ballad but neither one of this album's best songs.
Overall, Probably Janet's best album and the start of her long and successful career as we know it today. 6/9 songs here are famous and some are also among her best. "Control" is an excellent album and the first I would recommend if you want to take a look at older Janet albums, It also won loads of awards making it one of the years most successful albums. An 80's classic without a doubt.
20 Y.O. what's that?.......2007-01-08
THIS is what that new album was celebrating. The 20th anniversary of Control. This album is janet's landmark album that took her to great heights and made her the second biggest jackson superstar. Not only that, but it also set a blueprint for dance/r&b divas from then on: Jody Watley, Karyn White, Paula Abdul, Debbie Gibson, Mary J.Blige, TLC, SWV, Aaliyah, Mya, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Beyonce, Ciara, Cassie and a list that is going to continue to get longer. As janet said at the recent Billboard Awards performance "it's all about control, and I STILL got lots of it!" damn right janet!

This is really terrific. I listened to this album a lot in 1989-90 while all its hit singles were spinning into the charts and playing from the radio.
Janet Jackson was 23 when she made this excellent album, and it remains her best work. She had really good producers on her team, wrote strong social-comment lyrics, and made stylish videos , usually with squads of well-drilled dancers performing funk workouts in formation . The mission statement on Track 1 of Rhythm Nation is the dream of a "nation with no geographic boundaries... free from colour lines" and this admirable ideal is promoted on funky title tune. The lead single Miss You Much also funked out with a staccato beat and hit US #1 in October 1989. Further hits were also squarely in the dance/pop tradition , such as the upbeat Escapade, the happy-sounding Love Will Never Do ( Without You ) and the groovy Alright . Social injustice is highlighted on the rather-good ballad Livin' In A World ( They Didn't Make ) and the uptempo State Of The World , while the rocking number Black Cat really works very well, with its heavy rock guitar sound precisely capturing the song's raunchy sentiments. The Knowledge is an angular funk groove all about getting a good education. Janet's albums always balanced funky and smooth elements, so here we had the nice, stately love ballad Come Back To Me and the seductive bedroom tune Someday Is Tonight to represent the softer side of her music. Interspersed throughout the running order of the disc are sound snippets and fragments of commentary that help to link the songs together rather like a sound collage. A very good idea !
Every song here succeeds - that's why Rhythm Nation 1814 deserves a 5 star rating.

It takes alot for an artist to create a hit single or two, but it's quite another to create an album chock-full of hits that have endured for nearly 20 years (mind-boggling to think that much time has elapsed since this album's release!).
Just looking at the song titles, I knew just about every song without having to listen to a single note. When I played the CD, it brought me back to a time when originality was celebrated and encouraged in pop music. It also reminded me of a time when pop radio used to play these songs over and over again, yet I never seemed to mind because they just sounded better each time.
That all seems like another world today - to put it mildly!
One of the worst decades in human history was coming to a close and pop music legends were making the most of the moment by releasing great albums in 1989, alot of which had a common theme - social injustices and being on the threshold of something new (which we were): Phil Collins released "...But Seriously" that year along with Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence," Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever," Billy Joel's "Storm Front," and The B-52's "Cosmic Thing." The Fine Young Cannibals and De La Soul, among many others, also contributed to an end-of-the-decade blitz of great music. Janet Jackson added her own dynamic contribution with "Rhythm Nation 1814."
This album deserved all the hype it got (which, along with the original "Batman," got quite alot!). I remember the futuristic video for the title track on MTV (back when the channel did something revolutionary - they actually played music videos all day). I also vividly recall the intense radio airplay the majority of this album got over time (which is how I got to know this, minus the Interludes): "State of the World," "Miss You Much," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Escapade," "Black Cat," and "Come Back To Me."
Reading the reviews here on Amazon, it clicked that Janet accomplished something that's rare for dance music: She was able to include serious messages regarding social injustices (among other topics) alongside danceable tunes and the standard slow songs.
