Grunge angst got old. We wanted to have fun. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was there, ready with serviceable, pumped-up swing. Their music is straight, uptempo, dance floor jazz. There's nothing particularly original going on, but the sleazy horns and snappy arrangements get the job done. There's nothing campy or tongue-in-cheek either; the music just barrels ahead...like good rock & roll. --Steve Tignor

i love big bad voodoo daddy!.......2007-07-08
this has to be my favorite bbvd cd. great to blast in the car for any ride and to dance to.
Great Stuff.......2007-02-03
We used to see these guys play on the Nashville club circuit in the late 1990s, and bought the CD at that time. the energy of their live performances comes through on this New Orleans-style jazz compilation. From the back beat to the great rhythms, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will have you snapping your fingers, tapping your toes, and wishing you had more of their stuff. I highly recommend it.
Where did these guys come from?!.......2006-03-01
Wow! If you would like a change in pace from hiphop or rock and want to be transported back in time, check out these guys! This group creates a wonderful mix of New Orleans jazz, swing, and modern story lyrics. I only wish we could have some clubs open up in our downtowns with this sound. This group will make you move and you'll be "swinging" before you notice what's happening.
Wonderful.......2006-02-26
With bands like "Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy" they just don't get better than this. If you want to get in a good mood, lose weight, (I did. I lost 25 pounds with this band)or just feel good, this is the music to buy!!!
Couldn't be more satisfied.......2005-08-02
I went to the concert and enjoyed the music sooo much that I decided to buy the CD. My family and I absolutely love it. All of the music is so upbeat it just makes you want to dance.

good music.......2007-05-25
if you like early 80's and punk, you'll like this album. wall of voodoo is a great band often overlooked.
Way out West and ahead of their time.......2007-03-24
This IS it !!!!! If you are an European (like myself), and want to know what America is all about, (both above and below the surface), you get it here - served with a blink in the eye, a smile, alot of fun, and some frustrations. It is all their - blended nicely together.
Wall of Voodoo is phenomenal in American music. Not many other US artists can create such an precise look and perspective on their homeland and the western culture in general. And always served with a surplus of humour !!
The song "Call of the West" is perhaps the finest rock/pop song ever crafted. Big words, but it is hard to beat.
Overall, the lyrics (actually more accurate: full-blown stories) are second to none and the music was perhaps 20 years ahead of its time - mixing rhytm-machines, keyboards, electric guitars in a great mix !
Get it. I will make your life a little richer (which is actually alot)
and a whole lot cooler !!
The Call Of Excellence.......2007-03-07
This is the album that got noticed because of the hit
single "Mexican Radio". So this was there best selling
album & the last with Stan Ridgeway as lead vocalist. I
wish they would have added bonus tracks to this already
excellent album (maybe the 12" dub mix of "Mexican
Radio" Ummm). A excellent record & a band that stood
apart from all others in the 1980's. I highly recommend
you to get this album. After that, buy the two previous
recordings by the band, "The Index Masters" & the highly
collectable rare & expensive "Dark Continent". What are
ya waiting for anyway! Get um! Search "Judemac Forever"
on msn.
Good... but not buyable.......2006-05-10
I had the "45" if anyone even still knows what that is, a single of "Mexican Radio" back in the 80's and after hearing it on the radio the other day, I looked here and saw where you could listen to all the others songs if only for a moment. All I can is- WOW! How did this band crank out suck a kick @ss song compared to the rest of other music on the alblum?! I mean my god their bad. I suppose they grow on you if you forced yourself to listen to it enough times, and Im sure others will disagree harkening back to a better time, better music argument. Sorry, the rest of the track suckx. WOV must have just been another One-Hit-Wonder (despite 9 alblums??!!).
Brilliant.......2006-03-22
This album is as innovative as any ever produced. It is however the antithsis of pop music so pop fans beware. If you want something that is totally out of the box, but never gets old, this it! One of the best rock albums ever!

