Still Making History.......2007-08-02
WOW!!! What a great album! Not only a superb singer and songwriting but an immense natural beauty... not to mention her virtuosic guitar skills. Ana Popovic is a singular talent and this, her US debut, is her finest work to date. She tackles issues such as politics, perserverance and more on this extremely eclectic album. One of the best surprises of this year, I would recommend this album to just about anyone. Ana Popovic's Still Making History is one of the finest pop/rock releases of the year and it proves Ana's potential for superstardom!!!

90'a RnB reigns supreme!.......2007-01-26
This is one of the MANY amazing RnB albums that came out during the 1990's that had that jazzy/hiphop flavah. "Tell Me" is a powerful timeless song that I still bump to this day. "Keep Trying" is incredibly uplifting!
The only thing I don't like is that "Baby Luv" version on the CD is NOT the soulful groovy club version that bumps harder. The CD version is like some kind of throwback version. I don't really care for that one. Other than that this CD is tight.
But download the grooovy 'Just a touch'-sampled "Baby Luv". ;-)
THE BEST...OF THE SOULFUL ALBUMS.......2006-08-31
THIS ALBUM IS WORTH HAVING IN YOUR COLLECTION EVERY JAM WILL HAVE YOU REMEMBERING SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE...
Chill out soft jazz soul fusion.......2006-08-01
Great album to chill to. Nice soulful jazzy tracks. Great to have in the music collection.
It's Rare.......2006-07-08
I have listened to alot of cds in my time, and I have to say that "Groove Theory" is one of those rare times that all the music on the cd sounds fantastic. I have to admit, that I am taken back even more by this cd now that I am older and can appreciate the messages in the music.
If Groove Theory was just an experiment, it was, and still is successful.
Sure could use some of this in the RnB arena now..........2005-11-09
When I was in fifth grade back in 1995, I vividly remember the single "Tell Me", by the duo (Amel Larrieux & Bryce Wilson) Groove Theory being played on the radio. I was happy to discover when I purchased this album last week with my best friend (another music freak) that not only was that track still golden, but that the record itself was satisfying in 2005!
There is a great sense of melody & groove here. Utterly infectious, beat driven, yet not hollow. I wouldn't call the music heavy handed, but it isn't to soft either. Lyrically, the words move from romantic to urban fairy tales; not all of these ending happily, but always with a glimmer of hope. Amel's voice is gentle, yet doesn't get lost in the arrangements. Almost like a chameleon on a wall changing colors rapidly, Amel voice matches the lyrics & musical production (good job Mr. Wilson, where are you now?) of each track.
So, to cap off this extremely short & 'fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants' review, if you like quality RnB, pick this up.

Amazon.com essential recording
George Clinton's post-bicentennial message to those in the "chocolate cities" was that America could be theirs, too, without any loss of their own black, regional identities. One Nation Under a Groove remains Funkadelic's most provocative release, as well as one of the funkiest long-players released in the disco era. The band vamps on a world where people of different color play each other's songs ("Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"), lose their inhibitions (the classic title track), and bond together with the glue of shared secrets (the wonderful "Groovallegiance"). Standout: the slow-grooved "Into You," in which a lover vows to stay true or a patriot pledges devotion to a new flag--take your pick. You might think that a complex and moving ode to commitment is out of place on an album with such political overtones, but it's not. It's really the quiet-storm centerpiece. --Don Harrison --This text refers to an out-of-print edition of this title.
Album Description