This is definitely Janet's masterpiece. It's a pleasure to finally have this in my collection. Her voice is soothing and the overall message is quite powerful. - Donna Di Giacomo
JJ's Best Album.......2007-01-24
This Album has got a bit of Every style of music on it...Rock, Dance, R'n'B, Funk and Pop. It is an awaesome album and spawned 7 Top 10 hits. It has a lot of Interludes 8 in fact, and 12 Original Tracks.
All of the songs are good, and even though I had never been a big fan of Janet Jackson, I am a fan of this Album. "Escapade" and "Love Will Never Do" were instantly reconizable once I heard them, and are Excellent Pop songs, and I remember them getting a lot of Radio play back in 89 when this album was released and also the following year. This album definetly has some of the best songs of her career.
Besides being A great Pop Mainstream Album, it is also a Concept album, that deals with the Problems of the World and Society. Many of the albums tracks deal with this. Songs such as "State Of The World" and "Livin' In A World They Didn't Make", whilst other tracks such as "Lonely" and "Come Back to Me" deal with lost love. Most of the Album deals with Poverty,Violence, Racism and the Ignorance and Perceptions that Society has.
My favourite songs on the album are "State Of The World" which deals with the homeless problem, Drugs and Violence in Society. Even though it has a dark message it is Very upbeat and a good song. "The Knowlege" preaches for you to find out about the things you don't know about and find the Truth in life so you can protect yourself and understand the world better, and is a nice little piece of Upbeat Funk.
"Love Will Never Do" was another Favourite of mine, and a big hit from this album. I love the way this Song starts with the Chimes and thumping and then it explodes into a Bombastic Pop song, with a great chorus that you'll be singing along to instantly once U recognise it. "Livin' In a World [They Didn't make]" is a Beautiful song about the Innocence of Children and how it hurts for them growing up in a Society that is corrupted by violence, and Hate, and how they could get sucked in to that and make the situation worse. It has some beautiful heartfelt and true lyrics. The song ends with a news clipping of an incident where a Gun man open fires in a California school playground killing himself and 5 children.This really makes you think about the way people act and the senseless violence that destroys lives, and how there is no need for it.
"Escapade" is another song I reconised right from the start with it's chiming bells and Pop feeling. Once again the Chorus will have you singing along with it. A totally Fun Track.
The Hard Rock of "Black Cat" is addictive and is a great reconisable song. One of the Album's Hilights. The Spanish tinged Ballads "Lonely" and "Come Back To Me" are Beautiful and Heartfelt, and some of my favourite tracks on the album. "Lonely" has a beautiful message to it and sounds very relaxing and the spanish guitars make it the perfect R'n'B Love Song. "Come Back To Me" is equally as good.
Overall I Enjoyed this Album, and Feel it is JJ'S best work. Any fan of Rock, Pop, Funk or R'n'B should have this in their music collection.
One of the Best Albums of 1989!.......2007-01-14
After the breakthrough album "Control" three years prior, Janet was back with another album with simular structure, "Rhythm Nation 1814", a concept album that partly deals with social injusticies (In particular State of the World, Living in a World, The Knowledge and most of the interludes) But many other songs are just strong contemporary R&B without being political in any way. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again produce the majority of songs and make it just as well as on "Control". Perhaps this album is even more mixed, with ballads, uptempo's and even some rock. Out of 7 single releases all made the top 5! and 3 would also top the bilboard charts. 7 songs from the same album reaching the top 5 became a new record. This album got as many as 20 songs, but removing the interludes there are only 12 actual singles. This is as far as I know one of the first if not the first album with interludes, something that would be commonly used in R&B and Hip Hop later on. But on this album the interludes actually does make sense and they are not just about Janet's ego like on latter albums. Before I'll go to the songs, this is obviously Janet's best album with "Control" and there are plenty of worthwile songs to enjoy here.
