Amazon.com essential recording
As a superstar who's revered by both the young country audience and traditionalists, Alan Jackson is at his finest when he's steers clear of trifles like "Chattahoochie" and takes those younger fans to school. Here he does just that by paying respects to Hank ("Midnight in Montgomery"), swearing allegiance to George Jones ("Don't Rock the Jukebox"), and calling out all those newcomers who've decided it's time to get twangy now that country's hot ("Gone Country"). All of it pales next to "Here in the Real World," however, as perfect a honky-tonk weeper as mainstream Nashville has produced in 30 years. --David Cantwell

As I've seen with every order....absolutely excellent quality. Can't get better.
impressive.......2006-11-02
Alan Jackson is a true country singer who sticks to traditional country songs. This album features many of those songs such as "Midnight in Montgomery," "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow," "Don't Rock the Jukebox," and "Tall Tall Trees." It features a very impressive collection of songs that will go down as some of the greatest ever recorded. I rank this as one of my favorite albums, and I'm glad I got it. AJ is truly a great singer. If you can find this album, get it!

What once seemed Queen's greatest liabilities--a preening flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality--have ironically become their most enduring charms in a gray, postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves like "Stone Cold Crazy" and "Tie Your Mother Down" for the band's more quirky club-beat string of latter-day hits, this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band's music and fame. Some songs may not be instantly familiar to American fans because of yet another irony: just as their U.S. fortunes waned during the punk and new wave era, the band was exploding into true international superstars. Thus, there may be a sense of discovery here, whether of latter-day Queen material or solo work by Brian May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on "Barcelona" with diva Montserrat Caballé transcends boundaries of both time and genre. A previously unreleased live performance of "The Show Must Go On" featuring Elton John on vocals is also included. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The ULTIMATE Queen collection!!.......2007-06-19
What more is there to say... the Ultimate Queen collection! This is a great collection of songs and any Queen lover will most certainly love this compliation of recordings.
I recommend that any Queen lover get this!!
Just what I wanted!.......2007-03-29
While this is not the completely definitive collection as some of the purists in other reviews would want, this is exactly what I wanted. I do not have any other Queen recordings and I was looking for a package that contained as much as possible in a single set. I am listening to this almost exclusively in the month since I received it and I am not worn out yet.
If you don't have any Queen and you want to buy just one set, this will cover just about everything. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is the obvious omission of "Tie Your Mother Down" and a couple of recording level issues on a couple of tracks, notably "We will rock you, We are the Champions" which are strangely muted relative to most of the other tracks.
Very good.......2007-02-10
I was kind of skeptical buying this CD set, considering that I already own Classic Queen, but I figured I had nothing to lose but $26. I bought it, and here is my opinion:
Disc 1 has most of the Queen hits that are known to almost every classic rock and Queen fan alike. The only disappointment (in my opinion) on this disc was that the full version of Fat Bottomed Girls was not used.
Disc 2 has most of their other hits. Some notable ones include I Want to Break Free, Under Pressure, The Show Must Go On, Hammer to Fall, and Who Wants to Live Forever, which was edited but the full version can be found on Classic Queen.
Disc 3 is not great, but it's good. It has some songs that shouldn't be there, but the only hits on there are Princes of the Universe, Heaven for Everyone, Thank God It's Christmas, and the Somebody to Love duet with George Michael.
Overall, this was a good CD set. If you are a first-timer or a collector, this is good for you. But it's good for anyone, really.
queen.......2007-01-19
I HAVE WORN OUT TWO SETS OF THIS COLLECTION, THIS IS TO REPLACE ONE, WORN OUT AGAIN, THANKS FOR OFFERNING A TRIPLE SET
Love it!.......2007-01-16
I was not a big fan of Queen-though I've always liked their music, just never owned any of it. I bought it during the holidays for my kids (6,5,&3)for our car trip to Florida. They LOVED it!! Seriously!! My three yr.old likes the "funny song" -Another One Bites the Dust & can sing it word for word-my 5 yr.old loves Killer Queen & Don't Stop Me Now & just about all the other songs on the CD. I thought they would like it because the Chicken Little movie has We are the Champions & all 3 of them sing it...& I was right.

