The Roots aren't the only hip-hop group to build their sound around live instrumentation. Yet this Upstate New York quartet doesn't sound much like Philly's finest. Further, As Cruel as School Children is more radio-ready than previous efforts, especially "Cupid's Chokehold," which appropriates Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" to fine effect, i.e. "Take a look at my girlfriend / She's the only one I got." (A different mix appears on The Papercut Chronicles.) Not many indie-pop artists can freestyle, though, as frontman Travis McCoy proves on "Sloppy Love Jingle, Pts. 1-3," a trio of a cappella raps. Aside from dividing these tracks into "periods," "study halls," and the like, in fitting with the high school theme, McCoy's narratives touch on teachers, cheerleaders, and lunch room chatter. Guests include William Beckett (The Academy Is...) on "7 Weeks" and Speech (Arrested Development) on "Biter's Block." Cruel as School Children was co-produced by Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) and released by band mate Pete Wentz's Decaydance imprint. I hadn't really heard much of Gym Class Heroes when I bought this CD. I saw/heard Cupid's Chokehold on Fuse once and that was about it. I bought it based on Amazon's recommendation system. I'm a big fan of hip-hop like Jurassic 5 & A Tribe Called Quest and I have to say, based on my preferences, this CD was excellent. I don't think I've taken this CD out of my car's CD player since I bought it a month ago. It's just really darn good.

Good radio rap never hurt anyone???.......2007-06-22

Trading on their live status and their need to bring back the fun element of hip-hop which has indefinately been missing, this is like being stuck in a wacky-coloured room with four hyperactive but unimaginative goons desperate for you to like them. "Hey cheer up! It might never happen! Watch me bust a move," were the last words they uttered as I clubbed them unconscious with Public Enemy albums...but hey I really like Public Enemy for the record..

Smoothed out and mellow is the modus operandi of this four man crew from Geneva, New York. For those who are seeking a hip hop revival like Common's "Be" last year or the wonderful delight that helped pioneered MF Doom's to greater heights (I'm talking 2004's brilliant Madvillain - Madvillainy) you might want to look elsewhere. Friends this is hip hop for the Hollister/Abercrombie/Lacoste crowd.

To put it into a pop cultural perspective, this is the type of rap you'd expect to catch Dawson or one of the Gilmore Girls listening to, or if we still even cared about him, Seth from the OC. You'd never hear it bumping out of the trunk of any of the thugs on The Shield, that's for sure.

But before you get this impression that I am totally dismissing this album, let me preface back and say that I actually very much so like this work. The Queen And I tells of a drunk girlfriend who's 'only one more swallow from being oh so hollow' (and you're complaining?) over an acoustic strum and a 'hey-hey' chorus. Shoot Down The Stars contrasts a grim verse with a positive chorus of sunshine harmonies.

Their one track which could be redeeming, the of-its-moment track New Friend Request, plays on the desperate need to be liked on the MySpace website, is actually quite clever even if the pieces are a bit taken from Jurassic 5. I mean really the lyrics can appeal to anyone who has used Myspace - 'I didn't take it personal when you ignored my request to be your friend. I spilled my guts and hit send; I waited two weeks for a response and got nothing. Honestly, it only made me want you more.'

Particularly nasty are covers of Jermaine Jackson's We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (To Have a Good Time) which ticks a smug '80s referencing box with no tongue in no cheek.

Talking of musical cross-pollination, Gym Class Heroes may apparently be able to 'put the f u back into fun' but on this evidence they could put something into country music (without the r). Putting the fun back into hip-hop isn't too challenging, but their need to show the breadth of their musical styles when they can't even master one isn't ambition, its truly arrested development.

As Cruel as School Children is a great feel good summer album but with quirky tunes and tongue-in-cheek raps which possibly border a little too much on pop culture, I can't see it surviving much past this year when the scene and pop culture take a new shape in 2008. Still regardless I have to say again I think it's a really fun RAP album to listen to care free, and really in a genre bending so much over hos, bling and pimpin' rides it's a nice diversion from the norm.

What's the big deal about these guys anyway?.......2007-05-06

Gym Class Heroes are an alternative hip-hop band that I discovered on MTV Hits last year when their video "The Queen and I" was playing. I didn't really know what to make of that song, but I still decided to check out the band's latest album, As Cruel As School Children.

