For parents, listening to Dan Zanes provides not only instant Raffi relief, but also the warm sense of belonging to the right crowd. On each disc he trots out a posse of cool friends like Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, and Lou Reed and he delivers his openhearted lyrics with the rare roots-rocker's gift for stirring grace into grit. It would seem that the release of his fourth record, House Party would be ripe for a backlash--how long can the hokey conceit of a bunch of aging groovsters banging out kids' tunes in a Brooklyn basement hang onto its charm? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, because House Party rages on with the same winning, welcome-to-our-homespun-revolution vibe as its predecessors. Deborah Harry takes a twirl on "Waltzing Matilda," Bob Weir fires up the "Wabash Cannonball," and Angelique Kidjo bids "Jamaica Farewell," but the Zanes originals are this record's proving grounds, and they pin the tail on the donkey with bulls-eye precision. Contributions from returning regulars Barbara Brousal and Rankin' Don--the best couple of favors a party could hope for--send Zanes' campaign to become the guy who turned lampshade-wearing into a kindergarten fashion craze soaring. --Tammy La Gorce

I purchased this CD for my baby and she and I love it! She loves the tunes and the songs bring back memories from my childhood. I would highly recommend this CD. It's fun and will have you singing along.

My daughter loves this cd and it's grown on me too. She and I dance a lot to this. One favorite is the "Wabash Cannonball" and "Waltzing Matilda" with Debbie Harry is fantastic.
Dan's first album...Wiggle the Wiggles out of your CD Player.......2007-06-12
You may have seen Dan on various spots on Sesame Street, I first saw him in his yellow suit, singing Jump Up. This album continues the wonderful music that my daughter has turned my wife and my self on to. The beats are there, and the lyrics are very catchy.
So do yourself a favor, swap out Wiggles or Barney for Dan and his Friends, and enjoy kids music once again.

Mr. Zanes, you could not have come along at a better time! In a market where Teletubbies, Barney and the Wiggles seem to have the corner, this parent-friendly album is a welcome relief from all the fruit salad/I love you, you love me/lemondrops and gumdrops drivel that permeate my mushy stay-at-home mom brain!
When I was a single college gal, I remember listening to very hip, fun music. Then came pregnancy and babies. Then Baby Einstein music (which is good, but sounds like someone's ballerina jewelry box after awhile), Barney, Sesame Street and nursery rhyme CDs that took over my music collection. Ack!!! What happened to me? I decided it was time to search for something new for me and the kids to listen to.
After finding this CD and loving it, I just assumed that my one-year-old and four-year-old would not like DZ because it sounded too different from what they were used to. Boy, was I wrong! My older one thinks she is listening to "cool music" -- which she is! We especially like the "Wabash Cannonball" but every song on here is a hit with my kids. The guy is truly talented, and it's just great stuff. And it's fun to hear the celeb singers on a kid's album. Finally, we all have "cool music" to listen to!

I bought this CD since Dan Zane is on the Disney Channel. My daughter absolutely loves it! She asks to hear "House Party" all day every day. We dance and sing and it has brought a lot of fun into our house.

Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15
Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).
Best Brightman CD.......2007-02-07
A classical composition which showcases the beautiful voice of Sarah Brightman. A timeless CD which will continue to be a favourite over the years.
Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02
Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.
Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30
After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.
OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!
Nice Cover.......2006-12-27
I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).
As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.
In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