Yet Another Funkadelic Best.......2006-09-15
This was too hot to handle if you were not into funk but the ever danceable "One Nation" made you get up. It was a National anthem for "us folks" and gave us some pride in knowing that we are "One Nation Under A Groove" and we had a voice. We had "Lift Every Voice " and now we got "One Nation" what more can you ask for. You have a wonderfully written dance song with the team of george Clinton, Gary Shider and the multi-talented Walter "Junie" Morrisson. "Grooveallegience" is another well done song withe the bass of Rodney "Skeet" Curtis..Another revamp of the funk mob but not noticeable only great music. The are puffing out their chests and saying "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?"--The "Promental............enemasquad" was a hilarious treat and I am glad that they put the instumental on the album as it is a good music track--They just lacked the backing vocal tracks that was on "Promental". "Maggot Brain' the live version was very good Eddie or Mike I don't remember but excellent all of the same. This was the year for the Parliament/Funkadelic as they put a flag on the earth and then went underwater---I said it before, and I'll say it again, what a funk mob!!!
One Nation Under a Groove.......2006-07-20
This is one of the most important albums for this group. Though many are aware of the title track,( One Nation Under a Groove" THE Funk Anthem) much of the rest of the album has been over looked. The strong blues background, mixed with bits of reggage and soul make this not only a funky dance album, but also a great album to relax to. It it not to be missed.
good for your mind... good for the dance floor.......2006-05-23
there's plenty of stuff to groove to on this album. it's an awesome blend of funk, disco, rock, reggae, jazz, and messages about unity. if you can get past the outer space stuff, poo humor, and the "bonus EP", you're in for a real treat. get the album Maggot Brain, too. it'll blow your mind.
So many great records.......2006-05-22
There are some many good funkadelic records I happen to own this on vinyl and is an essential in any record/cd collection. If you are thinking about buying this get it on vinyl instead. If you don't have a record player then invest sucka.
Pledge Allegiance to the Funk!.......2005-12-20
Each and every member of Funkadelic HAD to have been high as a kite to come up with the songs on this album. Aside from that, this album showcases some really great musicians. I enjoy listening to it every time.

To get the full vibe of the New Jack Swing and the strength of Aaron Hall's voice, you gotta have Guy's self titled debut as well as the follow up "The Future".
Essential collection from the kings of New Jack Swing.......2007-01-05
Groove Me: The Very Best of Guy features the best work of the Kings of New Jack Swing, Guy. Teddy, Aaron and Damon were at the top of their game from 1988-1991. New Jack Swing tracks like I Like , Groove Me, My Fanasty I Wanna Get With You and Teddy's Jam are guartneed to get a party started and I can't forget about the slow jams. With the writing of Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall's vocals easily carry the CLASSIC slow jams Piece Of My Love,Let's Chill, Resuce Me and Why You Wanna Keep Me From My Baby. I was surpised that Yearning For Your Love and Goodbye Love were omitted, never the less this is still a great disc.
For the "please help me" reviewer .......2005-08-04
For the person that needed help on the "keep me from my baby" song....try looking up Aaron Halls solo debut cd. It includes two versions of "Don't be afraid" which was a big hitter!

They Forgot 3 Buckets!!!!.......2005-04-09
Of course, who's not happy to see a respected group with the essential of his musicology in a CD? I'm one of them, to listen again to some anthological tracks like "I like", "Do Me Right" or "Dancin" is very nice but unfortunately, how they forget "Goodbye love", "My Business" and "Spend Time"?
Indeed these mistakes, if you got some money to spend, it's better for you to buy this CD after all because we know how good the Hall'S and Riley are!
Enjoy it!

