4 out of 5 stars A Jimi Hendrix experience with a difference.......2007-05-21

I bought this CD a long while ago when bands like the Spin Doctors and PM Dawn were "in". I liked it then and I still do now. Let me make one thing clear: I`m a true Hendrix fan. I have a lot of his output, even hardcore stuff like South Saturn Delta. However I also have RHCP, Tool, Audioslave, Pearl Jam in my stack, so I'm no refusenik. What I like about this CD is its at times liberal interpretations of JH classics, which basically all the tracks are. Reprise could easily have done a double CD in fact, but you takes what you gets. Some of the tracks are fairly true to the original, my favourites in this department being Bodycount's smoking Hey Joe and Slash's/Paul Rodger's blazing remake of I Don't Live Today, while others, like The Cure's version of Purple Haze, go in a completely different but nevertheless interesting direction. Nigel Kennedy would not get on the CD if they did it today, but there you go. Jimi was a free spirit and reinterpreted stuff he liked by others in his own unique way which didn't go down well with everyone in the late 60s. The BBC for example: there's one 60s session I love where you can hear the sound engineer complaining along the lines "It's no good Mr Hendrix, I`m just getting too much distortion here". I'm sure he'd have been flattered by this outpouring of appreciation.

3 out of 5 stars Odd line up.......2007-03-31

A strange tribute to the great Jimi Hendrix. There are simply not enough guitar players featured here ... which seems odd, no? However, Jeff Beck's playing on Manic Depression is worth the price of the album. He is someone that can play the guitar in the same free spirit as Jimi Hendrix, he is a true artist that, like Hendrix, follows his heart and not the corporate mentality. Too bad much of this album is not like that.

5 out of 5 stars STONEFREE: A TRIBUTE TO JIMI HENDRIX.......2007-02-24

AWESOME! THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY HENDRIX FAN AND A MUST FOR ANY MUSIC LOVER.

4 out of 5 stars Homage to Hendrix.......2007-02-13

The impressive array of musicians on this tribute album deliver the goods, although some interpretations are a bit bizarre, like Nigel Kennedy's violin dance on Fire. Robert Smith and The Cure's synth-driven version of Purple Haze is another strange one. These two tracks are certainly innovative but there's nothing of the master guitarist's spirit in them.

I Don't Live Today by Band of Gypsys, Paul Rodgers and Slash sound very authentic, and Chrissie Hynde's rendition of (Axis) Bold As Love is spectacular. I also like Eric Clapton's powerful interpretation of Stone Free. Another highlight is Third Stone From The Sun by Pat Metheny, an enjoyable jazz-funk take on the classic.

Some of Hendrix's more obscure songs are ably covered by PM Dawn, Spin Doctors and Buddy Guy, whilst Manic Depression as done by Seal and Jeff Beck is quite memorable, as is Hey Joe by Ice T and Bodycount. MACC's awesome version of Hey Baby (Land Of The New Rising Sun) and Living Colour's Crosstown Traffic are gems. Hendrix would have been proud.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Collection.......2006-05-20

Nobody's a bigger Hendrix fan than I am, and I still think this is an excellent collection of updated arrangements. Purple Haze by the Cure and Bold as Love by the Pretenders are superb. In fact, the numbers that are closest to sounding like the original--Stone Free and Manic Depression--are the least interesting. The musicians did a great job on this recording, and I'd recommend it to anybody.

5 out of 5 stars Just As Profound As Jimi Hendrix!!!.......2005-09-13

WARNING! YOU MAY FIND THIS REVIEW TO HAVE SOME SPOILERS--I HIGHLY RECCOMEND YOU LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM!!!

Believe it or not, this album is truly a masterpiece! It was very maturely, and innovatively done, and will be appreciated by both lovers of classical and Jimi Hendrix (and, of course, good music!) It is by far one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. The album is a mix of acoustic and electric string instruments (traditional, no adulterating guitar) and it has a very classical/asian sound overall. The whole album has a very full, robust, bassy tone, unlike the Led Zeppelin tribute (which sucks! Both of them--DON'T SUBJECT YOURSELF TO THEM!) which is all-acoustic and nothing but weak, squeaky, violin. This album has both cello and double bass (bowed, of course) I believe. Their are three highlights, and they are:

1.) Third Stone From the Sun
2.) Bold As Love
3.) Castles Made of Sand

Third Stone From the Sun is, by far, the most classical sounding, and, at the same time, mind-blowing, track (it will leave you in a stupor). The original track, which is largely trippy sound-effects, is rendered well. This is also, without question, the most electric track on the album, as, not long into the song, there emerges an unreal slur of distortion from the bowed electric instruments...sigh...and what a glorious ending...

