Album Description
He's a lot like the 16-year-old boy living in the house next door to you: one minute he's five-foot-seven, the next he's 6'1. One minute he's a cute little boy trying to dribble a basketball, the next a superstar point guard. One minute he's ducking under the covers pleading for five more minutes of shut-eye, the next he's racing through a day full of recording, performances and interviews. With his easy-going demeanor and schoolboy charm, Chris Brown could easily be somebody that you know. With his incredible voice and a debut cd laced with clever lyrics, hypnotic tracks and impeccable vocals, he's someone that the world will soon know. Chris isn't part of some A-list producer's camp. Nor does he hail from any of those famous urban music hubs like NYC, Compton or the ATL. Straight from Tappahannock, VA --- population 2000 -- Chris Brown proves that real talent, persistence and charisma still have a place in the music industry. One listen to Chris' 16-year-old voice and you're tempted to draw comparisons: Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell, and Usher. But listen a bit longer and those comparisons begin to dissipate as it becomes clear that, while Chris certainly channels the creativity of those who have come before him, he definitely has a style, a flavor and a place in music that are all his own. His debut CD Young Love takes us on a journey through the malls, parties and teen hangouts as Chris covers a variety of subjects: A girl that he's dying to hit the dance floor with. A girl that's got another man. A girl that has him totally and completely head over heels in love. It's an album about young boys, young girls -- Young Love. In selecting songs for Young Love, Chris said he simply relied on his own sense of what was hot and what was real for him and his peers. "When I hear these songs, I feel something. I know I can relate to them. I take myself out of the artist box and I become an audience member and I critique myself." Chris got his musical initiation early on, inspired by what he refers to as the "eclectic" taste of his parents and soaking in the sounds of his favorites: Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Anita Baker, and Aretha Franklin. But, like most young boys, Chris was soon drawn to rap and was certain that he would be the first emcee to put Tappahannock on the map. "I was rapping," he recalls. "I didn't understand that I could sing until I was like 11 or 12. My mom heard me singing around the house and she said, 'What are you doing? You really can sing!' So then I started going to school and singing to the girls." By the time he was 13, Chris realized that his voice was more than just a chick magnet. And so did his mother as he began to hook his son up with various producers. "When I went in and started working, there were ups and downs but I loved it and I knew I wanted to do it for the rest of my life." Chris may still be a lot like the boy who lives next door to you. But not really. You'll see.

AGE AINT NOTHING BUT A NUMBER !.......2007-07-09
There is a new star in town and all male R&B singers need to be on the look out for this newcomer who has been taking the music industry by storm.
His name is Chris Brown and already, he's being smashing up the charts with his single "Run It" featuring Juelz Santana of the RocaFella Label.
He may be only 16 years of age, but his vocal flow and dancing moves is out of this world. His signature style has already being compared to that of Grammy winners like Usher and Justin Timberlake.
Being the newest member on Jive Records, this Virginia native had the opportunity to work with producer Scott Storch, who helped him in recording more than fourteen tracks for his debut self titled album "Chris Brown."
Brown opens his album by first paying homage to his native state, followed by his smashing hit "Run It", where he sings about challenging female dancers to see if they can run the dance floor without their man(s) on their side like he does. /Is ya man on the flo? / If he ain't ----/ let me know/ let me see if you can run it run/ girl indeed I can run it run it/.
"Run It" is followed by his third track "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" which people already are speculating to be his next single from the album. On this track, he harmonically sing his way in expectation of getting a young lady's attention across a room in a night club. /I don't know your name but excuse me miss/ I saw you from across the room/ and I got to admit that you got my attention/ you are making me want to say yo/.
"Gimme That" is another hot song on the album. The tempo of the song is very fast with its blend of ballads and has that ability to move the most timid person to stomp their feet or bump their heads to its sound woofing beat.
Being that, this is his first album, Brown collaborated with a mix of veteran artists like Noah, Jermaine Dupri and Bow Wow to help spice up his album.
