This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

In 1999 the Donnas reached the age where they could Get Skintight. Then the racy foursome went on to Turn 21 in 2001. And for 2002, theirs is either an invitation or an offer to Spend the Night. And it'll be a whopper of a night. "It's on the Rocks" opens the evening on an anthemic note. The stoner paean "Pass It Around" appears just past midpoint, and "5 O'Clock in the Morning" closes the event. What's in between? Straight-ahead drumbeats, snarling guitars, and sassy vocals are the band's calling cards, and they're all very much in evidence here. Songs like "Take It Off" and "Please Don't Tease" are built upon bouncing melodies that are revved by choppy pop-punk guitar and simple rhymes ("tease" and "knees," for example). The Donnas' party--"Take Me to the Backseat" included--doesn't rage so much as it embraces a kind of postpunk free love that swaggers like the Ramones circa "Rockaway Beach." --Andrew Bartlett

I bought a couple of The Donnas CDs and I deeply regret it. The musicianship is incredibly poor and the vocals are the same on each song and on each CD: monotone. It's almost like the singer is reading the lyrics. I guess I'm spoiled, having been exposed to women with true vocal ability; women that front bands like Elis, Dreamside, The Cranberries, Concrete Blonde. As a female singer/musician myself it is painful to listen to this band. I hoped their musicianship and vocal stamina/range would improve or evolve from one CD to the next but sadly I was disappointed. Their music is devoid of riffs and hooks. Even for "punk" the delivery is high school level at best. If you want good punk or alt, buy Hole's CDs. (Courtney can at least play and sing.)

It makes me sad because with a little effort, The Donnas could probably evolve into a great all girl band. IF THEY WANTED TO. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

"Spend the Night" is one of the best, most [...]-kicking rock 'n' roll albums I've heard in years. No, it's not the most original platter, and yes, there is some similarity between the songs (the production, general mood and tempo don't vary a lot).

But the songs are extremely well-crafted, the guitar sound is among the best I've heard, and vocalist Donna A (Brett Anderson) has a great, everywoman voice and a plainspoken in-your-face way with words that's just impossible to resist. I wanna pump my fist in the air and sing along with every song, and there ain't many albums that make me do that.

Listen, I'm 44 years old, I remember when there were tons of albums that sounded like this -- "life's a party, get a buzz on, get laid" -- what the heck happened? Don't you young people still enjoy this sort of thing? Geez, I still do.

The Donnas have got to be major fans of Kiss, AC/DC and Judas Priest, and I am not complaining. Those bands knew how to write riffs that stuck, moved, slithered, slunk, rebounded and wrapped around, always at the right time. They had vocalists who understood how to put together a catchy vocal melody that complemented the rhythm guitar track. They had producers who knew how to make the whole mess sound big and thick.

Well, the Donnas have all that stuff, too. And while it's not fair to pigeonhole them as simply an "all-girl rock band," I will go ahead do it and say they are the best "all-girl rock band" I've ever heard. And the best songs on this album -- including "Take It Off," "You Wanna Get Me High," "I Don't Care (So There)," "Pass It Around"," "Too Bad About Your Girl" and "Not the One" are worthy of the band's (apparent) heroes.

There is nothing to say about this cd except it kicks ass from start to finish. "On The Rocks" is the ideal song to kick off this cd followed by other rockers "Take it off" and "All messed up" The music is straight forward kick ass rock and roll. Yes it is a formula that has been done before but it works and it works well. It is sad that so many bands have strayed away from this Formula that has made bands like Kiss, Cheap Trick, Ted Nugent and The Rolling Stones such classics, and you'll hear all the influences. This cd does not sound like the Donnas previous cd or the one that follows, and sadly The Donnas may go down as a flash in the pan, however any true rock and roll fan should not be with out this cd. Like the song says "Five O:clock in the morning" and you'll listen to it untill then. In an age of war, corruption, and other depressing things the music industry is singing about, it's good to hear fun partying songs with a "Take Me in the Back Seat" message.

A lot of criticism of the donnas centres around "they always sound the same" and "silly lyrics" "all about sex" but, you know, maybe that's what makes them so great. If you have a formula for success why change it? This album is a classic. All the songs have great rifs, tunes, great production, consistently good lyrics, and pure energy from start to finish. Why haven't this band been a huge success in Britain? Only a matter of time, and proper marketing I'm sure. Give us more of the same please girls!

