I just heard You're a Wolf on the radio. Wow, great song; catchy yet deep. Brings to mind Fastball & Toad the Wet Sprocket. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible debut EP!.......2007-05-11

Alex Church, the lead singer and founder of Sea Wolf, was a founding member of my favorite band, Irving. His songwriting skills are amazing, and this EP, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low, showcases his ability to write beautiful and engaging songs perfectly. My personal favorite is You're a Wolf, but every song he writes finds a way to burrow into my subconscious. While I lament the fact that he is no longer with Irving, I rejoice in the beauty that is Sea Wolf and am so thankful he is still bringing new songs into the world. I can't wait for the full album that will be released this year! In the meanwhile, I'm so excited to see Sea Wolf play live - they blew me away when I saw them play the noise pop festival.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully American.......2007-05-14

I've had a copy of this CD for years and love it. The power and optimism of the music is really quite remarkable... regardless of who or what is actually playing here. The arrangement of Swanee is light but rich with major chord trains like you just want to go marching around the room. And American In Paris leads you on a swaying, dischordy journey the deeper you go, as the narrative begins to trade delicacy for passion. (and I love renditions where you can hear the MUSIC and the instruments don't get in the way, like four-voice midi versions of Bach which reveal the eloquence).

When I listen to this CD now, and which is most surpring to me, I hear a profound pride in America - back "before." I play it when I have people over and we put burgers on the grill. This CD is the song of sitting in my back yard with the clouds blowing by and for the moment things feel OK.

"Before" - OK, there is no old perfect Amercia; but I'm thinking of the time before we learned to distill petroleum into toxic pollution, before pride meant vanity and thuggery, before hate-filled invective became public amusement, and before presidents went to war because it was good for business.

4 out of 5 stars A Gersh-winner.......2007-01-07

George Gershwin had a long association with the mechanical device known as the player piano. At the age of ten, Gershwin used a neighbor's pianola to teach himself how to play, by very slowly pumping the foot pedal that advanced the hole-punched rolls, and placing his fingers on the depressed keys. His parents were so impressed by his abilities they enrolled the boy in formal piano studies when he turned 13. Thus, an American genius was born.

The existing films of Gershwin (who died of a brain tumor at age 38 in 1937) show him to be a virtuoso at his instrument. His 1924 acoustic recording of Rhapsody In Blue (with the Paul Whiteman orchestra) is further evidence of this. But no film or recording has what is contained within the album GERSHWIN PLAYS GERSHWIN: THE PIANO ROLLS, and that is-- full fidelity range.

The CD comes in a standard jewel case packaged in a heavy paper slipcover. Biographical liner notes are included along with details on the rolls. The earliest performance in this set is from 1916, made when Gershwin was an 18-year-old song plugger. My favorites here are "Swanee," from 1920, and "An American In Paris," from 1933, which is undoubtedly one of the last significant piano rolls ever made.

Gershwin's dynamic performances are not in the least obscured by the few extra notes added to the piano rolls (such practice was standard in those days). Listening to these recordings is like sitting next to this brilliant man, observing his fingers fly over the keys as he plays some of his best work.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting... but I think I'd prefer a good Gershwin interpreter.......2006-05-14

Composers are not necessarily the best performers of their own work. A songwriter's songwriter like Jules Shear or Jimmy Webb comes to mind -- surely the best representations of their songs are on other artist's albums.

This album is charming in its own way -- a taste of the music and performance style of a bygone era. Someone complained that these rolls were edited. So what? I'm going to review the final product, now how it was made. Do you eat sausage? Ask not what's in it!

I like to listen to this CD in short bits -- a few songs at a time. For some reason I find it to be fatiguing if I listen for more than 20 minutes or so. I'm not absolutely sure why this is so. Possibly the meter is just a little too metronomic on many of the songs. This lends a "mechanical" quality to the performances.

Additionally, I felt that the dynamic range was restricted. The music does get louder and softer, because of the piano rolls themselves and because of the computer programming used to read the piano rolls -- the dynamics were deliberately adjusted by the record producers in some spots, if I read the liner notes correctly. And yet. And yet. Still these songs do not dynamically "breathe" fully in and out the way they ought to. I find this disappointing, but I think it has something to do with inherent limitations in piano roll recording technique. I'm guessing.

Taken for what it is, it is an interesting concept, and the sound quality is very pleasant. The performances are very good for piano rolls, but fall short of what a good interpreter could do. Take, for example, the Rhapsody in Blue from Woody Allen's Manhattan soundtrack. Listen specifically to the piano part -- the dynamics and variations in rhythm. This is not by any means the best performance of Rhapsody, but it is better than the Gershwin rolls.