I really don't see what all the hype is about these guys. I'm not saying they don't have talent, because the production is definitely on point, and leader Travis McCoy does have a nice flow. It's what he SAYS that's his downfall. If you really listen to the lyrics, you'll find that most of these songs have the stupidest concepts in the world. I realize that the album is following a high school theme, but missteps still can't be ignored, like the statutory "Scandalous Scholastics", a tale about a 15-year-old Travis having relations with one of his teachers (even though that kind of thing isn't really news any more, but...). And there is a series of a cappella raps called "Sloppy Love Jingle" that are all skippable.

If people are wondering where "Cupid's Chokehold" is, the thing is, that's actually a song from the band's previous album The Papercut Chronicles, and the fact that it's being re-released NOW suggests that the guys were getting really desperate for a hit single. And as you know, the song features Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump, and although he sounds fine there, he sounds ridiculous on "Clothes Off", an already horrendous reworking of Jermaine Stewart's "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off", this time stating "We HAVE to take our clothes off."

Lame ideas continue, as "New Friend Request" is a dry story about meeting a girl on MySpace; and although I'm married to a white girl, "Viva la White Girl" didn't do anything for me (probably because it doesn't make much sense). Basically, if Travis rapped more like the way he does on "Shoot Down the Stars", then maybe the band would be more accessible. I'm all for silly music, but As Cruel As School Children is a little too experimental for my taste.

This album when I first saw the cover and the songs they play on the radio I thought it would be just another pop album but I love how they mix pop and rap together to come up with their own style. I especially like the sloppy love jingles especially the last one because that's how most women feel after a night out.

Philippe Jaroussky can teach angels to sing.......2007-03-31

I bought this CD initially for one reason, to hear more from the stellar French counter-tenor, Philippe Jaroussky. I was introduced to his stunning voice with his spectacular recording, "Vivaldi: Virtuoso Cantatas." As expected, he lived up to my high expectations with his latest recording. There is no one in the music scene who sings with the beauty and flourish of this amazing young man.

This CD takes us on a musical tour of discovery through 30 years of Vivaldi's operatic output, which has been mostly unknown. This recording makes a strong argument that Vivaldi's operas deserve to come out of the shadows. Sixty-three minutes of this gorgeous music is not enough! Not surprisingly, many of the brilliant show piece arias were written for the reigning castrati of that time. We'll never know what their voices really sounded like, but Jaroussky is the one artist who makes us cease to wonder, and the only question we have is, did they sound half as good as he does?

Here are some brief notes on the tracks of this recording:

Track 1: A powerful, bravura colatura aria. A great introduction to newcomers to Jaroussky's talents.
Track 2: A tender melody, it's simplicity enchants.
Track 3: The unmistakable sounds of Vivaldi. A "Four Seasons" for male alto.
Track 4: Gorgeous larghetto, reminiscent of some of Handel's best - who knew Vivaldi was such a great composer of opera arias!
Tracks 5-6: Another show piece. Think the legendary castrato Senesino on steroids.
Track 7: A sublime largo, a double concerto for alto and solo violin.
Track 8: An incomparable "aria di tempesta" depicting a shipwreck being tossed from rock to rock. Jaroussky's voice rises above the waves like rays of golden light.
Tracks 9-10: Vivaldi's foray into the traditional "sleep aria." Another bewitching aria given interesting treatment with an orchestration using recorders and oboes. Jaroussky's sustained notes are to die for, as are his brilliant runs and top notes in Track 11.
Track 12: An emotionally tender lament, with one set of strings playing "arco" and another set providing "pizzicato" as Jaroussky's lovely alto floats above it all.
Track 13: Another typical Vivaldi aria with vigorous rhythms, and Jaroussky displaying all his gifts. We can never have enough.
Track 14: A lament written at the high point of Vivaldi's operatic career. One of his most atmospheric works for any instrument. Here Jaroussky shows he's more than a show man and has behind his voice powerful emotion that can tug one's heart.
Track 15: A charming aria with the strings' "pizzicato" evoking the sound of bees and the beat of an impatient heart. With this final track Jaroussky leaves us in love and wanting more.