Dionne Warwick's vocals were never more strong, more vulnerable than when she sang the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David--and, oh, yeah, "Who Can I Turn To" and the theme from "Valley of the Dolls," the two non-Bacharach/David songs included among the 24 singles collected here. Both technically and emotionally, this was an unstoppable team: from the drama of "Don't Make Me Over" to the tongue-in-cheek backing singers on "Are You There (With Another Girl)," the barely veiled civil-rights message of "Reach Out for Me" to the deceptively bouncy "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," this CD sheds light on one of the most perfect marriages of pop form and content this side of Sinatra's classic Capitol work. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Bacharach / David and Warwick.......2007-06-14
First of all I brought this album about four years ago.Every now and then when I"m feeling a bit nostalgic I"ll give it a play.So the other day when I was feeling a bit nostalgic I put the album in my CD player. And while I was listening to it I decided to put a few words about it down on paper.Very few musical collaborations have been as successful as the team of Bacharach,David and Warwick. The music that these three people produced had such a strong impact on the music of the 60"s.And the impact is stillcontinuing to some degree to this day.Hardly a day goes by that you don"t hear at least one of these songs on tv or on the radio.Mr Burt Bacharach the brilliant composer seem to be able to pick beautiful melodies out of thin air.Mr Hal David the lyrical genius,he just had a way with words. And last but not least the golded voice of Ms Dionnie Warwick. What a great team. The great songs on this album are just to numerous to mention one by one.So I"m just going to name a few of my favorites. They are 'The April Fools","Walk On By","Reach Out For Me","Promises Promises","I Say A Little Prayer" and "Anyone Who Had A Heart".The arrangements of these songs still sound great. But over the years Mr Bacharach as redone some of them,on his own and with other people. And given them a more modern sound. And Ms Warwick still sings some of them as part of her stage show. And who can blame her, these songs are masterpieces. What I like most about this album is,you get the full version of each song.No song is cut short. So if you like the music of the 60"s this is the album for you.It has all the hits on it.And it"s just great music to listen to.Here"s to the good old days.
I bought it...and I'd buy it again.......2007-05-31
This is a comprehensive double-CD collection of Dionne's AM radio hits from the 60's. I just as strongly recommend Dionne as the foremost interpreter of Burt Bachrach's music.
The sound quality is great. Rhino Records did a nice job, in this area, and the liner notes provide a good bit of information. Dionne's performances of these songs are flawless. She has great range and feeling, as well as subtlety and restraint. "Windows of the World," for example, sends a shiver up my spine. The hasty "San Jose'" is also a treat. The quantity of music presented is more than enough; you won't hear any 60's Warwick song on the radio not presented here, although this results in some unevenness. Burt Bachrach's composition is super.
I couldn't give it 5 stars because some of the musical arrangements don't hold up well, and probably sounded schlocky when they came out, even over the tinny radio speaker of a 1966 Ford Fairlane on its way to San Jose. But you know that going in. Lyricist Hal David was most effective when he kept it spare and light ("Walk On By"), not when he tried to communicate socially "relevant" ideas (e.g. - "Message to Michael" - mobile society; "Windows of the World" - Vietnam). Not every song on the collection is to my taste. It's hard to find enough great material to fill a double greatest hits album, but most of this is quite good. Anyone who likes Dionne's 60's radio hits or needs a comprehensive sampling of Bachrach-David at their creative peak, should look here. (Adapted from my review of 12/20/1999.)
great songs, great singer.......2007-05-07
These are the hits she had in the sixties and early seventies, mostly Bacharach-David tunes, all original recordings. Excellent compilation, another one my wife has borrowed, passing the wife test. Don't "Walk On By" this collection, if you enjoy good music, and all her big hits of that era.
IT IS OKAY.......2007-03-09
THIS CD HAD MORE SONGS THAT I HAD NOT HEARD THAN THE ONES I WAS FAMILIAR WITH. IT'S A GOOD CD FOR DIE HARD DIONNE FANS, NOT JUST ONES THAT LIKE A FEW OF HER SONGS.
Pop Perfection.......2007-01-10
Whoever it was that pointed out, "Man cannot live by bread alone," certainly had a nice flair for aphorisms. Even the most demented audiophile, subsisting on a diet of Blue Cheer, Albert Ayler, Vanilla Fudge, and Sun Ra; occasionally feels a strange desire to be soothed by something that is, for want of a better word, nice. The demented audiophile must be careful at such moments, lest the pendulum swing horribly far to the opposite extreme. For example, many demented audiophiles have been banned from the best jazz clubs for life simply because they let it slip that, in moments of weakness, they played something by Barbra Streisand and actually enjoyed it.
The horror!
Fortunately for the demented audiophile, this Greatest Hits of Dionne Warwick is readily available. This CD is pop perfection, the synergy of Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Dionne Warwick is breathtaking. If you're lucky enough to have been raised on these classics cranking out of car radios, you'll be thrilled to hear them in their full acoustic glory - the sound quality is crystalline. Most noticeable is how good the arrangements are, and how disciplined. These songs were composed and recorded in an era when it was fashionable to goop up good music with massive banks of intrusive strings, pouring down like waterfalls of molten Velveeta cheese and smothering the quality. Considering this is pop fare - aimed squarely at the Top 40 - (remember that?) - the arrangements are wonderfully subdued, they actually enhance the beauty.
As to Ms. Warwick; a very soulful, emotional singer able to evoke feeling from the smallest lilt and a nicely turned phrase. A subtle, brilliant talent. I don't think I could ever hear Walk On By or You'll Never Get To Heaven too many times. Although, being a card-carrying demented audiophile, I must admit that there's something about hearing Roland Kirk play You'll Never Get To Heaven. Maybe Ellington was right, there are really only two kinds of music - good music and bad music. This CD is good music, real good.