Let's move on to my next favorite...Bold As Love...

This track immediately follows Third Stone (that track placement is just beautiful!) Throughout the song, there's one guy in the backround who, as my friend described it, is just sawing away on the violin. Eventually it bursts into a screeching electric solo. The rendition of the "fireworks" ending is not only note-for-note, but the sound is bent and distorted exactly the way it is in the original. It's the icing on top of the cake my friends, and it's a real treat!

Castle's Made of Sand is, as are the previous two, amazing. It has a very unique, asian-sound to it. Everything is adapted, including the psychedelic intro and outro (and it just sounds so mind-bending when done on the violin!) It sounds like they're using an esraj or dilruba (two exotic, unconventional indian instruments, which are like bowed sitars--both are very similar to each other) for the little solo in the middle and on the five/ten second intro/outro. It's definitely not a violin, and it sounds very, very asian. They also add a little twist to the end by hitting the notes really high (you'll hear what I'm talking about!)

Those are, in my opinion, the three most profound adaptations. That's not to say the others aren't! They extend Little Wing, making it almost six minutes long--adding some really warped string effects! There's a cry-baby violin at the end of up-from the skies. Stone Free is definitely one of the heaviest (sounds like someone's striking and bowing the the electric cello or double-bass every few seconds in the backround!), especially with the elctric violin solo!

I do, however, have one bone to pick. Manic Depression was completely changed! They took away the sound and made it sound like some tribal Native American dance--which isn't bad, but it's not upbeat like the original. I wish they'd done as good a job on this song as they did the others as it's one of my top picks for Hendrix songs. Don't be afraid of this album, it's not a disgrace to Jimi Hendrix. The opposite in fact. It's worth your money, and it deserves five big stars. It's surprisingly unpopular, which is a shame...Ironicaly I didn't even buy this album. A guy I knew burned it for me, but I like it so much that I'm gonna order it tonight! Heh. Well, happy listening!

3 out of 5 stars Not as "revelating" as it could have been.......2005-07-02

If you go through the series of String Quartet tributes to various artists you really wonder if the compiler was a psycho, there is no logic at all, one would expect either giving more relevance to intrinsic artistic value or simply choosing the most successful artists in a hope to sell well. On the contrary you have a random selection which leave you bemused. However, there are a few interesting ones and by this I mean when the sheer beauty of the songs should be matched, one thinks, by the adaptability to a String Quartet format. The Jimi Hendrix one was obviously one of the more interesting on paper, if only to prove once again that he wasn't merely the greatest rock guitar of all times but also a rather dignified musician who could have given the world other masterpieces had he not succumbed to excessive drug use. Especially interesting for those familiar with the relatively famous jazz "treatment" given to some of his songs by Gil Evans, an experiment in some cases very successful. The problem with both is that, of course, you can't help but miss Jimi's guitar and you are sometimes frustrated by thinking what could have been The String Quartet WITH Jimi Hendrix or, in the other case, what were like the endless jams that Jimi played with John McLaughlin or what could have been the much-talked collaboration with Miles Davis. But I'm beating about the bush, so to talk about this album I'll just say that the choice of tracks is inevitably good, even if I resent the absence of any tracks from Electric Ladyland, that the playing is good and at times inspired, that the songs that translate better are the ones originally less centered around Jimi's solo (the standout for me is Bold as love) and that the arrangements are a little bit sedate. All in all, not a must for Jimi's fans but a tasteful addition to a slim discography (that is if you take out the posthumous albums).

4 out of 5 stars Imagination with Hendrix runs wild!!! Well worth getting........2004-05-24

If your like me, your music tastes run the gamut. I can listen to opera, jazz, funk, rap and then rock without missing a beat. I just plain love music.

