Catch the rap on the song, Chocolate City, and - if you didn't know it was from 1975 - you would be thinking it's 2007 real.

From the classic album cover, to the band getting into its funkiest mood to date, Parliament was setting the foundation to a classic run of releases. And all that needs to be said is George Clinton, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel and Bootsy Collins being joined by Prakash John, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and the Brecker Brothers (Randy & Michael).

The groove is too irresistible on What Comes Funky & Bigfootin', with I Misjudged You a tribute to Washington, D.C., R&B group, The Unifics. The most ambitious track is Let Me Be, as a twist of gospel and a touch of jazz is melted into the R&B mix.

There are alternative mixes of If It Don't Fit (Don't Force It) and I Misjudged You. A track that didn't make the cut for the album, Common Law Wife, is included. Sometimes, though, there is a reason why songs should stay in the vault.

And please remember, CC, this started the countdown to the Mothership Connection that was released later in the year.

Can you dig it CC? to each his reach and if I don't cop it ain't mine to have...Love that line from Chocolate city, love the horns and that Bass guitar sound of Bootsy's Mu-Tron! I especially loved "I Misjudged You". This song is indeed "The Parliaments" the sound of the harmonies and the musicianship sound "Funkadelish" but then again so are they! I loved the album when they came in on "I know what you can do, let us lay some funk on you" I laughed and danced on the one with these strange critters and then it all made sense on the next album, "Mothership Connection". The guys were different from the Moments, The Tavares, Dells and all the other bands and singers comming up--Playful but man, could these guys play and sing! A tight album with some good tracks---a keeper. Parliament got you going with "Up for the Downstoke" and set the stage with "Chocolate City" to let you know that "there is a new sheriff in town" and he's coming a spaceship! Not riding in on a horse like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, This dude came in on a freakin' spaceship and took over the airwaves and let you know that if you didn't like "Up Fo the Down Stroke" or "Chocolate City", you were dancin' to "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On"---that was them too--(That Fuss was us--remember?)If you did attempt to adjust your radio, they were on all stations and slapped some "Cosmic Slop" on you! A very tight album, setting the stage for the funk to come......

I dont really feel like giving a detailed review, I just feel that this is a 5 star album and it deserves credit. I just played it again after a three year hiatus and I was blown away, just like the first time I heard it, over 20 years ago. Funk is not supposed to be perfect....its about what moves you or provokes you, it's as simple as that.
I'm not one to buy reissues, remasters, and such. I have found that sometimes a remaster can be worse than the original! This is one remaster you're going to want to get, though.
If you want great funk, this is it and you really can`t go wrong with this great disc.

This album from funkified Parliament is pretty much a personal rendition albeit kinda old school of Washington, DC otherwise known as "chocolate city". I remember listening to this album well when I was a child and never really understood it enough to really groove to it but now I do as an almost thirty year-old. Tracks like the first one chocolate city, don't force it and common law wife are pretty much in the vein of previous Parliament songs. Any fan of Parliament is sure to get into this cd.

stronger than your average 'smooth jazz' cd... has a bit more 'soul' to it; mr. marcus aint afraid of a well placed beat which is what helps keep your attention when listening to some mellow sounds... (unless you just WANT something that's gonna put you to sleep!) ...as far as smooth jazz goes, this is 5 star disc, but since i'm a very picky person and stubborn (my friends will attest!), i can only give this a 4 overall because the weight of this cd is carried mostly upon the shoulders of 3 or 4 tracks and not as evenly as i would like...

i miss alyson williams and wish she would return with an album or two... she coo's oh so very lovely on the one track given to her... and marcus's version of 'til the cops come knockin' is somehots#it!

to the less critical fan, this is a must have. i hope yall enjoy it.

I really enjoyed the the arrangement on Chocolate groove. My favorite is Morning Light and Won't You Let Me Love You. It brought a sense of peace and sensitivity to me. Besides, it's good relaxing music.

I was put on to Marcus Johnson after hearing "88 Ways to Love" and bought the CD the next day. I don't find CDs that I can put in and let play all the way through too often, but rest assured that Marcus Jonhson fulfills this request and then some . After the last song my ears were left hungry for more. i promise, this is one CD you'll have to replace....you will literally wear it out!

    YES YES YES. THis album was dedicated to the nation's cap. Washington DC aka Chocolate City (well not so much chocolate now). This was 1975. and the number 1 "soul station" was WOL. WOL always pumped "Pfunk" real hard. It started with "Cosmic Slop" which got so much air play that DC was so hard on that song, according them (P-Funk). DC put them on the map. Chocolate city is one of the best Parliament Cd's /albums of all time. WIth punchy horns (with no credit on the album), heavy bass. Chonkin' guitars, snappy, snazzy, punchy vocals & all out down low funky. This album introduces the late "Glen Goins" wailing and shrieking on "Big Footin". "Ride On", is the jam. "Together" was my favotire one and still is. (My wife and I danced to that right after we got married in Oct 06) That was our jam back in the day. The dark side of the album is the creepy "Let Me Be' Led by the late Eddie Hazel. Bernie Worrell is holding down the keyboards here with the string synthesizer, it reminds of you somebody being tied down on a railroad track and the train is about to run them over. but its' a cool song.....