2 out of 5 stars Gershwin's playing overated.......2006-04-09

After I heard this cd I bought Gershwin plays Gershwin on the naxos label which arn't piano rolls. Any pianist can tell that many of these rolls are heavily edited and can't be played by a pianists with two hands. On the naxos album that has some of these same songs Gershwin's actual playing doesn't sound very good. Many of Gershwins contempories such as James P. Johnson, Eubie Blake, Luckey Roberts and even Zez Confrey were much better pianists than he was, however they didn't have his melodic gifts as a composer. I would recommend Artis Whodhouse's
transcriptions of Jelly Roll Morton's piano rolls (on the same label) instead because most of those are exactly how he played them and in my opinion Morton was a better musician in every way than Gershwin.

5 out of 5 stars The jazzy Gershwin. What a CD!!!!!!!.......2006-02-23

I got this CD as a gift. I am all for the austrogerman post- romantic music and as imagined Gershwin is not my favourite composer. I know him from his best known works such as the 'Rhapsody", the 'American' and his great songs. This CD is a treasure as mentioned from other reviewers of this site. Gershwin full of passion, his music being jazzy to the very end and that great feeling you get after a great live performance is present all over the length of this 'treasure'. No question about the presence of the music. Not to be missed

Amazon.com essential recording

On Gershwin Fantasy, Joshua Bell's Stradivari embraces the lyrical spirit of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with more success than most vocalists. Accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, Bell's violin literally sings through "It Ain't Necessarily So," "Summertime," "I Got Rhythm," and "Love Is Here to Stay," while John Williams (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List) serves double duty as conductor and pianist on several tracks. Three Preludes employs the violin and piano transcription by Jascha Heifetz, a longtime Gershwin friend, and features Bell at his jazziest. Even Gershwin himself--well, the recording of a 1926 piano roll of the composer--joins the virtuoso on the swinging "Sweet and Low-Down." --Jason Verlinde

Great album with top director, London Phil. and Joshua Bell.... and Gershwin played like you never heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Bell & Gershwin.......2007-05-20

Two of my faves, George Gershwin and Joshual Bell -

Can't beat that!

Also, "Porgy" is a fave opera... so three out of three isn't bad!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-03-24

A very talented (to say the least) young musician playing the beautiful music of a very talented composer. I listen over and over again and especially like his rendition of "Embraceable You" and "But Not For Me" . . I'm a romantic!

5 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell's playing is exquisite.......2005-07-08

Joshua Bell's exquisite playing turns these arrangements into Gold. In the hands of Perlman or Shaham these arrangements would be pure shmaltz, but Bell's playing is of the highest caliber.

5 out of 5 stars S'Wonderful.......2004-10-20

Love it! I had heard of Josh Bell but never had purchased any of his music. I am a full fan now. This cd is wonderful. I am a Gershwin fan and have been for years. Bell breathes new life into the old classics and the result is breathtaking. His touch with the violin is beyound discription. He even plays with George in one cut, Sweet and Low Down. That alone is worth the price of the cd. Buy this cd and expect to be enchanted. It has been in my changer for weeks now, I can't get enough.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
    I'm fascinating.

    5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Crunk!!!.......2004-08-27

I've been a fan of crunk ever since they founded the music and Get Low is one of the top 5 crunk songs ever to hit the mainstream!!! With the Ying Yang Twins Lil Jon and the Eastside Boys got it locked and can't lose! This is an awesome party song and the remix has a nice touch of reggae to make it even more crunk! Busta Rhymes has a tight guest appearance in the remix and the video for the original and remix are tight!!!! If you are a fan of crunk then pick up this CD and all the other Lil Jon CDs, and the Ying Yang Twins CDs too!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars To the windows!.......2004-02-21

This is a track and a half. First time I heard it was courtesy of a friend of mine, kiki and I have not looked back since. As soon as the undeniably catchy beat starts, the song takes you onto a level of pure excitement with its' thumping bass and the suggestive but memorable lyrics. 'Get Low' is about having fun and remembering that you can laugh in this troubled world. It is always good to remember good times and with this song, it's hard to frown.

5 out of 5 stars club hit forever.......2004-02-07

this is one of the greatest club songs ever made. maybe it's the line, you know the line..."till the sweat rolls down my b****." maybe its that beat that makes you wanna stop whatever you're doing and shake it like a salt shaker (oops, wrong song), maybe it's lil jon. whatever it is, don't be fooled, it is not the lyrics. ying yang have never been anybody's andre, but it doesn't cool off the hotness of this song.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26

This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.

The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.

Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.

    Other stand-outs are:

The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
    Over the Rainbow

It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

      **1/2.

There are some minor changes made to this instant masterpiece that takes away from the original. The songs don't link together correctly after each track ends. "Other side of the game" is now the last song and it sounds odd because you can still hear the "Society is the menace" ending on the beginning of the track. The last two songs, "Alot of Thangz" and "Recognize Me" were cut shorter. JT, if you're going to rerelease a classic album, don't be lazy about it. I recommend fans to buy the original 1994 print used, if they can find it.

5 out of 5 stars JT The Bigga Figga's Masterpiece.......2006-09-21

"Thirty years from now, I'll still sound tight"-Black Nate on track 12 "Recognize Me".

