Great songs on this CD with a lot of different artists..........2007-02-11

This CD is growing on me by the minute! The classic voices of Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby are not to be missed. Mix that with the fun tunes from the movie "White Christmas" and the wonderful voices of Danny Kaye, Peggy Lee, the Mellowmen, and others... and you've got a treasure.

Warning: This is NOT the original movie soundtrack. I don't really think the origninal movie sountrack exists because I have searched pretty extensively. However, all the songs that were in the movie are included (some twice by two different artists, e.g. "Sisters"), most are just not the MOVIE VERSION of the song. Also, there are songs included that are not even in the movie (e.g. "Susie Snowflake", "Winter Wonderland.") All in all this is an excellent CD and well worth the price for the 22 songs.

Ultimate White Christmas??.......2007-01-11

Well I was a bit disappointed with this CD, it does not have many of the original recordings from the movie and the recordings that they do have sometimes lacks one of the artists that sang it originally, for example Rosemary Clooney is absent from the "Snow" number, which I found disappointing. Despite this if you like White Christmas the movie this is still a must have, just don't expect it to meet all your expectations.

Searched Over 20 Years For This!.......2007-01-10

I have searched over 20 years for the orginial soundtrack to White Christmas. While this is not exact to the movie, it is close enough for me, and brings so many happy memories of my mom, who passed away one Christmas when I was young. All I need to stir a warm thought is Bing's "Count Your Blessings". It is the last song my mom sang the night before she died and I just get the chills. ANY fan of this movie, this soundtrack is a MUST for you! Highly recommended!

This was a difficult disc to find at local stores. Lovely soundtrack - just like the movie. Amazon did the job.

This Recording Is All we Have sadly.......2007-01-08

Each december 1st I wish and hope and pray that the original 1954 soundtrack to this holiday classic would make it's cd debut, but it never does dammit!. I bought this cd and have to say that it's very good, and is the nearest thing we have to a movie soundtrack of this Irving Berlin jewel. I love this cd and have played it many times, even after the holidays are over. We can only hope that a ligit recording comes out someday, but untill then, this is a fun disc. Mike

Oldie but Goodie.......2007-03-28

This is a wonderful children's CD. My two kids loved it when they were little (it was a record then) and now I keep several on hand to include in gifts for babies and small children. Burl Ives' voice is "easy on the ears" for adults as well.

I highly recommend this CD. I grew up listening to Burl Ives as a child (his adult stuff), and was looking for some of his music for my son. This CD is perfect - my 2 1/2 year old son's current favorites are the "train song" (little engine that could) and the "goose song". We listen to it over and over in the car.

I listened to it all of the time and even now I still remember the lyrics. The CD provides good, wholesome, entertainment and also wonderful phonemic awareness opportunities for little ones.

I suppose i shouldn't have been surprised to read the other reviews and stories of how precious this album--and its memories---were to the other reviewers; back when we "baby-boomers" were little the music/media field was MUCH smaller--only a handful of artists putting out children's music. so like with "hula hoops" or "mickey mouse club", the folks weaned on this album probably numbers in the millions! Who knew!? but now most are too old or too "cool" to remember this "classic rock(a-bye)" album. so it was a pleasant surprise when i too typed in this title on a whim and found such kindred spirits! Anyway, for the newcomers- this is great folk music (with a child's style) delivered by a master the likes of which they just don't make no mo'! thanx, burl!

Try to forget the fact that Bing Crosby probably never had to record another song in his life after he immortalized "White Christmas." If you can do that, you'll find plenty more to like in this crooning Christmas collection. There's the Romantic Bing, charming the tinsel right off the tree with "The Christmas Song," and that cure for cabin fever, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" There's the Reverent Bing, solemnly singing "Adeste Fideles." And of course, there's Bing the Showman, belting out "Good King Wenceslas" with a bit of that ole vaudeville shine. But no matter what you're told, "White Christmas" will be the number one reason for sticking this one in your stocking. And who can blame you? This may be the most classic Christmas CD of all time. If you aren't familiar with it, you must have been under a rock for the last 50 years. If you don't like it, you should probably go crawl under a rock for the next 50 years.

I bought this for my mom, who grew up listening to my grandmother's vinyl White Christmas album... This is wonderful Christmas music that is warm, and fun, and timeless.

