All highs and no lows!.......2007-01-04
If your a fan of close vocal harmonies and great arrangements you'll really enjoy this recording. And if the vocal arranging sounds familiar, it's because Gene Puerling (baritone, I think) did most of the writing for this group. You may be more familiar with his writing for the Singers Unlimited as well as his prevalent influence on the debut recording of the jazz vocal group, Take 6.
Also worth mentioning is the tremendous performance by the members of the Frank Comstock Orchestra. As a trumpet player, I would love to know who was on that session becaause they're all amazing!
Elegant Kitsch.......2000-11-23
As a fan of standards in vocal jazz (Biiiiilllie!), and contemporary vocally-oriented music (i.e. Zap Mama, Bobby Mc Happy) the Hi-Lo's are a real treat- a singular American listening experience. Yes, there is the unavoidable mid-century kitsch factor, but who doesn't appreciate the pure artistic value of Herb Alpert every now and again? Truthfully, the Hi-Lo's unwaivering voices and sensitive arrangements bubble new breadth into old standards, with all the freshness of a tasty loaf of Wonder Bread. Try to listen to the Hi-Lo's with the same keen sagacity you would John Coltrane (or better yet McCoy Tyner)

If one needed an object lesson in the fickle nature of Hollywood and its precipitously shifting tastes, one could do worse than to examine the career of the songwriting brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. After inventing veritable swaths of Disney's musical theme park, TV, and film legacies in the '50s and '60s (including Zorro, The Sword in the Stone, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book), the brothers found their talents largely underemployed in TV and film efforts after the death of Walt Disney. It isn't to say that their talents were in the least diminished, as this soundtrack to the 1976 U.K.-produced live-action adaptation of Cinderella ably attests. Fans of the Shermans' Disney canon should find this soundtrack restoration a welcome addition to their collections. The Shermans' music is a familiar, effervescent delight, even as it tackles the full emotional spectrum of romantic and familial entanglements, from Prince Edward's existential ponderings in "Why Can't I Be Two People?" through the king's Gilbert & Sullivan-esque take on royal bureaucracy in "Protocologically Correct" to the romantic pinings of "Secret Kingdom" and "He Danced with Me." The Slipper and the Rose is a musical cult favorite, and for good reason. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
I love this!.......2007-01-14
I love this soundtrack! If you are a fan of the movie, you will really enjoy this. There is only one disappointing thing about this soundtrack.
While all of the songs with words are there, most of the background music is missing. There is the overture and the waltz theme, but no other background music. I was particularly disappointed in the absence of the music from the wedding.
Despite this, I am very glad I have purchased this CD and high recommend it.
a wish come true.......2006-11-04
I'm so happy this soundtrack is no longer out of print. The movie is one of my favorite musicals and all the music from the movie is wonderful!
Memories Return.......2006-06-24
This has to be one of my favorite musicals. And that's saying something. I remember watching the movie with my mom when I was little. When I purchased and played the cd, that all came back. Mom and I busted out singing, "Protocoligorically correct", practically cracking up through half of it; and enjoying the romantic theme "He/she danced w/me"!
The sound recording was well pitched, loud enough to hear, and there wasn't anything fuzzy. This I was very grateful for. I look forward to one day playing it for my daughter so she'll enjoy it to.
Prince Charming and Cinderella.......2005-09-11
I know the beautiful movie and I wished to have the soundtrack. Now I bought it and I am happy. It is a great CD, the actors give the best and the music is very romantic. I recommend the CD.
EXHILARATING! ENERGETIC! ENCHANTING!.......2004-07-11
THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE is a most EXHILARATING CD, with crisp, catchy, tunes that cause one's heart to be made cheerful! "Why Can't I Be Two People", "Protocologorically Correct", and "Position and Positioning", are songs that I have found marvelously ENERGIZING! I work in a stressful medical environment, and on a dreary day, I slipped this CD into the office CD player, to discover an amazingly, invigorating phenomenon. The stressed out office staff began whistling and humming the tunes....a few even danced down the halls of our clinic, which can be a bit disconcerting when you have specimens in both hands. As the employees got happier, attitudes and energy levels soared! It was exciting to watch the merriment as staff sang and danced along to "Suddenly It Happens", and "What A Comforting Thing To Know". The love songs sung by Richard Chamberlain and Gemma Craven, "Secret Kingdom", "He/She Danced With Me", and "I Can't Forget The Melody", are hauntingly romantic songs, guaranteed to ENCHANT even the hardest heart. This is one of my favorite CD's of all time. The Sherman Brothers outdid themselves; creating a masterpiece that EXHILARATES, ENERGIZES, ENCHANTS.......and occasionally, on a dreary, stressful day, causes the heavy hearts of listeners, to be transformed and ultimately to transcend.