SMC rereleased this classic underground Bay Area album that came out of the Get Low Records camp in the summer of 1994. The formula follows the format of Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". The independent CEO that can rap, produce and showcase the talent that's signed to his label. The outcome is thirteen tracks of street knowledge that incorporates muslim teachings, survival tactics, with hard lyrics over brilliant dark production that could be a soundtrack for horror/exploitation flicks.
The only difference with this version is that "Other Side of The Game" is the last track instead of "Recognize Me". I guess JT thought it made more sense because the message of the song and all three of the main group members appear on it, JT, San Quinn, and D-moe. Most of the albums that came out of Get Low Records in the early 90's are dope material but this record is the highlight of JT's genius. Listen to the first track, an instrumental simply titled "Allah and JT". You will be convinced.

      4 out of 5 stars CALIFORNIA GREATNESS.......2005-03-21

This is a pretty good CD. With Daz repping Southern California and JT repping Northern California. It has more of a Bay Area rap sound to it production wise but you can't go wrong with the West Coast sound and quality of all the beats. This is a gangster album with a lot of Northern California rappers guest starring and a spot by Kurupt. I wish Daz would have produced some tracks, but again, the production is very good. I don't think there is a track that I don't like. Independent Bubble f/ San Quinn and E-40, I'm A Boss f/ C-Bo, Yukmouth, & Dru Down, Sweet Love f/ Rappin' 4-Tay and Kurupt are my favorite tracks. If a true West Coast fan, get it for sure...

      5 out of 5 stars A TIGHT CD.......2005-02-28

FIRST OFF I WANNA SAY THAT I AM A BIG DAZ AND JT FAN. I'VE HEARD THERE LAST ALBUM "LONGBEACH TO FILLMORE" AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS ALBUM IS WAY BETTER. I HAVE TO SAY THAT I LUV 13 OUT OF THE 16 TRACKS SPECIALLY 1-8. IF U LIKE DAZ,JT,E-40,DRU DOWN,KURUPT,C-BO AND ALL OTHER WESTCOAST RAPPERS, THIS IS A MUST HAVE ALBUM. BUY IT, U WONT REGRET IT

Daz & JT are back again for their 2nd album together in less than 6 months. It has no classics but no bad songs, most are average with a couple being better. The beats are nothing special and are handled solely by Sean T, unfortunatley none by either Daz or JT!! Not every song has Daz & JT on it together and most are Daz and guests or JT and guests, and there are alot of guests. Has 4 unlisted tracks on it as well. A good album to have for fans of the 2 but for non-fans they've both done better work, even their "Longbeach 2 Fillmoe" album together is slightly better than this.

      #1 - 8 (f/ E-40 & San Quinn)
      #2 - 7 (f/ Yukmouth, Dru Down, C-Bo -- beat is from one of C-Bo's songs)
      #3 - 9
      #4 - 7 (f/ Sean T, San Quinn, Millo)
      #5 - 7 (f/ San Quinn)
      #6 - 7.5 (f/ Jay-Z, Kurupt, Memphis Bleek, and Beanie Sigel -- also on DJ Clue's "Professional 2")
#7 - 7.5 (f/ Mac Mall, Yukmouth & Sean T -- has same beat as the song by the same name on "Longbeach 2 Fillmoe")
      #8 - 8
      #9 - 7.5 (f/ mississippi mike & san quinn)
      #10 - 8 (f/ gamblaz & troopa)
      #11 - 7.5 (f/ Rappin' 4-tay & kurupt -- also on 4-tay's "Intorduction 2 Mackin")
      #12 - 8.5 (f/ killa tay, gamblaz, cosmo)
      #13 - 6.5
      #14 - 8 (about snitches)
      #15 - 8 (good beat)
      #16 - 7

      4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprised.......2001-12-05

I bought this album not knowing what to expect. I did, however, expect Daz to have been involved in the production of this album. I also expected it to feature Snoop. Not unreasonably, as it claims to feature Snoop on the front cover. The production is not by Daz, its by someone I've never heard of, and who's name I can't remember, but it is excellent, so no complaints there. I feel that this album gains nothing from the two Dogg Pound songs included, especially the one featuring Jay-Z, which can also be found on 'Tha Dogg Pound 2002'. Remove these tracks and the album flows nicely. Daz Dillinger is one of the best rappers around today. JT the Bigga Figga is also very good and sounds a bit like Xzibit. 'Game 4 Sale' features loads of other rappers who are previously unknown to me, but very good. This is an excellent West Coast album, and a nice mixture of familiar 'Daz', with unfamiliar.

5 out of 5 stars Way Too Tight For Human Consumption.......2001-07-01

This has to be the best album of the year 2001. Daz and JT hooked up some dope beats for some of the best rappers in the game. I loved how they added Mac Mall to the song "Game For Sale." The great tracks paved the way for head nodding. I really liked hearing San Quinn on many of the tracks. I wished we would have heard from Kurupt on more than the "Change The Game" remix, which happens to be TRACK 6. Though all and all, I could listen to this album for a full day and not get tired of it. The production was much too ill, I am telling you. This is the best album of 2001.
