3 out of 5 stars Where is the bass Maceo?.......2005-06-15

After reading the many 'rave' reviews about this album (and having the odd album of Maceo's already) I promptly followed suit and ordered my own. I must say that after listening to it I was fairly unimpressed.

Yes there is definitely some great funk on here and virtuoso playing. But, and here's a few butts for ya!

1) Where is the bass??? - I have a high end audio system and I would have to say that this is about the most anemic disc I have ever heard! The one very thing that funk needs is a solid backbeat and bottom end and this disc just doesn't have any. With any luck you can crank on the bass control on your system but why do we have to do this? The recording/mastering engineers should have known better.

2) Candy Dulfer - might be pretty but she doesn't add anything funky to this disc. Reminiscent of Kenny G and would have been better off this album.

3) Maceo's singing (assuming its him) - better spent wrapping his lips around a reed. Sweet Georgia is a tired old tune, not much for funk either and basically is a big lead sinker.

4) 'So Good' sped up wasn't very inspiring either and the original James Brown version (which he obviously would have played on also) just wipes it by comparison. Nothing inspiring with this selection.

I could go on, but these were the main beefs...

I'm sure the guy is great live, but this record, judged on its merits (rather than some memory of a concert of years ago that others seem to be recalling) is only average.

Cheers, Kendrick

5 out of 5 stars Ooooh, what's that you're doin'? Sure looks good to me!.......2005-04-06

This is the best live performance ever recorded, EVER. I'd give my right leg to have been there.

Any drummers here? There's enough tight licks to send you to the woodshed to practice for a decade. Almost every backbeat sends chills down my spine.

This album is truly a testament to instrumental musicians. Everybody plays their part, nobody steps on anyone else, each musician inspires the others to play their best, and the result is a sublime collective whole. Machines will never groove as hard humans, and this album is proof.

I'm on my third copy in over a decade, the CDs just can't seem to hold up to the amount of times I play them.

5 out of 5 stars If for nothing else, to rock your party.......2005-02-12

This album is great and in heavy rotation from my collection. The version of "Shake Everything You Got" will bring any room full of loungers and chatters to their feet and really get the party rolling.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest way to discover Maceo Parker.......2004-12-30

Undoubtedly the greatest way to discover Maceo Parker. This live recorded at Cologne in 1992 bring together Maceo, Fres Wesley, Pee We Elis and more guest (Kim Mazel, Candy Dufler...).

5 out of 5 stars Maceo needs a crown - he'e the king........2004-10-05

Maceo Parker was always James Brown's right-hand man, and for good reason. He is one smokin' sax player. But he's more than that. He's one of very few icons in the world of funk. Ask anyone. It just doesn't get as good as Maceo. He's raw, powerful and sooooo soulful. Like some of the other reviewers, I've had the good fortune of seeing him live a few times, and he never disappoints. Most people his age are kicking back in their Lazy-Boys and collecting their retirement checks. Maceo is out there blowin' his horn so hard the roof could fly off the building. And like few live albums out there, this album is actually able to capture a lot of that vibe. Played through some good speakers, "Life On Planet Groove" is liable to get the dead up and dancing.

4 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2007-03-08

A little know fact is that Gerald Levert turned down the huge All 4 One song I Swear so he hooked up with the same producer for the huge single I'd Give Anthing. I'd Give Anything was the lead single from his Groove On CD. Gerald Levert's emotive baritone excels on Groove On. The Levert feel is evident on every side. Productions, arrangements and songs are by Gerald Levert and Edwin Nicholas, save for a couple, the most notable being "I'd Give Anything" by David Foster. "Answering Service" stands out with its opening monologue; "Have Mercy" illustrates Gerald's powerful begging style of delivery to perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2007-02-24

To the reviewer below me. "Groove On" is NOT Gerald Levert solo debut Cd.
It was "Private Line" that came out in 1991 but I will agree that I favor the "Groove On" as his best Cd to date.

5 out of 5 stars Groove On is Definitely One of Gerald's Best Pieces.......2006-11-12

This was Gerald's first solo CD and like with many first CDs, I believe it's his best of all of his CDs. I absolutely liked every cut except for the first cut which was the title cut "Groove On". I could do without that but hey, everything else makes up for it. This is real down home soul. This is the type of music babies are made on. I still say Luther was good but had nothing on Gerald. They are two different types artists. Luther sings nice and crisp, but when Gerald sings certain songs, you feel it down in your soul. I give this CD 5 Stars hands up. This CD is a collectors item and just full of good soul gritty Gerald Levert songs. You can not go wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional voice - He will be missed @}->---.......2006-11-11

