Nine seconds into her first studio album since 2002's Blacklisted, and there it is. You can't miss it. The voice. Instantly recognizable and uniquely commanding, it has been uniformly overlooked by the masses and beloved by those who have caught on. And, believe it or not, it gets even better, whether Neko Case is warbling like a porch-swing neighbor to Loretta Lynn ("Margaret vs. Paulene," "John Saw That Number"), pontificating from the spiritual pulpit of Etta James ("Lion's Jaws," "Maybe Sparrow"), or unleashing the high-octane zeal of a power-pop spitfire ("Hold On Hold On," "The Needle Has Landed"). Her uncanny, often eccentric lyrics have always been delivered with an inherent passion behind the impulse, but rarely have they approached the boldness of these dozen--many of which were inspired by generations of tales from her Ukrainian ancestors. As usual, Case's industry running buddies collaborate to make the sounds behind her, from Calexico to Howe Gelb of Giant Sand to the Band's renowned Garth Hudson. Still, it all comes back to the voice, that serenading urgency that asks in the title song, "How can people not know what beauty this is?" Yes, there are some to ask, how not? --Scott Holter

Album Description

Neko is a major poet by any standard, a songwriter less interested perhaps in traditional narrative form than in distilling a pure moment of time. She claims no genre, nor utilizes any classic formula for her songs and singing. More than anything she thrives in the spaces in between her music. After two years in the making, "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood" is in many ways the sum total of her journey.

4 out of 5 stars great adult contemporary music, hooray for Fox Confessor.......2007-08-01

We love having satellite radio in our house and that's how we're introduced to a lot of the new music we listen to. I was listening to my satellite radio while fixing dinner when Neko Case came on and I was just transfixed. I love her voice, she sounds like a modern-day Patsy Cline, but doesn't sing country, Neko sings more adult contemporary music. She's great. Songs #1 Margaret vs Pauline, #2 Star Witness (which is an odd song, I can't quite grasp the meaning here... Are you singing about a girl in love with a boy who treats her shabbily, or a rape, or what? Both?), and #3 Hold On, Hold On are the real favorites on this cd, but the entire record is a gem. I love the fact that some great instruments are played on here, hammered dulcimer by Neko, accustic bass and cello, banjo, but again, not country. I'm loving this. Luckily for me this cd is not a tape which will get worn out in my car, I'm playing it constantly. As for the cd art, the drawings are darling, done by a Julie Morstad and Neko herself, also. All around a phenominal cd. I didn't give it a 5-star rating because not all of the songs took me in 100%. I hope to see Neko and her band in a small venue somewhere, Raleigh maybe, but I think her nuances would be over-run in a big place.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-07-28

I'll keep it short. Never hering Neko Case before, I took the jump and bought this cd. I was blown away. I have been listening to it for months now and I think she has the most beautiful female voice I have ever heard. The lyrics are a bit abstract but she could sing pages out of the phone book and I would buy her music. Because of this cd I bought a New Pornographers cd but the only songs I can listen to on it are hers (and occasionally Dan Bejar's). A truly wonderful singer.

5 out of 5 stars Neko Case - Amazing Voice, Lyrics and Sound.......2007-06-28

Though this album is a smidge over 35 minutes long, it is such a good listen. She could have recorded this album with only the lyrics and vocals alone.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to billing.......2007-06-20

I heard "Hold On, Hold On" and read the rave reviews, so I got it. Unfortunately, I discovered the reviews are unwarranted.

Yes, she has an incredible voice, but her caterwauling on some of the cuts is just too much. The instrumentalists are adept, but they can't make up for the mediocre songwriting.

Take the obscure lyrics. Perhaps they resonate with the songwriter, but they do nothing for me. Instead of coming off as mysterious or enigmatic, they simply fail to connect on any level.

Then there are the tunes. At best they are forgettable, at worst, supremely annoying.

Perhaps "Hold On" is worth buying the CD for. If not, I would recommend carefully listening to all the snippets before making your decision.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't even come close to Blacklisted.......2007-06-19

Blacklisted is in a league of it's own. If you like the more twangy country sound that Neko had on her first few cd's, the you might like this. I prefer the darker, haunting, sometimes jazzy sound on Blacklisted, and this just doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Pretty good BFS stuff. New lighter fare, but has the definitive sound of BFS. It's different enough not to be stale though. Still, Drunk Enough... is still my fave.