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Like Robin Hood working on a tip from Chuck D, D'Angelo has stolen back the soul that was missing from the just-add-water R&B scene. Voodoo is a simmering cauldron of sound, a magical collection. Stained with sweat, longing, and rage, this is an album with trouble on the brain. But it also includes sacred sweet nothings and rapturous raw rhythms to get you through the night. --Lizz Mendez Berry
Amazon.com
Halfway through the languid midtempo ballad "Send It On" from D'Angelo's new sophomore effort, Voodoo, the young retro-soul maestro and band shift tempo and melody. It's a move so understatedly dramatic that it elicits comparisons not just to obvious touchstones Marvin Gaye and Al Green, but to the Jimi Hendrix of Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. While Voodoo is hardly in a league with such major statements, it's a record inviting enough to attract repeated plays of its 78-minute length. As on his 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, D'Angelo covers a wide range of concerns--sex, home cooking, the destructive side of current street life--in a deceptively offhand manner. But he's a crafty craftsman: even a throwaway workout like "Chicken Grease" is blessed not only with a slinky groove and a guitar lick that deserves to be called just that, but bursts of Gaye-style vocal harmonies; the whole track, for all its retro flavor, ends up sounding like nothing else around. Throw in the blasts of anger that fire "Devil's Pie," the restatement of Bono's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" in "Greatdayindamornin'," and the complete takeover of Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Makin' Love," and Voodoo proves one jam that was well worth the nearly five-year wait. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Monotone .......2007-08-04
This CD is by no means horrible but it's by no means great either. Though I do love the song Devil's Pie, I must say that this album failed to hold my interest. Outside of that track, his lyrics are almost impossible to make out and the songs all begin to sound the same. The melody's are your typical neo-soul sharp notes and the beats are really predictable. Normally, I LOVE slow songs but they have to have an intersting/pretty melody to them.
I suggest you listen to the samples before purchasing. I hope this album grows on me.
D'Angelo-Voodoo.......2007-06-07
Timeless! That is the perfect way to describe this album is timeless. It never gets old. Voodoo is one of those albums that you can listen to it over and over and you will hear something you did not here the first time. For the most part he stays on the same type of style Brown Sugar had, just a little more modern to fit with the time. And speeking of time he made his fans wait long enough for this masterpiece coming just shy of five years in between Voodoo and his debut. And now he is going on eight years for his follow up to Voodoo and there is still very little mateiral coming to light for the set entitled James River which is suppose to be due out in late 07 early 08. The anticipation is killing me as well as thousands of other i am sure. But with Voodoo being the masterpiece it is, i will say it just pushes Brown Sugar out of the way as far as which one is better. I mean you still have that mellow laid back style, but with a few more "Groove" tracks. Like the mid tempo banger "Left & Right" which is one of the many highlight on this album. Another being the super soulful "The Line" which is possibly the best song only behind "The Root". The great thing about "The Root" is the guitar in the background just sounds so mellow, and his vocals are so quiet that you would swear he was whispering. Beware though, dont listen to this album in the dark, because this album has smokiness to it that is almost eeiry in a good way, but it can play tricks on you if listen in the dark. But he still is unmatched for his vocals, and yet again if you are thinking about buying this, keep in mind D is far from the poppy radio R&B, because you wont get any of that here. But this is definetly one of the best albums of all time, and i cant wait for James River, definetly buy Voodoo.

excellent.......2007-05-05
i don't listen to a lot of r&b. i really have no idea who are the hot or popular artists singing r&b currently and i don't care that much. that being said, this cd is my favorite of all time. i bought it the first day it came out in 2000 and haven't stopped listening to it since then. it's that good.
it's definitely r&b but has a deeper affinity with soul. there are also jazz and blues elements. and this may sound trite but it is far different than anything else out there. there are a few other neosoul artists that i like -- erykah badu and raphael saadiq in particular -- but none of them are nearly as talented or innovative as d'angelo.
this cd is a lot different than brown sugar with its smooth and jazzy polish. voodoo is funky and raw. this cd showcases some of the most innovative black musicians out there today -- roy hargrove provides horns on several tracks with ?uestlove on the drumset. and all that talent gelled really well.
it's been over 7 years since voodoo came out and i really hope that d'angelo can get himself together enough to put out another album.