Brown may be a teenager but his album is already attracting worldwide music lovers of all ages. The beats are very catchy and the lyrics contain no profanity making it a perfect album for any family. The album has very creative titles, like titles that have already being used by other artists and has being known to be a hit, like Jay-z's "Excuse Me Miss" and this album's "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)".
Although the thought of a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist" may sound too early at this point, the album sounds promising; at the rate its first single has being jumping up the Billboard chart into being number one for the fourth consecutive week.
The recording is available in a conventional CD format and its available in all music stores.
Chris Brown, a force to be reckoned with.......2007-06-08
This CD was the bomb! For a 16 year old his music is worth listening to. I was afraid it would be too bubble gum but any adult could and will enjoy this CD. There's no doubt that we're gonna hear a lot from him. Can't wait for his next CD.

The Future Of R&B He Ain't, But He Definitely Has Skills.......2007-03-10
Chris Brown's self-titled album is something that kinda slipped by me last year. He had a few hits but I think Jive spent a lot of time marketing the singles and not the album. The songs were just decent on the radio and I really didn't care to pick up the album until my iTunes playlist started to play "Gimme That" and just thought "I wonder how good his album would be?" Now I'm kinda perplexed by some of these earlier reviews. I scrolled through a good amount of them and seem to be ridiculously mixed. A ton of 5 star reviews saying he's the future of R&B (that's definitely not true) and one star reviews that just hate that he sounds even 10% of Usher. (I only thought "Run It!" sounded like Usher). Anyhow, I decided to try Chris Brown's CD. He's definitely got a good voice on him, and this album is slickly produced and has a good 90s R&B feel with a few scattered club bangers. The only actual issue are the lyrics, which can get very cheesy at times. But that put aside, this is a decent male R&B CD that doesn't try too hard but still has enough tracks going for it.
Although this is an R&B album, I actually found Chris doing better on the up-tempo songs. Yes, "Run It!" (regardless of the amount of people wanting to admit it) sounds very much like Usher's "Yeah!", but that's not to say it's undeniably catchy with its hook "Let me see if you can run it, run it" and a needed Juelz Santana rap line (although some versions of the song don't have the rap?). Back in '05 this song was huge and I was sure loving it for the time it was big. But the other (yes the other) single "Gimme That", in my opinion, is possibly the best song on the album. The beat is absoultely and insanely catchy and hits the bass hard, and has a fun hook line, Even if the lyrics can get monotonous when Chris starts to talk about how much money he has, its production and Chris's rapping flows so well. Other decent up-tempo songs include "What's My Name", a decent song and it's without a doubt that it sounds a lot like some songs from Usher's Confessions (the dreaded comparison, but it is true). It's a bit more uptempo and is nicely jazzed up. There's nothing special about the song--but it sure is relieving after "Winner". Also "Is This Love" scores as a bit more hard-hitting with the bass drums (reminds me of a slower version of Will Smith's "Switch") than the other songs and seems to take a techno-ish vibe; which isn't necessary a bad thing. The lyrics are pretty average fair--Chris is pretty much asking himself love questions which gets boring after repetitive listening, but its at least tolerable.
Chris also has a lot of very solid R&B on the disc. The hit song "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" being an obvious standout, with thumpin-hitting beats and a laid back sound. Chris's vocals are good here, and has decent lyrics which follow a story where Chris spots a lady and sings the title. "Young Love" is proven to be a good slice of jazzed up R&B; nicely produced with (I don't want to say this but must) Stevie Wonder feel to it. The lyrics lean toward the cheesy side a bit ("We ain't 21, this is young love", someone called Kraft on me) but Brown's voice is like always, soothing and layers completely flat on the tracks. Also "Just Fine" is a solid mid-tempo, soothing R&B song with a guitar instrumental to make it a bit more full, and still leans on the 70's sound. The lyrics are actually okay, and although Chris Brown starts rapping a bit, he actually doesn't sound bad (Akon another story). And Chris's "Thank You" to the Lord isn't bad, but it's nothing amazing and does not help nor hurt the album.