This recording is a must have for all fans of the male alto. I also recommend it to anyone who enjoys bravura colatura of any voice. I'm sure there will be many a soprano who'll say it's not fair that a man can sing like this!

I'm glad Philippe Jaroussky is introducing us to forgotten Vivaldi gems with his recent recordings. As beautiful as this treasure chest is, I can't help but wonder what rubies and emeralds he'll pull out when he turns to Handel. I hope we'll find out. In the meantime, I'm content to relish in the joy that happens when Jaroussky meets Vivaldi.

One of Bowie's more stellar moments working with Brian Eno, Heroes again sees the artist moving into barely chartered waters (at that point, 1977), creating moving, emotive rock and putting it right up against some very detached and futuristic synthesized sounds. The collection opens with a ferocious rocker, courtesy of Robert Fripp's taut, snarling guitars ("Beauty and the Beast"), and then slides into the roar of "Joe the Lion" without missing a beat. Bowie's vocals have rarely sounded as desperate as they are on "Heroes," the anguished "Blackout" rages on a peculiarly up beat, and suddenly the listener finds they've slipped into a parallel world of icy soundscapes. The next four tracks present glassy synthesizers, stark piano, the ping of Asian-styled guitars, and other styles presumably left over or influenced by the Low recordings. The delicate "Moss Garden" is particularly beautiful, and "Sense of Doubt" is brooding and ominous. The closer, "The Secret Life of Arabia," moves with the rhythm of a snake charmer, and Bowie's vocals are irrepressibly intoxicating. Challenging, and worth the effort. --Lorry Fleming

I'm a fan, generally, of David Bowie and decided to investigate back into his catalog. This disk didn't do anything for me -- it's more like early Lou Reed, but rougher, less focused and less interesting. I'd advise a careful listen to the sample tracks before you purchase to decide if you'll like this 1977 Bowie.

david bowie's second album with brian eno is one of the best albums in both artists discographies... the album uses the same formula that was so successful in Low.. roughly half instrumentals half vocals.. and the match is perfect - the two sides complement one another in a way you would not expect.. highlights of the album are the tracks 'beauty and the beast', sons of the silent age, and the very ethereal 'moss garden'... this is a complete musical experience of two equally gifted artists..

The Pick of the Bunch.......2007-04-13

Bowie's second instalment in the Berlin trilogy is a criminally underrated masterpiece, brimming with invention and vigour.

'Low' was most certainly an amazing achievement and an absolute treat to listen to, but unlike most, I feel that "Heroes" tops it in every regard.

The first side (like 'Low', containing the more conventional songs) has more urgency than the tracks on 'Low'. There is more energy and more depth to the song writing. Where 'Low' was fragments/ideas with magnificent textural framing, Heroes' first side shows really intricate song writing being beautifully combined with dense and innovative arrangements that take the clunky synth and electronic sounds of 'Low' and fuse them into a more sophisticated whole.

The lyrics are also much more intriguing. 'Low' was lyrically and vocally quite sparse, but on "Heroes", Bowie delivers some of his most compelling lyrics. Just couple of the fantastic snippets that pop up include:

'Your lips cut a smile on your face'

'There's slaughter in the air
Protest on the wind
Someone else inside me
Someone could get skinned'

'Sons of the silent age... Don't walk, they just glide in and out of life
They never die, they just go to sleep one day'

And of course we all know the gorgeous lyrics that the title track possesses. Not to mention Bowie's ultimate vocal performance on this track. In fact, the vocals on the "Heroes" album soar like on no other release of his. The songs climax and Bowie belts out some amazingly expressive and emotive performances. Overall, the first half of the record takes the best parts of `Low's' first half and 'Station to Station' and turns it into the most successful and engaging group of tracks that he has ever released.

The second half of the album sees Bowie reprising the ambient themes explored on 'Low' but once again this album outdoes its predecessor. The instrumental tracks on "Heroes" are even more evocative than those on 'Low'. Bowie and Eno once again strip away the clunky synth and electronic sounds and create more focused and more atmospheric pieces second time around.

Bowie feels like more of a presence on this album overall. Less detached, and not hiding away from himself as much. This is further displayed by the re-introduction of his sax playing on a number of tracks. He adds personality and flair to 'Sons of the Silent Age', provides one of many gorgeous melodic layers on 'V-2 Schneider' (which trumps both 'The Speed of Life' and 'A New Career In A New Town'), and his free-jazz styled, heavily treated playing on 'Neukoln' is oddly appealing. Bowie also plays the Japanese Koto on 'Moss Garden' giving a beautifully subtle and sensitive performance on what is a perfect ambient piece.

