5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars "performances light up the heavens ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus".......2005-06-25

This reissue originally released in 1997 was on the top American Billboard Charts, ranked number #13...dramantic in every respect "CINEMA CHORAL CLASSICS", featuring the CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS and their leader David Temple (Choir Master), world renown with a strong reputation for hitting the mark everytime...for additional listening pleasure THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC, conducted by Paul Bateman, Kenneth Alwyn and as always Nic Raine these gentleman are the icing on the cake...for additional listening pleasure we have the classical favorite "CARMINA BURANA"(1981-Carl Orff), the dark tale of Camelot...now that's just for openers.

Silva Screen Records takes us on a journey of adventure "CONAN:THE BARBARIAN"(1981-Basil Poledouris), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and resounding singers with brilliant orchestration...then we have two selections from "THE MISSION"(1986-Enno Morricone), beautiful choir blends emotion, enhanced by haunting themes and counter melodies..."THE LION IN WINTER"(1988-John Barry), a favorite among Barry fans, this arrangement and rendition has it all...next we travel with helmet in hand(with horns included) with "THE VIKINGS"(1959-Mario Nascimbene), if it's action you crave, then this Kirk Douglas epic is a real winner, but Nascimbene's score adds color and breaths life into this tale of the Viking God "Odin"...another remake leaps to the screen with "HENRY V"(1989-Patrick Doyle), one can only marvel at Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film, but the music from a solo to full choir gives you goose bumps...the CD is excellent, recorded in Dolby Surround sound is completely mesmerizing and outstanding...orchestration, every intstument, every voice, crystal clear...for all the "film-score-buffs", do not pass this one up...needs to be in your every growing collection (nuff said)...gotta love it!

Hats off to Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman and Nic Raine conducting the world renown CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA...plus James Fitzpatrick(album producer)...Reynold da silva(executive producer)...and a special thanks to David Temple(Choir Master) and our favorite-dynamic choir that made all of this possible...THE CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS!

5 out of 5 stars 4-4-5.......2006-06-11

I can think of no better way of dispelling any bad vibes incurred by Fox's execrable remake of 'The Omen' than returning to Jerry Goldsmith's superlative original scores.

THE OMEN: Oscar winning, Ave Santani is the biggy (if shorty.) The rest gets old quickly and the chanting fits better in context of the film, a drawback with a lot of soundtrack releases.

DAMIEN: OMEN 2: I've always wanted to get my hands on the main theme of this, with it's frog chorus backing (at least that's what I always called it. Don't go near the pond!) The rest as above works better watching the film.

THE FINAL CONFLICT: Considering the brief, the composer may be forgiven for writing a sweeping, biblical score more fitting to an old sword and sandals epic rather than the dour and cheap knock-off in which it appeared so incongruous. Although it unbalanced the movie, it stands out the best as a stand-alone piece and is arguably the masterpiece of the three. A portentous classic.

5 out of 5 stars A really nice Cd to scare the American Idol fools........2005-10-21

This box set is really great. Every song from the first track on disc one, to the last track on disc 3 is really good to listen to.

I have a story to tell you.
I invited American Idol singers Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia Barino over to my house for dinner. Needless to say, I didn't like them at all. I asked them what music they'd like to listen to, and Kelly Clarkson said, "Breakaway," and Fantasia said, "Free Yourself." I said,"Alright, here we go." We were all in agreement, and so I went to play the Cd of their choice. However, I came up with a really, really nasty plan. I wasn't going to fall for them one single bit! So, I planned to do my own desires. As a result, I got this box set, and I decided which of the Cd's I should play. It was then that I made a choice. I decided to play the first Omen Cd.

Boy oh boy, it was absolutely wonderful. When I played the first Cd for the two idols, I couldn't resist going along with the music. When the first track began, both Kelly and Fantasia started to cry. As the Cd progressed, the music was just too much for them to endure. They screamed, cried out, begging for the music to end, but I ignored them. Letting the music do it's work. I also couldn't resist laughing at their tearful begging for mercy. The song "Killer Storm" was when it became too much for these idol fools. By the end of the track called, "The Alter," both of them were screaming and crying so much, that they both had to be carried off to mental institutions to die.

To make a long story short, I also did the same thing to Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul. This time I played the second disc, and the same thing happened to them, and I said, "That's what you get for judging non-talented fools, and destroying music." When I said those things, I proceeded to take a whip and flog them until they couldn't stand it any onger. If this Cd set is what you want to use to punish those American Idol fools like I did, then this Cd is for you. Ave Satani, versus christus, Ave Satani. Buy this(...) if you dare.