I couldn't believe it when I heard this morning that Gerald had died at only 40 years old. Unbelievable. He was such an amazing talent - a powerful and silky smooth baritone voice that was gorgeous to listen to.
This is one of my favourite cd's of his. It has one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard on it - I'd Give Anything. That is a fantastic song that I still love after all of these years. I also really love Same Place, Same Time and Have Mercy. It's one of his best cd's and certainly one of my favourites (apart from G.). His voice was so full of emotion and it stands out here really well. It's a stunning love cd and it is full of bedroom music. I really recommend this to all R&B fans and fans of his in general. To know that we won't hear any more new music is the biggest shame. At least we can hear this over and over to hear his voice whenever we want. Go get a copy of this - it's worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Solo Success.......2004-07-11

this is without a doubt the best gerald levert album ever. stepping out of the shadow of his father eddie levert of the ojays, gerald comes through with a cd that is totally mind blowing. gerald is musical genious who could teach some of todays r&b singers how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Latin Swing music.......2007-01-14

Highly recommend also for lovers of latin music.

This is the sort of CD you'd sit and listen to in an afternoon, while doing something else. Great easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars Orgasmic.......2007-01-09

This guy's voice is sexy and sensual. He has a huge range of things he can do with his voice. 'Ya' is one song where he showcases his voice quite nicely. Magdalena, Mi Amor is a remake of Quimbara with a plena boricua flavor. In all, this CD is one of their best.

4 out of 5 stars fun, but not their best........2000-06-27

I first got to know DLG w/ Gotcha, and then I decidded to buy this cd, knowing that it would have had to be teh bomba since Gotcha was really good. I was a little disappointed in this cd, but there are some great songs on here. Ya, the first one and others are worth it! Add this cd to your collection, but if you buy anythign from them, make sure it is Gotcha first!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......1999-11-10

There is not much to say... This album is great... The sounds, full with the latin style. The lyrics, the voices mixing and an incredible life touch... That's DLG best work to date. Just an art piece.

5 out of 5 stars DLG is the Bomb!.......1999-11-08

This album is the Bomb! I have yet to get the 1st album, but I have this and "Gotcha." This album is without a doubt the best album I've ever heard. Great to Salsa to, and "Magdelena, mi amor (Quimbara)" is a perfect street Samba track.

5 out of 5 stars Not exactly 'Hooked On Classics'..........2007-05-07

Quite a find. My brother introduced me to this CD recently (even went so far as to 'burn' me a copy of select tracks), but I had to have a copy myself. If that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is...

As other reviewers have noted, this is a good CD to 'chill out' to, and it is interesting to hear the ideas that each separate classical piece inspired in the different DJs.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth grooves, almost flawless listening.......2007-04-08

If you're a fan of the likes of portishead, Massive Attack, Nightmares on Wax or Thievery Corporation or just someone enjoys cool low key funky instrumental tunes, then you will love this.

All the tunes are quite recognisable from their original classical incarnations (unlike some previous crossover classial pops which massacre the original). The only tune that I think falls somewhat short is Rihma's version of Swan Lake ( a decent jazzy hip hop version) which promises but never delivers the crescendo that tchaikosky's original waltz always built to and delivered in spades. However, my discrimination here maybe due to the fact that I have listened to the classical version by untold orchestras and this is the one part that never deviates.

This minor hiccup aside, I find it hard to pick a favourite track as they are all just so dammned good, even some of the less famous tunes which I had previously never been aquainted with.

This is a great chill out album I recommend it highly

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-03-29

I have never heard anything like this before! Remixes of classical masterpieces by Beethoven, Bach and others. Great beats, very intelligent, not over the top. HIGHLY recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Worth It For "Mr. G." Alone.......2006-03-25

I concur with the reviewer that found some weak spots in the album, but it's so true that "Groovin'For Mr. G." is perhaps one of the best organ jams ever. Groove never got the level of attention like that of Jimmy Smith, but he ranks right up there with him and the likes of Milt Buckner and Jack McDuff. If you like B-3 organ, you gotta have some Groove Holmes in your collection

4 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2006-03-17

This CD is an important part of music history. We may never see a human so in tune with the hammond organ again. Hell- they hardly make these organs anymore! Good jazz, blues and funk. If you can play like this guy, I want your details, and we'll make an awesome funk album together.

4 out of 5 stars A much sampled Blue Note album.......2002-06-09

Neither time nor remastering can hide the fact that this is an album of two parts; one part VERY funky ( and hence much sampled) and one half music that has dated quite considerably. When it's good, such as on "Groovin' for Mr G", "Down home funk" and Bobby Timmon's "This here" it's an excellent slab of churning bluesy material that really cooks. Elsewhere it contains material that illustrates the limitations of the line up. On "Theme from Love Story" and A.C.Jobim's "Wave" there's not enough 'Groove Holmes', and altogether too much space for Weldon Irvine on electric piano - the recorded sound of the piano is not that great, and Gerald Hubbard on guitar struggles for space. "Don't mess with me" has scat interventions from percussionist James Davis. The remastering might also have made more of the thunderous bass sound from Jerry Jemmott (Chuck Rainey replaces him on the Love Story theme). It was all recorded on one day in 1971 and perhaps could have benefitted from more arrangement time. That said, the three tracks that I mentioned at the top of the review probably make the mid price entrance fee worthwhile, and especially for the 4.10 of "Groovin' for Mr G" . Buy it and spot all the use that's been made of those tracks, down the years, by those crafty samplers!