The first song a dance number "Rhythm Nation" where we'll find Janet dressed in a black military uniform in the video (just like on the album cover) preaches world unity among races and nations. Although Janet's singing here is below average it's a catchy rhythmic dance anthem nonetheless and a good opener that gives a clear message on what's coming. "State of the World" is simular and deals with very disturbing issues, but this song was only released for radio airplay and not as a single, too bad. "The Knowledge" continues with simular issues until the number 1 smash "Miss You Much" arrives and deals with more lightweight issues compared to the first three songs, basically Love. Next song is a ballad and it's called "Love Will Never Do", In the video we'll see a new sexy janet dance with a guy, simular to what her brother did on "In the Closet", Janet wanted to show other sides of herself on this album and prove she was no fluke. This song also reached the top of the charts even if it's hardly one of her more famous songs.
"Livin' In A World" is yet another slow paced social conscious song but it wasn't released a single. Next single "Alright" is typical for it's time with new jack swing and it also got a memorable video in 30's style. "Escapade" another number #1 is perhaps the most pop oriented song and in my oppinion best song of this album. This portay Janet at her peak where everything she did became a hit. "Black Cat" is pop/rock and also quite unique. Janet wrote it all by herself. "Lonely" a great ballad, not to be mistaken with "I Get Lonely" from a later album is just great and should have been a single. "Come Back to Me" (#2) is very simular and so is "Someday Is Tonight". All ballads.
Overall, What more can I say, this is Janet Jackson at her best. "Rhythm Nation" is one of her best albums at the peak of her career. Critics thought she was a fluke but instead she (with help from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis) would record an album that was perhaps even better then "Control". The concept doesn't really work since only half of the songs are part of it, but the hits!. 7 big hits in one album is alot, and for them this is a great purchase and a classic album aswell.

For many of us, Leonard Bernstein's first Mahler cycle for CBS (compiled here, remastered and cheaper than ever) has stood the test of time since it initially came out on LP in the late 1960s. Upon completing this traversal of nine symphonies (and the "Adagio" movement from the unfinished 10th), Lenny and the New York Philharmonic achieved something no one else had and proved that Mahler was, simply put, worth recording in the first place. It's still a marvelous set of recordings that belongs in every record collection.
Using the same budgeted design as on their (surprisingly pricey) Original Jacket series of box sets, Sony has unleashed a true bargain here: 12 CDs that average a little over five bucks a pop. Lenny's second cycle for Deutsche Grammophon may boast greater sonics, plenty of wonderful moments, and the complete song cycles, but it costs more than twice as much. Here, we get a younger Lenny, sounding fresh and expressive and delivering still-unparalleled interpretations of the First, Third, Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth, and pretty great performances of the rest. The intensity on these discs is infectious and the price can't be beat. A must-have. --Jason Verlinde

Groundbreaking but partly outdated.......2007-03-26
Recorded 1960-67, this is the first complete cycle of Mahler's numbered symphonies (1-9 + no. 10 Adagio), and, as such, an essential purchase. Add Bernstein's 1966 classic recording of Das Lied von der Erde (Decca), and you get a piece of recording history: the development of the Mahler boom in the sixties.
How do these recordings stand today? The interpretations of the third, fourth, and seventh are very fine, even exceptional, and, despite their age, the recordings are sonically impressive as well. NYPO plays marvellously. The seventh, in particular, is a reference disc.
The remaining recordings are not really for the desert island, however. The fifth, for instance, is very unsuccessful and badly recorded too. Bernstein's later account on DG is clearly an improvement. The same holds for the second symphony, which you also find on DG in a later, much improved and moving interpretation. But here we have also a crowded field of classic performances, such as Klemperer's second (EMI) and Walter's fifth (SONY). Both are preferable to Bernstein's recordings, old or new.