Jerry Goldsmith's chilling soundtrack music for Richard Donner's 1976 Antichrist-themed thriller The Omen was very nearly the score that never was; an unusual, last-minute budget extension was granted solely to secure the composer's services. That decision turned out to be one of the wisest the studio could make. Goldsmith's music would go on to score him his first Oscar ® and a Grammy award and become the crucial thematic glue that held the entire Omen trilogy together. Standing the traditional requiem form on its head, Goldsmith in essence created Satanic liturgical music. As chorally ominous as Orff's Carmina Burana, yet infused with the composer's own compelling sense of drama and color, The Omen instantly became both a genre classic and one of the musician's greatest achievements. Varese's 25th anniversary edition has largely resequenced the track order to match the film and expanded it by nearly a third with seven previously unreleased cues. These new tracks add dimensions of both pastoral calm and mounting suspense, making the familiar "Ave Satani" theme even darker and more spine tingling by contrast. Edition producer Robert Townson's detailed new notes also carefully place each cue in its cinematic and musical context. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars THE SOUNDTRACK OF NIGHTMARES.......2007-05-29

This CD should come with a DISCLAIMER!

Without exception, this is the most chilling, soul shattering, truly, deeply, profoundly disturbing musical composition ever written. What an ordeal to subject one's nerves to!

"Ave Satani" must have shocked the hell out of the audience when they performed it at the Academy Awards! And, as a previous reviewer very astutely noted, every single note of this score deserved the Academy Award.

And for the benefit of those of you unfamiliar with Latin:

Sanquis bibimus, Corpus edimus
Prode corpus Satani
Ave, Ave Versus Christus
Ave, Ave Satanti

We drink blood, We eat flesh
Bring forth the body of Satan
Hail Antichrist
Hail Satan

The other version runs:

Sanquis Vivimus, Corpus venimus
Prode Cantus Satani

Blood, we are alive, Body we are coming
Sing forth the incantation of Satan

[There are differing schools of thought as to what the actual Latin text is -one concert version actually exchanged "versus Christus" with "Jesu Christus"!]

Musically powerful and very effective, the score is one of the most original and polished ever written for a film -or the concert hall. It's essentially a chamber piece for small orchestra and mixed chorus, though recent recordings have used larger orchestras and even more varied vocal arrangements.

This newly remastered and restored version is a prized addition to any film music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing more needs to be said except . . ........2007-02-02

. . . this is the most frightening, superlative music ever written for a film.

5 out of 5 stars The Omen Soundtrack.......2006-06-30

Far, far better then the remakes soundtrack. This one still gives me chills up and down my spine! The new one, PU!

5 out of 5 stars The Omen; orchestral score.......2005-10-24

If you are looking for really dark satanic orchestra music, you found it. Lots of choral chanting by deep voices and women vocals too. I loved the score for "Bless the Child" and then I found this. Can not say enough good things about this. The song at the end has vocals and was not used in the movie. It sucks, but it is thankfully the last track so in no way should that stop you from buying this score

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Chilling, and Perfectly Composed.......2004-08-10

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, but the undeniably most impactive score that I've ever heard under his name is this CD.
The 1976 success of Richard Donner's masterpeice is without a doubt 86% due to Jerry Goldsmith's requiem-stylized suites.

The tracks that stand out in this lister's brain are "Ave Satani," (once you hear in on the movie track, it will be instantly engraved in your mind.) "The Dog's Attack," enormously beacuse, when I hear it, my mood changes--as does with any music I listen to) and, course, who can forget the pressing motif in "the Altar" (I love it, and so will you.)

So, if your looking to listen to a killer score that will blow you out of your seat, slip this sweet little CD in and prepare yutrself for this beautifully remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of Jerry Goldsmith score to one of the most memmorable films of our time--THE OMEN

5 out of 5 stars Cameo's 1979 Album is Funk On The One!.......2002-09-21

This is one of Cameo's most essential albums-probably one of the best they ever made. It has all the makings of the perfect old school funk album. It's filled to the brim with energetic jams, funky dance grooves,finger-pickin'style guitar, throbbin' bass lines, and of course a strong brass section and synth layers on the top. This album is a nostalgic one, with classic jams such as the groove-intoxicating R&B hit, "I Just Want To Be", the rhythmic "Energy","The Rock", and the slow-jam "Sparkle". Plus, it also has a remake of "Find My Way", which is even more of a disco song than the first one; Since there was this big disco craze in 1979, it made sense for cameo to do this song and it fitted this album fine cuz it was in touch with the time. At one time or another, every funk band experimented with disco.
They don't make good albums like this anymore. I have this on LP and I think this album would be a great addition everybody's funk collection. It's very necessary that you purchase this album today!