    I recommend this.... Plus, this was history in the making.



    CC aint so much CC now. Dc is not what it used to be. In my opinion, the "soul" of the city has left!!!!!!!!

    This albums first three cuts are more then enough to carry this album but with the minimal "Let Me Be" and the slamming
    "I Misjudged You" and "Big Footin'" in between this is pretty
    impressive stuff.

    The 'Chocolate City' album was the beginning of what would become the Holy Trinity of P-Funk: Clinton/Collins/Worrell. These three funkateers wrote just about all of the songs on this LP, and set the stage for the classic 'Let's Take It To The Stage' and 'Mothership Connection' albums that followed. The title cut is a masterpiece of smooth, Jazz-flavored Funk, with a dead-on-the-point narrative by George Clinton. The Funk continues to flow throughout the LP, until.... "Let Me Be", a sparse, piano-driven, gospel-tinged testament, comes in out of nowhere, reminding the listener that this is Parliament-Funkadelic that you're listening to, therefore expect the unexpected. Only Parliament-Funkadelic could interrupt a steady stream of Funk and throw in some good ol', gut-wrenchin' Soul! The music continues with "If It Don't Fit, Don't Force It", utilizing an up-tempo, light R&B rhythm to mask the far more sophisticated lyrics. The album takes another unexpected turn with "I Mis-Judged You". On this tune Parliament tries to sound like Blue Magic, and...well, it just didn't work. Actually, the song isn't a bad song. They just sound inebriated while singing it. At one point, the singers rush ahead of the tempo and...well, you'll just have to hear it for yourselves. "Big Footin'" brings the Funk back home with some scorching Glen Goins vocals. 'Chocolate City' is a must for any P-Funk collection.

    ..which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I agree with the music fan from Virginia-I really couldn't get into "Let Me Be" or "I Misjudged You", no matter how hard I tried. "Let Me Be" was gut-wrenching enough to make you want to ... IMHO and "I Misjudged You" was depressing. However, especially the first 5 tunes, the rest of the songs were ULTRA FUNKY-just the type of funk you'd expect from Parliament. Ride On!!!!

      This compilation of newer pieces for the unusual combination of voice, horn, and piano provides a wonderful complement to the standards in your library (Auf dem Strom, Alphorn, etc). The Cooke piece is not often performed and rarely recorded; and the Eric Street pieces are thoroughly fresh and delightful. Highly recommended!

            This was probably the first tech-house album ever, composed by tech-house creator Terry Lee Brown jr. Something special indeed: the music is just like chocolate: dark and sweet! Even the CD cover looks like chocolat packaging. Fantasic bass and rythm wraped in melodic ambiental sounds. Fast. Strong. Melodic. Dynamic. Everything is superb. For real tech-house lovers. A classic. A master-piece. If you don't have it, it's sin!

            For those of you that have been graced by other titles off the Plastic City label, this one is a must. This album has the same feel as "Jigsaw Pieces" by the Timewriter. The beats are deep with just an air of Electronic mixed in. The beats are mixed from track to track so it sounds like a continueous mix. Nice job Terry. The album starts out nice then finishes on a really "deep house" note. For those looking for a House sound just a little different than that typical NY style House CD, this is a must buy.

            All of the tracks on this album are deceptively simple, yet skillfully crafted, captivating tech-house tunes which are nicely varied and in such a format that they could easily be a DJ mix.

            I have put on this entire CD at a party between sets and it kept them dancing. I have also used this to wind down and relax after a long day. It just depends on the volume level you play it at - a masterpiece.

            Terry Lee Brown Jr (a German making house music under this name I believe) provides an interesting dilemma on this smooth collection of original creations. He provides 12 tracks that will float you through the late night, yet struggling to remember the songs the next day.

            This is not to say this isn't a good disc; it's very well produced and mixed, and starts off strong with the shimmery throb of "Straylight" and the filtered, harder sounds of "the Music". He keeps up the beat through the next few songs, adding vocal snippets or snatches of lyrics here and there, providing quality tracks up until the only disappointment, the final track "Nightshift".

            This is an excellent disc to be sure, and the track quality is so consistent and high you'd swear it's a DJ mix. I just wish it had added a few surprises.

            Completely chilled out grooves on this album. The basslines are done nicely and the cd has a lot of soul put into it. Mixed viery nicely. Its good, quality house but spacey and has no vocals. Decent just chilling too or taking a drive with it pumping.