If you own 'Low', love it, and are wondering which album to get next... well I can't recommend "Heroes" highly enough. If you own 'Station to Station' and love it... ditto. If you have some of Bowie's other albums from some of his other periods and are curious about which of the more experimental albums to start with, this is the one. It's one of those albums that is experimental without compromising quality song writing. It takes the ideas first generated on 'Low' and expands and improves upon them, while introducing a highly unique and infinitely appealing aesthetic all of its own. It is also more timeless than 'Low'. It's sounds are still fresh and haven't dated a bit in the 30 years since its release.

It is not only the best of the Bowie and Eno collaborations (The Berlin Trilogy), it is also, in my opinion, the greatest achievement by this most amazing artist.

Bowie's Greatest.......2007-01-04

Listen. This is Bowie's greatest work, though I would put Outside up there as an unrecognized classic, as well as his soundtrack for The Buddha of Suburbia. And we can all go back to all the other records, because they are all pretty much in the "excellent" category. Station to Station. Low. Ziggy. My favorite: Aladin Sane. The list just goes on and on. His recent work is contemplative and worldly beautiful. There isn't a bad record in his catalog. Compare his work with anybody, anybody working now in any similar genre. Sad how far we've fallen. Sad how farther we will fall.

The inclusion of noise in various pieces here has been done in classical music since the the 1920's with musique concrete, so it should not bother anyone born after, say 1890 or so. I doubt that anyone online was born at that time. I may be wrong. Souls transmigrate, and some of them don't get it even the after hundreds of such transmigrations. Back to the karma pool. Oh, well.

Every piece on this record is amazing, and the preceding reviews note that spectacularly. I won't repeat the praise. I just want to note that the cricicism of this record is a little skewed. Few pieces of art are as timeless as this record. A new fan may not take to it immediately, but with a few listens, will become transformed, much as the lovers in the title track, which, incidentally, is available, sung in German. The German language version actually cuts the English one, it was meant to be sung in German, in which the angst finds its ultimate home, but avoid the French language version. French is a great language for pop, but not for rock and roll.

A superior album for the ages. Required listening and ownership.

Title Track Perfection.......2006-11-15

Let's admit it: "Heroes" is one the best songs ever created, be it by Bowie or anyone else.

That said, this album isn't exactly a perfect one that totally compliment's the title track. The first two tracks are over-produced and noisy, and I say that in a bad way. The two tracks that follow Heroes are quite moody, and that's fine. "V-2 Shneider" is a bit a fun instrumental stuck in the middle of all this, so I guess I can't bash it in any manner. The next three instrumental are execellent exercises in ambiance. The last track, "The Secret Life of Arabia" could've been on Young Americans, except for the fact that it holds up better than a lot of the material on that particular album.

Overall, this album is kept from five-star status because the two tracks that begin the album just leave a bad taste in one's mouth. Also, when compared to Low, there's a certain clunkyness in the tracklisting on Heroes. Whereas the other album flowed well and had two distinct sides, Heroes just has a fractured structure. When all is said and done, however, this is still the album that boasts the track "Heroes," and in all honesty, that makes it totally worth purchasing.

John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.

With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.

The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.

My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."

Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.

Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20

There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.

Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.

Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!

A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07

This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.

Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01

Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Surprised it is not labeled: Explicit.......2007-06-05

I had never heard of Gym Class Heroes until "Cupid's Chokehold" came out. I heard it on the radio while driving with my young son. We both loved the song, so I decided to check out this CD. I made sure it didn't have the Explicit Lyric label before purchasing. For some reason, I decided to listen while my son was not present to make sure it was alright for him to listen to. The entire CD is full of Explicit lyrics. The "F" word is used over and over again. I have no idea how this slipped through the cracks, but this is Absolutely not a clean CD by any means. I was very disappointed with my purchase.