Same Old, Same Old.......2007-01-18

This is just a reissue of the old MERRY CHRISTMAS album that was available since the mid-50s. The title's been changed, but the playing order is the same and the incorrect versions of two of Bing's Christmas hits are the same. "Silent Night" was a hit in 1935, yet its a much later recording that appears here. "White Christmas" first charted in 1942, yet the version here is the 1947 re-recording. "Faith of Our Fathers" isn't even a Christmas song! There's a better, 44-track collection of Bing's Christmas recordings for Decca that includes the correct versions of the hits as well as the remakes and excludes "Faith of Our Fathers." Typical Bing class and style. Had it on cassette for years and it is gone. Happy to be able to replace it with this CD. Great listening.

This CD is one of my favorites to listen to when I feel the need to be closer to the Spirit. Mack Wilberg is a master at transforming old hymns into glorious arrangements. I have had experience with high school students who love singing his arrangements even within the context of a world that seems in a state of constant conflict. THIS CD IS FABULOUS!

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

A bright splash of holiday cheer, Irving Berlin's White Christmas is a stage version of the classic 1954 Bing Crosby film. The plot is basically the same: two GIs (Brian D'Arcy James and Jeffry Denman in the Bing and Danny Kaye roles) become a song-and-dance team after World War II, run into a couple of dames (Anastasia Barzee and Meredith Patterson in the Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen roles), then head up to Vermont with the girls to put on a show in a barn to save the inn run by their former commanding officer. The familiar songs are borrowed from the show ("Sisters," "Snow," "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," the title tune), augmented by other Berlin hits ("I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," "I Love a Piano," "Let Yourself Go") and snappily orchestrated in period style by Larry Blank. The four principals are the ones who debuted the show in San Francisco in 2004, plus Karen Morrow as Martha Watson. I love this album -- I saw the show in SF twice and recently in Detroit -- the album captures all of the wonderful score and the cast on the album is super -- although they made one curious recording faux pas as far as I am concerned -- why records a Randy Skinner tap dance show without including any of the tap on the recording? Still -- I listen to it constantly in the car -- it feels like Christmas year round!

WhiteChristmas...the new theatrical cast version.......2007-02-21

Oh my Lord! Who would think you could beat Bing Crosby and the rest of the original cast for this musical. I saw it in the theater, when I was seven years old and have my whole family addicted! We watch it every Christmas and in between. It's a family tradition. This album is absolutely fantastic. I hesitated getting it. I was afraid I would not like it compared to the movie track, (which is non existent, actually). To make a long story short, you will NOT be disappointed! The extra Irving Berlin songs are incredible. The theatrical renditions of these time-honored tunes is wonderful and inspiring! It you are a fan of Irving Berlin, you enjoy great vocals, and you love Broadway, you will love this album. It couldn't be better! (... Not the same as Bing and company, of course, but equally wonderful to listen to!)

Enjoyable CD based on the latest stage version of White Christmas. The sound quality could have been a little better. I saw the show on Boston last year and this a fairly decent recording of the stage show.

Looking for a straight-ahead Christmas record, no gimmicky seasonal songs or original songs trying to sound like classics? Look no further than Martina McBride's White Christmas. It's so completely straight and narrow that the music doesn't even sound country, country-rock, or anything but a very predictable slab of easy-listening pop--strings and all, safe as milk. McBride's not out to sell anything but the songs, all 10 of them, including such staples as "The Christmas Song," "Away in a Manger," "I'll Be Home for Christmas," and... you get the idea. Deep? Not particularly. Surprising? You be the judge. McBride's not blessed with a terribly distinctive voice, and the arrangements are more faithful to the original versions than swans who mate for life. --Martin Keller

A beautiful Christmas album!.......2007-04-10

Now, just because Martina McBride sings country music doesn't mean this cd is in any way country - It's not. It's a great classic Christmas cd with all the classic Christmas songs! Martina sounds amazing on classic songs such as "Do you hear what I hear", "Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow", as well as "Away In A Manger". My personal favourite though is "Silent Night" - one of my favourite Christmas songs, and Martina makes it sound like a beautiful lullaby. A great cd to listen to by the fire while wrapping presents!

The Best Ever.......2007-01-19

I was looking for a Christmas CD - and I needed to look no further than this CD. My husband does not care for "country" music - and even he enjoyed it! It has music you've heard of - not like some of those compilation CD's. I recommend this CD to anyone who wants to hear good Christmas music.