Four Years After the Fact, I Finally Get It!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-03
I hate to admit it but when "Voodoo" was first released, I was straight up pissed. I thought it was ok, but it wasn't want I wanted to hear. I think many of us have that problem. (If it's not what WE want it to sound like, then it's not good, or they're slippin'.)
But let's be real. (This goes out to the negative reviewers.) I have to be honest, I was looking for another "Brown Sugar Volume 2", PERIOD. That was my mistake. So I put it away for about four years. I was talking to one of my boys about that project and how I thought it was just okay. He told me to pull it back out. DAMN!!!!!! This project is so hot.......... Now I appreciate this music for what it is. (Innovative, original, funky, soulful and creative.)
But what's really stupid is that if he stuck to the same formula that was successful, these same folk that are complaining now would criticize him for repeating himself and not doing anything new. Isn't this why we listen to artist like D'angelo, Badu and Jill Scott, because they're different? So I got to apologize to D for not gettin' it at first.
I dare anyone to pull this cd back out. It's hotter than anything out there right now.
smooth sounds.......2007-03-14
he started this whole"neo-soul"thing that alicia keys is getting paid off
of.anybody into john legend should pick up this and his first album "brown sugar".the only negative is his enunciation while singing.without the insert of the cd,you would never understand what the hell he is saying!it's actually more 3 1/2 stars than 4 but way better than any of this psuedo rb garbage that is out presently.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Great type of Jazz........2006-08-17
Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.
A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26
This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.
Fun, soulful, carefree...like the spirit of New Orleans.......2006-07-04
I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!
I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.
Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.
Highly recommended!
This is the Best!.......2005-01-20
I own three of BBVD's CDs and this one is the best. You just have to move those feet! I just love these guys.
Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14
I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!

Go Daddy Go!.......2007-01-24
I first saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in the movie, The Swingers, some years ago, and was curious to hear more as Swing dancing is as big as ever these days. Big Daddy pretty much sticks to the grooves, a kind of "dancabilly" that is even more infectious in this live album than on previous studio albums. For swing dancers, this is a modern take on the classic rhythms of the 40s with some pretty jazzy improvisations. Big Daddy can play and they have a lot of fun with the music, showing a tremendous amount of versatility as well as humor on these recordings. The added DVD doubles the pleasure.
voodoo magic.......2007-01-17
Wonderful music! Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a class act, whose energy and love of music is apparent not only in the sound, but in the enclosed video of one of their concerts. Their sound is catchy and original, while also being reminiscent of a bygone era.
Best of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.......2006-08-18
I love this album!!!!! Listening to this album makes you feel like you are right there at the show. The musical arrangements are great, that big band swing sound is present and the sense of humor of the bandmates is evident. You don't see any better than this is music today.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy = BIG FUN.......2006-06-25
The first word that comes to mind when I think of BBVD is FUN.
I first heard this band on the radio. I was hooked immediately...and so were my wife and children. I bought two of their CDs from Amazon.com: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Save My Soul. And we've been listening to --and singing along with-- them ever since.
My toddlers tend to sing BBVD songs in public...without inhibition! It's only slightly embarrasing to stroll the grocery store with three kids screaming out the lyrics to Go Daddy-O. But I really can't blame them. The music is contagious!
Just last week, my wife and I caught BBVD live at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible performance that kept the crowd smiling. We had so much FUN! BBVD = FUN! There is no other way to say it.
I admit that I was hesitant to purchase this CD / DVD at first, since I already owned most of the songs. But, after seeing them live, I bought this CD the very next day...and we love it.
There is just something about a live performance, even when you're listening to a recorded "live" performance. On stage, BBVD generates some serious energy, and you can't help but be pulled right into it.