I especially love Jimi Hendrix. I saw this CD in a used bin and I thought I'd give it a whirl. Wow. This isnt some warmed over version of Jimi's music. It is a string quartet interpretation of Jimi's music. While an ardent fan will of course recognize the songs, my friends who have not been, ahem, musically educated think that this is a new classical album. When they are confronted with his Jiminess they are surprised and often pleasantly so.

Highlights for me include "Manic Depression", "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary (I think the it is the standout track)."
Overall, if you like classical music, and Jimi Hendrix, I think you will like this collection. It is imaginative to say the least, and stands as a fine work of classical style art. Also, it confirms to me that Jimi Hendrix was a fine music composer who stands with the all time greats!

Description

Formed in 1995 by the family of the legendary guitarist, Experience Hendrix has earned wide praise for its restoration of the Jimi Hendrix catalog and efforts to expand the legacy of one of popular music's greatest artists. Janie Hendrix, president and CEO of Experience Hendrix, remains steadfast in efforts to protect the guitarist's legacy. "We will continue to safeguard Jimi's incredible musical legacy as best as we can, making it available to fans with the best possible quality." As a result of this unique focus on expanding Hendrix's profile, interest in Jimi Hendrix remains at an all-time high. The most recent Experience Hendrix DVD release, Jimi Plays Berkeley, debuted on the Billboard video chart at #9. Other releases by the company have enjoyed similar praise and commercial success. Rolling Stone called The Jimi Hendrix Experience, a four-CD box set issued in September 2000, "the Rolls Royce of box sets," and the Band Of Gypsys: Live At The Fillmore East earned a GRAMMY® Award in 2000 for Best Long Form Music Video. The theatrical film Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight has enjoyed wide critical approval and was featured as part of the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center. Songs include: Are You Experienced (Musiq), Spanish Castle Magic (Santana), Purple House (Prince), The Wind Cries Mary (Sting), Voodoo Chile [Slight Return] (Earth, Wind & Fire), Power Of Soul (Bootsy Collins featuring George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars), Burning of the Midnight Lamp (Eric Clapton), Have You Ever Been [To Electric Ladyland] (Lenny Kravitz), Who Knows (Devoted Spirits featuring George Duke), Purple Haze (Robert Randolph & The Family Band), Little Wing (Chaka Khan & Kenny Olson), Castles Made of Sand (Sounds of Blackness), May This Be Love (Eric Gales), Foxy Lady (Cee-Lo), Red House (John Lee Hooker), Little Wing/3rd Stone From The Sun (Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble).

4 out of 5 stars Last word on the poser Prince.......2006-09-20

The other reviewers have covered the quality of this tribute - it has to be the best of the many that have been attempted. Jimi's legacy to rock music and his impact is still growing (listen to the guitar work on the new Chili Pepper's lp for instance). Unfortunately - the poser Prince is on this tribute cd. FYI - ladies and gentlemen - many, many years ago - around the time Purple Rain was released, I saw an interview with Prince on TV. In that interview he proclaimed to the interviewer and the world, and I quote, "I'm a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix EVER was....". Now the only response I had at that time (once my dropped jaw left the floor and returned to it's normal position) was to walk over to my coffee table, pick up my copy of the Purple Rain LP, and smash it to bits against the corner of the table. It felt good. I gather when Prince cashed his check for his egotistical contribution of "Purple House" he neglected to mention his previous comments about Jimi. Prince - what a poser and a fraud and a has been that never was. Jimi was the best

5 out of 5 stars Both powerful and souful--my first and probably only Hendrix collaboration tribute.......2006-02-13

I don't generally buy various artist tribute CDs, but the disk was on half-price and the lineup of artists covering Jimi was too good to pass up. I'm especially impressed that this is a multiracial, multinational, and multigenerational cast, which really makes up Jimi's fanbase. Two complaints: I know Prince's thing is Purple, but change the title of the song to Purple House--sorry, it just loses something there. And, I'd really have loved to see Angelique Kidjo on this CD doing her version of "VooDoo Child."