James Brown, In The Jungle Groove.......2007-01-10
CD was received within days after ordering. CD was in good shape.
gangstasoul.......2006-12-25
When the establishment bemoans the advent of gangsta rap and takes the moral (b.s.) highground in trying to say that rebellious music of their time was not so bad, this is a CD you can shove up their noses just to remind them that the joy of music and the despair of oppression has been around since J.B., since gospel, since plantation songs...but J.B. never made it all sound sooo funky.
I am amazed at what James Brown can pull off. This disc has some long jams, with little more than a single riff while James screams intermittently over it, and yet...that's all a great J.B. song needs. And this is some heavy J.B., something with a little edge to it, soul comign up like steam from the sewer, a little angry, but James isn't going to let all that bring the funk down. Just like the spliff he's putting together on the back cover, he's going to roll his own version and make it funky.
Obviously, a classic track on this is "Funky Drummer," a track that has been sampled from PE to LL Cool J to (no lie) Sinead O'Connor, but you'll be grooving to "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" and "Hot Pants."
But don't think you'll just be getting down mindlessly. Well, you may, but J.B. is too smart for that. He's just got too much soul, and it stretches way back and way forward, putting himself square in the river of music man, and this album is genius for that.
It's James Brown's world, we just live in it..........2006-09-26
I bought this on vinyl when it came out in '86 and wore the groove right off it. Good thing CDs last forever. "Funky Drummer" must be the single most sampled song on the planet. Everybody in the world has used it, even Sinead O'Connor! The version of "Give it up or turn it loose" that appears on this is so good, it will make you want to slap your momma down! (In Southern parlance, that's damn good) If you listen to this CD, the "Star Time" box set and one or two of the "Live at The Apollo" CDs, you'll know that God exists, because James Brown was no accident.
Roll over, Beethoven.......2005-08-16
I am warning you right now, because I am right, and what I am about to predict will be true. That is why I'm posting my prediction at this fine archival space, where it can be viewed by all ages of the future.
In about 300 years from now, the people of the future will not have any interest in Elvis, or the Beatles, or Classical music, or anything that ever achieved #1 status on the charts.
In the future, James Brown will be regarded as the greatest musical talent and biggest genious in the history of the world. And this cd will be near the top of his shrine to greatness, along with "Hell", "Sex Machine", and "Funky People".

Do disturb your listening habits -- make room for the System!.......2007-02-17
The System seems to be one of the 80s' best-kept secrets. Although they have a very vocal following, they remain largely unknown to a wider audience. This is truly a shame. But, if you haven't been converted yet, you're actually kind of lucky - you get the joy of discovering these guys for the very first time. If you love 80s music, you're just about guaranteed to go gaga over the System. You can't go wrong with any of their period releases, but there's no doubt that this one is their finest hour. Their sound is a truly unique blend of R&B, pop and disco (call it dance music if that term makes you uncomfortable). It's synth-powered and heavy on melody. Listening to this album is like falling through a cotton-candy filled sky - positive, upbeat and full of possibilities. You'll feel like you're flying and your troubles will fade into the background. I've heard some knock the System with a comment like, "It sounds like the music from any crappy teen comedy from the 80s." Apparently, they think that's a criticism.
Great 80s Pop.......2007-01-26
Great collection of some good 80s synth pop. Must have for a collector of great synth 80s bands
The System.......2007-01-21
Yes Dont Disturb This Groove is an original. It will always sound good. Buy it if you do not have it.
Some Of The Best 80's Music.......2005-05-24
The System has provided the best 80's music I've ever listened to. And 1987's Don't Disturb This Groove is no exception. 20 years ahead of it's time, it's like Ready For The World meets Depeche Mode. There's even MIDI (computer language) layered beneath the synth. Mic Murphy's R & B vocals are the perfect compliment to David Franks keyboards. The album is taut, so it carries well. My favorites are Didn't I Blow Your Mind? and Modern Girl.
When I was a kid.......2005-03-31
Back in '86 when I was in elementary I listened to The System on the radio everyday. Don't Disturb This Groove was a classic song. I liked the other songs but that particular song really stuck with me over the years and that song is still my favorite song that was ever made by any artist. If you don't own that album I suggest you get it before they stop selling it. Thanks to The System for the memories.