The sound quality on both the CD and the bonus DVD is excellent, and the video on the DVD is crystal clear. As a matter of fact, the DVD provides a better view of the band than the one I had "live" at the House of Blues. The music content on both the CD and DVD is the same, though the DVD has extra features like a short film on the band's beginnings. For a two-disc set, the price can't be beat.
If you are into swing, or just need a good dose of happy music, treat yourself to this Live performance of the Kings of Swing. Their fun music can't be beat!
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ROCKS!!.......2006-02-24
If you like swing or big band music, you will like this CD. The music is upbeat and makes you want to dance. The bonus DVD of their concert is fabulous. If you are looking for one swing/big band music CD/DVD, you can't go wrong with this one.

Warren Haynes other band.......2007-07-04
This is an excellent introduction to Govt Mule, if you have not heard of them before, and are looking for some quality guitar rock music. Warren Haynes leads this band, as well as stepping in for Dickie Betts in the Allman Brothers. This is not music in the same southern rock genre as the Allman Brothers, it is blues based rock.
Warren is stellar on slide guitar, the guitar work is framed within excellent song craftsmanship as well. Some of the songs run long, but this is not a jam band.

About to Rage is a slowburner, Slackjaw Jezebel uptempo funk rocker, as is Lola leave your light on.
This just gets better and better..........2007-01-27
Man, the more I listen to it, the more I like it! These guys can definitely rock, and their ballads are not just filler (check out "Wine and Blood" and it's sweet, cryin' guitar hooks and clever opening line..."Desiree's in disarray...") They tell stories.
This is blues-based rock with intelligent and original lyrics and unexpected and sophisticated chord changes ("Little Toy Brain.".)
Even...dare I say..a "Zepelin-esque" riff or two. Modern, yet with a big nod to late 60's/early 70's stuff; if a woman were to sing in this band, you could easily picture Janis Joplin or Dale Kranz (of Rossington Collins...damn, she rocked!) belting these out. Guitarist Warren Haynes, I believe, is the singer. And let me just say, he's no slouch in the vocal department. In fact, he's spot-on.
I've seen this tagged as "party rock" and "swamp rock." Huh? Nope. Just damn good music. You'll probably find yourself listening to this alot.
Guess I'm just not a fan.......2006-08-15
I heard great things about them but I guess I wasn't really familiar with their work - either that or this particular album just isn't for me. Then again I'm not a blues fan so maybe that's the problem. The first tune is catchy but the rest is not funked up enough for my taste.
Great Southern Jams.......2006-03-08
This is a 5 star effort all the way! What a great and fun band these Gov't Mule guys have turned out to be. Along with the always awesome rhythm section and perfect guitar we also get some great keyboards courtesy of Danny Louis.
These guys consistently create fantastic music.
hot hot hot.......2005-10-19
Warren Haynes and Matt Abts return with new players Danny Lewis and Andy Hess on keyboard and bass respectively for a rebirth of one of the most intense bands working. While I prefered the stylistic breadth of the Deep End projects, this is in my opinion the best Mule CD as a self contained unit. While the instinctive communication between Haynes and the late Alan Woody is missing, overall the band burns with a purpose.
Standouts include Bad Man Walking, Slackjaw Jezebel, Wine and Blood, Lola Leave Your Light On, Little Toy Brain, and New World Blues

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's Scotty Morris is a sincere, talented, knowledgeable music lover who unfortunately can't translate his passion into truly effective sounds. Wide-ranging hipster credentials in hand--BBVD got its name from late blues guitarist Albert Collins--the seven-piece outfit's sound is totally competent and no more. Pushing forward deliberately, but with little sense of the swing that's their supposed trademark, the bland-voiced Morris and band remain lukewarm through This Beautiful Life's dozen cuts. Paying tribute to Sinatra with a closing "Ol' MacDonald" is a nice touch, but not as nice as the real thing is. (Hint: It's on Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!!) --Rickey Wright

Swing music to dance to.......2007-01-03
I especially like the last song of this CD. All the other songs have a typical swing dance beat to it.
