As good as Pomus and Gordy were, they can't compare with the premier rock & roll songwriters of the pre-Beatles era: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chuck Berry, and Percy Mayfield. The team of Leiber (the lyricist) and Stoller (the composer) created such enduring standards as "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Those songs and 33 more were assembled into a bookless Broadway musical called Smokey Joe's Cafe, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards. If this soundtrack album is any indication, the show was an abomination, an act of self-betrayal by Leiber and Stoller, who not only participated in putting the show together but also co-produced the album with Arif Mardin. Instead of remaining true to the songs' rock & roll roots, the soundtrack producers have allowed the obscure stage performers to commit Broadway's worst sins: excessive earnestness, undernourished rhythms, and bombastic over-singing. Everyone in the cast has a good singing voice, but no one has a distinctive musical personality. Michael Park's Presley parody on "Jailhouse Rock," B.J. Crosby's confusion of vocal power for vocal attitude on "Hound Dog," and Victor Trent Cook's syrupy version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" prove Broadway chorus dancers are no substitute for real rock & roll singers. --Geoffrey Himes

Smokey Joe's Cafe is an execellent Broadway play and the musical soundtrack is great listening. The songs of Leiber and Stoller bring back memories of the 50 and 60's. The songs are classics that last for all time.

    3 out of 5 stars Blaxice.......2002-10-31

I very talented young man who in this age of pre-packaged, radio-formatted stars is faced with not knowing which demographic to target. Should he play up the smooth balladeer and be another face in the crowd, or try his hand as the loveable street-wise hustler hanging with his homeys and risk being the summer flava-of-the month? Although his ballads are definitely a strenght, especially "Beautiful You", his squeaky clean image makes "The Way We Roll" and "OOOH WHEE" almost comical.

Not knowing which way to turn Braxton tries to hit all corners of the musical map, missing more times than hitting. This shotgun approach makes this effort sound like he won a talent contest and got a chance to cut a demo as the grand prize. Maybe he should have turned to his cousin,Toni (yes THAT Toni Braxton) for help.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable music for any age group or race........1999-09-16

Jerry Braxton is a great (old school) new talent whose music is versatile and pleasant to listen to. I played his CD for our Christmas party at work, which is a versatile group of people and everyone enjoyed his music. The CD contains easy listening music as well as music that makes you want to get up and dance. I believe that this young man is going places. He is an excellent talent.

5 out of 5 stars This is the most diverse album ever, it's the bomb!.......1998-09-14

I am very impressed with the quality of this recording. The smoothe R&B sounds, "If I Can't Have You", "Tell Me", "Ayanna" and the Top 40 with live instruments, "Money Ain't Everything" and "Down" along with the Hispanic sounding mixed with R&B "Yo Te Quiero" and the symphonic "Beautiful You" not to mention the Hip Hop sounding "The Way We Roll" and "Must Be Love" and the dance track "Oooh Weee". This guy is going to be the next super star. I saw the video on BET for "If I Can't Have You" and it was incredible. My wife insisted that I go out and buy the CD for her and her sisters. This is a must get, it's got something for EVERYBODY. I just wish you could sample it on the web.

    Sincerely, Jimmy