Wise words and cool tunes.......2007-03-28
I guess the most obvious way to differentiate Harry Manx from his peers is his use of Indian instruments, and in paricular the Mohan Veena. Well, actually what's unique and very refreshing is the way he integrates those sounds into a fusion of Blues and Americana that remind me of some of the other artists I love, but also stands out from them.
For all the exoticism of the instrumentation, Harry's songs are actually pretty accessible, and like the best songs are a bit mysterious in their actual meaning but give you a feeling that he's really saying something. Don't Take His Name Away is a terrific song about life and death and memory. I wonder who it's about.
Another standout song is A Single Spark, which has the trademark Indian sound mixed with an emotive blues sound and an intriguing, memorable lyric.
There's not a bad song on the album, though It Takes a Tear, a duet with a singer who's not really interesting enough, comes closest to being one you might want to skip past.
I like the production, even though it sounds at times almost too clean and bright for Blues. The production favours the sound of the Indian instruments, and the couple of instrumentals using those instruments sound fantastic.
On the whole, one of the best albums I've heard for some time. I can see I'll be enjoying this one for years to come.
Love it and Love Harry Manx.......2007-01-10
I love this CD, I love Harry Manx, he is so blusey and his voice and music is undescrible, I recommend this CD for every blues lover and sitar music lover. Highly recommended.
exotic, yet strangely timeless.......2006-05-17
While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to color way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music. In addition to picking Hawaiian-style flat-top à la David Lindley, Ben Harper, or Kelly Joe Phelps, Manx plays the mohan veena-a 20-string archtop developed by Indian slide wizard Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. East/West fusions can sometimes sound forced or awkward, but Manx-who studied with Bhatt for five years-dodges that bullet. On Mantras for Madmen, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, tamboura, tabla, and haunting female voices swirl seamlessly around intricate slide melodies, creating an exotic, yet strangely timeless sound. Drawing from blues, ragas, and the story-telling heritage of British Isles folk music, Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.
another level for Harry.......2006-01-20
I've been listening to Manx' blues ever since I caught him in concert here in New Mexico. "Road Ragas" being my favorite until this new release which really showcases his talent at writing songs, let alone the unique Indian instrument (I would write the name but would slaughter the spelling-a sitar/guitar cross)he plays them to. Don't let Mantra in the title sway you into thinking this is true sanskrit mantra (which I also listen to) but I think it is his way of honoring his unique East/West style and he does have a terrific sense of humor which also prevails in his songs. Good go Harry-come back to New Mexico soon!

Where is the bass Maceo?.......2005-06-15
After reading the many 'rave' reviews about this album (and having the odd album of Maceo's already) I promptly followed suit and ordered my own. I must say that after listening to it I was fairly unimpressed.
Yes there is definitely some great funk on here and virtuoso playing. But, and here's a few butts for ya!
1) Where is the bass??? - I have a high end audio system and I would have to say that this is about the most anemic disc I have ever heard! The one very thing that funk needs is a solid backbeat and bottom end and this disc just doesn't have any. With any luck you can crank on the bass control on your system but why do we have to do this? The recording/mastering engineers should have known better.
2) Candy Dulfer - might be pretty but she doesn't add anything funky to this disc. Reminiscent of Kenny G and would have been better off this album.
3) Maceo's singing (assuming its him) - better spent wrapping his lips around a reed. Sweet Georgia is a tired old tune, not much for funk either and basically is a big lead sinker.
4) 'So Good' sped up wasn't very inspiring either and the original James Brown version (which he obviously would have played on also) just wipes it by comparison. Nothing inspiring with this selection.
I could go on, but these were the main beefs...
I'm sure the guy is great live, but this record, judged on its merits (rather than some memory of a concert of years ago that others seem to be recalling) is only average.
Cheers, Kendrick
Ooooh, what's that you're doin'? Sure looks good to me!.......2005-04-06
This is the best live performance ever recorded, EVER. I'd give my right leg to have been there.
Any drummers here? There's enough tight licks to send you to the woodshed to practice for a decade. Almost every backbeat sends chills down my spine.
This album is truly a testament to instrumental musicians. Everybody plays their part, nobody steps on anyone else, each musician inspires the others to play their best, and the result is a sublime collective whole. Machines will never groove as hard humans, and this album is proof.
I'm on my third copy in over a decade, the CDs just can't seem to hold up to the amount of times I play them.
If for nothing else, to rock your party.......2005-02-12
This album is great and in heavy rotation from my collection. The version of "Shake Everything You Got" will bring any room full of loungers and chatters to their feet and really get the party rolling.
The greatest way to discover Maceo Parker.......2004-12-30
Undoubtedly the greatest way to discover Maceo Parker. This live recorded at Cologne in 1992 bring together Maceo, Fres Wesley, Pee We Elis and more guest (Kim Mazel, Candy Dufler...).