More great Jazz.......2006-08-17
This was the second CD that I bought after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and even though it perhaps is not my type of music, I thought it was great to listen to. It really rocks and it has to move you. I really enjoy music that has a beat to it. I think it opened up a new type of music for me. Great stuff.
It doesn't get any better than this.......2005-03-30
This is definitely one of the best swing cds I've ever listened to. The music has a lot of variety, from the very brassy and bright to the softer and more subtle.
This cd leaves their first cd in the dust. A definite must for anyone interested in Swing.
Kings of Swing!.......2005-03-29
If you're a "Swingster" this is one CD you must have in your collection. This is hot, hot, hot! You can't just sit and listen to this one . . . it is so contagious that you'll come down with a major case of the jitterbug and you'll be swingin' all over the room before you can say "Cab Calloway!" The only thing better is seeing these guys in person! Top Drawer for Sure!!!
good cd, more evolved sound.......2004-10-22
the title says it all. the cd is about life, the ups and downs, and everything inbetween. It is a good cd, but doesnt have quite as many super stong songs as Americana Deluxe. You have to be in the mood to listen to this cd, but all the songs are still good, just not something i pop in the cd player just for background music. still recomended tho

Though they found their fortunes intertwined in a punk/new wave/MTV marketing sensibility that typically confused style with substance, L.A.'s Wall of Voodoo was musically rooted in a distinctly different, often more compelling late '70s art rock ethos. Anchored by the stark, angular rhythms of the late Marc Moreland's guitar and singer/chief songwriter Stan Ridgway's sly sideshow barker vocal antics, this re-release of the band's debut 1980 EP (supplemented with raw, exemplary live tracks recorded at UC Riverside in '79) now seems more prophetic industrial music template than quirky new wave tract. If legend says their ominous, synth-drone take on Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" may have originally been intended elsewhere (WOV began as low-budget soundtrack collective), tracks like "Longarm" and "Can't Make Love" crackle with anxious energy and wit; small wonder Ridgway occasionally revisits them with success in his contemporary incarnation as acoustic singer/songwriter. The live tracks further showcase the band's cinematic bent via a medley of Morricone's main title for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Frontiere's Hang 'Em High theme, as well as offering up early versions of songs from Dark Continent and their 1982 classic, Call of the West. --Jerry McCulley

The Index Masters-Wall Of Voodoo.......2007-05-29
Stan Ridgway at his best!!! Puts a entire new sound to the classic Johnny Cash Ring of fire (Or old sound being the CD from Wall Of Voodoo is 27 years old)!
EP Into An Album.......2007-03-07
A welcome sight, the original EP with added bonus tracks that some ended up as "B" sides on 12" singles. You just can't beat "Ring Of Fire" & "Can't Make Love". So buy this one & if you like this album, you'll want to get their first album "Dark Continent" which is a expensive one right now but worth the money & "Call Of The West". As long as Stan Ridgeway was the lead vocalist, this band was great.
New Wave will never die!.......2007-01-12
Wall is great on this album. No negative things to say about this one. Its a great Wall of Voodoo venue without Mexican Radio. Shh..man Ring of Fire is one of the best I've heard!
Finally!.......2005-12-30
I had Wall of Voodoo's first LP when it came out and a couple of year's ago thought I would see if I could find it on CD. No such luck! The " Index Masters ", which contains several of the songs from that album was out of print. I found it on ebay several times, usually going for around $70.00 or so by the time the auction was concluded! Finally it is available for a reasonable price. This album is a gem, I recommend it to anyone who loves 80's or Punk or New Wave Music. As a previous reviewer stated, Wall of Voodoo was really ahead of the times!