I heard wonderful things about this recording... but was a little disappointed. It is good, but nothing spectacular.
A promise about to be fulfilled.......2006-12-17
Not all of EMI's Debut seeries make it to the U.S., but since this one features an American singer, it did (as did the one featuring rising pianist Jonathan Biss). Nathan gunn is certainly well kn0wn now, after high-profile Met appearances in The Magic Flute and Harbison's An American Tragedy. The past few years have seen him mature, even though his voice will never be heroic. Gunn is very well suited to songs, although he makes a moving (and physically handsome) Billy Budd.
Her he sounds a little stiff, and he cannot carry off the numbers that re comic (Bolcom's Fur) or popular (Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?), but his straightforward masculinity works extremely well in Gene Scheer's Holding Each Other, he has enough poetry for Barber's Sure on This Shining Night, and just enough savoir faire for Rorem's Early One Morning. The voice itself isn't intrinsically beautiful, which may in the end mean that Gunn falls behind young counterparts like Gerald Finley and Simon Keenlyside, both of whom he resembles. Even so, this is a nice debut, and one can say that gunn's promise is being fulfilled.
Amazing collection - amazing voice........2006-02-22
Nathan Gunn has chosen a collection of mostly obscure songs and has applied his remarkable baritone voice to music not usually in the operatic repetoire. What results is a CD of depth, some humor, and extraordinary listenability. It's nice to see one of my favorite opera stars branch out. Bravo!
Amazing recordings.......2006-01-02
I first listened to this recording at the recommendation of a voice teacher and I am eternally grateful. I strongly recommend this album. Nathan Gunn is an extremely talented singer. As a singer myself (also a baritone like Nathan Gunn) I find much in his voice to model.
Nathan Gunn has an extremely beautiful voice, superb technique and execution, and has a very natural sound. There is an old steriotype of opera as sounding forced or artificial, but Nathan Gunn does a great job of avoiding this. He does a great job of communicating the "story" of the song to the listener, and I frequently found myself taken to the world of the song. Listening to many of his songs are like opening a good book and Nathan Gunn takes you there.

First Rate Singing!.......2005-12-20
I only recently discovered Mr. Gunn, but after hearing this recording, it makes me wonder why his name has eluded me for so long. Simply put, Nathan Gunn sings like a god! His voice is pure, and hypnotically beautiful to listen to. Turn on this CD and you will be wrapped in the most luxurious blanket of sound--his phrasing is impeccable, and his dynamics are wonderfully varied without being affected. His recording of Barber's "Nocturne" is haunting. "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" shows he isn't afraid of low notes, and the ending has some of the most spectacular high notes I've ever heard from a baritone. The Copland songs are also well done, as are the two John Jacob Niles selections. I wasn't familiar with Gene Scheer's songs prior to this CD, but they are all quite remarkable, though most especially "Lean Away" and "American Anthem." This is the best addition to my CD collection in a long time. I'm only saddened by the fact he doesn't have more recordings available. Mr. Gunn, I know you're busy with your opera schedule, but for those of us who can't make it to New York to see you in person, please record another CD!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Give Sting credit for craftily averting the downside of worldwide pop stardom: finding yourself at 50 playing decades-old hits at some dusty state fair. Sting is one talented Englishman!! This cd is awesome, it was recorded live in Italy on Sept 11, 2001. this is a must have in any music lovers collection.
Discovered After, Well... All This Time.......2006-07-08
I note that one of my fellow "citizen reviewers" below felt that this "live" CD--consisting as it does of live takes of previously recorded songs--was a bit on the superfluous side and would likely appeal only to the "casual fan." Funny thing though, several others have posted (ironically for similar reasons) that it should only be of interest to Sting COMPLETISTS, the folks who feel compelled to literally possess every recording the Stingle has ever made. So who's right? Neither? Both?
Well, that likely all depends on the beholder--or the "be-hearer." , but I can say that *I* like it a lot. But if anyone could be classified as definitive casual fan when it comes to Sting, I guess that'd be me. After a somewhat rocky start with "Roxanne" (HATED it the first few times I heard it on the radio), I soon came to appreciate the Police and was intrigued by their intelligent lyrics and tight reggae-influenced rock. That is to say, I liked what I heard but was never felt compelled to rush out and buy their latest album the day it was released. And yeah, it did seem that Sting's critics had a point. He did seem to be a little full of himself, and that put me off at least a little bit. Had the same complicated reaction to Bono a few years later. Talented, yes. Compelling, yes. Egotistical, yes...but then it's not totally unwarranted.
Years later, I have to ask myself why that was such a sticking point for me. Why did I always cut Lou Reed or John Lennon considerable slack in the pretentiousness department, but resisted doing the same for those who came a bit later. Who knows? What I do know now is that if I had given the Police and Sting's later solo works more of a chance, I almost certainly would have come to overlook (and maybe even embrace) the minor failings. There are, as it turns out, more than enough strengths to allow for that.
So anyway this "casual fan" was familiar with about half the tunes included in this concert album. I knew the Police tracks of course, and certainly remembered early solo stuff like "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free." Whatever my initial misgivings about "Roxanne" way back when, I did come to like that song well enough to be a bit disappointed in almost campy version included here. It's starts off well enough but soon devolves into a near lounge number. Sorry, but that tune just demands a SINCERE delivery. And the perfunctory take on "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is a bit disappointing too.
So maybe Sting is a little uncomfortable by some his efforts of his youthful period? Or perhaps just tired of them? He can, however, still wrap himself around the romantic sentiment of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and captures the still spooky irony of the CD's closer "Every Breath You Take" (still deliciously creepy after all these years). It's hard to believe that there are those who misunderstand this song's sinister import totally? I mean, do they really actually play it at WEDDINGS?? Listen to the words, boys and girls. This is NOT a healthy relationship.
Over the years, Sting has taken a few jabs for his rather overt, matinee idol romanticism. Well, you either like it or you don't. Give him credit though: he's smart enough to mix up the lush, metaphysical swoon of "A Thousand Years" with the comic swagger of "Perfect Love Gone Wrong." That makes for just about the perfect segue and just the right leavening touch. Similarly, he and the band shift effortlessly from those sunny "Fields of Gold" to sinister Anne Rice territory with "Moon Over Bourbon Street."
The brief notes on the inner sleeve make mention of the fact that the concert this live record documents took place in Italy on September 11, 2001. The album is "respectfully dedicated to those who lost their lives that day." I suspect many a jaded listener may have been a little skeptical about that. And there will certainly be those who would maintain that the proper response would have been to cancel the concert and the recording thereof (an evening concert European time would have been just hours after the day's actual events after all.) Regardless of how you may feel about all that, a genuine spirit of solemnity does indeed permeate many of the tracks. The album's opener "Fragile" is eerily poignant in light of the horror of that day. The song's vaguely wistful pacifist sentiment takes on new significance given the day's carnage. Five years--and considerably more carnage--later, it still bears listening to.
As does the whole album. Whether you're a "casual fan" or a devotee.