5 out of 5 stars Classic BFS.......2007-02-16

If you like Bowling For Soup's previous CDs you'll like this one. Witty lyrics and a pop-punk beat make up the newest addition to the BFS world. And if you get this CD just for the lyric insert it will be worth it ;-)

4 out of 5 stars Trying to explain the title to the shop assistant was tough..........2007-01-25

The Great Burrito Extortion Case marks Bowling For Soup's sixth album to date and in my opinion its one of their best.

On the new album, the guys of Bowling for Soup are just having a good time singing and joking around all to a pop punk beat. The music is definitely not for everyone but if you're a fan of the pop punk genre well you should get a kick out of this album because not only does it contain some great tunes but its pretty funny to boot.

The hit single "High School Never Ends" is probably one of the best tracks on the album and is also probably the most meaningful. While the song seems rather silly and upbeat, however, if you really listen to the lyrics the song is pretty much stating fact. Life is High School and it never ends until we die. I think it's interesting that Bowling for Soup can make such a silly sounding song but at the same time it can still prove true to our society.

Other noteworthy songs include Much More Beautiful Person, Val Kilmer, and my personal favorite track Why Don't I Miss You? While I can't say I ever felt the need to skip any of the tracks on the album and I have listened to this album well over 10 times now, I do feel the track I'm Gay is probably the weakest song on the album. It just seems to try to hard to be funny when after a while it gets old.

I have understood why Bowling for Soup hasn't become a big Pop Punk band like Blink 182 but maybe it's for the better. I personally think these guys rock and I am a dedicated fan to their music. They try really hard to have fun and upbeat music with a pop punk sound and I respect them for it. Some may even call Bowling for Soup a spoof of pop punk music but I think there awesome either way.

All in all, The Great Burrito Extortion Case is a great album. If you're a fan of Bowling for Soup and enjoyed their last few albums you will probably love this CD as much as you loved those.

5 out of 5 stars It's BFS...of course it's amazing! .......2007-01-17

As their 9th studio release BFS couldn't have hoped for more out of an album. There are so many songs that could be radio releases on this new album that I don't know how they decided to choose High School Never Ends as a starter. Buy this album, buy this album, buy this album. I can't say enough good things about BFS both as a band and as guys...they're completely freakin amazing.

Songs to listen to over and over on this CD: High School Never Ends ,Why Don't I Miss You, Much More Beautiful Person, WHEN WE DIE (mainstream radio Feb. 5th), Lovesick Stomach Ache.

Neko Case's third solo effort is a moody, atmospheric affair that both satisfies and mystifies. Recorded in Tucson with a stellar band that includes Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino, Blacklisted charms you with its haunting, reverb-soaked songs, most of which were written by Case herself. The lyrics are impressionistic and, at times, inscrutable. "Fast train, where do your passengers wait?" she sings in the title song. "What's at the heart of your engine's rage?" While it's not always clear what Case is getting at, the overall mood of the album is one of loss and melancholy. Soaring above it all is Case's remarkable Patsy Cline-meets-Judy Garland voice, which she uses to great effect on the album's two torchy cover songs: Sarah Vaughan's "Look for Me (I'll Be Around)" and Aretha Franklin's "Running Out of Fools." --David Hill

Album Description

Her third CD, is a lush, haunting showcase for her formidable vocal talents, as well as an intensely intimate work that evokes a dark elegance with a hint of twang. Bloodshot Records. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-07-03

I'm usually pretty level-headed about artists and don't lapse into starry-eyed fandom. However, for Neko Case I make an exception.

This, my favourite of her albums is virtually perfect - superb songs, superb playing (Neko always seems to get together a band who sound like they've been playing together forever) and sound, unshowy arrangement and production that get the most out of the songs. A record I listen to time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars a 5 if only.......2007-06-04

i'd have given it a 5 if my favourite song, outro with bees, wasn't so darn short! WHY OH WHY???

but this cd is still terrific!

4 out of 5 stars Neko puts it down........2007-03-21

Neko Case's sultry, reverb laden vocals are the soundtrack to some wonderfully echo driven dreamworld. I am fairly new to Ms. Case's music, but this album certainly delights and draws the listener in.