Anyone who is still clueless about what a great singer Ronnie Dunn is need only grab this second greatest-hits package from Brooks & Dunn, a 17-song compilation that skims the commercial high points from the duo's 1998-2004 period. Dunn, the quintessential balladeer, soars on honky-tonk laments and reminiscences like "Red Dirt Road" and "How Long Gone," and on full-throated romantic plaints like "That's What She Gets for Loving Me" and "It's Getting Better All the Time." His sidekick, the underrated guitarist, utility singer, and all-around dynamo Kix Brooks, also gets his moment to shine on a marvelous '60s-style, 18-wheeler ditty called "Independent Trucker," one of three new cuts included here. --Bob Allen

Real Country.......2007-04-12
It's amazing to think they have more than enough for another greatest hits compilation! Full of originals that will always be greatest hits.
something missing .......2007-02-16
Ok, you see two stars up there and you start thinking to yourself "what
could possibly be wrong with this album" Well, there is something wrong
with this album. If you do not believe me then look it up for yourself.
This does have great songs on here and all of their hits to mention that.
But I just noticed something, and I have had this album for a year or
two. There is three songs that is not on here that was hits on the radio.
They might not have been big hits, but they did get air play. (missing
you) from their "tight rope" album (you'll always be loved by me) from
their "tight rope" album and (I am that man) from the "boarderline" album.
Brooks And Dunn - always Great!.......2007-01-09
I love this cd and all the songs on it! There is a great variety of their style music for all to enjoy. I would be hardpressed to find a favorite! I have other cd's of theirs and they are all good - including the Christmas cd. If you are a fan of theirs you will really enjoy this cd!
impressive/holds its own.......2006-11-04
While this collection doesn't quite hold up to the duo's first greatest hits compilation, it is still good. Hits like "How Long Gone," "The Long Goodbye," and "South of Santa Fe" are good choices for this album, which pretty much holds its own. If you are a fan of Brooks & Dunn, odds are you will like this album. The duo is still good after all these years, and I hope whey will continue for many more.
Great collection and service........2005-09-06
I was very pleased with the cd and the prompt service I received.