5 out of 5 stars POWER OF SOUL - JIMI HENDRIX'S MUSIC.......2005-07-08

I think this cd was very good. I especially liked Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana, and Bootsy's versions of Jimi's songs. It was an over all worthwhile experience.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet for a 'tribute' album, the best of its kind.......2005-04-06

Tribute albums are usually a mixed affair, and few really hold up as albums, but this one comes close. It succeeds on so many levels for several reasons. First, the man it pays tribute to, Jimi Hendrix, is an indisputable legend; his reputation is so widespread, kids who've never heard his music know who he is. So not surprisingly, he's had an enormous influence on a wide variety of musicians, which brings us to a second reason why this collection succeeds: the participating musicians. The line-up here is so impressive because each artist is so different from the other, yet each one has some connection to him, either as a collaborator, as an artist he influenced, or as a friend.

Organized by the Hendrix estate, this disc has plenty of highlights: "Purple House" by Prince and former Sly & the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham showcases Prince's amazing guitar skills - the best track, and from an artist who, like Hendrix, managed to be a great innovator and commercial success while crossing the barrier between rock and r&b. Carlos Santana and Living Colour's Corey Glover perform an excellent cover of "Spanish Castle Magic," with an inspired jazz rhythm section: bassist Stanley Clarke and the late, great Tony Williams, arguably the greatest drummer of all-time. Elsewhere, Sting sings and plays bass on a cover of "The Wind Cries Mary," which has some searing guitar work by John McLaughlin; George Clinton and Bootsy Collins (of Parliament/Funkadelic/etc.) shake it up with "Power of Soul," Chaka Khan and Kid Rock's guitarist Kenny Olson do a strong version of "Little Wing," the late, great blues legend John Lee Hooker covers "Red House" (actually a track from a previous John Lee CD; he passed away before he could record something new, so they selected this as a tribute to him as well), and an awesome live recording of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble performing "Little Wing" and "3rd Stone..." from Oct, 20, 1983 in Philadelphia for the King Biscuit Flour Hour. Granted, none of these covers 'surpass' the originals, and there are some mild disappointments, like an Eric Clapton/Chic collaboration on "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp" (a real letdown) and Lenny Kravitz's contribution, but as tributes go, this is surprisingly good, the kind you'll actually listen to again.

1 out of 5 stars Hendrix is rolling in is grave.......2005-01-08

This album is very very bad. If Hendrix were still alive we would thorw it out with the garbage. Artsits like Clapton, Santana, Hooker, and Vaughn, make decent efforts but still should not have even attempted. Tribute albums almost always suck, and this one files right into line. Artists like Cee-Lo and Lenny Kravitz (who has immatated Hendrix for years, very very poorly i might add) have no business on this album at all. Hendrix was more than a legend, he was a God. and for these artists to make these terrible covers is blasphemy. I hope that if you area true Jimi H4endrix fan that you do not buy this album.

I guess I'd lump this into the "Typical Hendrix Tribute Disc" bin. When I saw the list of musicians performing on it, I had really high hopes. A few of the songs approached my expectations but on average, I found too many of them to be lackluster and sort of generally uninspired. For example, I'd hoped for an incredible "I Don't Live Today" from Pat Travers and instead got a so-so reading. I liked Lukather's 3rd Stone and part of Larry Corylell's House Burning Down plus parts of a few others but overall, I just wasn't moved by the mix.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for all lovers of funky jazz and/or Jimi Hendrix.......2004-06-24

Take three outstanding musicians, give them some great Jimi Hendrix tunes as a starting point, and then simmer and cook until done!

This record is terrific, and unlike anything you've ever heard before. The funky organ sounds of Dr. Lonnie Smith (remember, he is *not* the same guy as Lonnie Liston Smith), the jazz-rock jamming guitar sounds of John Abercrombie (who sounds here like he is channeling a mix of Hendrix, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin)and the funky, always-on-it drums of Smitty Smith. Each song is about 10-12 minutes in length, so if you're looking for breezy, short rock tunes, don't buy this record. But for everyone else, give a listen!

4 out of 5 stars Great album -- smooth jazz improv. with a hint of Hendrix.......1998-11-16

This album is basically the result of three great jazz musicians playing interpretations of famous Hendrix songs. Although none of the songs sound exacly like the Hendrix versions (they weren't meant to), the basic grooves are still there. All of the misicians are incredible, and the sounds they create are beautiful -- from the smooth sound of the guitar, to the brash sound of the Hammond B-3 through a distorted leslie speaker (and not to mention a strong percussion backing). I do not generally listen to jazz music, but I love this album, and I think other Hendrix/Lonnie Smith Trio fans will to. (The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the length of the songs -- all four songs are about ten minutes long, but other people may not mind long songs).