However, the album is definitely not without some questionable tracks. "Ya Man Ain't Me" is one of the filler tracks to my ears. The production is decent and kinda gives you the vibe of Ciara's "Other Chicks", but the lyrics are completely lame. ("I want you to see just how much your man ain't me"...what???) Chris's voice also sounds a bit odd, as if he were uncomfortable on the track and sings off-key occassionally. "Winner" gets even worse and could possibly be the album's worst offender. Somehow Chris's girlfriend is winning as if she won a car race. Honestly, can you get any lower than that? (Maybe Christina Milian could) And it even makes things more confusing when he can't decide if his girlfriend has won (in past tense) or is going to win (future tense), or if he's using them both chronologically throughout the song. "Poppin" absoultely sucks. Flat out. Chris Brown is actually more annoying instead of the lyrics--he starts to yell the last word of the line ("We gonna get CRUNK!"). It works well in Lil' Jon's "Get Low" but not so much the slowest song on the disc. Not to mention when he is singing, for some reason it sounds like he isn't even trying. And "Say Goodbye" is boring, with a looping and incomplete sounding production. Chris Brown's singing can't even save the cheesy lyrics "There's never a right time to say goodbye."
Overall, Chris Brown's self-titled is a good CD and very decent for a debut. Chris has got a good voice, a great production team, and an overall above average CD with few bad tracks. No, its no where near the future of R&B, but this is good for what its worth and should stand some time before something huge hits the earth. 4 stars.

Album Description
Simplified features both stripped-down versions of Simply Red's classic songs and fresh recordorm some material with only a piano as accompaniment. "What struck me when I listened back to the performance was just how much the song leapt out at you in those circumstances," he says. Classic Simply Red songs such as "Something Got Me Started," "Sad Old Red," "Smile," and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" are reinvigorated thanks to these sophisticated, even jazzy, new arrangements. One of the group's most popular hits, "Holding Back The Years," is beautiful and still lush; recognizable, but with an added timeless maturity. Other songs featured on Simplified include "More," "Your Mirror," "Fairground," and "For Your Babies."
The lead-off track and first single from Simplified is the irresistible, upbeat, and distinctly Latin-flavored "Perfect Love." The Cuban vibe of this sensual new song is amplified by the vocals of Havana-based singer Danae. A Latin feeling runs throughout Simplified, inspired by the band's recent visit to Cuba. In fact, Simply Red is the first English pop band to have played in Havana, as they appeared at the landmark Gran Teatro early in 2005.
Simplified is the follow-up to 2003's highly successful Home, which sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. That release helped push the band to a level of over 50 million albums sold since forming 21 years ago. Although Simply Red's lineup of musicians has rotated throughout the years, the one constant has been Mick Hucknall, one of the finest male vocalists Britain has ever produced, and also one of its most accomplished, melodic, and prolific pop songwriters.

What A Treat To Have Made This Album.......2007-05-18
Stripped down jazzy slower versions of old songs from The SImply Red catalog. Fans LOVE things like this, I LOVE this album, perfect for a rainy day alone with some songs that are like old friends. But older, wiser, mature, just wonderful. I Simply LOVE the stripped and simplified version of "Fairground", I love the orginial dearly...the sad slow melody over the Goodmen's drumming. But here it is sung as a ballad. This could have been an old standard that someone like Ella Fitzgerlad would have sung. can't say enough good things aabout this album, it is called "Simplified", but should be called "Timeless". This is the Greatest Hits for the fans, hits ethought. Again, rain falling outside makes this even better. Then again, we are all SR fans here, give it a try.
Great!!.......2007-03-26
The music has a variation of sounds and themes extremely diverse and exciting. This is a great CD -a fan can certainly appreciate the voice and themes, a new listener will turn into a fanatic right after this.
Excellent choice.
Wonderful Album.......2007-01-22
If you love Mick Hucknall's voice as much as I do you'll be glad you bought this album. He does some of his old songs in a slightly different way which is so interesting, and the new songs are wonderful. Simply Red is simply great!
Simplified and stripped down.......2006-09-06
Simply Red goes easy listening on this album. Every track is either a re-recording or the original master minus percussion. We hear a piano plus a string ensemble on many of these tracks. This is an ideal album for easy listening music fans, especially senior citizens who can't stand the sound of hard rock or heavy metal. Marty Balin clone Mick Hucknall, the band's frontman gives fans a nice collection of hit songs in subtle form.
