Here's the deal...........2007-05-16

You have to understand how different the music was back in the 80's when this was made. Slick, overly produced, heavy keyboards along with the guitars. Everyone had a big sound to go along with their big hair! It was the decade of excess and everything was over the top and overdone. I can't blame Heart for surviving in the 80's. Look at Rod Stewart, he went from doing Maggie May to closing out the 70's with Do Ya' Think I'm Sexy. Yep, old rockin' Rod did disco and even Kiss did a disco song with I was made for Lovin' You. It's called surivial in the crazy world of the music biz. Sometimes you have to roll with things and adapt to the times in order to keep working and selling records. I'm so glad Heart did this even though it was hard to swallow after growing up with them in the 70's and loving their work. Heart and Bad Animals not only saved their career but it launched them into the next stratosphere. Besides, you can still hear and feel their talent streaming through these polished-up songs. Not at all their best work, but I'm so glad they were able to keep going and save their career. Just get Alive in Seattle on DVD. No matter who they play with, Ann and Nancy are two very talented ladies. Rock on...

Started off great.......2006-08-03

I really enjoy Heart's music, particularly their "hairspray and synthesizers" material from the 80's, but I must say I was a bit disappointed with their 1987 album Bad Animals.

Some Heart fans like to pretend that 1985's Heart and Bad Animals never happened, but the band's makeover as a keyboard-heavy AOR act gave their career a much needed shot in the arm, as well as some much deserved attention. The band's self-titled album was as good an AOR album as you could hope for, and featured some of the band's biggest hits. Unfortunately Bad Animals does not quite measure up.

The album starts off with three extremely strong tracks - Alone, Who Will You Run To, and There's The Girl - but loses steam shortly after. The first two songs were fairly big hits, and the third, which featured Nancy Wilson on vocals, could have been. Other than those songs, the rest of Bad Animals seems like "by the numbers" AOR songs that would have been better off on a Starship album.

Still, the first three songs are well worth the price of admission. If the rest of the album sounded like them, I'd probably be giving it a 4 or 5-star rating. As it stands, the best I can give is 3 stars.

An excellent Heart album (IMHO the Best)!!.......2006-06-28

This CD is by far my favorite of Heart's. I think it was one of the first CD's I ever bought. I remember listening to 'Alone' and marvelling at the complete lack of hiss in the totally DDD recording.

But the songs hold up too, as I soon discovered. 'Who Will You Run To' is great, but one of my personal faves is 'Wait for an Answer'. I love how the song builds in fervor and intensity. Of course, any song Nancy is lead vocalist on ('There's the Girl' and 'Strangers of the Heart') goes right up there. Nancy has a beautiful voice.

'Alone' is a cool tune as well as 'Bad Animals'. Great stuff. This CD harkens from, what amounts to the Best 6 years of popular music, 1985-1990. This era includes U2 - The Joshua Tree; Peter Gabriel - So; Genesis - No Jacket Required; Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining, as well as others I think are slipping my mind right now. That's quality company. It's an awesome follow up to 1985's self-titled album. Sadly, I didn't find the follow-up, 1990's 'Brigade' to be as good, perhaps since this was such an excellent album. Still, if you want to get a great taste of Heart, this is an excellent start.

Heart is an excellent band and they also do some excellent renditions of Led Zeppelin tunes, like 'Rock and Roll' and a personal favorite 'Battle of Evermore'

My Favorite Heart Lp!!.......2006-03-14

I wore out my vinyl copy of this record!! in 1987 Heart followed up their mega-hit self-titled lp with the strong 'Bad Animals'!! Great songs!! 'Who Will You Run To' written by Diane Warren touched me so deeply!! 'Alone' shows why Ann has one the most powerful voices in music!! 'There's The Girl' with Nancy on vocals is one of my favorites!!! I love the sound of this record very strong and crisp. Now i wish Heart would another record like this!!

HEART'S 2ND BEST!.......2005-11-15

If there is a song that represents the music of my life it would be "Who Will You Run To"(WWYRT) from Heart's Bad Animals recording.

This was the second best recording I bought in the 1980s(Heart 1985 being the first) and within the top 5 of the best recordings I have ever bought. The high-powered, shotgun-blast effect of WWYRT was Heart's apex in making high-powered rock & glam.