Back to when I believed in fairy tales...........2002-09-30
If you could, just for a moment, return to the days when fairy godmothers were real, when you really could turn four white mice into four white horses - then just buy this CD for a few smiles, a lot of memories, and the original Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes. This CD took me way back to when magic was there, and now it makes me wonder, everytime I listen to it, if maybe the magic isn't still there? Maybe I should just call on my fairy godmother..... A true heirloom of a CD.
The Glass Slipper Fits!.......2001-04-21
This is an excellent compilation of songs that express the longings, fears and exuberance of the Cinderella story. Rather than just relying of the romantic side of the myth, producer Bruce Kimmel adds depth to the story by including songs from The Slipper and The Rose and Sondheim's Into the Woods as well as the Disney and Roger & Hammerstein Cinderella versions.
When Susan Egan plans her strategy in "Promise Him Anything" and Pamela Winslow expresses her fear in "On the Steps of the Palace," the listener becomes aware of Cinderella's human side. Likewise, when Christa Moore shares her fantasy world "In My Own Corner" and Christina Noll expresses her thrill of her dream coming true in "Impossible/Suddenly It Happens," the listener is reminded of the powerful message of Cinderella's theme: dreams DO come true.
Fortunately, the compilation does not exclude humor as well. "The Stepsister's Lament" by Farah Alvin and Alet Oury is hilariously poignant; the lyrics "Why would a fellow want a girl like her? A frail and frocky beauty!" could be the alltime wallflowers' lament. And Jonathan Freeman's "What Has Love Got to Do with Getting Married?" is a droll piece of practical cynicism to his Prince son. (The song reminds me of the film Moonstruck. When Olympia DuKakis asks her daughter Cher, "Do you love him?" When Cher answered affirmatively, her mother muttered, "That's bad.")
Also, the musical bridges add to the suspense of the Cinderella story. "Midnight", "The Ball," and "If The Shoe Fits" from Prokofiev's ballet are beautifully orchestrated and remind the listener that the Cinderella myth is adaptable for many forms of entertainment.
I was a little disappointed that "So This is Love" and "The Work Song" was not included, but I guess I'm partial to the Disney version. The 1950 cartoon was my first introduction to Cinderella, and to my delight, my nephew enjoyed it as well thirty years later.
Nevertheless, this CD shows the timeless appeal of the Cinderella myth. Its beauty, humor and suspense is contained here in this magnificent collection.
Magical collection fit for a princess!.......1999-04-13
I was thrilled to come across this collection. One of my favorite movies, The Slipper and the Rose, had been out of print for many years. This CD includes 4 of the songs from that movie and though not by the original artists, just as good. The songs range from the whimsical to the romantic to a few comic gems, all from various stage and film Cinderella scores. "Tell Him Anything" from the Slipper and the Rose, a powerful song filled with longing and despair is sung movingly by Susan Egan, a nice change of pace from the cheerier, more sparkling numbers.
The score from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is so charming and catchy it's fun to hear it again by new artists. The performers, all apparently Broadway singers (?), are all beautifully performed with exuberance and style. The orchestration is lush and appropriate to the material.
Fabuloso!!!! A must have!!!!.......1998-08-11
This is an AWESOME cd. It has songs from the original Rodgers and Hammerstein version, the Disney version, and Into the Woods. This is a faboulos collection of songs. Definetly buy it. NOW!!!!!

This compilation features excerpts from some of the greatest sacred works in the literature--including Bach's Mass in B Minor, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Missa solemnis, and Verdi's Requiem--all led by Robert Shaw. The selections, from recordings made between 1983 and 1997 by Shaw and various ensembles including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, are presented more or less in order of their composition, from Vivaldi's Gloria to Arvo Pärt's Magnificat. Especially thrilling is the complete "Gloria" from the Missa solemnis, 17 minutes of sheer grandeur, and the Sanctus movements from the Requiems of Verdi and Maurice Duruflé. --Ted Libbey

I enjoyed this CD very much. It is just beautiful music.
Robert Shaw Choruses At Their Best!.......2004-09-20
If Sir Robert were still alive, & breathing, I believe he would be caught-up making music with this awesome, majestic, mystical GLORIA, Sanctus, Hallelujah Masterworks! I lucked-up on this old collection in the few classical CD'S in Best Buy!
At first hearing they sent me back into the 1970's when most of Church Musicians majored in Vivaldi's Gloria, the Sanctus of Bach's B-Minor Mass, the Long, georgeous GLORIA, Missa Solemnis, Beethoven, and incomparable Alleluia by Randall Thompson.
