Another Marvin Gaye overview/introduction? Why not? Pulling together the usual hits from "I'll Be Doggone" to "Grapevine," "What's Going On" to "Let's Get It On" to "Sexual Healing"--all musts for any R&B or pop fan--this two-CD set also offers treats for the Marvin connoisseur. Foremost are the previously unreleased "Where Are We Going?" which marries Nixon-era (and beyond) social concerns to a lilting groove that brings to mind Spinners records of the period, and an alternate mix of Gaye's rare version of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." Very Best also pays proper tribute to Gaye's final years at Motown with the full 11-plus minutes of the intensely, casually funky "Got to Give It Up," Here, My Dear's smoldering "Anger," and several tracks from the under-heard Love Man/In Our Lifetime sessions. More than just a profit-generating package from the parent company, it's a loving, rounded selection that's sure to widen newcomers' perceptions of a great artist's creativity and spirit. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Man and his Music...........................2007-01-12

Yeah it's missing some of the other great songs from Marvin. That means go buy the album that contains the other hits.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Marvin.......2006-06-24

The name Marvin Gaye says it all. They don't call him Marvelous Marvin for nothing. Truly one of the most gifted vocalists-performers of all time - an excellent compilation.
This CD is loaded with great tunes and I can't think of anyone who can match Marvin's song list. It's long, wide and deep. An incredibly talented man. I Want You, Ain't That Peculiar, Inner City Blues and Trouble Man really stand out for me - these songs are quite unusual and really stand the test of time and I can't imagine anyone even trying to do it like him.
You can't say enough about him.

5 out of 5 stars a cd collection item.......2005-11-22

I Love this cd. Since im only 21 I don't really know anything about marvin gaye but from what people and parents tell me, until now. I brought this cd and WOW this has shown me a lot about Marvin Gaye and though out his life. I think that this is my favorite cd I have in my collection.I Love every song on here. I can't say which songs its missing to have it even more complete but its fine the way it is.I would recommend this cd to my age so they can learn about real soul music. For me it wasnt just about buying it to listen to, it was about my history. I feel that not only can you go to the library, watch the history channel, but i also can just push play on my stereo. I really listen to this cd and envy all the people that witness his performance when he was alive. my favorite song on here to me is the where are we going. I won't break down every song cause i believe that if a person like marvin gaye then they would like it anyway. listening to this cd he is my favorite artist, not rkelly, and not usher. I think this cd should be in everyone randb collection.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven...could've been one disc........2005-08-15

This comp features soaring highs and really low lows. Take the first disc: Stubborn Kind of Fella, Hitch Hike, How Sweet It Is, I'll Be Doggone, Ain't That Peculiar, It Takes Two, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, Ain't No Duet Without Ain't In It's Name (Okay, I made that up), I Heard It Through the Grapevine and Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby are all very strong numbers. However, they are countered by What Were They Thinking?-type songs. For all practical purposes (I love saying that!), Pride and Joy and Wonderful One are the same song. A couple of the duets do nothing for me, and a few of the orchestrated songs are just blah. The second disc is the same way...classics What's Going On, Mercy Mercy Me, Inner City Blues (my favorite track), Trouble Man, Let's Get It On and Got to Give It Up are met with...You're the Man? Ego Tripping Out? Come Get to This? I Want You? PRAISE??? In spite of this lack of balance, it's still a good comp, it just could've been made into one disc.

4 out of 5 stars it is definitive and complete, but not that important.......2005-03-11

I really like these songs, but they seem a little contrived and not "important" (best description I think) because they are just so focused on being soulful that they kind of miss the mark. I have found that a lot of popular music seems to do this, and Marvin Gaye is leagues ahead of those people, but honestly I was a little dissappointed after I was done listening. Al Green's music seems much better to me, I got both cd's at the same time. I would still recommend this cd, if you have heard songs like "lets get it on" or whatever and you REALLY like them. contrived sappy singing and little bitty complaints just don't do it for me in music, and I felt that many songs were like this on the set. I still enjoy it, but not that much. Al Green's greatest hits is a much better choice for a new fan expanding into the genre. Also Otis Redding.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For Brits, this is the best single CD of Marvin's music.......2005-04-13