Hucknel just doesn't stop.......2006-05-27
Simplified brings some new along with old favorites. Simply Red "smoothed" out old classics. The new material is just as good as the 20 year old tunes. A must for any Simply Red fan. And a cd that new listeners will enjoy.

The tale of a mother who poses as her son's estranged father in letters, yet eventually has to enlist a stranger to play the role, director Shona Auerbach's intimate indie became a film festival perennial. Given the movie's tearjerker tendencies, its musical score becomes an even more crucial component of its deft, if relatively non-manipulative dramaturgy. Young composer Alex Heffes more than rises to the occasion, providing a delicate score fueled by spare, elegant piano and emotionally-longing string arrangements. Heffes work here mines the same intimately scaled, soulfully resonant vein as Rachel Portman's Oscar-nominated music for Lasse Hallstrom's Ciderhouse Rules and Chocolat, a skillful musical tack that's openly emotional, yet seldom cloying. The contributions of modern rockers Clarksville (the buoyant "Everyone Will Have Their Day" and more intimate ballad "Reprise") and singer-songwriters Obi and Jesse Harris organically mesh with Heffes' score in a way that's all to rare in an era where pop songs often contribute little more than marketing shuck to film projects. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
My Dear, Dear Frankie.......2007-08-06
I enjoy discovering music from around the world and often find that film soundtracks can offer a convenient intro. From the first scene in Dear Frankie, I was completely drawn in by the delicate balancing of narration and the haunting musical score.
Uhhh... It's Ok..........2007-05-01
I really loved the movie and especially little Frankie. There where three songs that just stuck in my head for weeks, so I bought the CD... unfortunatly out of the three songs, only one was on the CD... I was alittle dissapointed but overall it is a good CD. I really like Jesse Harris. He is the best on the whole CD.
Key songs are missing.......2007-02-21
After watching "Dear Frankie" on cable several times, I decided to buy it and the soundtrack album. I did not read the detailed list of songs before buying. Although the soundtrack is good for what it is, I was disappointed that the song "Delicate" by Damien Rice was not included. Nor was the song about the "white horse" that was sung twice during the movie, once by Lizzie and once by the club singer. It would have been nice also to have the "Macarena" song which was in the movie.
Nice mix of score and soundtrack.......2007-02-07
This album is nice because it has all the score music along with all the other music played in the movie on one CD. The "Dear Frankie Main Title" is especially nice to have. I bought this CD for my sister for Christmas, but now the whole family wants to listen to it. I would recommend it for anyone that liked the movie!
Beautiful, sensitive, sad and hopeful. .......2007-01-21
I stumbled upon this quiet little movie and feel like I've discovered a wonderful jewel. I was immediately enamored by the soundtrack and worked hard to purchase it right away. The music along with a few dialogue excerpts communicate much of the emotion and power of the movie. There's one song that was, regrettably, not on the soundtrack but I recommend be added to the CD or your collection: Damien Rice, "Delicate" from the "O" album. The music communicates such a sense of loss and longing while maintaining just enough of a glimmer of hope that you end up feeling alright.
It's a wonderful soundtrack and definitely worth the purchase.

