5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

Very good value.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Might not be 1 or 3,but a must for any rare AOR collection.......2005-06-03

"Who's Right,Who's Wrong" has harmony parts that truly soar, with Kenny Loggins guesting with Page & George(my personal favorite tune from the album)."Sailor Song","Take My Heart Away"(although I prefer Ricky Peterson's 1990 version better),and "Chemistry" are worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars What a marvelous album !!!.......2004-07-09

I just came across this cd. What a collection of songs ! Confirming what other reviewers have said, this is a lost gem of the late seventies-early eighties. The album starts off with a tonic song where you can hear aggressive guitars with a very Californian sound. Number 2, "The Sailor's song" sounds so much like Steely Dan AND Toto. What a blend my friends ! Rythm, melody and.... again... guitars. Plus the vocals, also very.... Californian, with an unexpected end for this second track. The record goes on and you can feel the enthusiasm these people had playing their music. Nothing to do with the overproduced, pasty, tasteless and predictable stuff you find on so many albums today...

Believe it or not, the songs are even jazzy at times ("Chemistry" for instance). In fact, you have many spicy and tasty ingredients on this album. That is what made that style of music true fusion and so wonderful before it became commercial and went out of fashion, even if the Pages never became millionaires under this label and name (see other reviewers).

This album has more punch and knack than their self titled album, but if you like Michael Sembello, Steely Dan, Toto, Kenny Loggins, Airplay and the Jay Graydon sound, you cannot have a collection without "Future street". I only wish it was longer than 34 minutes and that they had a remastered edition of this cd. That would be the max !

5 out of 5 stars A smashing sophomore effort!.......2001-07-26

The first Pages album (simply known as Pages) from 1978 was an artistic triumph but a commercial failure. Its combination of jazzy pacing, bluesy coloring, and pop-rock overtones simply was too much of a cross-genre product to be successful in any of those markets. As a result, the second Pages offering from 1979 was decidedly more pop-rock in style.

Once again produced by Bobby Colomby, Future Street represented the first of many stages in the transformation of Richard Page and Steve George from pop-fusion artists to big time rock stars with Mr. Mister. "I Do Believe In You" leads off the album with an outright attempt at a hit song. [It actually briefly peaked at #84 in December 1979, and was later covered by America and Frank Stallone.] "The Sailor's Song" came next, driven by an outstanding instrumental segment and captivating lyrics about life on the open ocean. The album tended to alternate between slower tracks like "Take My Heart Away", and "Who's Right, Who's Wrong" (co-written by Kenny Loggins and also found on his album, Keep The Fire), and more uptempo cuts like the electric title track and the slightly progressive-oriented "Chemistry." Steve George contributes a rare lead vocal on "Two People."

Like the first album, Future Street maintains Bobby Colomby's exquisite production values and soothing sound and demonstrates an incredible range of styles, instrumentation, and pacing. Unlike the previous effort, the album has a more radio-friendly feel in tune with the times. This is not meant to take anything away from the album -- it is still far and away a first-class effort, and it is another must-have for true soft rock fans of the '70s and early '80s. Unfortunately, Page and George were unable to find commercial success with Future Street, either. The album failed to chart, and Pages was dropped from the Epic label. But Page and George refused to give up. With a revamped lineup, they resurfaced on Capitol Records two years later with another self-titled album.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, yes, yes!.......2000-07-30

Over the years, since Mr. Mister became popular in the 80s, I'd heard that Richard Page and Steve George had collaborated musically prior to their Mr. Mister days. I was delighted to find that some of that music is still available, namely this album. Excellent is the one word I can use to describe this CD! The music is brilliant, imaginative. Anyone who was ever a fan of Richard Page and Steve George from Mr. Mister should buy this CD. The music is not so "top-40". It's smooth and even a little bit funky. LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Richard Page & Steve George - Pre MisterMister.......2000-05-24

This CD brings back sooooo many memories....all good! The year was 1979 and I was a buding musician in college and I played the three PAGES albums I had to death. You can tell these guys listened to a few Steely Dan albums in their day. Hey AMAZON...find the other two albums and I can guarantee you two sales!