You cannot fit all of Marvin's hits on a single CD but this collection has most of the essentials from a British perspective. One advantage that this has over the double CD (Very best of, which was compiled in America but released in both the UK and USA) is that it includes three UK top ten hits that are not on the double CD, these being Onion song (supposedly with Tammi Terrell, though Tammi was too ill to record the song and a sound-alike substituted), You are everything (with Diana Ross) and Abraham Martin and John (which was an American hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, not Marvin Gaye).

There is no room on this CD to explore Marvin's career in depth or to explore the many American hits that didn't chart in Britain, but it does contain all his important British hits (some minor hits have been omitted) and on that basis, it provides an excellent overview of Marvin's career. Nevertheless, before buying this, you may wish to compare it with the double CD, Very best of (now re-issued as Gold).

5 out of 5 stars The Best Love Makin' CD Around.......2000-12-15

Marvin is the man, there is no doubt about it. If you're looking for some lovin' then this is the CD you need to pop in the player on those cold lonely nights and the women will flock. Many a' nights this CD has warmed my home with sweet, sweet noises. I highly, HIGHLY recomend this CD for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars KING OF MOTOWN!.......2000-08-24

Marvin Gaye has got to be the most definitive man of soul! His politically aware songs such as, WHAT'S GOING ON and smooth, lush love songs like, SEXUAL HEALING are fine, well remembered classics. He was Motowns leading male artist and his collaboration with the queen of Motown, the equally magical DIANA ROSS, are amongst some of his greatest work with the timeless, unforgetable classic, YOU ARE EVERYTHING as well as the fabulous collection of songs he cut with Ross for their classic 1973 album, DIANA AND MARVIN. He also worked with Motowns other great female vocalsists such as KIM WESTON on the classic, IT TAKES TWO and TAMMI TERRELL (his most famous partner who sadly passed away of a brain tumour in 1970) who he cut countless classics with such as, YOU'RE ALL I NEED TO GET BY, THE ONION SONG and AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING. This wonderful compilation offers all of these classics with notable and inevitable highlights being, I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE, LETS GET IT ON, ABRAHAM,MARTIN AND JOHN and MERCY,MERCY ME. Every tracks a classic and Gayes' voice remains as unique and unmatched as his songwriting talents. An album that must be had in any soul/R and B collection!

5 out of 5 stars CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME.......2000-04-30

WHILE THIS CD MAY NOT HAVE EVERY ONE OF THE LATE, GREAT SINGER'S HITS, IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME. IT'S A SHAME THAT MOTOWN FAILED TO PUT OUT A SINGLE DISC "ULTIMATE COLLECTION" FOR IT'S 2 TOP MALE STARS (GAYE AND WONDER) AS IT HAS DONE FOR ALMOST ALL OF IT'S OTHER ACTS. WITH NO SINGLE CD GREATEST HITS PACKAGE CONTAINING "SEXUAL HEALING" (BECAUSE IT WAS ON SONY, NOT MOTOWN) AVAILABLE IN THE U.S., I WAS FORCED TO SEEK OUT THIS IMPORT (FROM CANADA). BELIEVE ME, IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT AND EFFORT. IT CONTAINS "SEXUAL HEALING" AND MOST OF HIS OTHER MAJOR HITS. HOW DID I KNOW THIS AHEAD OF TIME? AMAZON.COM WAS KIND ENOUGH TO LIST THE TRACKS OF THIS IMPORT (WHICH IT DOESN'T DO ENOUGH OF). AM I A HAPPY CAMPER? YOU BET! MARVIN IS REPRESENTED IN MY CD JUKEBOX WITHOUT MY HAVING TO BUY A MULTI-DISC MOTOWN SET THAT WILL CERTAINLY BE FULL OF FILLER BUT MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT CONTAIN SOME OF HIS SONY WORK. SHOULD YOU MAKE THE EFFORT TO GET THIS CD? ONLY IF YOU LOVE MARVIN ENOUGH TO WANT TO HEAR THE SONGS THAT SPAN THE GAMUT OF HIS TRAGICALLY SHORTENED, BUT NO LESS STELLAR, CAREER. BUY THIS CD AND LET'S GET IT ON.