5 out of 5 stars ... with love and squalor.......2007-03-02

I guess everyone has their favorite Neko Case album. All I can say is that I have gotten endless listening pleasure from Blacklisted, in which Neko draws from a wealth of sources to produce one of the most magical alt country CD's I've heard. Haunting yes, because she seems to evoke the spirit of Patsy Cline as if drawn from a deep dark well, echoing not only her voice but the depth of emotions as well. Even on a song as sentimental as Pretty Girls, Neko seems to find something extra. All the songs ring true, which is a pretty tall order these days.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album - but no Fox Confessor.......2007-02-12

After purchasing my favorite album this year, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, I needed to hear more Neko Case. I went back to her catalog of albums and decided on Blacklisted. It is an album full of wonderful songs and a few mediocre tunes as well. I couldn't expect a masterpiece like Fox Confessor, but this album is really quite nice to hear. Most notable is Lady Pilot in which Case's voice really offers the best vocal melody on the album. I also really love Neko's lyrics, especially on Deep Red Bells, I Wish I Was the Moon, and Pretty Girls, where she slices out a piece of life told from the perspective of the common person who has gone thru some significant experience. This album is enough to keep me buying more of her older albums and always looking out for more of her new releases.

Imagine a loose consortium of musicians who combine the lilting melodies of the Zombies with the driving hooks of the Kinks. Sure, it's what all the kids are doing these days, but Vancouver's New Pornographers are one of the few--along with the Shins--to get the balance right. Their third full-length offers more of the same smart power-pop that made Mass Romantic and Electric Version instant classics, plus some surprising new moves. As singer/songwriter Carl Newman (The Slow Wonder) has noted, "You can't play ebow without sounding like Eno," and indeed, Brian Eno's sublime early recordings are evoked on this more introspective offering. There are also strong new vocalists joining Neko Case: Nora O'Connor (the Blacks) and Newman's piano-playing niece, Kathryn Calder. If there was a flaw with previous efforts, it was that the contributions of Dan Bejar (Destroyer), fine as they were, sounded somewhat out of place. Just as they're better integrated this time around, Twin Cinema offers every member of this insanely talented ensemble the chance to shine. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

The third album from Vancouver's pop maestros continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer), as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. These songs veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of earlier works. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting, but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from The Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings, Eno, The Stranglers, 10cc, and other greats, all filtered through Newman's warped worldview.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Pop Perfection.......2007-07-13

Absolutely the best cd Ive heard in years for pure musical craftsmanship. The hooks are relentless and come at a blistering pace... initially they seem overdone and in-your-face, but after a few listens everything just clicks. I'll be the first to admit it took a couple listens to get into at first, but now this cd is like an addiction. I just have to listen, its no longer optional. The songs, and the album as a whole, just fit together perfectly. Its not often that I discover a cd thats so good that I feel compelled to write an online review (This is only my 2nd or 3rd Amazon review).

Neko Case is the icing on the cake, Im a huge fan of her solo work, and her contribution here makes the songs that much better. Do yourself a favor, pick up this cd and give it a few spins. Soon you wont be able to remove it from your cd player. And check out Neko Case's "Blacklisted" cd, the style is completely different from NP, but you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars It takes more time to appreciate this one.......2007-06-12

When I first got my hands on this hotly anticipated 3rd release from the NP's it didn't "hit" me like the first two. After a year of low rotation in my collection I'm now listening to it over headphones and it's just now striking me what a great disc this is. It's as good as their other discs and in a lot of ways even better. The Bleeding Heart Show is such a great tune. Don't give up on this one right away. Put it away for a month or two if you don't get it right away and then pull it back out on a rainy day and give it another try - you'll get it.

3 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2007-05-29

I guess it all depends on the type of music you like. I was drawn to The New Pornographers through Neko Case, and sad to say was dissapointed by the band. Not that they aren't a supremely talented band, but the droning voice of A.C. Newman wears thin on me, as is the case with Colin Meloy of The Decembrists. In fact, the two bands sound a lot alike, but Meloy brings a deeper literary flavor to his music that makes the songs much more enjoyable to listen to, at least for me. I much prefer Neko Case in her own element, singing her reverb-heavy folk ballads with a voice hauntingly familiar to Patsy Cline.

5 out of 5 stars So far above the fray it's almost unfair.......2007-05-16

If CDs ever become extinct and scientists need to extract their DNA thousands of years from now to recreate them (a la Jurassic Park), "Twin Cinema," the perfect pop-rock concoction, had better be the disc they use. My question is, who says heavy electric guitars are mandatory to make the perfect rock record? The New Pornographers prove that several great singers, some piano, unique songwriting and a penchant for the perfect pop melodies from song to song will carry a band just fine. Of course, the lush, bountiful quality to these songs qualifies them as more than mere pop tunes. Calling these songs pop is doing them a disservice.