Solid Indie Hip-hop Album........2007-05-18

I started listening to Gym Class Heroes a few years back, in mid 2005 I believe, and absolutely fell in love. I am a diehard hip-hop head at heart, loving emcees like Rakim, Eminem, Saul Williams, The Roots and the like...So the fact that this kid was saying some of the best, most original lines I've ever heard in my entire life amazed me. One of the greatest hip-hop lines I have ever heard is still "Catch me in the source with 5 pills next to my name; like f*ck 5 mics I want 5 vic fame".

On top of this, I am also a diehard indie fan...So finding this band, a deffinate mix of both genres blew my mind. I listened to it non stop, saw every show that came within 120 miles of my home town and became obsessed.

Then of course they blew up. Cupids Chokehold came out, and every pop kid under the sun fell in love...I had to hate them, for at least a while. Typically when this happens with a band, I lose all interest and never listen to htem again. I expected the same of GCH.

But it didn't happen. Despite the fact you can't say your a fan without getting laughed at, I cannot help it. Any hip-hop fan that talks (S word I can't say) would be shut up in a half a second if they heard a song like Pillmatic or Shoot Down The Stars, and any emo/indie fan wouldn't be able to say another word after hearing 7 weeks or even Papercuts.

If you are a music fan, you have to give these guys a listen. They are one of the best genre bending bands I have ever heard, and I believe have the ability to keep coming for a good 5 years.

This is a real neat collection of various tunes from the 60's. The one song theme from "Kelly's Heroes" is worth the cost of the whole CD.

There are several other very nice songs on this CD. Some Patriotic....

Give this a listen, and if you're over 40 you'll say.."Hey, I remember that..".

Organized and aired within days of the September 11 attacks, the fundraising telethon documented here was as remarkable for its subdued sincerity as for its unity of purpose. This double-disc anthology presents the diverse musical content of the broadcast in the order it was aired, with Bruce Springsteen's "My City of Ruins" setting the appropriately somber and introspective tone. And while artists such as Stevie Wonder (with assistance from Take 6 on "Love's in Need of Love") and U2 rise to the occasion with the spiritually uplifting grace expected of them, there are a few surprises here as well. Limp Bizkit and Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznick turn in a spare, if seemingly unlikely, cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," appended with a new verse that asks what may be the 21st century's most compelling question: "Do you think we can change?" Even the viewpoint of John Lennon's anthem "Imagine" (as rendered by Neil Young) is occasionally altered to the first person, tellingly turning the song's idealism into a personal challenge. It's a rare event that can credibly sandwich Wyclef Jean's "Redemption Song," Mariah Carey's "Hero," and a chillingly somber take of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi, before offering up the subtly ironic benediction of Willie Nelson's "America the Beautiful." In the midst of its most trying time in a half century (arguably musically, as well as socially), America the sleeping giant awoke--and first listened to its heart. Unified Set, Uniformly Excellent.......2003-01-19

When Bruce Springsteen starts this CD, "There's a blood red circle on the cold dark ground & the rain is falling down, the church door's thrown open; I can hear the organ's song, but the congregation's gone," we know we are in for a rare musical moment. His song builds softly with a soul stirring inner strength. When the choir joins him, "Come on, rise up," it sends chills down the spine. Stevie Wonder with Take 6 do such a marvelous job with "Love's In Need of Love Today." U2 do a great live version of "Walk On" from their "All That You Can't Leave Behind" CD. It's particularly touching as Bono says, "Hello from London," knowing that their were many British citizens who died with the Americans in the World Trade Towers on September 11. "The darkness will be gone; the weak shall be strong; hold on to your faith," the choir sings behind Faith Hill on the excellent "There Will Come A Day." Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" touches emotions of anger many Americans felt in the wake of the tragedy. Neil Young's "Imagine" is so close to John Lennon's arrangement; but it is one that magically lifts our emotions. This is one of my favorite tracks on the CD. "Someday We'll All Be Free" was my introduction to Alicia Keys. When I heard her sing Donny Hathaway's marvelous song, goosebumps ran up my arm. When she sings, "Hang on to your womanly pride," it touches a chord for all of the women who fell in the tragedy that day. Limp Bizkit's acoustic offering of "Wish You Were Here" builds strongly, "So you think you can tell heaven from hell." Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" with his jazz-inflected piano is a fitting torch tribute that concludes the first CD. The Dixie Chicks' "I Believe In Love" soars beautifully, "Today I got the answer and there's a world of truth behind it; love is out there waiting somewhere, you just have to go & find it." Dave Matthews' "Everyday" is a great acoustic ballad, "Jump in the mud of love, get yourself filthy." Bob Marley's reggae "Redemption Song" is given a strong treatment by Wyclef Jean, "New York City won't you help me sing these songs of freedom?" Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" has a great catchy chorus. Sheryl Crow is positively haunting on "Safe & Sound," "Could you not be sad, could you not break down, after all I won't let go until you're safe & sound." Sting offers "Fragile" which appeared on his "Nothing Like the Sun" CD. Eddie Vedder's "Long Road" has some glorious guitar. The CD concludes with Paul Simon's "Brige Over Troubled Water," and Celine Dion and Willie Nelson. If you just listen to the music, this is an incredibly unified package that holds up as a listening experience as we move farther from that tragic day. If you did not get this soon after the event, don't miss out on this great music! Enjoy!

