An unlikely but very successful comeback album........2004-09-19
Betty Wright enjoyed a career revival thanks to such hits as "No Pain, No Gain" and "After The Pain". With this album, Betty proved that you could still create and record REAL soul music and find success with it. The only songs I did not like were "Ms. Time" and "Miami Groove" --the rest of the album, however, is nothing short of superb.
The Wright Comeback CD.......2002-06-27
With the ever changing shifts in music, Betty Wright experienced a huge lull in her career in the early to mid 80s. However, in 1988, she again took center stage, taking the industry by storm. Wright exceeded in teaching all the R&B diva wanna-beez (i.e., Paula Abdul, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson) how real Soul music was suppose to sound with "Mother Wit".
From beginning to end, this CD is fantastic. Arguably the best effort of her entire career (with 1989's "4U2NJOY" coming in a close second), Betty has simply never sounded better. The lyrics are clever, witty and wise and are delivered with sheer exuberance. With huge singles like "After the Pain" and "No Pain, No Gain", it was such a joy to hear Betty all over the radio once again. She proved you can't keep a good woman down.
If you only buy one Betty Wright CD, this should be the one! A pure listening delight.
Mother Wit.......2000-09-06
I bought this CD for one particular song: After the Pain. I could relate to this song so much that I could listen to it all day, every day. But there were a few others that I also enjoyed: No Pain (No Gain) is another alltime favorite of mine. I also liked Love Days, Unsolicited Advice, and Say it Again. I didn't care for the others so much; however, it is a great CD for Betty fanatics!
Love It!!.......2000-08-08
I love Betty Wright. As a child I listen to the songs of her, gladys, patti, and all of the great ones. As an adult I appreciate the words..... NO Pain No Gain.... "In order to get something, you gotta give something In order to be something you gotta go through something" What more can you say after that.....
No Pain NO Gain.......2000-04-17
I like the song maybe because the song has hit home i have lived some of the same things that she is sang about

A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21
Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.
Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)
Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.
To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

Contemplative, "Look Inside Yourself" Sounds.......2005-12-29
My first thought upon receiving this CD as a gift was, "What in the world is a Didgeridoo?" After putting the CD in, I instantly recognized the sound of this distinctive Australian instrument (from movies), though I had never heard any "didgeridoo cds" before.
I also wasn't sure, upon first hearing it, whether or not I liked it. It is so different than anything I have heard before and I wouldn't necessarily classify it as "music" and since that's what I was expecting, it kind of threw me for a loop. It's more of a background sound energy; various sounds combined to create a certain feeling. There are no drums, no tempo. It's continuous, relaxing and calming sounds.
Unlike many other meditation CDs, often the sounds of nature are at an equal volume to that of the didgeridoo, instead of taking a backseat.
There are 9 tracks on this CD, for a total of about 75 minutes of sound.
Track #1 "The Awakening" length 3:00
The start of this track is a toning, which is very relaxing. Then the Didgeridoo combined with sounds of a babbling brook takes over. The sound of the water is most prominent and a little too strong for my taste. There are light tones that also accompany the other sounds.
Track #2 "The Call of the Whales" length 9:40
The didgeridoo, whale sounds, and sounds of heavy rain splashing at sea. I get the feel of being a mermaid, splashing about and communicating with the whales and enjoying the hard faling rain.
Track #3 "The Cleansing" length 5:56
A very fitting title for this track, which combines the sound of a thunder and rain storm with a washboard sound and the didgeridoo. When listening to this track, I can almost smell the rain and the freshness in the air that occurs after a heavy storm.
Track #4 "Visit & Create" length 12:30
Bells start this track off, a gong, then the didgeridoo combined with sounds of a running stream, and the occasional "ting" of a bell. Besides the bell, it is similar to track one, but in this track the didgeridoo is slightly more prominent than the sounds of the water. I like the mix level of this one better than track 1. The bell is mainly used in the beginning of the track.
Track #5 "Celestial Expressions" length 11:58
This track definitely has a feel of outer space as the music begins. I get the feeling of being on a space odyssey, and of floating. This one has more instrumental than the other tracks with some angelic sounds, probably created on a keyboard. About half way through the track, the sounds darken and deepen and I could really get lost in the sounds. I really enjoyed this part of the track. This is one of my favorites because of the combined use of other instruments.
Track #6 "Rainforest of Healing" length 8:39
Sounds of rain and the didgeridoo start this one off. There are calls of birds intermingled with the other sounds.
Track #7 "The Journey" length 4:05
This track actually has classical music mixed with the didgeridoo. It is very soothing and I enjoyed this one a lot.
Track #8 "Hemispheric Alchemy" length 9:34
Didgeridoo solo. If you wear headphones when listening to this track, you will notice how the balance is shifted from left to right and back again throughout the piece for a very interesting effect.
Track #9 "Stillness in Motion" length 9:31
Very relaxing, contemplative music starts this one off, then the didgeridoo joins in.
I met the artist, Dirk Barkemeijer de Wit and thought he was a truely spiritual person. He had a very calm, relaxed demeanor and that comes through in his music.
If you're looking for traditional "music" then this isn't for you. If you're looking for some relaxing sounds to join you in your meditation or yoga, this may be just the thing for you to try!
To hear a sample byte of one of the artist's songs, you can search the web and find one.