5 out of 5 stars My first Cameo Album that I still love.......2002-03-17

I remember sneaking out of my parent's house to buy this album in 1979. This album shows why Cameo is a Funk Legends group. I love "I just want to be" and "Sparkle". This album is still slammin' and you must get it.

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2002-02-12

It was released back in 1979 while disco craze was at the peak of it's popularity. I miss those days really.
'I Just Want To Be' sounds still great to me with it's thumping bass and groove line. 'Sparkle' is a very good example of Cameo's ballad side. Energy, New York and the rest are classic Cameo trademarks. Consequently, I recommend this album to all the die-hard Cameo fans.

4 out of 5 stars Good Disc.......2000-03-18

Sparkle is still the song.that's one of the tightest slow Jams over the past 25 years.I just want to be is so Funky.all the trademark Cameo Sounds are all here.it's a good disc.

5 out of 5 stars A True 80's Metal Classic !.......2007-05-16

First of all, I'd like to apologyze about my bad english, but I hope to be understood.
This is one of my favourite metal records. Powerfull, straight and honest. Not speed, thrash, black or speed metal. Just Heavy Metal. Since the first to last track. In my opinion, Kill on Sight, Holy Martyr, Teeth of the hydra and Termination are the highlights. But the other tracks also deserve to be listen to.
If you are fan of bands like Manowar, Liege Lord, Savage Grace and Armored Saint you have to be this album ! You won't regret !

5 out of 5 stars The Metal Classic you've probably never heard..........2004-01-17

Where do I start with this incredible album? Perhaps by saying it is arguably the best album in the Metal Blade catalogue, which is quite a statement! Originally released in 1986, it had the benefit of that label's joint venture with Capitol Records (recorded in the music giant's famous studio and marketed using its vast distribution channels). The Oklahoma-bred, L. A.-based band had just left the wake of an acclaimed, if modest-selling album ("Warning of Danger") and it seemed that guitarist-songwriter Kenny Powell felt he had something to prove because this album has no weak spots that I can discern. The songs are powerful and well-executed. (Drummer Steve Wittig and bassist Jody Henry play with Pro-Tools tightness, years before anyone knew what Pro-Tools was; Powell's leads sear and riffs crush.) Singer J. D. Kimball's vocals get the proper sonic treatment this time and he sings with the conviction of a man whose future was truly uncertain. (In fact, he left the band shortly after the support tour for this album and went unaccounted for nearly the next 20 years, ostensibly fighting a battle with the bottle. Heartbreakingly, Powell didn't know what had happened to his former bandmate until the news of Kimball's death in Ocober 2003.) Some standout tracks include the title track, "S.R.B." (a stirring insrtrumental inspired by the Challenger shuttle accident), and "Teeth of the Hydra". Tragically, this album with seemingly everything going for it, did't get the support and exposure it could have. Powell was a true hero to the genre, but power metal was never that well-received in the States. The band didn't even tour Europe or Asia (The album actually charted in Germany and Japan based on word-of-mouth.) Thankfully, a savvy Metal Blade re-released it in the mid 90s, giving the album a new lease on life. As an added bonus, the re-release includes the low-budget, but worthwhile "Nightmares" ep from 1987. This is an excellent place for the uninitiated to discover this shamefully-underrated band. I believe that fans of Iron Maiden, Armored Saint and early Helloween would really get into this!

5 out of 5 stars Where have all the metal heads gone?.......2002-12-18

This was one of my very favorites in the 80's. Great vocals and outstanding musicians. As a guitarist, I loved their style. I wish music like this was still around.

5 out of 5 stars none.......2005-02-12

The Janacek on this is the best available on compact disc.
The version of Hey Jude---a plodding, overrated song to begin with---is absolutely god-awful; akin to nails on a chalkboard to this beautiful album.

4 out of 5 stars humble opinion of a music student.......2004-07-02

It was brilliant to use the music of Leo Janacek as the score of this fantastic film. It gives a great feeling of the country and its people. The performances on this soundtrack could be better, but the occasional coarseness - that sometimes annoys me - suits the movie. The two songs shouldn't be next to all that great repertoire, but they are a part of the soundtrack...While I wouldn't compare Debussy and Satie with Janacek as they are completely different, I do agree that it's worth listening to!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the janacek, anyway..........2001-02-17

i have to disagree with the last review in that if I could take the version of hey Jude off, plus Joj Joj Joj, I would in a second. they stick out sorely and are unlike the rest of the album, which introduced me to janacek, for which I'm forever grateful. the piano songs in particular rank up there for me with Debussy's solo piano work, and Erik Satie's. evocative, delicate, melodious, accessible; just gorgeous. the versions here seem good to me - I'm no expert, but they are better than the versions on the janacek CD this album led me to buy.