Ann Wilson was at her best musically and professionally with Bad Animals.
At her 1987 stage show she carried herself as someone who had accomplished great things and she sounded the best ever, but she didn't break down into frenzied dances like she did at the 1985 show. In my view, she didn't do the dances at the 1987 show because she already proved what an incredible stage performer she was. Just as in her WWYRT video, she performed and sang mega-cool.

Just as a 1960's young adult might have been impressed by the Beatles and thought of a "Hard Day's Night" as being the song that represented all that was great during the 1960s, "Who Will You Run To" represented the best of the 1980s to me. Being a younger adult at the time, WWYRT also represented a high-powered, energized, exuberant & happy state of mind and style of carrying oneself.

WWYRT sounded so great it made me feel cool that the song I loved was also a big radio hit. To me it also represented an accomplished & mega-cool way of projecting oneself.

That powerful feeling & energized way of carrying myself is gone, but the greatness of hearing Ann Wilson singing "Who Will You Run To" is still there. It's timeless.

The song "Bad Animals" shows off Ann Wilson's high-volume, exquisite voice, but the song is too slow-paced instead of being a fast-paced rocker like it should have been.

All the songs are good on this recording. When I initially bought Bad Animals the day the record store put it out for sale, I thought it was a little soft except for WWYRT, but nonetheless enjoyed all of it. "RSVP" is the best soft song. Now in 2005 I think some soft songs should have been replaced by WWYRT-styled songs.

Without a doubt the WWYRT video is the best music video EVER. Ann Wilson has that captivating, mesmerizing, high-powered, confident, yet mega-cool style & look in the video. She has captured my attention & held it for 1/5 of a century now. WWYRT was out 18 years ago, yet the song and video are still unmatched in their greatness. Ann Wilson is rock music's crowned queen and Bad Animals is one of her many jewels. High-powered rock & glam shows made her music royalty to be cherished forever.

Heart ruled female rock in 1987 yet they didn't get the media mention they deserved for their music & stage shows. Instead the media focused on untalented women churning out dance & pop-soul music.

This cd needs to be redone with bonus tracks added such as the rock version of WWYRT.

Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28

These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.

For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.

Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.

Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.

Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04

Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.

Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30

I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.

Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Mile Markers is just what the name says: a set of signs posted to guide the way home. . . or maybe point out the direction that has home in the rear view mirror.

Set in the West, it rambles and wanders and aims the steering wheel out at the endless horizon. A halfways unfolded road map, it passes through Austin and Tucson and San Ysidro and Los Angeles, through the badlands of both South Dakota and New Mexico, from Oklahoma and the windy Panhandle country around Abilene all the way to Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley.

But Mile Markers is a spiritual voyage as much as a mere travelogue, a set of tales that turns into a single song of journeying forth.

It's like a Western, in a way. It's "The Searchers," or "Ride the High Country," or" High Plains Drifter." Or even"Two-Lane Blacktop" or "The Getaway," because it's set in a contemporary West divided by white lines and asphalt, and settled by truckstops and parking lots. It's a landscape of big skies and long roads and endless Mile Markers flying by at the edge of your vision. And like every true Western ever, contemporary or not, it's a story of drifting and settling, of setting down roots and then having them torn up again, of learning that you don't dare settle down when you're just going to be forced to hit the road again.

For Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons, the last ten years has been a blur of miles and markers. BSOJC has played more shows most years than most bands do in their entire careers, and they've done it the hard way, piling their own gear into their own van, and then heading off into a dark night that's just a couple of hours away from day. A lot of indie bands have done a lot of this, but not many have made the long haul across an entire decade. And amidst that grueling schedule, Stewart has managed to keep writing, delivering two previous records, Walk Alone and Distance Between, that built a hardcore fanbase for the band and yet achieved a critical recognition that most singer-songwriters would slit their left wrist to gain. It was an enviable position, as long as you didn't have to do all the work that went with it.

REAL Country Music for a Change.......2006-03-19

Listening to the Bastard Sons' music makes you want to grab a ice-cold longneck and Belly up to the nearest bar. Mile Markers is some of the band's best stuff and in my opinion "Road to Bakersfield" may be one of their best ever which is saying alot. If you're tired of the cookie-cutter type music played on "country" stations, give The Bastards a listen! I'll see ya at the bar.

