4 out of 5 stars Where's BDP?.......2007-08-02

This is a decent collection for a party or get together especially if you were around during the early days of hip-hop. But no Boogie Down Productions ex: Love's Gonna Get Cha', or the anti-violence anthem Self-Destruction. Glad to see Ice-T and Eric B. & Rakim on this collection.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Starter Set for the Hip Hop Novice--.......2006-10-12

If someone is interested in a convenient 2-disc "mixtape" to keep a party going, they can't go wrong with this collection. It is essentially a condensed version of the four-disc "HIP HOP BOX" that Hip-O/Universal released some time ago, which was a chronicling of key hip-hop hits from the humble beginnings of Rapper's Delight (1979) to the vast mainstream success of the early 2000's. Of particular interest are those which fall within Universal's vast back catalog, including such merged and/or defunct labels as MCA, Def Jam, Uptown, Island, Polydor, and more.

Casual or new hip-hop fans will find this compilation satisfactory-- dedicated listeners who are fans of specific artists are best advised to seek out their greatest hits/best of sets (if available).

1 out of 5 stars ?.......2006-05-23

What is this compilation have to do with anything? These are a bunch of essential songs with a few remixes that are already on other CD's! GOLD? Where in the hell is the platinum collection at? I was hoping to fine more rare remixes from the artists listed on this CD, instead of nothing. HIP-O records should be more focused than the efforts of this project. What about the other Eric B & Rakim expanded projects (UNCUT, please, unlike the GOLD album they did for them...) Uptown Records Compilation re-release, Marley Marl's first jams on MCA... who's with me on this? Even better, how about helping with BEP to stop selling out and making quality Hip Hop music again. I suggest some real crate-diggers for the HIP-O staff in the future because this CD is a redicule of hip hop music, and they're not doing jackbone for r&b either! I got one name for that: SWITCH's full-length albums on CD! Hip-O and MCA/Geffen/Universal, if you're not going to at least make up you minds what name to use to lead the company, stop keeping the people waiting for quality products. I will not buy this so-called Hip Hop GOLD CD because it's junk!

Rhian Benson is a new African/British artist with a distinctive mix of R&B/soul, jazz and reggae.

"One of today's brightest new prospectsmold-breaking music straight from the soul' says USA Today; Oprah Magazine calls her 'simply celestial' and Vibe Magazine describes her music as 'a unique blend'.

Singer, songwriter, musician and producer, Rhian Benson has a fascinating story to tell. Born in Ghana, West Africa, she grew up surrounded by music. Rhian took up the piano while a child and has been writing songs and poetry her whole life. Now a resident of Los Angeles, she also lived in India and England while growing up and studied at the London School of Economics and Harvard University.

Gold Coast, her debut album is already receiving critical acclaim from publications as varied as the Los Angeles Times, Performing Songwriter, Honey and Billboard. All songs on Gold Coast were written by Rhian and composed by her on guitar and keyboards. In addition, Rhian co-produced the album along with Grammy Award-winning producers James Poyser (Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Jill Scott) and Bob Power (D'Angelo, Tribe Called Quest, Me' Shell Ndegocello).

Nice original works. Rich soulfull voice and great music arrangement go a long way to make this an outstanding piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars SEDUCING!!.......2007-04-27

I first heard the single "How Does It Feel" on the radio and I had an instant attraction to this groove. I soley purchased this album on that single. Upon listening to the full CD I have fell in love with Rhiann. Her music is soothing, the grooves have definite passion and they compliment her soulful words. I am extremely happy with this buy and I urge anyone who loves soulful, jazzy music with a carribean flair purchase this CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is a really good CD.......2006-08-06

I really didn't know what to expect when I purchased this CD, but needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a REALLY good CD. Ms. Benson is right up there with jill scott, angie stone, bridgette mcwilliams and others. if you like neosoul, sade, vivian green, goapele and others, you'll definitely like this CD. I played it for several friends and EVERYONE asked "who is that?" "it's nice!" This is a very listenable CD, great to play when entertaining folks, or when you just want to sit back relax and enjoy a mojito or two! (smile) Definitely a "go and buy" recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent chilled out album.......2006-08-01

Great album. I bought it for one particular track and found I liked them all!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Golden Coast.......2006-07-03

I read some reviews before listened to the CD,so I didn't have a high expectation, but Rhian gave me a HUGE SURPRISE...I know her voice is different,it's not a shortcoming but an unique feature...When I am tired of a lot of screechy singers, Rhian's voice gives me a deep and great impression...If I must have a selection of favorite one track ,maybe I choose Stealing My Peace of Mind, but in fact I love all of them...

5 out of 5 stars Too marvelous for words.......2004-04-15

This A.M. session with Mulligan and Desmond is just too good for words. Each of them plays perfectly, whether soloing, or playing in unison, written or improvised. It's simply two of jazz's greatest saxophone players having a ball playing with each other. We are truly fortunate to have the results of the session to savour over and over. Every tune is a winner, but my personal favorite is "Body and Soul", that although played at a deathly slow tempo, is not for a second boring or trite. Desmond plays quite differently than he did with Brubeck here. The wispy lyricism is replaced with some really gutsy, bluesy playing.

