The pinnacle of his jazz-rock work of the early '70s, One Size Fits All boasts some of the most memorable songs of Frank Zappa's career performed by one of the most beloved Mothers of Invention lineups ever assembled. This cast of musicians' musicians--including George Duke, Ruth Underwood, and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson--blasts through the groovy sci-fi world of Inca Roads, the hyper-charged blues rock of "Pajama People," the lounge majesty of "Sofa" and concert mainstays like "San Ber'dino" and "Florentine Pogan." Customer Reviews:
All these 5-star reviews must mean something..........2007-07-30
Every lineup FZ hired was par excellence, and this is no exception. What makes this a standout, is it is probably the smoothest-sounding record he ever made, especially under the name of "The Mothers." The Mothers' music was often crude, tasteless, even harsh-sounding. And even though the personnel changed constantly, the name "Mothers" meant usually a raspberry in the direction of every current convention. The divisive humor is still present on "One Size..." but there is an elegance in this particular record that is rare, even for the Zappa catalogue. "Inca Roads," the opener, is a song about unidentified flying objects, and this sets the mood, because most of this music is not of this world. It is a typical project for the bands Zappa has led, a pretty simple vamp with some odd punctuation, a stunning guitar solo, and some incredibly difficult instrumentation for good measure. "Can't Afford No Shoes" is a straight-foreward rocker, leading into possibly the most elegant melody in Zappa's body of work, the instrumental "Sofa." This number dates back to the "Flo & Eddie" period, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan sing in phonetic German, just like on One Size's closer, "Sofa #2." "Po-Jama People" exploits the voice change Zappa experienced after damaging his larynx in his fall from the stage when that psycho attacked him at the Rainbow Theater in 1971. Banged him up pretty good, but his voice went considerably deeper afterwards, and probably sounds better than he would've otherwise. And of course, the lengthy, fuzz-tone guitar solo, obligatory at this point, is the centerpiece of the song. "Florentine Pogen" is probably the most structurally complex number on this disc. It seems every verse has a different melody and time signature. Most songs have a bridge, but this has several. A difficult number to perform. "Evelyn, A Modified Dog" is a silly number, Frank singing to George Duke's piano, very similar to "Leather's" version of "A Little Green Rosetta." Conceptual Continuity. All his recordings dovetail, it seems.
"San Ber'dino," even though it sounds upbeat, is about Zappa's ten days in jail in 1965. He was facing up to twenty years, on a trumped-up obcenity charge, where a vice detective named Willis set him up in a sting operation. They didn't like the fact that he was living in Studio Z with Jim Sherwood, the buxom Lorraine Belcher, and another white woman who had a black baby, who used to play in the dirt outside. The "seedy" atmosphere of the place, with its psychedelic decorations and freaky people who frequented the place, just didn't jibe with the white-bread "Leave It To Beaver" community. They hired Studio Z to make a racy tape for a supposed bachelor party, and arrested Zappa and Belcher when the tape was handed over. The judge thought the tape was funny, which angered the prosecution, but he was given two years probation and a suspended sentence. This would explain the overt sexual content in much of his work, rubbing the authority's nose in his right to artistic expression. Imagine how he must have felt at the time: "...land of the free? HAH!"
"Andy" is up there with "Sofa," in its elegance and beauty. The bluesy beginning belies the atmosphere of the rest of it. It has an incredible beauty to it. Of course, this is subjective, someone else may disagree about it's merit, but judge for yourself. I'll leave it at that.
And, of course, this all closes with "Sofa#2." Originally part of a bigger, more elaborate piece, fragments of which appear in "Playground Psychotics" and Volume One of the "You Can't Do That..." series from the Flo & Eddie days, as stated earlier. This is the polished version. Even if you can't understand a word of it, it will speak to you.
This is a very elegant, sophisticated piece of music, and the only people I imagine not liking it, would be the ones who catagorically dismiss it, all over the Zappa name. There would be no pleasing them anyway.