The opposite of stodgy would be upbeat, and that's what "Twin Cinema" is, even on the slower tunes, which have a tendancy to transform to livelier jingles by the end. The title track begins the CD like a blast of fresh-air power pop, a feature many of these songs share. Yet the New Pornographers seemed to create this album with the knowledge that people like to download songs that suit their individual tastes these days. Thus, there is a diverse feel to the record, almost as if more than one band was involved in making it. The album is fluent throughout, yet diverse and creative enough to keep you on your toes. "Twin Cinema" never feels dull, because the tunes take unique turns every step of the way. The snappy songs are enhanced by crisp production, quirky lyrics and superb drumming, which might get a little lost amid all the ultra-catchy sounds.

Neko Case has the best female vocals in rock. Such songs as "The Bones of an Idol" and "These are the Fables" are nothing less than elegantly beautiful. "Broken Breads" sounds like Syd Barrett (see The Madcap Laughs) performing a tune in 2005. The vibrating guitars on "Three of Four" is pure swank, reminiscent of a few songs on R.E.M.'s Monster from 1994. The chorus on "Star Bodies" has the lushest-ever vocals by Case (double-tracked), for a sound that is irresistable. Finally, "Stacked Crooked," the last song, has the defiant sound of redemption, looking forward with a sense of hope and positivity, despite the screw-ups of the past: "Stacked crooked all along but now I'm on my way."

Who knows where the New Pornographers will take it from here, but it's hard to imagine they will ever top the brilliance of this album.

5 out of 5 stars New To The Indie World And Love This Recording.......2007-03-29

I started surfing around on Amazon about 4 months ago and discovered this recording. To preface, I have a very diverse music background and like everything from Miles Davis to Led Zeppelin to Neil Young to the Minutemen to the Grateful Dead to the Sex Pistols, etc.

This recording is so unique that I've listened to at least parts of it almost daily since I bought it 2 months ago. Very diverse range of sound, great lyrics, and very well produced. I highly, highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I've Said It Before..........2007-06-12

I've said it all before, I'm always amazed by her consistently great CDs, and how often they end up in the player. Great voice, great songs, and if you're a player, she will have you grabbing for your guitar to play along.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-16

I picked up this CD at one of Neko's shows, and it's become one of my favorites. Speaking of which "Favorite," a concert staple, is recorded here for the first time. I believe that it's the first song that Neko ever wrote, and it's a definite keeper. But for me, the highlight of the album is the Hank Williams song "Alone and Foresaken." There's a heavy rainfall in the background that reminds me of the final scene in the movie "Unforgiven." The whole experience is incredibly moving.

Note that this CD is more of an EP than an LP. It's got only eight tracks on it.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Neko album!.......2006-10-14

I really love the sound of this album! Some of the songs were new to me. With Neko's voice behind them - now that I have heard them - I'd have to say that there are a few songs on it that I just can't live without! I absolutely love 'Knock Loud', 'Make your Bed the River young Girl' and 'Poor Ellen Smith'. Oh my God can this gal sing, do gospel and her bluegrass songs always bring me to tears. I wholeheartedly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Meet Neko...your new Lady Pilot. :).......2005-09-19

wow. how many cover songs has Neko Case recorded? all her proper albums seem to include a handfull of tasty cover choices and now here's this little stop gap ep of some more (plus a few originals). i picked up my copy of this cd at one of her many live shows that i have been lucky enough to witness; and although this cd isn't as good as her live show, it's still a nice little addition to her very impressive discography. Neil Young and Hank Williams are covered here as well as a few more obscure choices and each cut shines in a very special Neko kind of way. this is the first appearance of the song "Favorite" which would later appear (different versions) on a Bloodshot compilation and "the Tigers Have Spoken" live album. all of Neko's albums are priceless and wonderful and certainly worthy of your time and your attention, but this little mini collection of songs holds a special intimate place in a fan's heart.

If you're wondering how Green Day managed to become the biggest punk band in the world, take a look at Bullet in a Bible. Recorded at their June 2005 two-night run at Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, this combined CD/DVD sees these former bong-hitting Californian dropouts embracing political activism, pantomime hilarity, and all the fripperies of a rock opera--and excelling at all three.