The first, sixth, eight and ninth are quite good but not exceptional. No one beats Kubelik's first (DG). Mitropoulos (BMG Great Conductors) and Barbirolli (EMI) own the sixth. The eight - well, here we have Horenstein (BBC) and Mitropoulos (Orfeo) as classic, first choices. And for the ninth, Ancerl (Supraphon), Barbirolli (EMI), Klemperer (EMI) and Walter (SONY) sound far more attractive and fresh than Bernstein's mannered account.
If you're a collector this box is of course essential - regardless all critical considerations. But if you just look for an excellent and consistent Mahler box, go for Gary Bertini's cycle on EMI, which you get for a super-bargain price. It's a contemporary and future classic.
Thus I recommend a pick of individual Bernstein SONY CDs: the third, the fourth and the seventh. Add his fifth and second from his DG recordings, and his 1966 Das Lied von der Erde (Decca). These recordings are what I take to be the "essentials" of the Bernstein Mahler legacy.
Outstanding Mahler Compilation.......2007-01-29
I think is very important for a Mahler Fan to hear carefully all his work. This compilation allows you to enjoy that experience. A better sound quality for some symphonies could be a great plus, but you have to consider that this is a remasterized old record.
Leonard Bernstein just express the true passion that Mahler put on his work. It's incredible that (using the 8ve Symphony as an example) with fewer instruments than in the Abbado version, the feeling is even better. Simply outstanding.

Bernstein or Tennstedt: read on...........2006-07-12
If the only way you could obtain the Mahler Symphonies was by buying a box containing them all by one conductor, then this would be my second choice, or my first!; my first (or second)would be the Tennstedt set. It's a close call thoughout - a 'swings and roundabouts' situation, but if Bernstein's was the one and only then I would be happy enough. Actually if you want a truly satisfying Mahler Symphonies collection then the two sets together sitting side by side on your CD shelf would be pretty well ideal, as I believe that the legacy of recordings by these two great men are nowhere surpassed (save Horenstein in the Fourth, Barbirolli in the Sixth and Rudolf Schwarz in the Fifth). As to comparisons between individual symphonies, the following would be my first choice:
No. 1 Bernstein. More poetic and earthy than T and my very first choice out of the dozens of others I've heard.
2 Bernstein. Simply the greatest Mahler 2; T is earthbound by comparison.
3 Tennstedt. Actually this is a tougher one to decide as B is marginally better in the first movement and he produces the best sixth movement of any version I've heard. Overall T has it, partly due to the excellent sound quality.
4 Overall B is better but there are so many points of comparison to take into consideration that it's a tough one to decide. T has the better soloist in the finale. My far-and-away first choice in the Fourth is Horenstein on EMI/CfP.
5 Tennstedt. Bernstein's CBS Fifth was the weakest link. However, Rudolf Schwarz (Everest) produces the very finest Fifth:
I always maintain that you can tell pretty much straight away when a Mahler conductor gets it right and Schwarz gets it 100%
6 Tennstedt. From the angry crunching heavy tread of the opening through to the nightmare ending, this is a very dark view of the Sixth, but it works. Barbirolli on EMI is my definite first choice in the Sixth. Bernstein's quick-march approach sounds like parody.
7 Bernstein. Nobody has produced a better Seventh and probably never will. T's version is very good though and I think he out-performs all other competition.
8 This one is the hardest of all to separate, but in the end I opt for Bernstein as his version as the feel of a live performance and the recording is almost as good as T's digital one.
9 Bernstein. Again my favourite version. T's weakest link of his whole set.
So Bernstein scores more points, but take into account the generally better sound of the Tennstedt set (especially in nos. 3,5,6) and things are evened up slightly. My advice overall? Go for both sets; at the asking prices you will have a superb Mahler Symphonies collection which will last you a lifetime. But don't forget those other versions of 4, 5 and 6. A point about sound quality: most of the above are analogue recordings, made many years ago, but across the board they are in almost every way superior to most modern digital ones (though to be fair one or two are not so great). I have a very good stereo system which reproduces very neutral sound; what goes in at the CD player end comes out unchanged at the loudspeaker end and so what I hear is the 'real thing'. For example Bernstein's 2 is stunning. One of the very best is the oldest of them all - Schwarz's Fifth, made in 1958. Maybe the art of recording has been replaced by science (and not for the better)? In the final analysis, to my mind the above versions render most of the rest of the Mahler symphonies discography redundant and surplus to requirements.