So many emotions, and some minor quibbles...........2003-01-11

Like many other citizens of the U.S., I sat and watched this 'Telethon' when it was aired shortly after September 11. As another reviewer says above, I am very cynical of the 'Hollywood Elite' and many in the entertainment industry. Many of those folks will take our dollars on one hand, and then tell us how bad we are for the world on the other. Not an attitude I share or condone.

The folks that appeared during this telethon spoke mostly from the heart, with little or no scripting of their comments and words.

I appreciate the generous thoughts behind this event, and what the event meant at the time of it's airing.

For the most part, this event was an opportunity to provide low key celebration of being an American, and for those in New York that were so deeply affected, what it meant to be a New Yorker (such as Billy Joel's performance of "New York State of Mind").

In both this event, and especially with the 'Concert for New York', I felt a little disappointed that it seemed that the people that were affected and impacted in the Washington, DC/Arlington, VA area (at the Pentagon) were overlooked to a large extent, and of course there was little attention to the folks on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania with real American Heros aboard.

That doesn't diminish from the impact of this collection though.

Another reviewer mentions the opening with Bruce Springsteen's ballad "My City of Ruin," which set the stage for most everything that followed.

The performances of these songs, without live audiences, but also free of the studio and the heavy editing/mixing and tweaking that occurs there, are powerful and inspirational.

This *isn't* Toby Keith and his anthem "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (which followed later). It's a collection of songs that will remind you of this great nation, and the spirit of being an American.

A special salute to Celine Dion, who I'd not normally call myself a dedicated fan of (her music was of course done to the point of over popularity in the pop radio arena). Her rendition of "God Bless America" is awe-inspiring and powerful. Beautifully done.

Some of the other highlights include Faith Hill's "There Will Come A Day," Enrique Iglesias' "Hero," and of course, Paul Simon's "Bridge of Troubled Water."

My one minor quibble with this collection is the packaging that has been used in many cases. The CD case for this collection uses a very flimsy and tricky 2 CD holder in the single CD case space. Not the typical flip space, but one that uses a single plastic point to hinge on. I'm sure that this hinge will wear out quickly, and it definitely doesn't like to stay in place inside the case.

My rating for the music: 5 stars. For the packaging: 0 stars.

One Outstanding track.......2002-09-27

I remember the night this concert was broadcast very vividly. It was just a few days after the attack on the WTC, and most of the country probably felt like me- in shock. Watching this concert the night it was held, I wondered where the song choices came from. They did tell alot about the feeling and understanding of the singers.

Some of it was just pap, like the "let's all be friends" and "all we need is peace and love" offerings from Stevie Wonder and Neil Young. Some were traditonal you-can't-go-wrong anthems, like the offerings of Celine and Willie. Some were wistful (Billy Joel), some trite (Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi), some almost defeatist sounding, some pointless, and and some were downright trite.

But the one that really affected me was Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down". Watching it, you knew where Tom stood.

Good Listen.......2002-09-12

This is a wonderful CD. It really put me in a good state of mind on the 11. I love this Cd. I heard it in my LA class and now I have to go and buy it for myself. Every one should buy this CD.