The first half is essentially a run-through of the group's 2004 album American Idiot, complete with anti-American rabble-rousing and a set of barbed insults tossed back at the "rednecks" across the pond. That out of the way, the band careen into a sort of greatest-hits set, with the likes of "Longview" and "Hitchin' a Ride" sharing space with a brass-laden "King for a Day" that sees Billie Joe Armstrong prancing around the stage in crown and ermine cape, singing snatches of Lulu's "Shout" and Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." Tremendously silly, but Green Day have managed to figure out how to play it like showmen without resorting to juvenile puerility or morphing into corporate yes-men, and that's a way harder trick than it looks. --Louis Pattison

Album Description

Featuring Green Day's first live DVD, the CD + DVD Bullet in a Bible captures the explosive band on the biggest tour in its career, in support of the Grammy-winning, quadruple-platinum, #1 charting American Idiot punk-rock epic. From two performances filmed in June 2005 before 65,000 fans, both in Milton Keynes in England, to the DVD's documentary segments following the band members around that city as they visit a war museum and various pubs, and share in-depth insights on the making and meaning of American Idiot, Green Day is #1 with a Bullet in a Bible. 4 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2007-07-02

On the 'Bullet in a Bible' DVD, Billie Joe Armstrong says that some bands worry about how they would create intimacy in front of a crowd of 65,000, but said that for Green Day it was irrelevant as they weren't trying to create intimacy, they were trying to create an event. Ultimately that's what 'Bullet in a Bible' is, an event, a fantastic spectacle.

The band open with a spine tingling version of their newer hits with 'American Idiot' and 'Holiday' leading the line. They also show how well 'Jesus of Suburbia' works when performed live. After these songs, Green Day bring their newer, more uninitiated fans through some of the earlier Green Day catalogue, with quality performances of, among other songs, 'Longview', 'Basket Case' and 'Minority'. These performances should give an electrified jolt to all Green Day fans, new and old.

During the encore, Billy Joe brings the only moment of the before eschewed intimacy to the concert, with his closing rendition of 'Good Riddance'. This brings a beautiful close to another fantastic show by the boys from California.

very good cd. st. jimmy is my far the best song on it and it has a good video.

5 out of 5 stars This one converted me.......2007-04-13

I love lots of different rock music, but I had never been sold on Green Day. Something about their music, and especially the production of their sound on their studio albums, did not appeal to me. This DVD/Cd combo changed my mind and got me listening to some songs over and over again. It has a frenetic energy that I didn't find in their studio work. I don't much like the unnecessary cussing, but I can overlook it when the songs are this good. I find it amusing to see a punk band use so many pretty vocal harmonies. Songs I couldn't bear to listen to on the albums suddenly were quite good here in concert, such as 'Basket Case' and 'Brain Stew'. Most of the stuff from 'American Idiot' is great here also.

5 out of 5 stars Energizing performance, great rock/punk music.......2007-03-14

For someone who grew up with rock music, was a child in the 60s, a teen and young adult in the 70s, and witnessed the early stages of punk, also in the 70s, this album/DVD came as something of a revelation. Although I've been more or less out of the loop in terms of both rock and punk for some years, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this disc--a "greatest hits" compilation leaning heavily on the "American Idiot" album--and watching the concert DVD. The songs belong to my daughter's generation, but geriatric as I am, I think the music is excellent, and the lyrics pretty intelligent, sometimes even searing. The DVD is fun to watch, too; the frenetic editing and choppy visuals don't really bother me.

I gather that some of the concert was cut from both disc and and film, but what is presented is very fine. The band, with two back up musicians, launch themselves into the American Idiot rock opera with a vengeance (complete with political commentary), and some older, vintage Green Day songs, like "Basket Case," and the mega-hit "Good Riddance," to the immense enthusiasm of the huge Brit crowd at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. Selections highlight the versatility of the group, which can belt out punk lyrics of anger and alienation, hard-hitting rock numbers, or melancholy ballads like "Wake Me Up When September Ends," without missing a beat. All three musicians seem powered up and at the top of their game, and Billie Joe Armstrong, an energizer bunny if there ever was one, keeps the energy level high from start to finish with his remarkable voice (a flexible tenor with an occasional, pleasing quaver) and onstage antics.

To add to all of this, the members of Green Day--baby faced, green eyed Billie Joe, the lean, intense Mike Dirnt, affable Tre Cool with his inimitable clowning--have an undeniable visual appeal than comes across well in the concert DVD, as it has in their videos (viewable on the Green Day website).

5 out of 5 stars Truth.......2007-02-12

Green Day is the largest band in the world right now,
the only bad to make the punk rock opera that stormed
the world over. people critisize them because they are jealous.
They are better and more talented them "Mee-tall-ica" and
rap "hustlers" "iz u with ma" (makes no sense) and they're angry
cuz they're going strong 18 years now and they are capable of real music.
hats to those who had good feedback for this incredible album

Bad critics are jealous too.
But of course they'll deny it like
all cowards in this world.