Maceo needs a crown - he'e the king........2004-10-05
Maceo Parker was always James Brown's right-hand man, and for good reason. He is one smokin' sax player. But he's more than that. He's one of very few icons in the world of funk. Ask anyone. It just doesn't get as good as Maceo. He's raw, powerful and sooooo soulful. Like some of the other reviewers, I've had the good fortune of seeing him live a few times, and he never disappoints. Most people his age are kicking back in their Lazy-Boys and collecting their retirement checks. Maceo is out there blowin' his horn so hard the roof could fly off the building. And like few live albums out there, this album is actually able to capture a lot of that vibe. Played through some good speakers, "Life On Planet Groove" is liable to get the dead up and dancing.

One of his best.......2007-03-08
A little know fact is that Gerald Levert turned down the huge All 4 One song I Swear so he hooked up with the same producer for the huge single I'd Give Anthing. I'd Give Anything was the lead single from his Groove On CD. Gerald Levert's emotive baritone excels on Groove On. The Levert feel is evident on every side. Productions, arrangements and songs are by Gerald Levert and Edwin Nicholas, save for a couple, the most notable being "I'd Give Anything" by David Foster. "Answering Service" stands out with its opening monologue; "Have Mercy" illustrates Gerald's powerful begging style of delivery to perfection.
Correction.......2007-02-24
To the reviewer below me. "Groove On" is NOT Gerald Levert solo debut Cd.
It was "Private Line" that came out in 1991 but I will agree that I favor the "Groove On" as his best Cd to date.
Groove On is Definitely One of Gerald's Best Pieces.......2006-11-12
This was Gerald's first solo CD and like with many first CDs, I believe it's his best of all of his CDs. I absolutely liked every cut except for the first cut which was the title cut "Groove On". I could do without that but hey, everything else makes up for it. This is real down home soul. This is the type of music babies are made on. I still say Luther was good but had nothing on Gerald. They are two different types artists. Luther sings nice and crisp, but when Gerald sings certain songs, you feel it down in your soul. I give this CD 5 Stars hands up. This CD is a collectors item and just full of good soul gritty Gerald Levert songs. You can not go wrong with this CD.
Exceptional voice - He will be missed @}->---.......2006-11-11
I couldn't believe it when I heard this morning that Gerald had died at only 40 years old. Unbelievable. He was such an amazing talent - a powerful and silky smooth baritone voice that was gorgeous to listen to.
This is one of my favourite cd's of his. It has one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard on it - I'd Give Anything. That is a fantastic song that I still love after all of these years. I also really love Same Place, Same Time and Have Mercy. It's one of his best cd's and certainly one of my favourites (apart from G.). His voice was so full of emotion and it stands out here really well. It's a stunning love cd and it is full of bedroom music. I really recommend this to all R&B fans and fans of his in general. To know that we won't hear any more new music is the biggest shame. At least we can hear this over and over to hear his voice whenever we want. Go get a copy of this - it's worth every penny.
Solo Success.......2004-07-11
this is without a doubt the best gerald levert album ever. stepping out of the shadow of his father eddie levert of the ojays, gerald comes through with a cd that is totally mind blowing. gerald is musical genious who could teach some of todays r&b singers how to do it.