Wall of Voodoo was way ahead of their time.......2005-10-26
The Good
Not having heard of Wall of Voodoo before, and having been four years old when this album originally came out, I instantly made comparisons to Devo and the B52's once I heard the opening tones and bombastic vocal delivery on "Long Arm". The guitar tones are stunning as each ring out with a biting twang. I think I even hear a slide whistle in there. The keyboard tones of "Passenger" are reminiscent of the Knight Rider theme mixed with any creepy horror movie theme.
It doesn't get any more experimental sounding than "Can't Make Love". Vocalist Stan Ridgeway sounds as though he's on the brink of madness. The Johnny Cash cover "Ring of Fire" shows how ahead of their time Wall of Voodoo was, because it uses effects and rhythms similar to a lot of hard rock music today. You may smirk the way `fire' is pronounced and everything else that sounds like it; very new wave. The live tracks are twenty five years old, yet you can't tell much of a difference from them and the songs from the EP.
That says a lot for the group because they didn't have the technology that the industry has today to make great live recordings. "End of an Era" has a melancholy sadness to it as it explores growing up. "Animal Day" has a percussive beat that you can dance too and lyrics you can laugh too. "Red Light" shows you that there's nothing that drummer Joe Nanini won't tap on, as you hear everything from symbols to wooden blocks. The disc (and live set) concludes with a fervent rendition of "The Passenger".
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
On The Index Sessions it's evident that Wall of Voodoo was way ahead of their time. Their combination of rock guitars and experimental sounds fell right in line with their peers, as well as establishing them in a league of their own. However, I don't think the music world was really ready for them yet. So what's your reason now?

Hey, Get Some Ears.......2007-06-01
The Rolling Stones need ears. The unissued outtakes and alternate takes of these cuts are all superior, every one (same is true for "Steel Wheels"). Mostly it's a matter of Richards' guitar work being mixed way down in favor of Jagger's vocals. Strange and even fascinating odd sonic experiments are mixed down into mush. Either they work on it so hard they don't hear it any more, or Jagger's ego is the trump card on the take choices. Maybe a few decades from now the best takes will be issued and this will be tossed. An OK album as issued; brilliant if the best takes had been chosen, if not on the level of "Exile". I hate George Martin's stereo mixes of the Beatles (as opposed to their own mono choices) but it's a crime the Stones didn't have a George Martin in the 70s and 80s. Don Was on "Stripped" (an excellent overlooked album) showed what could happen if they did.
In Retrospect, Almost A Return To Form.......2007-01-15
Middled-aged Rock Stars, much less ordinary folk, can never be young men again, no matter how much we and they wish it. Sensibilities change and mature, and one can only express what one's feelings at that moment. For this, "Voodoo Lounge" may ultimately be the Stones equivalent of Dylan's "Time Out Of Mind," a rocking yet rootsy take on aging and the horrors of the modern world.
Take it out of the context of it 1994 release date, when it was obscured by the height of Grunge, it comes off as very listenable indeed.
Mick was quoted at the time as being upset with producer Don Was for trying to make it too much like "Exile," but what could be wrong with aiming at that album's expermentalism and eclecticism?
"Love Is Strong" and "You Got Me Rocking" are two juggernaut singles, the latter having particularly good literary lyrics by Mick. "Sparks Will Fly" is just about up there with them, but it's on the ballads that dominate the album where the band really shines, in a way reminescent of the ballad-heavy "Tattoo You."
"New Faces" is like "Lady Jane" revisited, Mick singing over dulcimers and harpsichords of a young buck, the man he used to identify with well, out to steal his girl, as comforting a song in lean times as "Waiting On A Friend."
"The Worst," beautiful Keith ballad with lovely Irish fiddle and Ronnie's lightest slide work yet.
"Moon Is Up," another lovelorn ballad, with Charlie's haunting echoing drums (recorded in a stairwell) and Ronnie's spidery pedal steel,
heightining the midnight ambience.
"Out Of Tears," (don't the Stones do great with songs that start with "Out of..."?) a nice, slightly repetitive ballad, with some of Mick's best singing until the "Alfie" soundtrack (check it out, it's good!)