Amazon.com essential recording

Balancing raw power with shades of vulnerability, Gaye rose to the top of Motown's roster without the benefit of a supporting vocal group. Whether singing love songs or social commentary, Gaye's voice displays an earnestness and sincerity that are a soul singer's most potent weapons. Among these 47 hits are his memorable duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell along with Motown staples such as "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is," "Ain't That Peculiar," and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This 2 CD set also covers socially conscious 1970s originals such as "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and "Inner City Blues." Only his last hit, "Sexual Healing," is left out. --Marc Greilsamer

1 out of 5 stars best of marvin gaye.......2006-03-20

i had the original motown cd...the one i ordered from
amazon was a HORRIBLE sound quality. the outside of the cd
said it was done in 'germany'...the sound was hollow and
scratchy. i returned it with a minimal amt of trouble.

5 out of 5 stars An impeccable collection of classic Marvin.......2005-12-13

I am not used to writing reviews but I had to for this item. This is the most comprehensive collecion of classics from Marvin Gaye, especially the second disc. He has had such an influence from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and continues to be a legendary force in music. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Marvin Gaye album, please go with this one. It will give you a balanced and enjoyable experience with the beauty of his music and will leave you wondering why you hadn't done it sooner. I was 18 when I "borrowed" this album from my mother and don't think she will love it as much as I have consistantly loved it for the past 5 years.

5 out of 5 stars Amazon has double listed the 2nd disc.......2005-04-04

The track listing for the second disc has been repeated. There are only twenty (20) songs on the second CD, not forty (40).

BTW, great album. This is the best 'best of' collection/ compilation/ anthology of Marvin Gaye's work, outside of the box set.

5 out of 5 stars Superb anthology .......2004-11-28

Marvin Gaye was a great singer who lived from 1939-1984. He had a tremendous vocal ability that allowed him to sing sweet soul music, politically-aware commentaries, hard funk, disco-ish stuff and eco-friendly classics all with equal conviction. As a boy in 1985 I remember TWO tribute songs to him that charted in the US Top 10 - a measure of the esteem in which he and his music was held. As one of the original Motown artists, he helped to define the golden era of mid-60's pop music, and trumped even this with his great album What's Going On in 1971.

This superb anthology from the Motown vaults is packed with great songs, and I have been a big fan of this record since discovering it in 2001. I cannot recommend this more highly to those Amazon shoppers who may yet be unaware of this great vocalist.

By the way, these Motown Anthology 2CD sets are not to be missed. Try out The Supremes and The Temptations also in this series.

5 stars!!

5 out of 5 stars The Diary of a Motown and Soul Music Legend.......2004-05-18

Now I know that some of you are disappointed that Marv's last hit (at least on the pop charts), "Sexual Healing", is not in this fabulous collection of classic hits but let's face it, it chronicles his time as a MOTOWN artist. So of course they weren't going to include an out-of-label hit even if the hit was viable to that star's career. Same thing they did with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson's anthologies.

Anyway, this 2-CD (or 2-tape) collection of 67 songs, 40-some known hit singles and some album cuts, b-sides and rarities is the PERFECT album for a true artist like Marvin Gaye was. Many cats can only wish that they can have the hit catalogue that this brotha from the Chocolate City had! I mean, he was not only just a popular singer who recorded some of the 20th century's greatest songs and albums known to mankind, but he was also a great writer, producer, arranger, mixer, musician and instrumentalist not to mention he already had a career as a lead singer of two R&B groups in the late-'50s before signing with Motown in 1961 to be a jazz singer (his original intention of rebelling against what people were telling him how he should be).

