She Had Your Man Once & You Had a Hit Once.......2005-10-18

Mokenstef is what you call a one hit wonder. Sometimes I wonder how such a stupid song like He's Mine became a hit, it's simple; Dumb catchy lyrics. The song doesn't even make much sense and whoever wrote this is probably one of the reasons for Mokenstef not being her today. This is one of those songs that catch you off guard because the lyrics are way out there. Mokenstef is one of the many groups during the time were record labels tried to push so many R&B groups into mainstream. Mokenstef basically filled up chart space with filler material with their time. Now that other single they put out was even worse so I want even waste my time on that one. Sadly Mokenstef is not here and I'm sure too many people really dont care.

I would purchase this CD again because of the slow jams, He's Mine and Sex In The Rain, (Both of which you can get on CD Single). I also liked, It Happens, and Just Be Gentle. Some of the other songs are less than can be desired. I believe that is more of a production problem than a singing problem. These ladies sound great with the right material.

I was in love with this cd back in the 6th grade. My favorite tracks were #1,2,and 4. Even to this day He's Mine (Remix) is still the jam. Listening to this cd now as a Senior in College many of the lyrics and those very wack raps seem to be very juvenile and not clearly thought out but hay that's the music of the 90's!!!

Mokenstef - Azz Izz is in my top 30 of all time of albums. This CD was a big hit in the summer of '95. They were not the best vocalists in the world but their laid back personalities fit the mode of a lot of us in our late teens, early twenties at that time. My favorite track is number 8, "It Happens". Even though I am here in crappy St. Louis. My heart is always on the west coast and if you are look for a CD with a laid back feel to it and you're not looking for heavyweight CD, then this CD is right your alley. All ya in Cali', keep holding it down. I'll be around.

Promising Debut!.......2004-01-22

In '95, the urban market was saturated with girl groups. The premiere groups (SWV, Xscape, and TLC) were the standard. But other groups emerged (Pure Soul, Kut Klose, Blackgirl), looking to cash in on the girl group demand. With that said, Mokenstef fits into the latter category.

They managed to manufacture one big hit in their 2nd single "he's mine". Peaking at #2 r&b, the slow-burning tune was all the rage on slow jam radio in '95. With its memorable chorus, silky smooth harmony, and convincing lead, no wonder it is a classic to this day. Its popularity and clout you have would think it is the best track on the album. It isn't. That title belongs to "Baby Come Close". Normally, covers are not better than the original, but mokenstef proves that it can be done. Other tracks worth listening to are the 1st single "sex in the rain" and the pop-laced "it happens".

With all of their star-studded slow jams, it's a shame that their midtempo portion is all but memorable. The rapping is simple, the choruses are unmelodic, and the production is sparse. It's safe to say their midtempo portion cost them massive commerical success. Nevertheless, Mokenstef had a decent debut, with a hit single and other notable tracks that should have been singles. Unfortunately, they fell through the cracks and will go down as a one-hit wonder.
