Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2005-08-24
The lyric, music, and performance is exceptional. All songs by Joe Lynn Turner are superior. This is the best performance from JLT he ever done in the past decade. It is worth to have it.
Nikolo Kotzev still carries the spirit of the 80's in 2003.......2003-11-27
Nikolo Kotzev is arguably the most talented rock/metal musician from Bulgaria. Even though he lives in Finland, we get to hear his Balkan roots on some of the albums and that'a big plus. His knowledge on music theory, orchestration, and song arrangements as well as his composition skills and guitar playing make him a very complete musician. Lots of killer 80's musicians like Joe Lynn Turner, Glenn Hughes, Goran Edman, John Leven, and Ian Haugland have participated in his Nostradamus project and 80's hard rock band Brazen Abbot. The latter is an excellent band that keeps the spirit of the 80's with a slightly more updated sound. But no where on the CD does Kotzev compromise his rock roots; and the musicians all serve their purpose right.
Jorn Lande, one of the rising stars of the new generation, also appears on Guilty As Sin and he delivers his vocals with tons of emotion, anger, and sentiment--as always. Joe Lynn Turner takes on a completely different role and identity whenever he works with Kotzev; and his performance is absolutely stunning! Kudos to Kotzev for pulling out the best of him every time. John Leven's bass is fiery and to the point as it was 15 years ago. He's lost nothing from his rich bass context. Goran Edman is Kotzev's special choice; he is the only singer that has taken part in each and every Brazen Abbot album.
The compositions are pretty standard (but not boring!) 80's songs, and while they do not overstep the genre much, I feel they have a great feel to them that makes them sound honest, warm, and poignant. Kotzev is one of the few guitarists out there that does not suffer from ego problems, and he fills the tracks with melodic guitar solos only when need be. Also more attention is focused on the amazing singers' vocal deliveries, another aspect of the production. They do use keyboards (Mic Michaeli) but not to overpower. The piano ballads and sparse use of keyboard textures develop the songs. Haugland's drumming is fantastic: very well mixed and very complementing. Lande's voice is so fitting. I'm glad Kotzev and him have chosen to work with each other again, and we'll hopefully be hearing more from them in the future. Guilty As Sin is recommended for melodic hard rock fans that are into the music and feel of the music as opposed to the image. Kotzev's musical vision obviously requires depth in songwriting and honesty in performance, both of which are largely available on this disc.
Bulgarian Rock!!.......2003-11-14
Wow! This album is fantastic. Imagine a band whose sound is reminscent of every 1980s rock band ever to leave a lasting impression. I'm taking about big names like Guns N Roses (there are some killer guitar solos), Journey (the lead singer sounds a lot like Steve Perry), and so on. Track 10 (Eve) is very Harry Chapin-esque, if you appreciate that sort of thing.
Take this album on a road trip! It's another one I discovered I can listen to from beginning to end without skiping tracks.

Customer Reviews:
Great mix of singers and music.......2007-02-25
Joe Lynn Turner was my main point of interest in buying the Brazen Abbot CDs. I find out very quickly that Vikström and Edman are excellent singers also. The musicians on this album are all incredible and the songs really are great. Sometimes when you get that much talent in the room the band suffers but not here. I would recommend this to anyone who loves melodic hard rock.

Outstanding.......2000-05-12
This EP is the best release by the Swingin' Utters since "The Streets of San Francisco".
This EP, only six songs long, is great in that in such a small sampling, you hear the broad range of the Swingin' Utters' sound. There is the melodic and extremely catchy "Brazen Head", "From the Observatory" and "Twenty-Three", the fast paced and furious "Something Sticky", "Movers and Morons", which has the best guitar work of all the songs, and "Smokestack Dreams" which incorporates elements of Irish folk music.
While I still hold "The Streets of San Francisco" as the model by which I judge every Swingin' Utters release, I recommend this EP to people that have not heard much or anything from this band, as it is a cheap and worthwhile introduction to this excellent band. This is the ideal purchase for punk fans of all kinds, especially those that enjoy 70's English punk and the sounds of modern punk bands like Rancid and the Dropkick Murphys. You will not be disappointed.
Utters make good again.......1999-06-26
The Swingin' Utters have been playing "streetpunk" for a long time now, long before it was in vogue as it is now. Having been together for such a long time has paid of in spades. Like the Clash before them, the Utters have retained their street sound, but have also managed to put some growth in their songs. Long times Pogues fans, the band have always experimented with, dare I say it? Irish folk and "Smokestack Dreams" is a great example. It sounds like it could have come straight off the Pogues "Hell's Ditch", it's that good. I have always liked Johnny Bonnel's contributions and "Something Sticky" reinforces that opinion, Max Huber also puts in a pair of favorites, "Brazen Head" being my pick, and of course, Darius is always at his best. I feel the Utters are not just a great streetpunk band, but a great BAND, period. They have grown in a genre that usually keeps bands stagnant...cheers to the Utters, may we hear from them for a long, long time.

classical music for headbangers........2001-10-30
there is some music which really just rules, and it's a shame that no one is going to hear it. that's definitely the case with this cd. i first heard it last winter and have been trying to hunt it down ever since. the music is intense, a lot (if not all?) of the text is in english but spoken by a german, and really, german sounds scary anyways. this is scary music. it rules.

Customer Reviews:
The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13
The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?