And then you can't forget his LEGENDARY and AMAZING duets with classic R&B female legends like Mary Wells (the first female superstar of Motown), Kimberly Weston, the wonderful and memorable Tammi Terrell and last but not least the Motown Queen, Diana Ross. So not only has his career spread four decades but in the middle of it, he was able to be in a couple of groups, be a legendary duet partner and he even played in a couple of movies or three.

But anyway back to the anthology set of Marvin! The man's hit career spreads into three or four or even five different periods at a time:

Suave Gentleman (1962-67)
Soul Loverman (1967-70)
Patriotic Ghetto Warrior (1971-1972)
Romantic and Erotic Ladies' Man (1973-1977)
Confessional Ghetto Preacher (1978-1981)

The first CD (full of 20 solo hits and 7 wonderful duets) may be the most interesting of the anthology set. It shows Marvin at first reaching his inner Sam Cooke in the early portion of his career going from "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to "Baby Don't U Do It" and then finding his own voice slowly from "How Sweet It Is" and then finally finding his vocal POWER in songs like "You" (check out the HIGH note near the middle of the song!) and "Grapevine". And then there's the memorable duets with Tammi Terrell that are the essence of true soul. Marvin & Tammi should both be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just for the five songs listed on the album.

But then again, the second CD of the anthology set can be the most complex! I mean, this is when Marvin Gaye took FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL and gave us the legendary albums WHAT'S GOING ON, TROUBLE MAN, LET'S GET IT ON, MARVIN GAYE LIVE, I WANT YOU, HERE, MY DEAR, and IN OUR LIFETIME (which was Marvin's first entry into the '80s). You would fall in love with the different production of "What's Going On", without so much of the people talking and just the music, it also shows more of Marvin's vocal backings in its beautiful pitch. "God Is Love", even with its short time, is classic MOTOWN with a gospel-soul feel to it. You had a feeling R. Kelly was listening closely to this album while making Step In The Name of Love. "Sad Tomorrows" with its different feel of a bluesy and classical feel and with that soul is different from the album version (Flying High) from What's Going On and it's also breathtaking that you have to play it over and over. "The World Is Rated X" and "You're The Man" is the brotha's finest work as a political preacher as he sung about the social ills of the world and the political administration. And of course songs from the wonderful "Let's Get It On" album is produced brilliantly here. "Just to Keep U Satisfied" is classic doo-wop!

Then you get into the live recording of "Distant Lover" even while edited (for album purposes) and well it's still a masterpiece. "I Want You" and "After the Dance" are classics and of course "Got to Give It Up" is a blue-light in the basement party anthem that is still hot even after all these years. Finally Marvin's later work with "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are produced and helps brings a climatic ending to the entire 2-CD set.

From "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962 where he was in love with a girl but somehow stubborn to his or his woman's feelings to when he was looking for love in 1981's funky "Heavy Love Affair", it's particularly the Diary of Marvin Gaye. Nobody in soul music was like this cat and there will be nobody like him again no matter what you say! Marvin Gaye is forever the Original King of R&B! (TAKE THAT, WHITNEY, HA-HA!)

Marvin Gaye's 1970s recordings reflected his growing awareness of social issues--"What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)"--coupled with a freewheeling sexuality ("Let's Get It On," "Come Get to This," "I Want You"). On both counts, Gaye was out in front of the times, and helped shape the discussion during that turbulent time. This set does a good job of briefly limning the highlights of Gaye's '70s work; coupled with the 20th Century Masters companion volume of his '60s hits, it gives a fair if less than definitive overview of one of pop's most prolific and important hitmakers. --Daniel Durchholz

All the other 10 songs I've heard 100 times already but "My Last Chance", Marvin's obscure 1972 recording that was a posthomuous 1991 hit on the Billboard Hot R&B singles chart (peaking at #16), is enough to want to buy this compilation. The song alone garners four stars. It's Marvin Gaye, dammit. LOL