Comparing the two Bernstein Mahler cycles.......2006-06-27
Most buyers aren't in the market for a complete Mahler cycle by a single conductor, but if they were, the two from Bernstein contain many great performances. I've reviewed the contents of this Sixties cycle on Sony and the later one from the Eighties (contianing many live performances) on DG, taking them one symphony at a time. But it's worthwhile to give a sense of the strongest and weakest parts of each set.
Cycle #1:
By general consensus the performance of Sym. #3 is one of the glories of this cycle and perhaps the most inspired Mahler condcuting Bernstein did on disc. It has all the freshness of discovery--LB was new to Mahler in 1961. Sony's 20-bit remastering makes the original analog sound quite good. In fact, there's no need to fear the sound quality of these NY Phil. recordings, none of which are bad. Expect the deep sound stage and wide stereo separation that Columbia Records favored at the time.
Bernstein also put his stamp on Sym. #7 in such a way that no one would ever hear it the same again. Previously, 'The Song of the Night,' as this work was dubbed, had almost no life either on disc or the concert stage (a Mahler champion as prominent as Bruno Walter never performed it). Not only did LB prove that this was coherent music, he made an unforgettable drama out of the Seventh. This is his signature recording of the work.
Two other great performances stand out: Sym. #2 and #4, each rendered with amazing imagination and a huge range of emotions. The accusation that LB went over the top in the Second is unjustified--he is often tender and delicate--but there's no doubt that he takes an apocalyptic view of the finale. Whatever you think about his approach, he single-handedly revolutionized the way that the Resurrection Sym. was played. In Sym. #4 the classic recording was by Bruno Walter, but LB added more depth, imaginaiton, and excitement. Lyric soprano Reri Grist has come in for a good deal of criticism in the vocal finale, but I think she fits beautifully into LB's overall conception.
In the middle of the pack, as it were, we get LB's readings of Sym. #1 and #9. He went on to conduct greater readings of both works, especially the Ninth. In person LB's First was a real showpiece, but somehow Sony's sonics are not up to the conductor's vision. In the cse of the Ninth, the NY version would qualify as an outstanding performance if there weren't so many truly great ones from Karajan, Bruno Walter, James Levine, and Barbirolli, among others. Bernstein himself would add two of the greatest, both on DG.
I find a few problems wiht Sym. #5, #6, and #8 in the first cycle. For many critics all three are great recordings. For some reason, I have never warmed up to either of LB's versions of Sym. #5, where for once he does manipulate and exaggerate to the point that the spirit of the work seems lost in histrionics. Sym. #6 is too brisk in the first movement to let the music expand to its visionary potential, and in the other movements Bernstein seems less expressive than he could be. The Eighth is unmathced in the excitement and joyousness of Part 1, and for some listeners the whole symphony remains on that exalted level. I find that LB is too studied in Part 2, and my attention wasn't held. He does elicit very beautiful singing and playing, however. It should be noted that this performance is with the London Sym. and a host of fine English singers.
To the end of his life Bernstein resisted Deryck Cooke's completion of the Tenth Sym., agreeing to conduct only the shattering Adagio. which Mahler had essentially finished in full score. Bernstein's reading with the NY Phil. is one of the most searing accounts this magnificent fragment has ever received, equaled by his later live reading with the incomparable Vienna Phil.
Cycle #2:
It should be said right off that DG's digital sonics are in a different league from what LB got in New York. Even though several venues were involved (Vienna, Amsterdam, New York), and many recordings were under live concert conditions, the DG engineers triumphed. They favor closer mike posiitons, solo highlighting, and a vivid sound stage compared to their predecessors in New York. As to the interprettions, with a few exceptions--the most prominent being Sym. #6--Bernstein did not drastically change his views from the first cycle, and in some cases the readings feel almost identical (Sym. #2 and #7, for example).