Legacy is the right title for this album. Boyz II Men were the original, modern-day boy band, predating both 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Heavily influenced by doo-wop groups such as the Platters and the Dells and developed by ex-New Edition member Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men quickly rose to heavyweight status after the foursome's 1991 debut, Cooleyhighharmony, their success based on romantic ballads and strong vocals. However, they lacked the charisma and looks to really make an impact on the world, and they're perhaps the only group that could be described as "quietly" selling 35 million records. This collection of their best moments concentrates on their strengths as crooning Cupids, exemplified by their massive hit and classic ballad "End of the Road" (taken from the Boomerang soundtrack). "Hey Lover," featuring LL Cool J, is as energetic as the album gets. Legacy is unabashedly assembled for lovers of slow, romantic bedroom soul. --Jake Barnes

Excellent CD. All their biggest hits. Great for any Boyz II Men fan!
Legacy Of Great Vocalists! Need to Expand CD!.......2007-04-30
'Legacy' by Boyz II Men was merely a decent compilation when it was first released, but with only 13 tracks, I felt short changed, and wasn't about to buy the re-released 2 disc version. I've followed Boyz II Men since 1991, and like many fans, have all of the CDs. With that in mind, I decided to create 'The Ultimate Boyz II Men Collection' that covers 1991 - 2002 perfectly. Here's the tracklisting, which results in a 80 minute single disc masterpiece...
1. Motownphilly
2. Uhh Ahh
3. It's So Hard To Say Goodbye...
4. End Of The Road (fr.'Boomerang' SDTK)
5. I'll Make Love To You
6. On Bended Knee
7. Water Runs Dry
8. One Sweet Day - Live Version! (w/Mariah)
9. Doin' Just Fine
10. Four Seasons Of Loneliness
11. A Song For Mama (fr.'Soul Food' SDTK)
12. I Will Get There (fr.'Prince Of Egypt' SDTK)
13. Pass You By
14. Thank You In Advance
15. The Color Of Love
16. That's Why I Love You
17. So Amazing (fr.'The Hurricane' SDTK)
BONUS TRACK 18. Sara Smile (2004)
So there you have it, the Ultimate Boyz II Men on a single CD!
Enjoy making this collection at home!

I bought this CD to listen to "A Song for Mama". My fiance was thinking of using it for his mother/song dance. We decided on another song but I am still happy that we purchased the CD. I don't own much R&B so it will add to my collection.
This CD Is Just Whatever.......2006-06-21
Boy II Men were extremely hot back in the day and I always wondered why. I tried to give them a chance by getting their "II" album, but I just couldn't get into them. They had a few good songs out, but, other than that, their music was quite lame. Not enough soul and not enough funk. They never got down and dirty. You get tired of the harmonizing because it's done all the time. None of these guys were attractive either. They just weren't, especially the one with the glasses who sang like he had a bunch of snot up his nose. My friends and I used to look at pictures of the group and they would say, "Yeah, that one's cute, that one's cute, this one is foooiine!" I just couldn't see the attractiveness anywhere. Their looks were mediocre and so was the music. "I'll Make Love To You" and "One Sweet Day" have to be the worse songs ever. I heard both of them on the radio the other day and it made me sick to the stomach. These guys are long gone, but thousands of other sorry guy groups of sprung up to replace them.

Customer Reviews:
Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06
Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.
Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.
Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.
"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.
The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.
I would recommend this to any classical lover.
If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.
The man was a genius.
I would also add that if you enjoy this, I recommend that you continue your Debussy experience with the following: Debussy: Orchestral Works I and Debussy: Orchestral Works II
This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08
After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.
THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12
I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.
SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???
THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.
OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.
Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23
I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.
i am dumb.......2004-07-01
And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

Not as good as expected.......2007-07-01
About 25% of the cuts on this CD are very obscure, not even hitting the top 50 on the charts, a couple above the top 100. The groups listed on the front of the case and the labels on the back show the best of the CD. They don't show the unknowns or little knowns. I question whether some should even be listed as bubble gum music, but that doesn't diminish their quality. There are 25 songs, but I liked only 18 at best. Look closely at the list of songs before buying.
Nostalgic bee bop bubblegum rock.......2007-03-08
What is it about these 2 minute songs that makes you want to find them, buy them and play them again and again. Could it be that the light headed lyrics can actually be heard, or is it that the catch tunes simply rekindle the past when life as a youth was full of so much promise and - i had a head full of hair - its the latter i think, and this albums collection of songs rekindles that old spirit as though it was all happening again. A particularly "lekker" compilation - but whatever happened to Tracy .............. ba ba papapa ba papapa ba

This was another cd I had a hard time not playing over and over. It had some cool songs on it that I had been looking for on cd and just never did. It's a great compilation with a lot of songs!