What k.d. lang branded "torch and twang" might serve as a starting point for a description of Neko Case's music, but the uniqueness of a style that incorporates country roots, punk attitude, and supper-club sophistication defies classification. Her 2003 debut performance on the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) showcases Case's artistry in a stripped-down setting, with stand-up bassist Tom Ray serving as a one-man rhythm section, Jon Rauhouse providing multi-instrumental virtuosity on banjo and a variety of guitars, and Kelly Hogan supplying impeccable harmony support. Case was touring at the time behind her Blacklisted album, though the setlist strays farther. On "Hex," written by Freakwater's Catherine Irwin, Case and Hogan could pass as the Louvin Sisters, while Bob Dylan's "Buckets of Rain" receives a languid reading punctuated by Rauhouse's Hawaiian lap-steel guitar. "Deep Red Bells" emphasizes the western side of country & western, with the more experimental "Maybe Sparrow" combining banjo and edgy atmospherics. Throughout, the bare-bones arrangements let the songs breathe and Case's voice soar. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars ok.. not her best.......2007-07-26

This cd is nicely done but does not contain any uptempo songs which while maybe not what she hangs her hat on are still very enjoyable. This cd grows on you but has no songs that leap out and grab you. I rate this the weakest of her cd's to date.

5 out of 5 stars What A Songbird.......2007-05-23

Beautiful album from a wonderful singer. She mixes country and folk as well as anyone. You would never believe this is a live recording. Don't nit-pik - just listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This generation's Patsy Cline.......2007-03-26

Neko Case is this generation's Patsy Cline only with more attitude. Her appeal crosses over multiple genre's but you can't quite categorize her. Pick up any of her catalog and you'll find yourself searching for more.

4 out of 5 stars In Case of Neko.......2007-03-24

For some stupid reason I thought the songs would be new. Imagine my chagrin when I learned this was taped in 2003! Anyway, she is definately talented and I love her voice. However, Fox Confessor is my favorite of hers. Live at Austin is a good buy and I would recommend it or anything by her to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars great songs and a unique voice.......2007-03-14

This is my first Neko album and boy what an introduction! Neko has a unique voice with a little country twang in some songs and a sultry blues sound in others. It tough to identify her style, but if I had to I would say its bluegrass. I can't wait to get another one of her albums.

Since his street-corner-playing days in Buffalo and on through nearly 30 years of making music, Peter Case always seemed to find time for a cover of Sleepy John Estes. Case's first album since 2002's Beeline actually goes one better, interpreting the legendary wailing blues master by stripping away adjunct instruments and pining for the carefree busking days where all that mattered were a guitar and a song to sing. And in this setting, not many can write them or sing them like Case. There are flat-picking observations on "two kinds of justice" in "Million Dollar Bail," recollections of Telly Savalas in the small-town predicaments of "Palookaville," and duets with both buddies (Carlos Guitarlos on "Underneath the Stars") and heroes (Richard Thompson on "Every 24 Hours"). There are no Estes covers, but acclimating Robert Wilkins's 80-year-old "Get Away Blues" is expressively close, as every pluck of the 12-string and lyrical tug from deep inside Case's gut does justice to the late Sleepy John. --Scott Holter

    Album Description

Peter Case is back with Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, his most raw, direct work in nearly a decade. This album of politically fueled songs finds America's golden troubadour in his finest form, laying down sparse, busker-style guitar work over his uniquely delivered dusty road-poetry. Now Let Us Praise Sleepy John is yet another volume in the career of one of the most storied singer/songwriters of his generation. Standard Jewel Case.

Laying waste to all the wink-wink irony, dubious material, and vocal mediocrity that frequently mires alt-country fringe dwellers, the second outing from this Virginia-born belter marries tough, twangy rock with wild, unguarded emotion. Neko's principal charm may be her voice--sometimes coming on with Dusty Springfield's indigo-eyed soul (the dreamlike "Porchlight"), Patsy Cline's aching slow burn (the slinky "No Need to Cry"), and Wanda Jackson's imperious sexuality (the rockabilly "Mood to Burn Bridges")--but her songwriting (she cowrote every tune) is surprisingly consistent and memorable. She celebrates the "passion for life" found in her abandoned home of Tacoma, Washington, or a strapped-on Telecaster, and on her best song, "Guided by Wire," she balances between "darkest recollection" and the freedom of music, the kind that matters most, all those voices "singing my life back to me." --Roy Kasten

    5 out of 5 stars a great album.......2007-08-05

This is far different from the other CD of hers, I have (Fox Confessor Brings the Flood) but equally fabulous in it's own way. In the other one, she's more mellow, and soft sounding, infused with "Americana" if you will. This CD is a whole lot more country, infused with some of that mellow, dreamlike stuff she does, but with a lot of twang and more strength in the sound. One of the songs has some instrumentals that reminded me of a Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn song, which kind of stepped it up a notch for me. This gal can do so much with herself, and does. I think she's the cat's pajamas.