Why is Seven Days not on this CD. It was my favorite part of the DVD and then I find out its only on the Import CD. Still a great CD though.

Interesting, experimental, fantastic - so what's new?? If you didn't like this album, and did not appriciate the "changes" on the old Sting-classics, well yes - that may very well be because you're simply not fan enough, and you listen to these songs without having a particular interest in them, or feel a "relationship" to what Stings' songwriting and performing is all about; Developing, and growing with time. Change can be good, change can be nessecarry - and change is the future (he says something about this in an interview on his "Unplugged"-release from 1991 - where he also claims there should be no limitations in the progress of songwriting and performing by categories - all should mix together, and he claims music-"experts" who says you can't to be wrong. I agree, and here's another example of how superb category-mixing can be. It's jazzy, rockn' roll, heavy, relaxed (as in laid-back music) and most of all gripping. The versions of these songs were rehearsed weeks before the twin towers-tragedy - so this release has got nothing to do with that (some songs being slown down I mean) - if you find a sad "expression" here, well who wasn't emotionally involved on 11th Septhember, I know I was. If Sting and A&M has made big bucks on the tragedy of 2001, I am sure it was not the intention, or the consept behind the "All this time"-project.
Let me add, some versions here are even better, or as good as, the original - I really adore the makeover of "Don't stand..." and "If I ever..."!

I was honestly a bit put off by the cover art -- I imagined something like the Indigo Girls. In fact, this is bottom-heavy old-school rock and roll, with a slight country/blues twist, great powerhouse female lead vocals, great songwriting, great performances. It sounds really comfortable and familiar, but at the same time it's hard to think of an exact parallel -- if Lucinda Williams recorded a rock record, it might sound like this. Altogether a really captivating and satisfying rock album. This would have been a monstrous FM radio album back in the day. Into the Open, Brazen, Blue Day, and Valley of Debris are all awesome songs. Buy it.