Compiling a great collection requires having all of the songs that made the past in music history. This album has songs that you just don't find on the normal "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits By".

Imagine a poppier Pat Benatar fronting a more dance-oriented Berlinbig vocals, big beats, big guitars--and you're just about there. Like fellow Swedes ABBA in the 1970s and A-Ha in the 1980s, platinum pixie Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle generate a bright, glossy sound that transcends borders. In 20 years, they've sold 45 million albums and 25 million singles, including four number ones. A Collection of Roxette Hits overlooks their 1986 debut Pearls of Passion and 1997's Baladas en Español in favor of their biggest international triumphs. All told: 12 album cuts, four singles, two remixes ("Dressed for Success" and "It Must Have Been Love"), and two new tracks ("One Wish" and "Reveal"). There are no real surprises, but Roxette has a few tricks up their shiny sleeves, like the harmonica solo in "Dangerous" (1988's Look Sharp!) and the children's chorus on "Stars" (1999's Have a Nice Day). This hook-filled collection is a fine overview for both old and new fans alike. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Better than I thought.......2007-06-08
I wanted to buy something that I would like to listen when I'm not alone in my car. Well, those 20 Greatest songs work. When I'm alone driving, I usually listen to Slayer, Sepultura, Sodom..... but with my wife, well... you know.... the first time that I played this cd with "company" in my car, I saw everyone following the music with their head, hands and legs, so I though "Perfect". If you want some easy-listening music, this cd is the chosen one....
Another Good Greatest Hits Collection but I'd Recommend For Those With No Albums to Get Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus Instead.......2007-06-03
Another great collection of 20 Roxette Hits but if you've got their other albums or even just their previous greatest hits collection Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus : Roxette's Greatest Hits there's not much new here for you. The cover insert of Don't Bore Us comes with the lyrics as well to their songs which this album insert doesn't do.
The only difference this album has song wise is that it includes songs from albums released after their album Crash Boom Bang which obviously since they weren't released yet didn't make it onto Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus. So if you haven't got (or haven't even heard of as they weren't that successfully promoted) the albums Have a Nice Day and Room Service or have bought the song A Thing About You that was the single release on another subsequent greatest hits album called Ballad Hits then this will give you the released songs from those albums. The 20th song (Reveal) is also a new release for this album but none of these songs are as good as their classic songs. I'd get Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus instead as it has more of their big songs than this greatest hits album if you're only going to buy one Roxette album. Otherwise they are a sensational band and I'd just buy all their independent albums and not worry about buying greatest hits albums at all!
Great!.......2007-03-31
I bought this CD because I loved the songs when I was a kid. What memories they bring back!
Probably the best Swedish pop/rock band besides ABBA.......2007-03-22
I say "probably the best Swedish pop/rock band besides ABBA" because I can't say I know a lot about Swedish music. However, I rate ABBA as one of the all time great bands, and probably the best pop group of all time [I rate The Beatles as the best group of all time and value them for their really weird songs...which aren't particularly pop]...so for Roxette to be compared favourably to them is a big call on my part.