During a visit of Hurricane IVAN'S rushing winds and torrents of rain, I stayed on back roads of Decatur and East Atlanta! Also keeping alert & relaxed listening to Robert Shaw re-inventing his Choral Mystique! In slowly moving traffic of 2++ hours to Fayetteville, I kept alert singing along at 30 mph, wrapped in his quiet heavenly beauty of Koplov's "Heavenly Light!"
That mysteriously spiritual power of glorious choruses provided the same resourceful sounds of his eternal music-making from rehearsals in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Westminster Choir College and Avery Fischer Hall concerts in NYC! (1975-1985)
Only the early 33 1/3 recordings of the Robert Shaw Chorale in his Spirituals and Irish Songs, later Handel's Messiah and Bach B-Minor Mass were forerunners to his awesome listing of repeated Grammy winners, now printed in digital stereo color and sound! Hooray for Sir Robert and his rich chorale legacy... Let's keep them singing for Eternity! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Glorious.......2000-06-30
If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's Gloria or portions of Handel's Messiah, one cannot help but become enthralled with the recordings of Shaw's interpretations of those works. Although Shaw never followed through on his early-life ambition to be a minister, I still believe he does so and perhaps to a greater extent through his music ministry. One cannot help but feel closer to understanding what heaven is about after having finished listening to this CD. This is well worth buying for it will live up to the english interpretation of its Latin title: Glorious.

Urban Ocean.......2007-03-21
That trademark funky urban and danceable soul of the 80's seemed to flourish starting around 1983 and into `84-85. You know what I'm talking about; The Pointer Sisters, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Ready For The World....it goes on and on. One of the forerunners of this magnificent genre of music in the 80's was none other than Caribbean-born Billy Ocean. One listen to that voice and you know who it is. He kind of sings with a deep richness like when you say "Ah" when the doctor is looking into your throat. I mean he really brings up the vocals from deep down. And yet he can reach the higher notes. His voice is so flexible and flawless and grooves along with every song, never missing a beat. In 1984, Billy came out with a remarkable album in "Suddenly," one of those albums that is a staple of the early 80's genre of funky urban and danceable soul. It is nostalgic, yet very timeless in my opinion and it takes me back to when times were a little less stressful.
"Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run)" - This is my favorite song from the album and hit the Billboard top 10 of 1984. Check out the groovy bass and jazzy saxophone! And those cute repetitive keyboard notes with the funky foot stomping beat are pretty darn cool! Oh yeah, and the sound effects to go with the lyrics are fun to listen to. There is magnificent orchestration here and the song is overall urban funky melodic fun. Billy's vocals are passionate with an urgency. This Caribbean queen has him losing his cool.
"Mystery Lady" - This is just your basic urban R&B funky song. It's very catchy and Billy's notes are flawless. The keyboards are cool and the harmonizing is fun. I love this song. Kick back and bop your head and let your mind drift.
"Syncopation" - Slowing it up a little, Billy gives us a smooth funky beat to chill out with. Billy sings of missing the "syncopation" he had with a certain woman who was having an affair.
"The Long And Winding Road" - Smooth, graceful and soft. Billy's rich vocals amongst easy-going melodies provide the perfect opportunity for a slow dance.
"Loverboy" - I absolutely love this song. The beat is like a funk-dance urban R&B disco-like groove. You cannot help but move on this song. Billy's vocals are soaring amongst the edgy, melodic guitars that keep the time just right. The synths/keyboards mirror the urgency that Billy is singing about; the intense need to be someone's love. This is one of the most addicting songs on the album. Is it any wonder that this song reached the Billboard top ten of 1985?
"Lucky Man" - Cute, catchy song featuring some nice piano, synths and a funky beat. Billy sings of being lucky to have the woman he has. Nothing too special about this song.
"Dancefloor" - True, this is a danceable song. Cool synths and that hand-slapping beat. Just a nice easy-going song. Nothing huge.
"If I Should Lose You" - Another easy-going song; and smooth with atmospheric and melodic keyboarding. Billy grooves along with his vocals as usual.
"Suddenly" - This is probably one of Billy's trademark love songs; beautiful and free-flowing. Billy's vocals are so silky and magnificent. It's a song about how life has new meaning once you find that love you've been looking for. It's just romantic and perfect for that special occasion.
Okay, so you know what to do now. Plunge into the "ocean" and get the goods! You won't be disappointed.
His best album........2006-05-08
Truth be known, I'd probably keep this over his "Hits" disc. I say that because three of his absolute best songs are here in their original form, and some of his other hits border on cheese. Plus there's other good stuff here too. "Caribbean Queen (no more love on the run)" was a huge hit, as was the ballad "Suddenly", and I think my favorite is easily "Loverboy". Plus this has the minor hit "Mystery Lady", and a decent cover of "The Long And Winding Road". That's over half the album, and the remaining four songs I'd call good filler. Any fan of 80's pop/soul should consider this a must own.