"King of the World" is a clever observation of the trials of maintaining a relationship while living on the road and "California Sky" is a touching tribute to the band's home state. I SMELL GASOLINE!!!.......2005-09-23

So are you tired, like me, of the overly produced, slick as a linoleum slate of endless pseudo country music dribble? Do you have a hard time telling one band or singer from another. Drones of clones... it just goes on and on. I threw out my radio a long time ago, my friends. They won't play these Bastards! And that is the shame of the state of the country music business today. Luckily, the "ALT - COUNTRY" music scene is saving the day, and these guys are at the top of my list for grit, power, emotion and steam. They are the musical equivalent of an 18 wheeled highway locomotive, the kind that leaves your windshield smoke stained with gasoline fumes as you follow them down that lost desert highway. You've got Johnny Cash playing at full volume. You could pass on by, but no, you're hooked on the diesel fumes, so you ride in their wake, cause they know where they're going and you want to get there too.
I love these guys. I've been following them since the late 90s, almost from the start, hitting every show they've done here in Phoenix. After the shows, I would talk to Mark Stuart and the band, listening to all their war stories about the road, the honky tonks, and the near collisions with both drivers and fame. Like the time they recorded in Johnny Cash's famed cabin, and the feeling he left behind there. They have his blessings and they'll need it, because you ain't gonna find a country DJ with the balls to say "Bastard Sons" on the air.
I truly didn't think they could top the eerie, mystical sounds of their last album, Distance Between (a masterpiece in sonic layers of emotion), but they did it here, with Mile Markers. All the tales I heard them tell of their woes on the road are celebrated in this masterful song cycle of true Americana. It's Route 66 in your ears! You can just smell the burning rubber and gasoline. Each song is like a much needed rest stop along the endless freeway, when you step out onto the pavement of a brightly lit truckstop and feel the breeze of our great nation blowing through your hair. My favorite is UNDER YOUR SPELL. You know what I'm talking about guys, that sultry waitress at the Diner, where you can't stand the food, but you keep coming back for another whiff of her seductive perfume.
KING OF THE WORLD and RADIO GIRL are gems that we should be hearing on the radio, politically incorrect band name or not. I want to hear this stuff blairing out somebody's car radio for a change, instead of that damned rap crap! YEAH!!! I want to hear it playing on the Juke Boxes clean across this here country. This is music that defines our country's heritage!
Mark Stuart is a prolific songwriter, with nearly as many unreleased songs in the vault as Neil Young himself. As a matter of fact him and old Neil are the only two guys left who can really write a good song any more.
So what's fifteen bucks for a trip down route 66, at today's gas prices, it's a bargain!!
Now go to your windows, stick your heads out and shout
"I SMELL GASOLINE!!!!!!!"

A beguiling album.......2004-10-31

Someone had a brilliant notion in getting Leroy Anderson to write a show. (It wasn't the first time; he was hired for "Wonderful Town" but was ditched in favor of Leonard Bernstein.) That it didn't quite work may owe to the fact that he was largely written out, the best of his imperishable vest-pocket tone poems long in the past. Still, this is an utterly captivating score, superbly interpreted. If you want a complete idea how it sounds you might want to get MCA's budget two-disc anthology of Anderson conducting his own music, including several of the show's dance numbers; they almost make you forget how great Arthur Fiedler was with this master of the pops.

Broadway FLOP yields a HIT original cast album.......2004-02-13

This is another splendid original cast recording from Goddard Lieberson and Columbia records. Great score by Leroy Anderson by a fine cast headed by Elaine Stritch who is in great voice here. Don Ameche is her nemesis/love interest and Pat Stanley nearly steals the show with her first act number "The Pussy Foot."

The record is short (45 minutes) and does not include the dance pice "The Town House Maxixe" which can be heard on MCA's Leroy Anderson collection. What is on the CD is quite delightful and Sony has done a first rate job coaxing excellent sound from the early stereo tapes. The booklet gives a good essay on the history of the trobled show and a detailed plot summary.

a classic cult musical.......2002-10-19

GOLDILOCKS is one of my all-time favorite 'lost musicals'. It struggled through three months and 161 performances on Broadway, only to close after scathing reviews and dwindling audiences.

GOLDILOCKS was written by theater critic Walter Kerr as a love-letter to the silent movies that had captivated him as a child. The story concerns sardonic silent-actress Maggie Harris (Elaine Stritch) who has a stormy love-hate relationship with her cocky director (Don Ameche). Complications arise in the form of beautiful Lois Lee (Pat Stanley), who sets out to steal him for herself. Maggie decides to make one more picture under the assumed name of Goldilocks, and makes one last grab at romance...