Probably the main reason I bought this compilation was for the song "Fading like a flower". On the odd occasions I've heard this song, I've really enjoyed it. Listening to it for the first time on cd here, I can't say that it grabbed me as much as it did back then. However, before I listened to this cd all the way through, I must have listened to this song around a dozen times, which says a lot for me. I've been listening to it repeatedly since I've listened to the whole cd too. This song is back as an all time great pop classic in my estimation...up there with ABBA's best songs, and songs like: "What have I done to deserve this?" by the Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield; "Clocks" by Coldplay; "Do they know it's Christmas" by Band Aid; "Our lips are sealed" by The Go Gos; and, from Australia, "Chemistry" by Mondo Rock and "Green" by Alex Lloyd.
Roxette, apart from being very melodic and catchy popsters, have a harder rock sound than ABBA in their songs. So, in songs like "Fading like a flower" you get a very cool keyboard melody introducing the song, followed by a momentary rock power chord. The chorus to this song is great and the verses are nice too. The song also features some nice changes of pace and cool guitar rhythym in that slow part as well a really nice lead guitar there too.
The other song that I tend to play a lot, though not nearly as much as "Fading like a flower" is "Dressed for success". It features a cool rock guitar sound, catchy chorus and some cool drums.
Another song I quite like is "Dangerous". This is yet another catchy melody song which Roxette are so good at. Usually the female half of Roxette does all the singing, but here the male half has his share of lines. Hadn't really noticed the weird outro to this song before-the man sings some barely intelligible words.
Rest assured that the rest of the album is chock full of catchy pop/rock, which I won't delve into too much, suffice to say that Americans might rate some of Roxette's ballads higher than I do...songs like "Listen to your heart" which isn't a fave of mine and "It must have been love", which I wasn't expecting to like but on hearing it here it did have a lyrical charm to it.
As for the rest, I'll just mention songs that had me relating them to songs by other artists, e.g. something else that Roxette has in common with ABBA is songs with daggy lyrics, these would include: "Joyride", "Spending my time" [more so for mediations on relationships than being daggy], "Almost unreal" [back to dag central here]. "A thing about you" also features one of those trippy effects that The Beatles were so fond of. It's in the intro of this song whereas The Beatles liked to use stuff like this for outros.
Other songs which remind me of other artists: "How do you do" [The Beatles' version of "Twist and shout" can be heard in this song]; "Crash! Boom! Bang!" [Dusty Springfield]; "The centre of the heart" [Savage Garden]; and "Run to you", which had a guitar vibe which reminded me of Weddings, Parties, Anything's song "Monday's experts", which is, granted, more of a stretch for Roxette to have been influenced by.
The songs towards the end of this cd are not the kind of pop/rock that fills most of the preceding tracks. Best examples of that are "Crash! Boom! Bang!" and "Wish I could fly". The latter has a nice mellow, cool vibe to it. "Stars" is also a more dance orientated song...it features a trippy intro and tinny techno beat.
Another thing to recommend this band are that they widen the musical instruments that they use, e.g. instruments that sound like music box pianos, organs, steel string guitars and violins.
If you like catchy pop songs, you should love this album, so long as you don't mind the band's forays into rock for entire songs or parts of songs.
P.S. One possible criticism of this cd is that it, according to the sleeve notes, I think, does NOT have some of Roxette's songs which charted in Europe. On the upside, the new songs on this cd are surprisingly good...I mean they are not classics, but they are much better than you would expect such new songs lumped together into a best of compilation to be.
I did neglect to mention perhaps Roxette's biggest hit, The Look. Whilst this song has many good hooks/elements to it, the lyric "tasted like a raindrop", sung about a woman, remains a hurdle for me liking this song better! I.e. it sounds a rather naff lyric!
If you like this cd, you might want to read my reviews of other albums with a good pop sensibility, e.g.
Midnight Oil for masterful pop/rock. Politics never sounded so good.