Martina delivers Christmas with no frills in this wonderful CD. Her crystal clear voice is a true match for these Christmas classics. She doesn't try to put her own spin on the songs, she just sings 'em like they should be sung! Listening to the CD inspired me to buy tickets to her Christmas concert tour, which was the best gift to myself in years!! In the words of my 5 year old, "Martina is just awesome"!

I am not a country fan, but this already one of my favorite holiday CD's. Her voice is smooth and beautiful. It is a classic to be enjoyed for generations.

There's a commercial inevitability to holiday song collections that can tempt music fans to mutter "humbug" under their breath. Yet while this collection (released in conjunction with the Tenors' Christmas Spectacular tour of 2003) is no less market savvy, in the end the trio's earnest, energetic performances earn their fair shair of respect. The trio's Celtic shadings impart considerable warmth to "Fairytale of New York" and other performances, but it's the range of influences they (also in solo and duet turns, all solidly backed by the Czech National Chamber Orchestra) bring to bear elsewhere that adds compelling new dimensions to these holiday favorites. Anthony Kearns' "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" may be solidly traditional, but Ronan Tynan imparts "I'll Be Home For Christmas" with some deft, jazzy drama while Finbar Wright gives "Mary's Boy Child" an unexpected Carribean spin. Elsewhere, the folk-classical influences behind "We Three Kings," "O Holy Night," and the gospel traditional "How Great Thou Art" span renaissance, baroque, and modern with a grace missing from the on-the-sleeve sentiments of the closing duo of patriotic warhorses--what would the Prince of Peace make of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," anyway? --Jerry McCulley

This was VERY disappointing - too noisy & just the wrong type of music for these guys. I played it once & will try to get someone to take it off my hands - I love listening the them, usually, but this album is just a dud.

Beautiful and Amazing.......2004-12-18

When I fist listened to the clips from this CD on Amazon I wondered why on earth they put the patriotic songs at the end, and also wondered a little at the other non christmas songs. After listening to it several times however I realized why. They don't leave Jesus in the manger, but take him all the way up to today! Wow. To me that is totally amazing. There arn't many christmas CD's that do that, but I think it really balances things out. I really enjoyed the Drummer Boy, and all of the rest of the songs. I would definantly say that this was a good buy.

This recording is a wonderful addition to any Christmas collection. It has power, charm and just enough reverence! Anthony Kearn's "Lord's Prayer" is magnificent! Finbar Wright's "How Great Thou Art" is awe-inspiring! After four years with the "Irish Tenors" poor Mr. Wright still must endure the ignorance of a few "fans", being constantly compared to John McDermott. Finbar took the "Irish Tenors" to a new level, as acknowledged by both Kearns and Tynan. I wonder how long "Ringo" had to endure being compared to Peter Best? Get over it people!

Another Winner.......2003-12-22

In their second Christmas album, the three Irish tenors have another very lovely collection of Christmas favorites and a few not so well known. The duets are particularly beautiful and, while I, like other reviewers, would have preferred an all-Christmas album, the American anthems are stirring and well done. My only caveat is the absence of John McDermott, whom I miss. His voice added something less homogenized to the mix and although Finbar Wright has a more operatic tenor voice, I would prefer McDermott if I had my druthers. Nonetheless, this a a grand Christmas album and I recommend it enthusiastically.

The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Wonderfully Different & Addicting! And All Your Friends Will Be Calling HOO-HOO!.......2005-08-23

First, let me state I don't listen to opera singers that much; thus, don't expect a hypercritical review here. (Really, is there ANY field of music that has more hypercritics than opera?) I got this CD simply because Columbia House had it on sale for $2.99, and I wanted some new Christmas CDs.

I found the CD delightful beyond words. It has some beautiful versions of well-known Christmas songs, as well as songs I've never heard before. "Carol of the Drum" and "War Is Over" are my two favorites, with "Sleigh Ride" a close third.

Sure, there is some tripping over of words by these three great opera stars...but that makes it even more enhancing in my opinion. Pavarotti was particularly amusing when he was singing: "And all our friends are calling 'HOO-HOO'!" (Watch the DVD for Carreras' reaction to that one!) And let's not forget Pavarotti singing: "I'll be home for Christmas. You can PLAY on me."

The children's chorus is great, the Vienna Symphony is great...and, once again, buy or rent the DVD so you can get the full affect of this astounding Christmas concert...the music, the lights, the colors, and the marvelous Steven Mercurio conducting it all.