The most interest centers on the works where LB clearly outdoes his younger self. At the top of the list I would put Sym. #6 and #9. In the former he achieved one of the classic Mahler reacordings of the modern era. His Sixth has slowed down by 2 min. in the first movement, giving the music room to expand properly. The Andante is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. The finale is an explosion of genius on Mahler's part that LB resonates with perfectly. Almost the same can be said of the Ninth, where the conducting reaches deeply moving areas of expression. The finale is drastically slow (as is Levine's, to similar devastating effect), which some critics find excessive. But it's a truism that no tempo is right or wrong; everything depends upon being drawn into the world of the music. LB achieved a great Ninth but would surpass himself with a live performance from Berlin in 1979, also on DG.
Almost as great is Sym. #1, which on DG receives a flawless performance packed with excitement. I'm not sure that LB's reading actually changed, but the superlative sonics and the spine-tingling playing of the Concertgebiuw weren't matched in New York.
The next thing to ask is where Bernstein fell short of his earlier versions. The Sym. #2, #3, and #4 from New York were one of a kind, representing LB's early and most exciting explorations of Mahler's world. Their counterparts on DG are also strong, but I don't think they rise to the heights he achieved earlier. The only sharp criticism I have is with the use of a boy soprano in the finale of the Fourth; musical as he is, a boy is too undeveloped to capture what Mahler intended. It should be said, however, that if the earlier NY versions didn't exist, these would be outstanding performances.
I feel much the same about Sym. #7, where LB's first recording set a standard that only two or three rivals have come close to, but his DG remake, which was a return to the NY Phil. in oncert from Lincoln Center(as are Sym. #2 and #3), feels fractionally less overwhelming. It's in better sound, however. The one symphony I can't compare is the Fifth, which doesn't satisfy me in either cycle. The DG version with the Vienna Phil. convinces many listeners, and some critics call in unsurpassable, but I am not on its wavelength.
That leaves Sym. #8, which Bernstein didn't live to record for commercial release. DG reached into its vaults for a live 1975 radio tape from Vienna, and although it has flaws in execution, including some rough singing in Part 2, LB's conducting is superlative, more ocmpelling than his version from London. Paired with this symphony is a 1974 reading of the Adagio from Sym. #10, also with the Vienna Phil. As you'd expect, it's an inspired, searing reading, just like the NY version.
How ot sum up? If money were no object, I'd own both cycles for the pleasure of Bernstein's unqiue inspiration. If I had to pick and choose, I'd take Sym. #2, #3, and #4 from New York, Sym. #8 from London, and the rest form the DG cycle.

I always enjoyed the film version of "Birdie" as well as the soundtrack and now this reissue includes "The Sultans Ballet" where Janet Leigh bites off more than she can chew when she invites a group of Sultans(Shriners) to dance. There are a couple of minor inclusions including "We Love You Conrad" and the rehearsal of "One Last Kiss" My only question is why didnt they use the complete version of "A Lot of Livin To Do" Even with the additional tracks the CD clocks in at 46 minutes so space wasn't a problem. It's quite understandable why the Russian Ballet was not included since it would be out of place on an otherwise perky and bright score.
While "Bye Bye Birdie" may not be one of the best scores it is zesty and cheerful to listen to on a gloomy day and as one of the numbers suggests it helps you to "Put On A Happy Face"
Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack.......2006-07-01
The product itself is excellent, but: 1) it took about three weeks to arrive; and 2) we didn't realize the film cut out and added so music. What we needed was a soundtrack for the stage production.

Solid cast recording brings back the light-hearted msuicals of the 50s and 60s. Used as the primer for an upcoming stage version of the show, we listened frequently, and haven't tired yet.