Rousing but...........2006-02-24

This CD, with John Williams at the baton, summons the heroes in a rousing manner with a wide range of Olympic as well as "heroic" (e.g., "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur")selections. Three of the twelve tracks were written by Williams himself with his "Olympic Spirit" being recorded for the first time. The electrifying "Ode to Zeus" by Mikis Theodorakis is probably the single greatest selection.
In an amazing oversight, however, this CD does not include the Olympic Theme.

Enjoyable romp through Olympic Themes.......2005-09-01

In the US at least, John Williams is known more for his movie scores (Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark to name a few), but he has put his stamp on the Olympics with his several themes and fanfares for the Olympics. Dating back to 1984, Mr. Williams has composed many well known fanfares to the Olympics, and this compilation contains several of his fanfares in addition to music used in other Olympics. The original release for the disc was 1996, which makes it current through the Atlanta Games; if you're looking for the work that John Williams composed for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics (2002), you have to go with American Visions (I believe that's the title).

On the whole, the music is well done, but I'm more used to the faster pace of the Parade of the Charioteers found on Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' Hollywood's Greatest Hits Vol. 1.
One other quibble (minor, really) is that people tend to think of the 1984 Olympic Fanfare as being always merged with the traditional Olympic Fanfare, but you can find it separately on By Request by John Williams and the Boston Pops. You'll also have to hunt around for the full composition of what people consider the traditional Olympic Fanfare on another disc, but that's a minor issue.

One nice item on the disc is The Olympic Spirit, which was composed for the NBC Broadcast of the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, but never used. My children really like that piece a lot, and usually request it to be replayed when it finishes.

One of the most uplifting and motivating albums!!!.......2005-07-19

When I first listened to this album, I was in awe of the beauty and grandness of the music composed/performed by John Williams. John can make composing music an exalted art. His music is purely genius and captures the ideas of the album in which the score is in. Back to the album . . . it is AWESOME! This includes many well-known songs but also many undiscovered treasures. Of the twelve songs, I especially enjoyed:

According to legend, it was at Willie Nelson's Fourth of July picnic when Waylon Jennings drunkenly promised a nobody named Billy Joe Shaver that he'd record a whole album of his songs. Apparently it wasn't until Shaver threatened physical violence on Jennings (in front of a Nashville studio full of people) that he finally made good on his promise, although Jennings had only recently been granted full artistic control by RCA. The result was a stunning achievement: 1973's Honky Tonk Heroes was the defining record of the anti-Nashville Outlaw movement--the term came after the album--and a cornerstone in country music history. Featuring bare-bones production and plainspoken, hard-nosed lyrics that celebrated personal freedoms and simple pleasures, the record was a far cry from the demure Nashville Sound. In each other, Jennings and Shaver had found a kindred spirit, and together they rewrote the country rulebook. --Marc Greilsamer

Song for song I think this is one of the best if not the best Waylon CD available. Honky Tonk Heroes is a must own CD for both the serious and the occasional (if there is such a thing) Waylon fan. This CD is vintage Waylon at his very best!

Waylon at his best?.......2006-05-11

Many reviews will tell you that this album, "Honky Tonk Heroes" is Waylon at his best. Well I slightly disagree. Although this album, along with "Dreamin' my dreams" are indeed Waylon at the top of his game, this is second place next to the latter. This one is kind of folksy and lacks the punch that I am used to hearing from Waylon. Even the first song, "Honky Tonk Heroes" is not the same from the very improved studio version found in RCA's greatest hits version. This album will grow on you and you will appreciate the subtle aspects that other reviews speak of, so dont hesitate to buy it. But, "Dreamin my Dreams", now that is really the Waylon I know and love.

Green Gables.......2005-09-28

We reciecved an 8-track tape player and two tapes for X-mas in 1973. We owned & operrated our own 18-wheeler. It's a long way from Lubbock to Brownsville, TX with only 2 tapes (700+ miles, one way) and we thought we were in hog heaven, havin' music on board. One tape was Honkytonk Heroes and the other, Red Rose Speedway. Both have extremely fond memories, but. As we drove down Sunset Blvd. in Brownsville listening to Waylon singing about Green Gables, a glance to the right side of the road revealed Green Gables in all it's glory.