Main brain Erika Wennerstrom performs open-heart surgery with a corroded six-string, blasting melodic knots of exuberance and experience. The low-fi grunge sound gets old after a while, though; how 'bout some separation between the instruments and, heavens, tweak the treble on the vocals? Choice cut: "All The Time" - Pretenders riff, Fiona Apple chords. Throughout the (short) set, Wennerstrom sings her guts out but never puts out, or grandstands. "Come A Long Way," the moody closer deserves a Cranberries'-sized budget.

Energy and Simple Sophistication.......2006-11-06
While I'm sure there is a long and rich history which the Heartless [...] draw on and into which they fit - I know none of it. What I do know is that this album is truly amazing.
There is a necessary simplicity to a band's music when it only contains three members, but the Heartless [...] manage to be both energetic and sophisticated; there's definitely more going on than you'll find after just a casual listen.
With only 10 tracks, there isn't a single bit of filler. Wennerstrom's vocals are really amazing too. I highly recommend giving these guys a listen.

It's tempting to go after Hanson with a full-on snark attack and deconstruct the new haircuts, snicker at the slightly rougher sound, and hoot at such impossibly tortured lyrics as "On the ground crying out, 'Somebody see me please.'" Trouble is, it's hard to trash them when the smile on your face has no trace of malice. That's the sort of smile these songs induce. The mildly spicy, funked-up "You Never Know" has a "Smooth" feel (only it's Jonny Lang, not Carlos Santana, supplying the licks). Hyper-happy harmonica (courtesy of Blues Traveler's John Popper) and thwacky-wacky effects on "If Only" turn yearning into a disease you'd stand in line to catch. "Save Me" is a sweet plea; the title track (and first single) has Southern-rock/gospel textures; "In the City," despite its adultery theme, is like Disneyland Manhattan--more fun than dangerous. Throughout, Taylor Hanson's vocals prove pretty expressive and throaty for an adolescent could-be male supermodel. Yes, teen girls will be penning pining letters to boyfriends at far-flung camps all summer to this stuff. But the Tulsa trio's real triumph is the way they bridge not just the generation gap, but the cynical chasm with clean, perfectly sappy pop. --Nina Malkin

Definately a definitive CD by Hanson. A more grown up CD. Like making their mark on the music world. And my favorite is of course the title track "This Time Around".

This is one of Hanson's best and strongest albums. Now sure, I've bought every other one of Hanson's albums but I do mean it, with every strand of me, when I say this is without a doubt one of my faves from them! The songs, each, have their own personality and charisma. I can't help but fall madly in love with If Only every time I hear it; a song like this just CRIES to be sung along to! And woah, what a sorrowfully sweet song it is! (If you couldn't tell, this is my #1 fave song!! lol) Runaway Run...gosh! Impeccable lyrics, a tune that draws you in, and instrumentation and performers that could only get better with age. Who can resist? Another one that I can't help but get caught up in is Sure About It. It is just but one of the songs on here that gets me vamped up and ready to tap my feet in rythm to it's irresistible beat. Rock driven and edgy at it's best, In The City gives off taunting and seductive vibes. Maybe even a bit of a "Hell, if I care!" flare! In a lugubrious mood? This Time Around has songs that are great for a listen when you're in a slump! I can't say enough good things about this album; I honestly have neither qualms regarding my decision to purchase it nor do I have any dislikes about any one song on it. Never has any one band brought me as much pleasure as Hanson! Love pop? Well, what are you waiting for? Put this in your player and get ready because Hanson delivers much more than just pop! The sound is closer to rock with this album. TEN STARS!!!

This is by far Hanson's best album. It didn't get great sales, because of the music company that produced it, but it still has great quality despite its poor marketing. All of the songs...I'm serious, every-single-one will have you hooked. This is a great cd to play at a party or when you are alone. It's so versatile. Buy it.