4 out of 5 stars Guided by your electric wire's hum.......2006-08-18

Think of this as a relative endorsement - I've become such a fan of Neko Case in the past year that Furnace Room Lullaby, my first purchase of hers, now seems a fairly subpar Case record, something which is less a criticism than simply a high bar to live up to. There's a wealth of extraordinary songs on Furnace Room Lullaby - the cold echoes of the title track, the invigorating vocal heights of "Set Out Running," the haunted eloquence of "South Tacoma Way." What makes Case's songs so distinct is the way her melodies - as conventional as they'd ever be on this record - seem to invade with spare syllables, making each second of their short running time rattle around your head for days. What make's Furnace Room disappointing in light of the entire Case catalog is its lack of conceptual daring, its sidestepping of the passionate cohesion that elecrifies Blacklisted and Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. Certainly, she was just starting out with this record, but it falls short of her biggest accomplishments. Still, few artists can do what Case does - her powerful vocals and invasive lyrics are already in full swing, and on "Porchlight," she makes what may still be her finest and most singable song - a song whose longing is more memorable than its perfect melody.

5 out of 5 stars Neko Case - Furnace Room Lullaby.......2006-07-10

This is the first CD of Neko Case I have bought. I can't believe I have never heard her on the radio. I heard the title song on a DVD movie and had to check her out. She is a very good singer, and her style is unique. If you like country, but want some variety from the mainstream stuff, this is the singer you should look for.

5 out of 5 stars Forget Shania or Faith.............2006-06-28

After I saw Neko on Breakfast with the Arts on A&E,I bought her newest cd,then bought this one.I haven't been disappointed yet and I doubt if I will be.Neko has the most beautiful and passionate voice out there and puts the Shanias and Faiths to shame..These songs should be radio and not the wannabes that make up most of country today...I mean, shouldn't Neko be more popular than the so- called country starlets that are out now?? In a perfect world, she would be...BUY THIS!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Country-Pop Perfection.......2006-05-06

The cover features a pic of a comatose Neko sprawled out on the gritty floor, red hair pooled around her, as if the victim of a dirty deed. The back features Neko looking guilty, crouching over the body of a knocked-out guy as she rifles through his wallet. Is it any wonder Nick Cave had her open for him on his 2002 North American tour?

Neko's music shares some similarities with Cave in its heartfelt intensity, haunting dark melodies, and occasional rip-roaring debauchery. They diverge at the line between soulful folk balladeer and soulful country pop, the difference between a Leonard Cohen-esque piano ballad and a twanging electric guitar. Neko's "Whip the Blankets" and "Mood to Burn Bridges" are countrified rockabilly rip-stompers. When she snaps "my mood to burn bridges is like my mood to dig ditches," you know you'd better not cross her for fear of ending up in one of those ditches. "South Tacoma Way" is a deeply heartfelt lament for a dead friend or partner that sounds too authentic not to be autobiographical. "Bought and Sold" is a loving but wry look at Neko's hometown of Tacoma, Washington, which has steadfastly resisted development and big-box stores for years. "God bless California, make way for the Wal-Mart," Neko sings, "I hope they don't find you, Tacoma."

Then there's her voice. With Loretta Lynn twang, Patsy Cline throb, and Dusty Springfield soul, Neko has a voice big enough to fill a canyon. The album opener, "Set Out Running," is the most soulful country song about trying to outrun heartbreak that I've ever heard. When Neko belts out, "The springs inside the mattress will cry my dirty secrets; I just can't shake this feeling that I'm nothing in your eyes," it stops my heart every time. The gorgeous, haunting title track, "Furnace Room Lullaby," was featured on the soundtrack to the movie The Gift, with Cate Blanchett playing a spirit medium in the deep south, outwitting abusive boyfriends and vengeful ghosts. Neko's atmospheric song was a perfect choice. The lovely, weepy "Porchlight" is another cry-in-your-wineglass classic ("sorry to tread on your patience, my dear; my heart might be willing by this time next year; I can't make you wait `cause I long to be forgiven"). "No Need to Cry" harks back to Patsy Cline's romantic countrypolitan leanings of the late `50s/early `60s, and it's great to sing along with in the car.