Joined by bassist Christian McBride and drummer Peter Erskine in an acoustic-trio format, pianist David Benoit stitches together a modest but appealing ode to the music of Vince Guaraldi and the cartoon character that affected both of their careers. Half the compositions that make up Here's to You appear on Guaraldi's 1964 television soundtrack A Boy Named Charlie Brown. It's actually Guaraldi's original trio you hear during the opening 50 seconds of "Linus and Lucy," until Benoit's threesome splices in its own improvisation. A bit brief at 42 minutes, the package is nevertheless nicely understated and affectionately played. Some listeners would rather not have a holiday selection at the album's midpoint ("Christmas Time is Here," with harmonies by gospel act Take 6), but the intrusion is minor. Other guests include Chris Botti (adding a tasteful muted trumpet to a Benoit composition, "Linus Tells Charlie"), Michael Brecker (tenor sax on the swinging "Freda"), and Al Jarreau on the concluding "Happiness." --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
Some of the greatest musicians make a not-so-great album.......2005-10-24
It's always strange for me to hear reproductions of a work where the original needs no improvement. I have tremendous respect for these musicians, and yes, they play some great solos over the changes, but the album is basically just a recreation of tracks from the EXCELLENT Vince Guaraldi Trio records. My personal favorite is "Linus tells Charlie" which features some very sensitive trumpet from Chris Botti, but otherwise this records is just a little off, and I find myself listening only to the originals these days. The original band with Vince on piano just grooves better, and although from a recording perspective is sonically slightly inferior (they were probably mixing for TV) something about those original performances seem more emotional...is it just nostalgia?
If you are looking for some FANTASTIC recreations of old TV music (e.g. little rascals, looney tunes, etc...) by newer bands, check out the Beau Hunks' material. Superb playing and excellent attention to classic details and nuances of the original scores.
Cheesy-looking, but a truly great album.......2003-04-30
Being a long-time fan of Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" strip and of jazz, I was very happy to receive this CD as a gift. I had never heard of David Benoit, but after listening to this album over and over, I can say that he is a wonderful, wonderful piano player.
While this album, while looking at it, looks cheesy and very much like it's children's music, Benoit's piano trio (with Christian McBride on bass and Peter Erskine on drums, in case you have any doubts of the swinging-ness of this record) really has created a great jazz album and a fitting tribute to Vince Guaraldi and his music. Many of the cuts have special guests, too.
The album opens with (what else?) the always-recognized "Linus and Lucy," played beautifully by the trio and with Guaraldi's original piano track dubbed in. The trio also adds in a new, funky backbeat-style section in the middle.
"Charlie Brown Theme" is lesser-known, a medium-tempo song. While it is not my favorite, I still enjoy the calmness of it and Benoit's solo is pretty swinging.
"Pebble Beach" is an up-tempo bossa nova number with Marc Antoine joining the group on guitar. The tune is very catchy and it's fun to listen to. Good solos by Benoit and Antoine.
"Linus Tells Charlie," a slower tune, is given a beautiful texture with the addition of the muted trumpet sounds of Chris Botti. A very relaxing tune.
"Frieda" is one of my favorites, and it features Michael Brecker on tenor sax (he's pretty good, don't you think?). Killer solo by Brecker and the amazing chops of Benoit are featured here on this fun tune.
The gospel vocal group Take 6 is featured on Guaraldi's (and Lee Mendelson's) classic Christmas ode, "Christmastime is Here." A beautiful arrangement that makes you wish for winter.
"Getting Ready," the seventh cut, is the only song on the CD written by Benoit. It's a pretty straightforward tune that's more rock-ish than the rest. It grooves really hard, though, a fine example of the togetherness of this trio.
"Blue Charlie Brown" is a simple blues in F with Russell Malone on guitar. This is also the only tune where Erskine takes a solo (1 chorus before the out-head).
"Red Baron" is another one of my favorites. Marc Antoine reappears on guitar on this beautiful straight-8ths song. Great solos by all, and this song will stay with you forever, which is not a bad thing. Thanks to Guaraldi for a beautiful tune.
The closer, Clark Gesner's "Happiness" from the musical "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown!" is punctuated with the soothing, swooning voice of Al Jarreau. A beautiful song and a beautiful arrangement to end a beautiful album with.
Whether you are 3 or 103 years old (or anywhere in between and beyond), this CD is for you. Peanuts fan, jazz fan, music fan...it's all here. A wonderful tribute to the memory of Vince Guaraldi--and great background music for reading the daily strip.
Nostalgic Kitsch on a Theme of Guaraldi.......2001-11-30
...or, how to make a quick buck on someone elses stuff. Or, to summarize with a trite phrase, "Can't Beat the Real Thing". The legendary Guaraldi wrote jazz that is akin to American culture, and is loved by all. This translation takes something that was perfect and takes it down the other side of the peak. Isn't it enough to enjoy the original works without embellishing it with some popular anecdotes? Would you buy Steely Dan from anyone but Fagen? It just misses the mark, and screws up a good thing.