This cd is exactly what it is; catchy fun. The songs just keep playing over and over in your head and they are an absolute delight. There is no hidden agenda, no deeper meaning to the lyrics. The instrumentation is infectious. I would like to emphasize certain songs but I will resist because all the songs are very worth your while. Just slide "This Time Around" into your cd player, let loose and let go!
This Album Proves That Hanson Are Talented Musicians..........2005-12-01
"This Time Around" is a perfect album...there's really no weak song on the entire disc. The best track on the album is, hands down, "Runaway Run"-it should have been the first single. "If Only" is great, as well, even if you are not a Hanson fan you will find this song entertaining. "Sure About It", "Wish That I Was There", "This Time Around", "Can't Stop", "Love Song"-these are just some of the tracks-and they are all great. Regardless of what people may say about Hanson, they truly are real musicians & excellent song writers and because of this they will still be around 25 yrs from now, while other "popular" acts today most likely won't.

Cover art, front: a behatted (of course) Dwight, face completely hidden. It sits alongside a couple of rockers, a handful of inspired weepers, and two inexorably flowing country-pop numbers ("A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" and "Ain't That Lonely Yet") that deserved every second of airplay they got. This is my favorite CD of Dwight's. I love every song on this CD. My favorite song on this CD is A Thousand Miles From Nowhere. This is country music at its best. I love the video also because it has trains in an old train yard and I love trains. Fast As You is also a good song. I love the beat of the song and it is a good song to country line dance to. Ain't that Lonely Yet is also a very good song with a relaxing melody. This Time is a very good song and it is pure country music at its best. It reminds me of Buck Owens singing in the 60's. My least favorite song on the CD is Pocket Of A Clown. All in all this CD is the finest work Dwight has ever done.

Dwight Yoakam has a good ear for what`s quality country, inspired from the "bakersfield school" of great country star`s like Buck Owens,etc. This CD are Yoakam in more or less topform, except for a few letdowns, this CD shines. Track 1 Pocket of a Clown is a good opener, played in a relaxable speed, this one delivers. Yoakam`s voice has a brightness and certain coolnees , which give him a certain sting all trough. But, hey. The best Track on the CD Track 2 Thousand miles from nowhere, is a minor masterpiece when it come`s to "hitsong writing". From the beginning to the end it has flaire and style, marked all over. The windy guitar and Yoakam`s voice delivers something what we can called "outer space "music. The song kicks you off the ground, and you nearly belive you can fly trough room and space when you listen to it. Track 3 Home for sale is an ok slow country song, which doesn`t have a build up to a climax, but are anyway relaxable to listen to. Track 4 This Time, is classical "walkalong" country from the Bakersfield school of music, and Yoakam`s voice has that "Buck Owens" scwung all over.Track 5 Two doors down has much of the same mood all trough, but doesn`t really kicks in gear. Track 6 Ain`t that lonley yet, has much of the same quality as Track 2. That sometimes "undescribable" airy outer space feel, that fill joy into your`e mind and soul, that also Yoakam sings in the song: you hungry for some more.
Track 7 King of Fools are more or less traditional country, but have some weak spots in between. Track 8 Fast as you can, is somekind of an inconsistency style rocken roller, which has some high or lowpoints all trough. Track 9 Try not
to look so pretty are fine and put`s you in a "quiet is the new loud" mood. Track 10 Wild Ride, is a blues rocker, which sounds like "Rolling Stones" on a bad day. With this the 5 stars are gone.Sorry to say. Track 11. Lonesome Day is a letdown too. But hey there. Hi Ho Silver. This is anyway quality country, man !
One of the best.......2005-09-15
Outstanding album; one of the best ever released by any artist. I'd say this is one of the top 3 in Dwight's catalog of releases. There really are no words to describe the sound and mood found on these tracks, but this is definately "it". There seems to be a wide-open, vast, lonely feeling throughout this album, and whether the setting of the song begins in the desert or on a bar stool, you cannot help but feel damn near every word of the songs. I have always felt (and probably always will) that Dwight has no peers; but the mixing and outstanding engineering of the sound found here, deserves special mention. Well worth your money.
One of Dwight's Greatest Albums.......2005-05-23
Dwight Yoakam has a voice and style that are drenched with his own unique originality. As far as his music goes, I'm convinced the man can do no wrong. When "This Time" was released back in 1993, Dwight was at the height of his commercial success... and he was able to achieve that success without any loss of identity or originality. Every track is a winner and the songwriting and overall quality of this album is superb.
This CD yielded three of the biggest hits of Yoakam's career: the heartbreaking "Ain't That Lonely Yet", the ethereal "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere", and the downright rockin' "Fast as You." As great as these songs are, there are other tracks found on this album that are just as good (if not better.) Other favorites here include "Home for Sale" & "Two Doors Down", two slow songs that are sure to break your heart with the delicacy of Dwight's vocals and the well-written lyrics. Also worth mentioning are "Pocket of a Clown", a bouncy psychobilly tune with great background vocals, "Lonesome Roads", which showcases some of the most self-depreciating lyrics Yoakam ever penned, and the title track "This Time", which adds a nice Bakersfield touch to the album.
With all that's great on "This Time", one might expect to find an inevitable weak point where it falters below expectations. However, I can say with total confidence that not even the most picky of critics can find a fault here. The songwriting, the vocals, and the arrangements are all amazing and have a great deal of variety among them. This album just proves that Mr. Yoakam always radiates his impeccable genius, regardless of Nashville's trends and tastes.
This Time.......2005-05-18
In my opinion, this was easily the best country album of 1993, and probably one of the best ever. Still sounds good, too.