With her classic song structures and big voice, it's no surprise that Neko wrote a song about her influences. "Guided By Wire" tells of salvation through the radio, of the voices of songwriters and performers, new and old, who have influenced and guided Neko through her life and career. "Even in my darkest recollection," she sings, "there was someone singing my life back to me." Neko has been there for me in the very same way on many a road trip, hectic work commute, trip to the corner grocery.... Pop this CD in your car stereo and take Neko along for the ride. She'll provide some much-needed comfort on those hairpin turns, lonely roads to nowhere, and any time you need some soulful countrified pop to give more meaning to your day.

The songs on "Unearthed" pay homage to ancient cultures with their titles (Cuzco, Pompeii, Harrapa, and Ebia), yet they are as contemporary as Deep Forest and Enigma and attract the same kind of fan. The music is at one moment dark and choral and at another light and airy; one moment you're in Greece and then in Ireland or South America. It's a film score, clearly cinematic, but there's no movie - rather there are the dozens of movies and movie trailers in which the music has appreaed. If you've watched Six Feet Under, the NFL or the US Open, you've heard their music. If you watch CBS's hit series "Cold Case" on Sunday nights, you've heard one of the most extraordinary theme songs ever, and it's the track "Nara". If you are even an occasional filmgoer, you've heard the music on "UNEARTHED"

This is the best CD I've ever listened to in my life! Absolutely incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Distinct but lacking.......2006-12-01

'Unearthed' is one of those albums that invigorates initially, but eventually shows its true colors after its artificial guise no longer appears to fool. It's a classic tale of style over substance.

This is pop music, with a twist. Or so it seems. It's not a bad strategy, really, and by and large it's reasonably successful at what it is (not to be confused with what it aspires to be). Combine some modern musical sensibilities (I'd be at a loss to label them specifically) and throw in a theatrical chorus, or strings, to add a level of authenticity to the whole thing. To their credit, they even sprinkle us with a few other obscure instruments, again adding to the flavor and relative distinctness the album displays. Pretty neat, right? Sure -- if only that impression lasted. The downfall of the music, then, originates out of the realization that it's heftily elementary for the majority of its length (it not -- all -- of it); both in terms of melody and general orchestration, the dynamic appearance resting on the surface melts away fast. Don't try to bamboozle (some of) us with your "distinguished" demeanor. Normally, I wouldn't have too much a problem with something attempting to appear more than it is, but E.S. Posthumus just seem too self-indulgent and righteous -- unjustly so.

The first track here sums up the largest problem here -- redundancy. Yes, I do yearn for a bit more complexity in my music, but again, this --is-- pop, and I'll openly admit that I adore a huge amount of pop amongst the vast array of its spectrum. What I don't enjoy is hearing something over and over and over, within a SINGLE song, let alone all the songs on the album. These guys' just don't have many ideas -- which is seemingly why they attempt to mask the fact with overbearing bombast. The first song repeats the first two minutes two times, with almost no variation after that two minute mark, and this approach can't even begin to justify their shallower nature. It almost seems strangely humbling, because while their use of more exotic elements is deceptive, they don't even try to hide the vacuousness of their musical ideas; it seems like they don't give a rats behind about their uncreative tendency, as it's so glaringly noticeable in structure or musicality, as if they just sort of said "oh well" and let it effortlessly fly. Again, all of the tracks bear this problem -- some to a lesser to degree than others -- and while they write some fetching melodies, they're simply not good enough to provide a song with a strong base, not to mention having to hear most of them three or so times within a single track makes them more irritating than they really are.

I don't mean to sound so harsh, because 'Unearthed' would be a welcome addition to most people out there (if only they knew it existed), and despite mildly trivializing the more filmic aspects it employs, it would at least expose them to a fairly half-baked presentation of these types of music. It may be pop, but amongst its pretty substantial problems, it's at least peculiar and reasonably passionate pop, even if it thinks it's more than that. That's worth something.

5 out of 5 stars Unearted in unbelievable.......2006-11-10

Wonderful album designed for the cinema, and it comes to no suprise that almost every track on this album has been used in several movies. E.S. Posthumus use great samples and beutifully mix them in with their string scores.

5 out of 5 stars .. As it should be.......2006-07-11

This is music as it should be... but sometimes i am glad it isn't. for if this became "popular" it would devalue the word, Music. thank you E.S. Posthumus for your contribution to a greater art.