this is such a beautiful album. christine perfect's songs has never been so good, very consistent songs, nice fender rhodes, very balance, her voice sounds so fluid and she teamed so well with bob welch, too bad that was their last album under this line-up that i loved so much, best line-up for me (with peter green of course).
"prove your love" is wonderful. bob welch is on top with "silver heels" and references to sir paul and etta james, his guitars are so tasty, the harmonies are as perfect as christine, and his voice very rockous, mick fleetwood is as always very solid, what a great drummer, sober, but you feel him. the atmospheric songs of bob welch are incredible, i don't understand why he's not like a superstar.
anyway, this album is amazing and remind me a bit of "future games" and the song "bright fire".
it's also the first time bob doesn't have a guitar partner. and the new production sounds probably as good as martin birch. the only thing is that warner should remaster all the albums from that period with bonus, then it would be pure heaven.

At this point the band was best known as a British Blues band, and acclimated with a style that was reminiscent to the US California Style, thanks to the American Guitarist Bob Welch, writing most of the songs on this album and peaking as a great songwriter.

"Heroes are Hard to find" is a great British Blues rock album, defining the 1970's big contribution to the Rock Music. This album is recommended for the 70's Blues Soft Rock lovers and, definitely to all Fleetwood Mac Fans.
3 stars for today's music standard, 4 stars for the 70's.

VERY Underrated Mac album.......2006-12-29

I am a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, and when I say that, I mean that I am a huge fan of the rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, and all of the talented musicians that they have drafted into their band over the last 40 years.

I own most of the band's studio output, but only recently picked up this album due to the fact that so many fans have been lamenting it for so long. All I have to ask is "what's wrong with everybody?" After giving this only a few listens, I have decided that it is my favorite album, only second place after the group's double-whopper TUSK.

This is by far the band's darkest and murkiest album, and the odd cover artwork emphasizes that fact. I guess most people don't expect 'dark' of Fleetwood Mac, but IMO it works here. I can honestly say that the only song on this album that I don't enjoy is Bob Welch's "Born Enchanter." Even if he is being tongue-in-cheek (which I sincerely hope he is), the song grates on my nerves for some reason.

I simply love the triple lineup of Welch numbers "Coming Home"-"Angel"-"Bermuda Triangle," leading directly into Christine's "Come a Little Bit Closer." And I think that "Prove Your Love" is a new favorite, as I can't seem to stop playing it.

The only reason I am giving this album 4 stars is because, like others have said, the production could have been better and "Born Enchanter" is rather annoying. However, I think the former problem can be improved upon with some remixing and remastering of the album. Get on those Fleetwood Mac reissues Rhino/Warner Bros!!!

The good songs are hard to find.......2005-05-14

As others have noted, this was a time of turmoil for the group. Now trimmed back to a fourpiece (they had just lost guitarist/singer Bob Weston and singer Dave Walker), they also changed producers after 5 straight albums they had either self-produced or collaborated with Martin Birch on. This CD also leans really heavily on material from Bob Welch (this would be his last release with the band) and it suffers deeply for that.

Most of the few highlights here are furnished by Christine McVie. The title cut is a nice lament about male prevarication. The understated "Prove Your Love" is also a winner. Of the Welch contributions, the only real standouts are the mystical "Bermuda Triangle" and gentle closer "Safe Harbour".

There are plenty of miscues, filler, and outright bad material here. McVie's "Come a Little Bit Closer" is produced like it WANTS to be a hit, but it's much too slight to stick in the memory. Welch's "She's Changing Me" sounds like Chicago colliding with the Mac...the horns don't work here. The handclap bridge in "Silver Heels" seems too poppy and out of place in the context of the rest of the tune, which is execrable anyway.

The silver lining to this disc is that what might have been a death knell turned into the band's finest hour just one album later...

Fleetwood Mac looses steam.......2004-01-24

Heroes Are Hard To Find is the final album to feature Bob Welch. And he goes out with a bang too contributing to most of the songs off the album. Welch highlights are Angel (not the Nicks version later on Tusk), Coming Home (very spacey semi-instrumental),Bermuda Triangle, Steel Heels, and the instrumental closer Safe Harbour.

Christine McVie contributes to the chipper title track, the soft Come A Little Bit Closer as well as the poppy Prove Your Love.

Bottom Line: Not a great album, but certainlly better than Penguin. You do get a sense that the band was losing steam or burning out by this point and they needed some new fresh ideas. Enter Stevie and Linsdey