3 out of 5 stars There are better compilations for the money.......2001-11-08

The songs here all great examples of Marvin Gaye's later material. Unfortunately there are other single and double disc compilations that include more later material and some of his fantastic early recordings as well. For the money, buy a copy of the 2001 "Very Best of" double CD which contains the best of his Motown recordings as well as music released on Columbia in the later years. The songs here are great but will leave you wanting more (there's no "Sexual Healing"). Save a few bucks more and buy the "Very Best Of" new or used. You can build your collection from there.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction.......2000-06-09

if You Don't Have these Songs then this is a Great Introduction.Marvin Gaye is One Of The Greatest Artists Ever. His Material Speaks Of Genius. What's Going On,Mercy Mercy Me,Inner City Blues,Trouble Man,Distant Lover Live has So Much Soul&Feeling. His Work Says So Much.A Great Introduction too this Musical GIANT&LEGEND.VERY ESSENTIAL.

3 out of 5 stars Good Sampler, But It Makes Me Wanna Holla..........2000-04-13

...it has MPG's masterworks, "What's Goin' On", "Trouble Man", "Let's Get It On", "I Want You" and a treat in the Marvin & Diana cut "You're A Special Part of Me", but they were done in a compilation somewheres already and done better. Good for the 1st time Marv fan, but other than that stick to the Original albums produced by Motown and Columbia records.

          Amazon.com essential recording

An interesting grab bag of cuts from Marvin Gaye's 18-year career at Motown. His Latin-tinged first single ("Wherever I Lay My Hat," later covered by Paul Young), the smoldering "No Good Without You," and a cover of the Four Tops' "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" are among the highlights of the '60s sides cherry-picked here. And that his troubled later years produced their share of beauties is made clear by the sweet "Praise" and self-knowing "Ego Tripping Out." Hope and despair were felt more profoundly in Gaye's music than in that of most other singers, and this intriguing package doesn't let us forget that. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars Marvin Gaye -- Rare Selections.......2003-09-03

This CD was a surprise! I'd been looking for one particular song for years and found it on this CD. All of the songs sound good (of course, anything Marvin does sounds good!) I would recommend this CD to all Marvin Gaye fans.

          5 out of 5 stars More Marvin...........2000-05-13

Great album. This album is a collection of some of Marvin Gaye's lesser known song stretching from 1963-1981. There are a lot of gems on this one. The majority of the songs here are from Marvin's pre-What's Going On Days, Tracks 1-13. But unlike the more recent love starved heart the material is much better. Highlights among these tracks are, Wherever I lay my hat, No good without you, When i had your love, Loving you is sweeter than ever, it's a bitter pill to swallow, Seek and you shall find among others. The last five tracks are mostly post-Whats going on, all good but if you have any of Marvins albums you've heard them before. Not that the songs are bad. Of those the ones I'm really feeling are the overtly sexual You sure love to Ball and the conflicted Heavy love affair. The tracks that were real suprises are tracks 12 and 13. The temptations I wish it would rain is done wonderfully by Marvin, I suprised I hadn't heard his version sooner. And the touching Abraham, Martin and John is very special it's a lot like Marvin gaye's classic singing of the Star spangled banner at the NBA all star game in 1984. Overall a wonderful album full of great songs from one of musics most talented artists.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Disc.......2000-04-24

Marvin Gaye is One Of The Greatest Artists Ever. The Music&Words here hit home. His Voice is Timeless. The Music Here Just Gets Better with time.Marvin Gaye Captures Alot Of Styles&Vibes here very well.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasing collection of some of Marvin's lesser known hits........1999-03-04

Thank you Rhino for NOT coming out with another collection of the same ol' Marvin Gaye hits! (lets get it on, I heard it through the grapevine, pride and joy) This is a collection of some of Marvin's lesser known songs. (Seek and you shall find,it's a bitter pill to swallow, I wish it would rain) Many of these tracks are from his I heard it through the grapevine days and while no one track is a standout hit. All of the songs in this collection are very good. There are even a few late 70's early 80's tracks thrown in. Overall this is a good purchase for any true Marvin Gaye fans. (is there anyone that isn't) Pick it up and enjoy .