I lied....and I MUST confess my sin!.......2001-06-25
I purchased this CD under the "lie" of telling my wife that I wanted it for our 3 year old daughter...secretly though, it was for me! LOL.... I get the feeling that the fact that I listen to it so much has given my sin away to her, but yet she still says nothing! I have to admit though, if I was going to use a 3 year old to GET a CD...this was the one to use that on. In all seriousness, this CD is fully enjoyable and as far as tributes go, this is one of the best I've heard. This one takes you back to your childhood if "Peanuts" was a part of that! Great one!
Heard it and Had to Have it.......2001-06-06
I was sitting in a cafe in Seoul, S. Korea and heard this CD...liked it so much that I asked to see the CD case. I did not recognize the tunes as Charlie Brown standards, even though I grew up on the TV specials in the US. Just thought it was an outstanding jazz album....great dinner music, too. I have now added it to my collection.

Cross-over jazz equivalent of classical art song.......1999-01-09
This CD is magnificent. I've been listening almost non-stop for two weeks, in-between my more usual fare of high-art classical music (mostly baroque & chamber music, renaissance, operatic). Frederica von Stade has a rich sexy voice and, although a world-famous opera diva, she understands jazz rhythms and how to bend a note. Chris Brubeck knows jazz backward and forward (some of the songs here are Dave Brubeck's, his dad, and some are his own). There isn't a clinker in the set, though some take more listenings to really get. This CD takes cross-over operatic-to-jazz singing to the level of Art Song. Hear von Stade parody Rosenkavalier in "raggy waltz" and the tender poignancy of the Mexican song arranged by Dave Brubeck and sung in lovely Spanish by von Stade. And catch her singing a duet with her teenage daughter. I'd rather listen to this CD than German lieder any day.

SIMPLY THE BEST.......2001-12-28
Have been fortunate to attend 2 Chris Brubeck concerts and have been a big fan ever since. Just need more CD's please.
This recording is simply thrilling. I highly recommend you add it to your collection and tell all your friends. Once you hear his music you are hooked and what a wonderful addiction.
Here's hoping we hear a lot from Chris and his friends.
Bach for More.......2000-08-03
I bought this CD after hearing it on my local NPR station. I relly like the arrangements of Bach's works--not predictable--and I was certain that I was listening to a Bach orchestration at the time.
A real added treat to this CD are the compositions of Chris Brubeck. This guy can really write for orchestra. His bass trombone concerto has the gusto of a Bernstein Overture. Also his arrangement of Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo" is incredible. Bach to Brubeck certainly makes the case for an enjoyable listening experience. I have turned 5 of my friends on to this CD already.
Brubeck: Bass Trombone Concerto, etc/Brubeck, Crofut,et al.......2000-03-31
This CD shows that the musical talent of Dave Brubeck continues on to the next generation. This CD has a wonderful mix of classical Bach, beautifully played by the London Symphony Orchestra Bill Crofut, Joel Brown, & Chris Bruebeck, and an eclectic mix of modern American music.
The arrangements of the traditional Bach pieces by Chris Brubeck are wonderfully done. The beautiful guitar playing by Joel Brown brings a new element to this classic music.
Finally there is a Concerto for one of my favorite instruments! The Concerto for Bass Trombone is a unique and wonderfully new and differnt piece of classical music. The masterful playing by Chris Brubeck spotlights his talent not only as a composer but as a gifted musician.
This CD will take you from the glories of Bach to the new and exciting music being made by the 2nd generation of Brubecks.
We think this grooves!.......2000-03-18
The multi-talented Chris Brubeck has really impressed me with this outing. I didn't know Chris before this disc, although I did know Dave, and now I'd like to hear more from Chris! This is a must-have for all classical and jazz fans. The serenity of the Bach arrangements are perfectly orchestrated, and the bass trombone concerto is a masterful composition. And the way the Blue Rondo a la Turk holds back just to open up is frightfully sinister! Buy this one!