    5 out of 5 stars HIP!!.......2005-12-10

Marilyn Harris is, in my opinion, on a fast express track to Future Street, where it's at, to a beat so sweet and bittersweet, you'll want to go there too. Here she gives us a varietal songbook that covers every aspect of life and love, surrounding herself with a pack of talented cats that bounce us along on a breezy ride to satisfaction and completion. Ms. Harris has been around the block and now, as a singing songwriter, and driving a mean piano, she zooms through your neighborhood, sweeping out the care, the blues, and other debris and leaving you with a feeling of - WHUZZAT? Besides the listed players, she has the inestimable company of arranger/producer/engineer Mark Wolfram, who also does a zippy vocal duet with Marilyn. She also has, as guest vocalist, the great Mark Winkler, an already arrived Future Street cat, who co-wrote five of the songs with her. Ah, the songs! Aside from one brilliant "standard," she wrote them all (there is one other collaboration in the set.) So, drop the needle, as we used to say, on this baby: sit back and relax - fasten your seatbelts. Play it in the car! Play it in the bar! Play it anywhere.  We're gonna take you there...to Future Street!

DOROTHY PARKER (Marilyn Harris) gets it rolling, with a message to the faint of heart -
based on a poem by Parker: Resume. Check it out.... Tenor Sax solo - Dan Higgins
AIN'T GOT NOTHIN' ON YOU (Harris/Smith) is Marilyn's lyric to the music of her teacher,
Hale Smith, to whom she dedicates this CD.... Vibraphone solo - Bob Leatherbarrow,
         Flugelhorn solo -Warren Luening
FUTURE STREET (Winkler/Harris), the title tune, gets the joint a-jumpin'....
Tenor Sax solo - Pete Christlieb
SUNGLASSES IN THE RAIN (Winkler/Harris) is a jaunty, really hip, tongue-in-cheek,
hipster snapshot of the street life Mark Winkler strolls along and Pete Christlieb plays
some cooool tenor to make the duo a trio....
MY DISSIPATION (Marilyn Harris) ....well, I don't know what to say. She got it in a dream,
she says. If you run into Ms. Harris you could ask her - but she seems to feel that you
can sing about anything as long as it has that samba beat - and it does....
         Flute solo - Dan Higgins
IN A LONELY PLACE (Winkler/Harris) was inspired by an old movie of the same name,
a smoky ballad... Trombone solo -Andy Martin
EXPRESS (Marilyn Harris) - Man! We're on our way! It was an instrumental once - but
after writing lyrics for a New York City vocal group that never happened, she drafted
inside man Mark Wolfram, to make it a flying duet -
         simultaneous words a-whoppin' -boppin'....
INSOMNIAC (Winkler/Harris) - Ha! Delightful, as long as I don't have to stay up late.
Marilyn says she's the essence of the song whereas her co-writer is the opposite -
a Day Person - but with imagination....
LOST IN THE STARS (Anderson/Weill) is a rarity among "standards". I've never enjoyed
the song more, and we are reminded of the presence on this set of arranger Mark
Wolfram.... Flugelhorn solo - Wayne Bergeron
DON'T WANNA KNOW (Marilyn Harris) comes from Marilyn's reading of a "Savage
Love" column by Dan Savage.  Wise advice, maybe, for the "never tell" group....
Flugelhorn solo - Warren Luening, Trombone solo - Andy Martin
THE GOOD GUYS (Winkler/Harris) - Mark Winkler says this lyric came out of the recent
troubles our country has experienced, you know. Marilyn gives it a groove with hope of
peace, love, and stability....    Baritone Sax solo - Bill Liston
LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVING TO SAY GOODBYE (Marilyn Harris) - Marilyn says you
do have to say "I'm sorry" when you're in love, in order never to say "Goodbye" - that's
the trick....    Trombone solo - Andy Martin, Alto Sax solo - Dan Higgins

There it is. Play it agin! - Bob Dorough, on the cusp of the new year - 2004...