I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

this Isley Brother Album was alright but reflected the Sound&Vibe of the times.this Album doesn't match there 70's work or "Mission to Please".Ronald Isley got His Groove back as Mr.Biggs&thank goodness because while He sounded really well on this Set alot of the material here had the Isley's headed toward a fast dive.the title track&Ronald Isley's vocals save this Album.

"Spend The Night" is hardly a good album when compared to the stellar work the Isleys did in the 1970s. It is however a reasonably decent (if a bit trite) attepmt at the kind of elegant sould-R&B music the group usaed to make before the Isley-Jasper-Isley split in '84. Angela Winbush's production tends to be a bit sparse and synth-heavy, but the total effect is classy, if a bit dated nowdays. Lyrics are a sore spot, especially on the second half of the album. Overall, unless you really love the stellar title track, or the equally good "You'll Never Walk Alone," you would be better served to buy the Isleys earlier work, an Angela Winbush album (where the same themes are repeated and done much better), or the mid '90s smash "Mission to Please," which marks the real returm of guitar virtuoso Ernie Isley to the mix.

The Texas-based trio Reverend Horton Heat has been in dire need of a solid album, and, luckily, Spend a Night in the Box is it. The middling material that overruled the lukewarm albums It's Martini Time and Space Heater has been scrapped in favor of strictly swinging material, buoyant rockabilly, and a handful of good ol' fashioned stomp. The fun kicks in from the get-go with frontman "Reverend" Jim Heath lost inside of a paranoid Cool Hand Luke fantasy; it sounds like sweat and tastes like bourbon. Speaking of bourbon, "Sue Jack Daniels" dives headfirst into the trio's notorious psychobilly sound, upping the tempo and feedback until the whole thing boils over. Other standout cuts include the thumping "It Hurts Your Daddy Bad" and the trucker fantasy "Sleeper Coach Driver." Spend a Night in the Box, produced by Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers, is reverently retro and proudly rock & roll. --Jason Josephes

this is one of the best albums the rev has put out. its different from most of his albums style wise but the songs are all quality. i always find a few songs on their albums get old and i skip over them but this one is good from start to finish.

Its kind of hard to get a bad album from the Rev. Like their alter-ego The Cramps, each album they make is a winner. Spend a Night In The Box is a fine example. while it isnt as hard hitting as Liquer In The Front or Even Full Custom Gospel Sounds, the material is top notch. This one is the most swingin' out of all the Revs material. Definitley a 50's swing influence, totally retro! But still hip to todays standard. If you like ANY of the Reverend's material then I suggest you get this one as well. I will say tread lightly on the next two, Lucky 7 and Revival b/c they dont seem to stand out as much as all the other ones. Great driving music and I'm sure great dancing music as well. Always catchy, always good. The Reverend Horton Heat is the way to go! BTW, get ALL of The Cramp's album and you have all the best that rockabilly has to offer.

This is perhaps the Reverend's greatest album. It is always a bold statement to place one recording from such a great band at the top. However, the more I listen to this one, the more I think it is. This is a bit of a departure from some of the Rev's harder rocking stuff. Much more rockabilly. And I will admit, that there is no one defining song, like you generally have with other Rev albums. However, that is what is so good about this album, every single song is so good, it is hard to pick a favorite. if you want hard Rev, buy "Lucky Seven," if you want good ol' rockabilly, spend a night in the box!

This album puts the 'rock' back into rockabilly. Its got those twangy, slide-inflected guitars that scald like a poke of homemade hootch. The album has a warm, live sound with just the right amount of echo. The Reverend really hits his stride in Spend a Night in the Box. Spend a Night in the Box marks the group's return to its classic, amped-up, rockabilly style....one helluva shot of redemptive moonshine. Get on the dancefloor, cats and kittens, and give the man an 'Amen'.

You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.

"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.

Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.

In my 700+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.

I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.

It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.

I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.

Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.

My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.

It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

    I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.

    The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
    You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!

      I was a Claudine fan in the days of vinyl. If you liked her in the 70's, I think you'll like this album better still. "Peace Will Come" is excellent, as is "Electric Moon," "Wake Up to Me," and "Remember the Good." These could have been chart songs, could have given her a reputation as a serious interpreter of very interesting unusual songs, that none of her 60's - 70's songs ever could have done. They aren't just pretty, breathy songs in the Claudine style - they are great writing presented in a way that really brings out what the song writer must have had in mind - and, they are songs that you probably haven't heard elsewhere. Of course, a number of her covers on this CD are forgettable. But get the CD (because iTunes has never heard of her) and copy off the best songs.