This is an incredible piece of music.
Zappa still has not been outplayed!.......2007-04-22
If you are one of those people who say they dont like Zappa buy this CD. The guitar solo's on Inca Roads and Po-Jama People are enough to convert anyone with the slightest bit of taste into a Zappa fan. The music is great on this album from start to finish.
Zappa's best album of the 70's.......2007-02-25
This album is the culmination of Zappa's work of the 70's. Its predecessors: "Over-Nite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" were fabulous, but had not matured to the degree of excellence as this album did. Zappa assembled a group of veteran musicians. The refined and consumed madness of its jazz-rock sound makes this album a monumental treasure. "Inca Roads" transports us in Zappa's Jazz oriented mind where the lyrics and the drum-beats share the same tight-rope, then its guitar solo confirmed that once again Zappa was not only a superb musician, but he was also full of surprises and charms. The four songs: "Po-Jama People," "Florentine Pogen," "San Ber'dino," and "Andy" prove how Zappa was such a sarcastic and iconoclastic son-of-a-gun. Johnny "Guitar" Watson's vocal contribution in two songs makes this album even more special. In closing, "One Size Fits All" may also be described as Zappa's signature: "Music is the Best."
One Size Does Fit All..........2007-01-12
If you are into Zappa's mid-seventies, George Duke-influenced, funk...then look no further. This is by far Zappa's funkiest entry, and if you get a chance to buy Bongo Fury which was recorded live at about this time, the two complement each other perfectly. Andy, in my opinion an underrated song, is classic and unrivaled on this album. Sofa's 1 and 2 are both interesting pieces; San Ber'doo, for Californians especially, will make you laugh; Florentine Pogen is exceptional. If you do not like his 'poppy' stuff of this time period, you might give this one a try because it is still solid, and in my opinion, better than Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe.

Good Stuff.......2004-05-07
I have liked most albums from this group. This is another keeper. It is a good combination of vocals and simple but creative music. The production is very good. Overall a very good CD.
The Nylon's Finest Hour.......2002-04-28
I discovered the Nylons via this 1980's release over 15 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Both on stage and in these wonderful accappella tracks, the group lifts the listener to new heights, and in the process literally reinvents some of the classic songs we all know and love. The standout here is "Up the Ladder to the Roof" - originally a song from The Supremes - but given a new percolating lease on life in this superb arrangement, which shines unlike any other Supremes cover recorded before or since. Other strong cuts include "Please" "That Kind of Man" and "Prince of Darkness." Whether singing soft easy listening numbers or rocking gems, the Nylons will capture your audio heart in this shining album, which I consider one of the best vocal collections of the past 20 years. A superb addition to any music lover's library!
Great voices, engaging songs.......2002-02-28
Very nice! I enjoyed all the songs on this album...which is uncommon as I usually find an album has about half the songs as "place holders". Unlike their album titles "The Nylons", the voices were in harmony, even in difficult passages they were on-key, the instruments were not over-powering...a great album. I will definitely try out more albums by The Nylons!
Their best.......2000-11-13
It's for sure their best, catchy songs, fine arrangements and beautiful singing. One star off because Bumble Boogie is missing. I'm glad I still have original LP.
Pop harmonies at their best!.......2000-08-16
One Size Fits All is a wonderful a cappella pop album that is aptly named because it is so widely appealing. This album is well known in high end audio circles for its natural vocals and superb recording. I bought my copy after seeing it in many audio stores during my college days.
This is one of my favorite CDs, not only because it impresses on my high end audio system, but the songs are downright infectious. Don't be surprised to find yourself humming and snapping your fingers even after the music stops playing.
Highly recommended!

Good Things Don't Last Was My JAM!.......2007-01-20
Why did all of my good cds walk? UNV...Small Change...Men at Large...I wore this cd out...especially "Good Things Don't Last" (ain't that the doggone truth).