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Something to be desired.......2005-11-30

The Safri Duo consists of two percussionists; Uffe Savery and Morten Friis; and recently they've turned to performing pop music. But much of their earlier work was in the area of contemporary art music, and it is from that area that this disc appears. Five compositions by four composers are included: Per Norgard's Bach to the Future for percussion duo and orchestra; Steve Reich's Nagoya Marimba and Music for Pieces of Wood; Wayne Siegel's 42nd Street Rondo; and Jacob ter Veldhuis's Goldrush Concerto, again for percussion duo and orchestra.

Norgard's concerto, Bach to the Future, is a twenty minute fantasy on three Bach Preludes from The Well-Tempered Clavier; there's a certain playful fascination in hearing notes from the C major prelude spread out among some unusual orchestral combinations, like muted trumpet, vibraphone, and violin. Purists will of course be horrified, and some of us will be amused, but I suspect that the most common reaction will be indifference. Other Norgard pieces, especially I Ching for percussion solo, are so much more intriguing.

The two Reich pieces similarly fail to inspire. I'm not a big fan of Nagoya Marimbas, and I have to report that while the Safri Duo play the notes and rhythms superbly, the dynamics are too restrained and the piece comes off less well than it might. It's in the Music for Pieces of Wood, though, that the Safri Duo do the most harm. This composition is for five percussionists each playing a set of tuned claves. Claves a pair of hard wood sticks struck together with a very crisp, incisive sound; one stick rests on the fingers of the closed (left) hand, and the other is held in the right hand and struck against it. Safri Duo, in a display of bravado, play all five parts themselves, presumably without overdubbing; consequentially they cannot play the piece on the instruments it is written for. They substitute log drums, wood blocks, temple blocks and the like, and the piece loses much of its special charm as a result. I suppose that in these instrumental substitutions they're doing something of what Per Norgard does to Bach's music, but at its best Norgard's arrangements have an enriching effect while this substitution has the opposite effect.

Wayne Seigel's 42nd Street Rondo is a five minute duet in which each performer has a matching set of mixed, untuned percussion instruments. The composer writes: "the title refers to the conrner of 42nd Street and Broadway in Manhattan, where street musicians often perform" and the composition demonstrates this rhythmic street vitality. This is one of my favorite pieces on the disc; others will surely be driven to distraction by it. Its somewhat similar to the sound world of the percussion group Stomp who play lots of "found percussion" instruments.

Jacob ter Veldhuis's Goldrush Concerto is the longest piece on the CD. It was generated by one of Veldhuis's earlier compositions, "Gold Rush". The Safri Duo make their way through a large number of percussion instruments, including a drum machine that plays voice samples from films such as The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I must admit that I find these voice samples extremely disturbing and out of place in the sense of the piece--I'm sure they're supposed to be amusing, but they upset the whole feel of the work for me. Otherwise, the Goldrush Concerto is a lively, well-written piece that is quite attractive with a terrifically exciting finale, and which features some amazing performances.

Absolutely brillant! David takes our hand and walks us through a musical journey of where house music started, went and is heading with class, style and intelligence. This cd is so well packaged and flawless in its track selection. David, thank you for sharing your musical knowledge of what house music is all about with the buying public. God bless you and may God continue to uplift and heal the world through your work.

      3 out of 5 stars jj.......2000-10-02

Pretty good, but the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like happy hardcore. It seems to get cheesier and cheesier. I do like it, its nice and fast with plenty of interesting noises, but it could do with being a bit harder. The one track set up is mildly annoying, but I suppose its indicative of a non commercial production.

4 out of 5 stars Bunter tears it up.......2000-08-09

The 'Future of Hard Dance - Vol 1' is an amazing, non-stop mix of continous hard house/techno and trance. Having taken quite a step sideways from Bunter's normal choice a Hardcore Techno - a move he attributes to a stagnation in the scene - Hard Dance explores the realms of super fast minus the sledge hammer. The beats are still hard - just not hardcore. The track selection is superb - creating an atmospheric mix that has that 'epic' feeling minus the cheese of the Gategrasher/Ministry or Cream CDs. This is avoided through the pace and intensity of the tracks and the excellent mixing - Bunter's trade mark. Dont let his deviation deter those who like hardcore- I do and I dug this - just something a little different.