5 out of 5 stars Three Master Musicians .......2006-10-08

This is a fine companion to the first Cd by these guys 'Purple Haze' .. These guys are masters of their respective instruments ,all are legends in their own right .. their interpretations on both discs of Jimi's stuff is a very nice listen ..John does not play like Jimi ,John is John , and what a fine guitarist he is..His ECM work is wonderful , especially when teamed with Charles Lloyd . I like the track 'Jimi Meets Miles' on this disc .. makes you wonder ..boy , if only they could have got together in the studio! Great Jazz Power Trio here!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a Hendrix imitation, but a fine tribute.......2003-02-12

Four lengthy interpretations of Hendrix tunes by a relaxed trio of John Abercrombie, Lonnie Smith, and Marvin Smith--this second effort by the trio lags behind their first, less atmospheric effort. Abercrombie retains his identity while spooling out tasty lines of dissonance and happy threads of jazzy melody. But it is Smith who most impresses, pulverizing with abrupt keyboard washes from Mars, while still maintaining a groove and a direction.

1 out of 5 stars GIVE ME A BREAK. , AND ONCE AGAIN NOOOOO STARS?.......1999-05-04

I GUESS AT THIS POINT THE GREAT POPULARITY OF JIMI HENDRIX, THIRTY YEARS AFTER THE FACT, IS NOW SUBJECT TO ANYONE THAT WANTS TO RECORD AND USE HIS GREATNESS TO DECIEVE MUSIC LOVERS. I GUESS JOE PESCHI IS NEXT IN LINE!

I would think these guys hated the music of muddy waters & Hendrix by hearing this example of their work. There is nothing inventive here, just NOISE! It`s live,& I guess recorded in a bar.Maybe if you get yourself REAL POLLUTED it will appeal? If you must have a tribute CD of Hendrix, try the "beautiful people"~"if 60`s were 90`s". You might hate this too, but at least it`s inventive. Better yet, just stick to the real thing.

    2 out of 5 stars Countering Those 5-Star Reviews.......2004-04-08

I collect not only Hendrix music but also Hendrix tributes and was pretty shocked to see three 5-star reviews on this disc. I could be talked into giving this one 3 stars, but that's about it. It just doesn't move me. Jimi tributes are always an uphill battle in my opinion. Artists often avoid trying to play a song similar to the way Jimi played it and it's easy to see why - just who are you going to get that can touch the feel he put into the guitar playing and singing?

Don't get me wrong - I'm a bigtime fan of Band of Gypsys and have no axe to grind with Buddy at all. I'm so happy he was there to help Jimi out in '69 and '70 when he was so in need of TLC. But this disc just does not, to me, evoke the soul of Jimi as much as I'd expected.

5 out of 5 stars Buddys groove thing.......2002-10-22

An excellent live album! It features Buddy on drums/lead vocals with only a guitarist and bassist backing him up. A powerhouse trio. And powerhouse they are! Buddy has never been a technical master of the drums but he has one of the best solid backbeats in the business and he can sing and play at the same time which is a big plus! The guitarist on this album is Great! He is no Jimi Hendrix but he knows how to achieve the right tone and feel for each song. He plays his own style without trying to copy Hendrix. The Bass guitarist is by far one of the best Funk Rock players on the planet. His solos on a couple of tunes are a joy to listen to.{slap funk style}He also helps with the vocals. These guys are so tight it sounds as if they played together since they were kids. Put three top notch musicians on stage with tons of energy combined with heartfelt playing and the result is what you will hear on this recording. I do have two complaints. The vocals should have been recorded louder, and I dont care for the Beatles version of come together.Final thoughts: Lots of Great Funk Rock to be heard here! For fans of live recordings this one is a must! To any Bass players out there check this one out! Enjoy!

Great CD. I loved Jimi & Buddy's interplay in the BOGs, and Buddy brings his heart out, playing for his friend.