The reason why the show failed so miserably was the weakness of the book, which was magnified a thousand times over by the greatness of the score; which features "Lazy Moon", "Lady in Waiting", "The Pussy Foot", "Where is the Beast in You?", and my personal favorite "I Never Know When to Say When".

Through its lovely cast album, the musical has a devout cult following and no wonder. Elaine Stritch in her first Broadway leading-role (after years of supporting work in revivals of PAL JOEY and ON YOUR TOES) and the sparkling score of Leroy Anderson is fantastic stuff. Highly recommended.

Straight from Broadway's Golden Age: It's Goldilocks!.......2001-06-29

I first discovered Goldilocks through the double draw of Leroy Anderson and Elaine Stritch. Elaine Stritch I already knew as Joanne in Company singing "The Ladies Who Lunch", and Leroy Anderson was one of my favorite composers, known for such light programmatic and novelty orchestral pieces as The Syncopated Clock, Belle of the Ball, Bugler's Holiday, The Typewriter and Plink, Plank, Plunk. That combo of names caught my eye as I was flipping through the record bins one day, and as I scanned the album cover I saw the names Don Ameche, Nathaniel Frey and Margaret Hamilton which absolutely clinched the deal. I left the store with the record and went straight home to play it. From the moment I dropped the needle (yes, I've had it that long) I was captivated, and it has since become one of my perennial favorites.

The score is top notch, particularly in the material for Stritch and the perfectly cast Don Ameche. It does sag a bit in the material for the secondary couple, but I think that's because it's the primary couple who are the comedians while the secondary couple gets stuck with the sappy side of romance. Yes, there are book problems. Walter Kerr later admitted that they kept beefing up the comedy at the expense of the love story, and reading through the book (which through an incredible stroke of good fortune I found at a local Half Price Books) that's a fair criticism. But this weakness doesn't overwhelm the show and make it unworkable. I have to agree with the assessment that with The Music Man already running featuring a slightly more lovable con artist and a sweet rather than brassy leading lady, Goldilocks wasn't able to measure up to the competition. Taken on its own terms though, Goldilocks works wonderfully.

To mention particular favorites of mine in the score, I have to start with Stritch's Act 2 torch song, "I Never Know When To Say When". Why didn't this become a standard? It stacks up with the best Broadway has to offer. You can hear the pain in Stritch's voice as she laments the mess she's made of her relationhips. "Give the Little Lady" near the top of Act 1 doesn't really cover much in the realm of plot, but it's just so much fun, and "The Beast In You" never fails to get me laughing. All of these feature Stritch alone or with the chorus, but her duet with Ameche, "No One'll Ever Love You", is just as good, and Ameche's solo number, "I Can't Be In Love", in which he discovers to his astonishment that he is indeed in love, is priceless. Then on top of that is "Bad Companions" for Don Ameche's shady sidekicks Nathaniel Frey (an excellent comic character actor who appeared in many better known shows such as Damn Yankees and She Loves Me) and Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West sings!) which is a hoot from start to finish. These are the standouts in my book, but the whole score is eminently listenable, pleasant and tuneful. Of course with Leroy Anderson writing the music it couldn't be anything else.

I sometimes wish I had been born 30-40 years earlier so I could have actually seen what I am only able to get the barest hint of from reading the libretto and listening to the cast album. I strongly recommend to anyone who has had enough interest to wind up here reading these reviews to make this show a permanent part of your collection. More people need to know this show!

Worth your investment - A real delight!.......2001-01-14

Having learned about the life of Leroy Anderson through the recent PBS story on his career,I was very interested to hear this famous composer's only Broadway show.

This original cast recording is a gem. The majority of the songs are first rate, the perfomers are all first rate and the recording quality sounds as fine as anything on the market today. What a shame that the show had such serious problems, such as a weak book and opening with such hits as West Side Story and Music Man already running on Broadway.

If you enjoy Broadway musicals and don't know this show, buy this recording. You will not be disappointed!

Just amazing.......2001-08-08

This album I got at Disneyland Paris. I saw it and just knew that I had to have it. It's classic disney tunes in the style of the great composers. And it really do remind of them. As a lover of classic music and disney music, this couldn't be a better album.

This cd is a great introduction for little ones into the world of classical music. My children ages 6 and 4 have "worn out" their first copy of this lively cd. If you enjoy disney music, this is a must for your children's music library.