I absolutely adore Kurt Elling, but oh my goodness.....he sure is pitchy on some of these songs. It's actually painful for me to listen to "A Time For Love" and "She's Funny That Way." He is sharp about every 5th word. Is this live? Couldn't they fix it in the mix?
Then I come upon "Too Young To Go Steady" and it's the best version I have ever heard. Almost all on pitch.
Mind you folks, I have bought EVERY one of Elling's CDs, this being my latest purchase. He is my current absolute favorite male singer. He knocked Mark Murphy right out of the ball park for me.
From listening to his whole repertoire I think he's improved tremendously in the past 11 years.
On his new CD - Night Moves - he's almost perfectly on pitch on every song.
Back to this CD - On My Foolish Heart - off key again.
But when he did recorded it again for "Live In Chicago" it is brilliant and perfection. Plus it's a 12 minute version. "Apart" as in "fade and fall apart" is the only sharp note I found.
I still wouldn't give up my copy of "This Time It's Love" for anything.

If you don't own this album - you need to. The musicianship is on par with the jazz masters - this is bound to become a historic album. Kurt Elling is the new jazz legend we have been looking for and his musical legacy will live on just like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. The proof is in the listening - buy this album!

Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood are in some ways like Hal David and Burt Bachrach with a few exceptions: Kurt sings infinitely better than either Hal or Burt and Laurence plays and arranges better than Burt. But boy, do they collaborate beautifully! The best song on the album: maybe "Foolish Heart". With Raynor, Onderdonk, Brad Wheeler, Eddie Johnson and Johnny Frigo,(Kids: he's 87 but sounds like 27!)folks should buy this for the great Chicago jazz musicians who have helped in advancing Kurt's great career. Really a great album but not Kurt's best effort(MITA) is the finest vocalist albulm of 2003, YES it is!

Kurt Elling is genius. He has a very classy but innovative style that will give you no choice but to play this album over and over. His originals are stunning and his versions of the jazz standards he has selected for this collection are creative without being over the top. I have owned this CD for two years now and it is still in high rotation in my collection. No matter what mood you're in, this album will suit it.
The Best Young Male Jazz Singer? Ex. "A" is Here.......2004-01-25
Many believe that Kurt Elling is the best male jazz singer under the age of 40 in the business. For those who would so argue, this album should be "Exhibit A" in support of their argument. Listen to how he wails on "Effendi"--he really shows his chops here. Elling is best known for his ability to improvise and bend lyrics as well as melody, and the third and fourth cuts on the album ("Smoochie" and "Jen's Yen") highlight that. Being the old "romantic softy" at heart that I am, though, my favorite on this set is the "harmonized dub" of "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancin'." One quibble: Kurt Elling sings his r's (like "moth-errrrrrrrrr") so hard that it's jarring. It's like the intentionally dissonant notes that Monk used to throw into his solos. But that's really a quibble. Highly recommended.