"Brand New Car" and "Suck On The Jugular" (Despite great horns on the former and hip-hop drumming on the latter) are tired sexual predator
come-ons, and the only letdowns on the record.
"Sweethearts Together," at first treacly saccharine, grows in charm with every listen. A rare return to Mick and Keith harmonies on a Freddy Fenderesque Tejano waltz, with accordians that would charm the ghost of Brian Jones.
"Blinded By Rainbows," about the tunnel-vision of political martyrs and the destruction in their wake, might be Mick's best, most heartfelt song in ten years either direction. Nice choruses.
"Baby Break It Down" cops the lick from Kool & The Gang's "Celebrate"
and makes a nice, gritty groove - 'Does one or the other of us have to be the boss' - great Mick relationship line.
"Thru and Thru." Screw its use on that celebration of psychopaths, "The Sopranos," and just enjoy a slow-building, almost Dire Straits love song from Keith. Lisa Fischer comes through well.
It will never be "Sticky Fingers," but "Voodoo" gets better as we all get closer to the end.
this cd rocks.......2007-01-12
great songs a couple from the movie the replacements
love it
'Back to the Future'.......2006-07-17
'Voodoo Lounge' is a thoroughly worthy Stones' listening adventure. They rediscover their past in a way that benefits from the most modern producing without becoming redundant. 'Voodoo Lounge' is an uneven, yet enjoyable outing, nevertheless.
There is some great power injected in some songs like "You Got Me Rocking" and "Sparks Will Fly," but much of the rest of the album is rhythmic musically or funny lyrically. Some of the songs seem like self-parody. "Moon Is Up" is an intricate remake of "Child of the Moon" with playful phrasing. "New Faces" has Victorian nuances that recall "Lady Jane" with an oddly, Western outlaw hero. And, "Blinded by Rainbows" recalls their sixties era with a "Gimmie Shelter" theme given a different approach and a sparser musical backdrop. This song is certainly worthy as is the jazzy and entertaining "Brand New Car" and the playful fun of "Suck on the Jugular". Other worthy moderate tempo songs are here, including Richard's "The Worst". They even have some fine slow songs. "Out of Tears" has to rank with "Angie," "As Tears Go By" and "I'm Just Waiting on a Friend" as one of their best slow songs. Certainly, Jagger's humility in the words is striking. "Sweethearts Together" is aruably another fine song, but one of personal taste. It seems like such a diversion to have an almost sweet love serenade, complete with an accordion accompaniment from the Rolling Stones. Subjectively, one of the best songs is "Mean Disposition," the finale. They dig up their rhythm and blues with finesse here and do so with lyrics that live up to their past. However, there are less worthwhile tracks included, too. Near the end "Baby Break It Down" seems long-winded, and Richard's "Thru and Thru" is almost monotonous.
At least this is one of the most generous selections The Stones have given us. With sixteen songs, many of them clocking past 4:00 minutes, there is much to enjoy. 'Voodoo Lounge' isn't their best act, and the show is too long, but it is entertaining overall.
Nearly Unlistenable in 2006.......2006-06-29
For a long time, I thought this was one of the best Stones releases. However, after spending quality time with "Bridges" and "Bang," I now see that this now-dated album does not even come close to competing with any albums that the band has ever released. This was hailed as a "return to form," but when was the last time you actually listened to any of these songs:
"Moon Is Up", "Sweethearts Together," "New Faces," "Blinded by Rainbows," "Suck on the Jugular," "The Worst," "Baby, Break it Down," "Mean Disposition," "Brand New Car," "Thru and Thru?"
When was the last time the Stones themselves played any of these onstage?
Really, only the first 3 songs, "Out of Tears," and "I Go Wild" are of interest to the compilers of today. If you're really dying for "Suck on the Jugular," go out and get either "Bang"'s version of it ("Look What the Cat Dragged In") or "Bridges'" version ("Juiced"). Very disappointing, 13 years later.