Great R&B!.......2005-02-24
Here is the beginning of Billy Ocean's consecutive hit-making. Four hits from this album include the title track,LOVERBOY,CARIBBEAN QUEEN(NO MORE LOVE ON THE RUN) and MYSTERY LADY. Another memorable song is a cover of the Beatles' recording THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD. Before Ocean,Peter Frampton covered the hit for the 1978 movie soundtrack SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. The other songs are great.
Princess Suzie's favorites.......2003-07-14
I really really love the cd so so much! I like every songs on every track. I have three that's definitly my favorite in the whole wide world! The first one "Caribbean Queen" has every sensual side to it but I don't know that much about that song that is the only thing I know. The second song "Dancefloor" makes wanna get out on the dancefloor to groove all night long, it has a lot of energy and it really picks you up out of your seat-it keeps you movin' all night long. The third song, last but not least, "Suddenly" it has a magical ring to it when you listen to Billy when he sings and listening to the instruments it's like when you see an orchestra playing it sounds beautiful
that song is very very beautiful. There is an experience to that song is that you start to believe in a impossible dream of a magical moment to reveal the real you of who you are and who you can be is to believe in your dreams and yourself that you really do live with a real fairy tale life-I went through that in the year 1983 when I was 5 years old when I saw the movie "Cinderella" the very first time that made me think I wanna be like her a princess, now, I'm 25 years old! Now I know that dreams suddenly do come true all the time it's like when you look at miracle some kind of gift of who you wanna be-that song really means a lot to me but also everbody too as long as our dreams succeeds forever. I recommend this cd to everyone out there who are a big Billy Ocean fan like me.
An 80's classic.......2001-01-10
Billy Ocean fused R&B/soul with pop/rock and ended up with an excellent album. "Carribean Queen" and "Loverboy" are both must-have 80's hits, and this album is the best place to hear them, because the versions here are much longer than the radio edits on his greatest hits CD! But then again, every song on this album is great, and the heartfelt cover of the Beatles' "Long and Winding Road" should win over people who don't normally appreciate 80's music. But if you are a fan of the 80's, you definitely need this album, and if you aren't, get it anyway!

I bought this CD after having seen Fertile Ground perform live in April. All I can say is Wow! Their music is spiritual, yet fun and lively -- they had people dancing in the crowded aisles of the theater. This is real music folks.
Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.
"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.
This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Highlights from stately classic version of Messiah.......2005-12-11
This recording by Sir Adrian Boult and the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus dates from the early 1960s, and seems now very much an old-school rendering of Handel's beloved masterpiece. As such it still has its pleasures, among them the skilled singing of the chorus and two major stars, Joan Sutherland and Grace Bumbry, in their youthful primes. Though there are no "added accompaniments" of the kind that used to be routine and unwelcome additions to Handel's original, lean orchestration, modern connoisseurs of Baroque music may find the choruses, particularly the famous "Hallelujah," and final "Amen," altogether too leaden in pacing and glutinous in texture. In general the performance practice is restrained, with barely an ornamented da capo to be found, and even essential vocal appoggiaturas omitted. The selection of numbers on this highlights disc is not particularly satisfying; an apparent desire to give all soloists and chorus more or less equal time results in some jarring skips in continuity and unfathomable omissions, as well as equally strange inclusions. I would have opted for hearing the chorus "Lift up your heads, O ye gates" over a complete, nine-minute "Trumpet Shall Sound," for example, since there is not one ornament in the da capo and bass David Ward is taxed by the high tessitura. Nevertheless, the overall authority of Boult's interpretation makes this venerable Messiah still worth a listen, especially at this bargain price.
Good performances, mediocre sound quality.......2004-11-29
The remastering of this CD was not top notch. The sound quality is far inferior to my DDD from Hyperion starring Lynn Dawson,Katherine James et al.
But I'm still looking for the perfect Messiah recording.
A signature Christmas album (at least for me).......2002-12-24
I remember this playing in the background in the house back when I was a kid. It defined Christmas for me. I've heard several versions of "The Messiah" but this one, from the London Symphony Orchestra, is the most full and robust. There seems to be no rival, in my opinion. I highly recommend this for new families. Whether you're religious or not and celebrate Christmas/the year-end holidays as a religious event or a simple but important time for a family get-together, either the lyrics and/or the sound of the music will stay with you for many Christmases to come. The stand out song is Hallelujah. Though, I'm not a complete aficionado of classical music (especially of the religious kind), this must be one of Sir Adrian Boult's finest. But I'm speaking from the LP and tape versions. I can only imagine the sound from the CD version. I highly recommend this recording.
UPDATE: Yup, this is the tape I remember. Down to the quality. I dunno about anybody else, but that's part of the charm for me. It reminds me of the tape and that reminds me of Christmases past. I love it.