    Album Description

Prolific Mr. Al has put together another 14 original educational movement tunes for young children. Like his previous albums, all of these songs will get the kids up and moving while they are practicing skills or learning concepts. some songs deal with emotional issues like "I Don't Like It" which gives children the words they need to handle difficult situations. or "Mind Your Manners" which, as the title states, reminds them when to use their manners. For the first time, mr. al has a couple songs with a Latin beat "Turn Around and Dance" and "Try To Be Nice". These songs also include Spanish and English phrases so not only will they be learning about being kind, they will also pick up a few new language skills. Three songs are game oriented. All the songs will have kids wanting to dance to the beat. Mr. Al has included activities to do with each song to help extend the lessons. All in all this is a great and enjoyable way to "groove" into learning!

5 out of 5 stars Groove Holmes at his best.......2004-10-04

This CD is a masterpiece, I was not aware that Groove Holmes was that good. The swinging is there all the time. This is really my taste of organ jazz at its best, I am a beginner in the field myself. The fellow musicians, Gene Edwards on guitar and George Randall on drums, have a perfect timing and are apparently also very inspired on this recording from 1966. I rate this one as a reference together with Jimmy Smith's "The Master" and "The Master II" from 1993 and the swedish master Pierre Sward's "Organ Jazz'n Soul" from 1993.

2 out of 5 stars Tears to the Eyes.......2004-09-17

I have not owned any Groove albums, but I heard one track on the radio, and then I sampled the tracks on this album. This live stuff is raw, energized, soulful, gritty, down home true Hammond B3. From what I can tell on these short samples, these tracks are not befogged in a stew of corny 60's and 70's "progressive" crap... and so much the better! I'm ordering it now, to go with my other B3 stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Gentlemen, start your engines!.......2004-06-20

Wow, Groove's on form for this one.
    He's keepin' it really real.

It sounds like he's been listening to a lot of early Jimmy Smith and the energy is incredible.
He plays some nice tunes too.

This is one to get. A thrilling document of how it was back in the day, back in the club.

4 out of 5 stars Off the tracks........2004-05-31

I've never been a big Holmes' fan--his registrations in the post-Jimmy Smith era seemed awfully retro and restricted at a time when Charles Earland and Larry Young were coming up with new sounds and McGriff was at least mixing them up. Moreover, Groove's bass lines were no match for Big John Patton's or Donald Patterson's. On the other hand, I've never heard a lounge organist go after it like Holmes does on this "live" session, recorded at Basie's Harlem night club in the late 60's. The tempos are furiously, even insanely, fast on both "Indiana" and "Rifftide," and Groove plays chorus after chorus like a man possessed--or a demon on speed.

Although no train wreck occurs, you can't help but feel some sympathy for the drummer, George Randall, who falters but finishes. The rhythmic feel reminds me of "Bags and Trane," a session on which Connie Kay is always slightly behind the beat set by bassist Paul Chambers. I was rooting for Randall all the way, long after he'd abandoned the pointless task of trying to locate his hi-hat on the off-beats. This is Groove's groove, and he's strong enough to insure that he has his way. It's also at once exhilarating and punishing music, the relentless and merciless groove of a killer player. I can't take too much of it at a sitting, and I don't dare put it on while my wife is in the house. This is music for the big boys, best saved for a night on the town.

    5 out of 5 stars Schizoids Review.......2004-06-29

I came across this by chance , after seeing the overcoats listed in a vinyl catalog and wondered if they were on CD. Luckily this group is available on CD. They are incredible i think. They sound like 60s psychedelic meets new wave meets post punk. They sound a little like early B-52s,Talking Heads,The Stranglers and Pere Ubu , the vocals are keen and zany and neurotic , the basslines purr and are oh so keen , and the keyboards and song structuring are well done. Check these guys out. Not alot of people know about them and im the first cat to write a review about them and i think they are excellent. Ill save the rest of the details for your listening experience. You will surely dance and feel this one.

Mel man, how do you do it? Smooth, cool, funky-down-to-the-string-of-your-socks just flows. The title track is so out of sight, my poor Washburn HB-35 stood up and asked me why I can't play like that.

Great cover art, showing three young relatives (children?) of Mel's. Heads up, kids: you have one cool daddy. If he ever wants to teach you some chops, take notes from the Zen Master of funk.