Pop has a good time eating itself on this collection of Doctor Demento favorites. The tunes on this stylistically varied double CD send up a plethora of pop culture phenomena. The perpetrators come from every imaginable entertainment background. Pro wrestlers, folk singers, comedians, actors, garage bands--you never know who's liable to produce a novelty song. Here it doesn't matter if a respected composer or a one-hit wonder recorded the ditty; all sorts of tracks jostle each other on this funny collection. The material covers quite a time span, ranging from Spike Jones's "Der Fuehrer's Face," released in 1942, to "Wappin'," an unreleased track by Darrell Hammond and Christopher Snell which was a hit on Demento's radio show at the tail end of the 1980s. The 20th Anniversary Collection is quite an assortment of the corny, goofy, wacky, and wild. --Fred Cisterna

Why Does Music Have To Be So Seroius?.......2007-06-27
This album is just plain fun. It's great to have a nice collection of novelty songs to sprinkle in during a party or when making compilation discs for long drives or just and evening of fun with some friends.
Dr. Demento's collection surely won't be one of those precious "desert island" albums, those must have albums one would never be caught without, but in the context of a complete collection, it's good to have a few laughs here and there.
You'd really have to be a baby-boomer to appreciate the full context of this album as many are from the before the 1970's, still have some fun, why not?
Lots of fun.......2007-06-27
My son suggested this as a birthday gift to his older sister, from him to her - I think I've listened to it more than either of them.
Perfect.......2007-05-19
I've been looking for some of these songs for a loooong time. Not only do I get to relive my adolescence, but I'm able to introduce my daughter (who shares my sense of humor) to some of my old favorites (G rated, of course)
A "Must-Have" For Dr. Demento Lovers.......2007-04-20
Unbeknownst to my conservative mother, my brother and I (born in the late 60's) listened to a wonderful radio program called "Dr. Demento" growing up. I told my mother about that recently, and her remark was that if she had known it was on the radio, she wouldn't have let us listen to it! LOL Anyhow, this collection has the vast majority of MY old favorites, such as the otherwise unavailable "Existential Blues", and many others unfamiliar to me to enjoy. It comes in two CD's of 18 songs each. I have happily imported it into my iPod and can't wait to hear everything!
The funniest CDs ever!.......2007-03-08
I used to have this CD collection back in college, and something recently reminded me of a song and I knew exactly where to buy it. I am very pleased with this collection of songs.

Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection (Shawn Colvin).......2005-09-17
A great collection of fine tunes, with the unique style and arrangements of Shawn Colvin. You wouldn't mistake her for anyone else. Some of the material reminds one of more recent work by Joni Mitchell. This might be due to the musical influence of Larry Klein who has worked with both artists and is featured on some tracks of this recording. A particular treat is Shawn's rendition of Lennon & McCartney's "I'll Be Back". Its hauntingly beautiful and simple guitar work, and a slower tempo than the Beatles' original version allow the listener to savor the lyrics, as only Shawn Colvin can so sweetly and heart-breakingly deliver them. This is a very good recording and certainly a must for the collection of any true Shawn Colvin fan.
The best songs from the first half of Shawn Colvin's music career.......2005-08-02
I saw Shawn Colvin in concert the other night at the Big Tent Chautauqua south of Bayfield, Wisconsin, and she was introduced as a three time Grammy winner. Of course two of those Grammys were for "Sunny Came Home," which won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1998. But the third Grammy was earned for her her first studio album, 1989's "Steady On," which won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. I first picked up "A Few Small Repairs," not so much because it had "Sunny Came Home" on it, but because I was going to see Colvin perform at Lilith Fair and was buying the albums of all of the performers. From there I went back and got the rest of her work and several years down the road I am still of the opinion that "Sunny Came Home" was an invitation to check out her other albums. By definition Colvin might be a one hit wonder ("I Don't Know Why" is her only other Top 20 success making it to #16 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, but that misses the point of Colvin's music. There is a reason that she is touring with only a pair of guitars, and the trip down memory lane provided by "Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection" only serves to reinforce the point.
These 15 songs represent selections from all of her main releases except for her Christmas album, "Holiday Songs and Lullabies," plus one new track with her cover of the Beatles song "I'll Be Back." The songs are laid out chronologically by album, although in fact the first three tracks are the same three that opened up "Steady On," namely the title track, "Diamond in the Rough," and "Shotgun Down the Avalanche" (the latter remaining my favorite Colvin tune). All three are Colvin lyrics written to the melodies of her songwriting partner, John Leventhal, and I find it interesting that they are presented in the same order, which I read to be an implicit acknowledgment of how codified they are in the minds of her fans (yes, sometimes I listen to just those three tracks when I play that album, or, more to the point, I always make sure I listen to those three tracks).
From "Fat City" we have "Round Of Blues," "Polaroids," and "I Don't Know Why." Her "Cover Girl" album provides "Every Little Thing [He] Does is Magic" and "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)," which is where I want to quibble because I think her best cover is of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," a fact she proved again last Saturday night (as much for the guitar playing as the singing). The order ir rearranged, but the first four tracks from "A Few Small Repairs" make it as well, with "Sunny Came Home," "You And The Mona Lisa," "Get Out Of This House," and "The Facts About Jimmy." See a pattern of always putting her best foot forward on an album, do you? Absolutely, because "Whole New You" and "A Matter of Minutes" are the first two tracks from her 2001 album "Whole New You," albeit in reverse order.
Except for the counter proposal above, the tracks collected for this album are on point, which is always nice to see with a greatest hits album. Colvin did over half of these songs in her concert, and after hearing the stripped down versions it seems strange to hear the studio versions. But hearing the "unplugged" versions simply reminds us that Colvin's strengths are her ability to write lyrics (the best part of "Sunny Came Home" are the lyrics) and her singing, with the husky but high voice that has matured gorgeously over the years. Colvin is working on a new album for release next February, which will pave the way for a second collection of her best songs (calling them hits seems counterproductive in this case) sometime next decade.
Greatest Hits? Well, sort of..........2005-02-07
Like the other reviews here, this collection isn't EXACTLY a "greatest hits" collection. For one thing, one of Shawn Colvin's best-known songs is "Nothing On Me," which was used as the theme song for the television series SUDDENLY SUSAN, but that song is not found here. If being a TV theme song doesn't qualify as a "greatest hit," I'm not sure what would.
Other than that one exception, this really is a collection of Ms. Colvin's best-known work. It's a great item for the casual fan or new listener (unless you're looking for the theme song to SUDDENLY SUSAN, of course), and if you're a completist you have to get it for the new song.
What could have made this package more attractive to all fans would have been to include some other rarities as bonus tracks, or even a second disc of odds & ends. As it is, it's not her "best," nor is it a complete "greatest hits," but it is a good collection of great songs.
Nearly perfect.......2005-01-04
I have enjoyed Shawn Colvin's music since discovering her in the early '90s when I first heard the song "Polaroids." Many of Colvin's best songs are here, including "Round of Blues" and "Sunny Came Home," but there are a few recordings here that simply are not among her best, specifically "The Facts About Jimmy" and Colvin's vapid version of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic." While "Greatest Hits" is an ambitious title for this CD, it does, overall, showcase a fine folk-pop talent in top form. Recommended.
A few small snapshots.......2004-12-18
I fell in love with Shawn Colvin the first time I heard the "Steady On" Cd. Coming from the same Greenwich Village folk scene that fostered friend Suzanne Vega's success (she contributes background vocals on "Diamonds In The Rough" here), Colvin also favors the same tough/tender style that highlights Vega's best work. From early on, Colvin maintained an independent woman's voice, especially on songs like "Steady On" and "Another Round Of Blues." She seemed headed towards the same kind of success Tracy Chapman, 10,000 Maniacs and Vega were enjoying, but she had a commercial and critical misfire with the covers album, the ill advised "Cover Girl."
Although that album was just the wrong choice at the wrong time, it did highlight Colvin's ability as an interpretive singer. On "Polaroid," The Police's "Every Little Thing (S)he Does Is Magic" and Talking Heads' "This Must Be The Place" are claimed as her own. (Also worth hearing, Colvin's sublime cover of Warren Zevon's "Tenderness On The Block" off "Fat City.") It may have been a sidestep, but "Cover Girl" was just a stepping stone to "A Few Small Repairs." The feistier sound and more aggressive stance gave Colvin the only real "hit" on this collection and a song of the year Grammy for "Sunny Came Home." But you also got the confrontational "Get Out Of This House" to back it up.
The long awaited success was short lived, as Colvin decided to take time out and become a parent. She then delivered "A Whole New You," which was a pleasant enough record but nothing revelatory. The title track, which harkens back to the earlier albums, is included here. And to once again highlight Colvin's strength as a songstress, her cover of The Beatles' "I'll Be Back" underlines that song's melancholy in a rock solid manner.
It is hard to recommend this to anyone but the curious, since there is only one new selection (The Beatles' cover) and almost all the individual albums are noteworthy in their own write. But if you only know of Shawn Colvin from that one "Sunny" song, then take a "Polaroid" home. Also worth getting, the DVD companion collection to this CD.