Wonderful and funny compilation.......2005-03-09

The Three Tenors are, of course, wonderful to listen to. This is also a funny CD. When they sing the more modern songs (Happy Christmas by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, for example) they have trouble keeping up with the pace of the song. They almost sound like they're tripping over the syllables, because as opera singers they are more accustomed to long, drawn out vowels, not fast ones. This doesn't hurt the song at all, it makes it more interesting to listen to. It's a great CD. I would recommend this as an addition to any collection of Christmas music.

A historical meeting..........2004-11-28

Although several labels already had Christmas albums of the three tenors in their catalogue, the three maestros never actually trioed on these releases. When Plácido Domingo and the "Christmas in Vienna" team started preparing the eighth concert in the series (six predecessors were captured by Sony, and one, titled "Celebration of Christmas" issued by Erato-Warner), they made a monumental decision: Re-uniting three of the greatest voices of the current music business.
For one and a half hour, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti performed the greatest Christmas songs and carols from around the world. Nearly 65 minutes of this monumental concert are captured on this disk. The opening version of "O Holy Night" (aka "Cantique De Noel", "Minuit, Chrétien") by Domingo and Pavarotti would be reason enough to get this one. But wait, there is far more on the way, than selections from the classical genre. The real enjoyment starts, when the three tenors do one of the most romantic arrangements of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" ever heard and fade from a rousing "La Virgen Lava Pa`nales" into one of the finest treatments of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ever heard. Also of great interest is the trio arrangement of "Let It Snow!", which is included on some of the import versions and on the DVD.
If you are a hopeless completist like me, you may be asking, what happened to the 25 minutes cut from the CD release. Well, first let me say, that none of the currently available releases has the order of the songs as they were performed in the concert. Although this is a live recording, handclaps and other characteristics of a live recording are hardly audible on the CD version. Two tracks, "Jingle Bells" and "Let It Snow", which had clearly audible handclaps at the beginning and at the end of the performance (and therefore couldn't be faded out) can be found on the mentioned import disk and on the DVD's PCM soundtrack. "Children of Christmas" (a Plácido Domingo Jr. composition originally introduced in "Christmas In Vienna IV" by Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton) and "Ay" Para Navidad" can be found exclusively on the DVD. Currently unavailable on any official release is the "Overture" (which can be found on the DVD, but abridged with sound effects). So here's the actual running order: "Overture", 20, 2, 1, 11, 3, 4, "Children of Christmas", 16, 17, 6, 15, 8, "Let it snow", 5, "Ay! Para Navidad", 9, 19, 14, 18, 12, 13, "Jingle Bells", 7, 21, 10;
If you still doubt about the quality of this performance, let me say one for sure: As other volumes in the series will slowly disappear (as some of them have already in the US), this one is a matter of decades and when you buy this one, you will have joyful Christmas hours for many, many Christmases to come.

Chip Davis's Mannheim Steamroller hasn't lost any ground in the six years since their last Yuletide offering. Christmas Extraordinare is another innovative and heartfelt collection of seasonal treasures played on a combination of 18th-century instruments and modern-day synthesizers, drums, and electric guitars. While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre. For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing "Fum, Fum, Fum," a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's "Faeries" from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" an edgy tension. "Winter Wonderland" is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok. While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on "O Tannenbaum," respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. How do I chose?.......2007-08-04

I have this CD along with most of the other Christmas Cd's by Manheim. It is hard to pick, but I do believe this one is my very favorite!, especially after seeing them in concert last Christmas (2006). If you ever get the chance to see them, it is WELL worth every penny and you will appreciate thier CDs even more!! Especially this one!

Although, anyone should definately buy their first two albums from the 80s first, this is much calmer and more sophisticated. The first two albums are much more upbeat and inticing. This is still some beautiful Christmas music though. It's relaxed and possibly more suitable for the parents (not that children wouldn't like it) and creates a really great chilled out loving mood.

This was a pleasure to listen to again!It makes nice background yule-tyde music for the winter solitice holiday celebration.The birth of Jesus also represents the growing length of sunlight and rebirth of life.Also smartly included are Johnny Mathis (O Tannenbaum),University of Michigan Men's Glee Club,Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum Women's Choir, Almeda Berkey directing.They should continue to stick with Christmas standard classics and stay away from the Halloween tunes.This wintertime CD from Mannheim Steamroller is extraordinaire indeed!

I am a fan of Mannheim Steamroller and had high expectations for this CD. This is not quite as good as their older Christmas Cd's. It is ok but far from what it could have been.

Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17

Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!

A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11

This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.

My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).

Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.

The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.
