Customer Reviews:
Teena Marie's strongest-selling CD of all time........2007-05-19
This CD gave Teena Marie her all-time biggest hit with the classic "Lovergirl". While issued as a single, the power ballad "Out On A Limb" (strangely) made no headway on the Pop charts--it nonetheless remains one of Teena's most powerful and emotive ballads. Other noteworthy tracks include the gorgeous "My Dear Mr. Gaye" and "We've Got To Stop Meeting Like This". "Starchild" was Teena Marie's most commercially successful album ever.
Lady T's Star Never Shined Brighter .......2006-05-11
Teena Marie's first Epic album, "Starchild" proved to be a blessed affair. Producing, writing and arranging her own stuff only proved to be fruitful. Every song is bitching. My fave is "Out On A Limb". She showcased her own talent as a writer and arranger. The rest of the disc is fascinating. Get this!
Starchild.......2005-10-29
I am a life long fan of this dynamic woman's music, having initially heard her sing "Fire & Desire" with Rick James in early 1980 and then building my collection of her solo efforts. I have everything in vinyl, cassette and now CD.
I really enjoyed reading the first 3 reviews which went in depth regarding the content of the album so I won't repeat. I remember being soooo very happy for Teena that she had the huge crossover with "Lovergirl" because that meant that another segment of the musical world was finally recognizing her talent.
Although I love the entire disc, the tracks that I find myself repeating are: Out On a Limb (truly beautiful ballad, her vocals soar like an eagle reaching for the heavens); Help Youngblood Get To the Freaky Party & My Dear Mr. Gaye (love the end when she scats and lets forth the Marvinesque sounds).
Brilliant.......2005-10-29
Each of Teena's albums somehow sets the listener up for what will come next...The exception to that rule would be that this album's predecessor "Robbery" left only a slight clue ("Fix It" is truly the biggest hint) that Teena would take the direction she took with this project...but it does set us up perfectly for the follow-up ("Emerald City").
Influenced largely by Prince and the synthesized sounds of the 80s, "Starchild" certainly carries the vibration of the the most contagious music of the 80s. Strangely, only two songs from this album managed to chart, but it remains Teena's best selling album.
"Lovergirl" opens the album with a burst of energy, jangling with the funk guitars that she, Rick James & Prince are infamous for. Teena is clearly wearing more of Prince's influence than Rick's on this project...but she takes what she absorbed from Prince and made it her own (as she does with ALL of her influences).
"Out on A Limb" is probably the second most popular tune on this set...One of Teena's most blistering ballads. This (to me) in the era of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" and the other big ballads of the 80s, should have been a huge hit, but it only made an impression on the R&B chart and didn't cross over at all. Teena's lyricism shines through on this one and she proves that she is one of the greatest poets of love in our generation.
"Jammin'" is another staple in the string of fine funk tracks that Teena has produced throughout her career (though I must say I prefer the 12" version over the version on the album).
Most touching is the tribute to the late Marvin Gaye, "My Dear Mr. Gaye", which is lyrically and musically the richesst moment on the album. As one prior reviewer noted, this is the only album of Teena's career that did not display her jazz or Latin influences. The closest she comes to that is on this track.
The only disappointing moment on this project is "We've Got to Stop Meeting Like This", which was originally intended to be recorded with Rick James, but due to Teena's contractual battle with Motown, that legally could not happen. While Ronnie McNeir certainly provides a wonderful vocal, their chemistry comes no where near what she & Rick conjured every time they worked together.
As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, this album is clearly an indication of the album that would follow it ("Emerald City"). "Jammin'", the title track and "Out on A Limb" are certainly lyrical signs of what is to come...
The poem in the liner notes is STELLAR. So...when you purchase the album, don't just put the CD in. Pull the liner notes out and read what is behind the creation of this album.
It would be nice if Sony would remaster and repackage this album for us. The sound is really low on the CD issue...but in the meantime, just turn the volume up and lose yourself in the groove.
Lady T Having A Hard Time Messing Up.......2005-10-12
During the first several years of the 80's Teena Marie seldom made a musical misstep. Her four albums the preceeded this were brilliant but all failed to cross over to a pop audience-'Starchild' did.One big reason might have been the dancable opener "Lovergirl",her biggest hit and the song most people associate with her.Musically this album in very much a follow up to 'Robbery' minus the loose concept and plus a more concerted effort to write songs that are tuneful and pop oriented.
One thing that seperates 'Starchild' from the rest of Teena Maries catalog up until this point is the complete lack of jazz and latin musical references. All the music on on this recording is either soul ballads, funk or dance-pop.As in the case of the 'beat crazy' "Help Youngblood Get To The Freaky Party" and the brilliant "Jammin" rap and hip-hop are the musical base."Alibi' has a similar structure to the big hit-something that often happens on pop albums.
It is on the two ballads that I believe the album almost becomes too predictable. Both have a nearly identicle structure and while "We've Got To Stop (Meeting Like This)" make some excellent lyrical points about long distance relationships the music doesn't really achieve transcendance.
The title cut is a superb slice of mid 80's funk and by far the most grooving 'song' on the album."My Dear Mr.Gaye" is a very interesting tribute. At first her cosmic lyric is matched (again)
to a dull sounding ballad. Then midway through the song structure changes to mimic Marvin Gaye's own 'What's Going On' era sound and the tribute becomes more obvious. The final cut is a brief gospel piano reference.
While 'Starchild' emphasizes smooth R&B and doesn't have any of the more exotic musical features Teena Marie was previously accociated with the album does find the artist in a place showing her ability to remain true to her art while being accesible to a broader pop audience. And since this is also her biggest selling release she certainly succeeded.Even though a longtime fan of her early music might find this polished recording something of a shock,to everyone else this is probably this album most fully explores her grasp of pop,R&B,funk and soul and is a great first place to get an introduction to Teena Marie's music.

Album Description
13 well-produced R&B and Pop songs that will take you way back to the early nineties and late eighties. Timely arranged, produced and performed. Even though untipical, he is often compared to the likes of Michael JAckson, Justin Timberlake and Craig David. But he is simply KOOLL.