Dont let the name fool you. These bro's can sing!.......2005-07-09
The Cleveland Oh based Men at Large, a group discovered by Gerald Levert, came with their sophomore album in 1994 and it was bumping right away. I just pulled this cd out of "archives" and it took me back to that spot 10 years ago when I running the streets and doing my thing before I literally settled down!
My favorite songs on this cd are: Holiday, where the guys talk about everyday of the year being similiar to a holiday.."its a holiday, its your special day..its not Christmas, Thanksgiving or Valentines...
Good things dont last
Dont Cry, featuring Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat
Feet Wet..I dont wanna fall in love, I just wanna get my feet wet...let me hit it, let me get it!!!
First Day...ever since the first day I met ya, I wanted to hit it..(I wanted to hit it) but you wasnt it with...I promised it that I'll keep it on the d-low
I wanna roll, which is a smooth mellow song with a good background beat for slow dancing or two stepping
Funny Feeling
and of course, Will you marry me, which is a classic, classic song....
this is a very good CD..I would say 10 of the 12 songs could have been radio hits....wonder what happened to these brothers.
GREAT CD!.......2004-02-03
I JUST LOVE THIS CD. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS CD FOR THE FOURTH
TIME,@ AMAZON.COM. THIS CD HAS SOME GREAT SONGS ON IT! MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE "WILL YOU MARRY ME","LET'S TALK ABOUT IT" AND
"HOLIDAY". SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!
Fantastic........2002-06-03
This was a great album. I wonder why I am the first person to rate this. I know plenty of people have heard about Men at Large. The whole cd is excellent. If it is still avaiable in stores, please get it! The brothers can sing. My favorites songs are "I Wanna Roll, Funny Feeling, First Day, Better Off By Myself. This cd is HARD! One Love.

Ole = Hard Rock!!.......2005-12-17
Evenrude - One Size Fits All was originally released on the Mercury label back in 1989. MTM has just re-released it through their Classix series. Ole Evenrude is an accomplished guitarist as well as singer. Ole has worked with Dag Finn, Sha-Boom, Swedish Erotica and Return. He always puts alot of money into production for his CD's and he likes big choruses. At times he sounds like Alice Cooper from the Hey Stoopid album. Most of the songs are very catchy & he always has great guitar licks and solos. If you are a fan of Alice Cooper, Swedish Erotica, Dalton , Treat or Shy you will probably like this CD.

more pink cream!!!.......2007-07-10
This is a superb cd,full of great hooks and guitars. This is their best.
songs like "livin my life for you","talk to the moon","do you like it like
that",will have you wanting more. All the other songs are great as well.If
you can find this for a reasonable price, you've got to get it.Or if your
thinking -should you gamble $50.00?-you should, compared to the likes of
sargant fury cd's at the same price, this is way better !!even though
sargant's is pretty good.
Pink Cream 69 one size fits all.......2005-11-24
I think this cd is definitely a classic. the music and vocals are excellent. If your looking for good rock-n-roll you will love this band and this cd.
The Best unknown band I've ever heard.......2004-03-26
Pink Cream 69 is one band the USA totally missed out on. I don't know if it was the name or they didn't try for US ditribution back then, but if this cd had been released here when it came out in 1991 it should have done very well. Metal wasn't dead, yet and they certainly had the looks and playing to keep up with bands of the time like Slaughter and Firehouse. This cd was my introduction to PC69 and from the first chorus of "Living My Life for You" I was hooked. Since then I have gotten all of their cd's and this is definitely the best with the old singer Andi Derris (now with Helloween).
classic hard rock.......2004-02-10
Probably their best album. You won't regret bying and the Andi Deris are at his peak!
The best pc69 album.......2002-02-09
The best pc 69 album. Very melodic and you will enjoy all of the songs equally. "Do you like it like that?" is one of the best rock songs I have ever heard. The guitar playing is amazing and the lyrics are smart.