This album is a gem and remains one of my favorites after some 40 years. The playing never gets stale or ages. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. If you are a true jazz fan, you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Capital Funkitude.......2006-10-03

I can't even begin to review this. It proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that today's hiphop/rap is garbage. Eric B & Rakim is where it's at.

This could become my favorite album of all time with one more listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation of Eric B. and Rakim.......2005-08-21

"Gold" is the best compilation of Eric B. and Rakim hits right now. Other compilations usually omit a song or two, but this album has all the hits on here. Like the other reviewer said, it has the remixes which is a definate plus. Another song I'm happy that is on here is "What's On Your Mind" which was on the House Party 2 soundtrack. It's a great song and I'm glad it's on here. Pick this one up, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars "Eric B is on the cut, no mistakes allowed"!!.......2005-08-17

This here is the "ILLEST" Eric B & Rakim compilation to date. All of there classic hits have been re-mastered for superior sound quality, plus the remixes (not detailed on the trk. listing) make this a must have for all Eric B & Rakim and true Hip-Hop fans alike. I'll detail the the remixed tracks for you; trk.4- "PAID IN FULL" (7 min. of madness-the coldcut remix) 10/10. This is the version used for there classic video and previousley released on "The Platinum Edition". Trk.5- "MY MELODY" (clean orig. version) 10/10. Trk.9- "PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER" (fon force mix) 10/10. This re-mix is off the hook!! Trk.10- "THE R" (remix edit.) 10/10. Off the hook as well! Norman Foote's sixth album for young listeners once again demonstrates his clever ability to be very cool and warm at the same time. The first track, "Loose Tooth," with its humorous twist-ending is followed by the catchy and aptly named "Snuggle Up." It's obvious Foote likes kids and is empathetic toward them. In "Think of Something Good" the listener is encouraged to look on the bright side of life when things seem a little dark and cloudy. Norman sings: "So try to think of something good, something you like to do / There's no point feeling miserable / it doesn't look good on you." The song "Deeper Than the Deep Blue" has a tender simplicity children should find fun to sing along to while giving them that happy, secure feeling that music for the very young should impart. With an easygoing feel and production approach throughout, the styles range from lounge music and bossa nova to zydeco and beyond. Whatever the style, 1000 Pennies is always grounded by Foote's soothing voice and pleasantly understated delivery. --Martha Johnson

Album Description

Canadian entertainer Norman Foote's songwriting talents come to the fore on his new CD, One Thousand Pennies. An outstanding collection of 13 new songs, each featuring exquisite arrangements. Once again Norman puts his theatrical and comedic talents to use as he weaves stories and paints musical imagery with character voices that young listeners can respond to immediately. The songs are playful, with clever lyrics and melodies combining a variety of musical styles.

A Song Sampling from One Thousand Pennies:

The title song, "One Thousand Pennies" with its Celtic beat takes us to a child's thoughts of what he thinks he can buy with One Thousand Pennies. Maybe to him they are magic pennies and seem to be worth much more than money itself. Loose Tooth is a conversation between a father and his child. All fathers would love to pull out their child's loose tooth if their child would only let them. This song has a comedic twist to it's ending with the child saying to his father "If you really want to pull out someone's tooth pull one out of your own". Graduation Day has another cool Latin American beat and paints a picture of a child on his graduation day. It also has a comedic surprise ending when we learn he has only graduated from kindergarten. Norman's sensibility on this song shows how he can relate to young listeners ."I'm ready for grade one, I can tie my shoes. I don't need velcro". Snuggle Up is a sweet sing-along type of tune that reminds us all of how wonderful a snuggle can be! Lost Umbrellas and Odd Socks takes us on a fanciful and imaginative journey to the land of lost umbrellas.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An album worth passing on to friends.......2002-01-05

If you and your children enjoy listening to stories you'll probably love this album. Each song is like a little story. As you listen to them they leave you anxiously anticipating what the next verse of the song will be. You can usually bet it will be something silly or mischievous.

Norman Foote's music has the ability to turn everyday events, places and things into something special. The songs provide a different way of looking at the world that kids and parents can relate to. The messages in the songs are the types of things I want my kids thinking about.

The music is loads of fun to listen to, my kids and I never seem to get tired of listened to it. Parents will have a tough time holding back a smile. The quality of the music is excellent, with great instrumental work. The little extras, such as the sounds of the wind blowing or pennies dropping into a piggy bank can be found throughout the album. They are well done and add to the music. The artist's enthusiasm and love for life seems to come through the music. His enthusiasm for life is contagious. Lot's of toe-tapping fun! Good Stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Our new favorite CD!.......2001-12-28

My mother-in-law gave this CD to my son for his birthday. He requests it everytime we go in the car. It's the most sophisticated kids music we've ever heard...and it doesn't drive me crazy. I highly recommend it. Thank you Norman for such great music!!

1 out of 5 stars Worst Crap Ever Thought Up!.......2007-05-16

This show and anything related to it - and the ones that follwed in the footsteps of it, are the reason kids today have no morals or respect for authority.
who ever came up with and everyone who had anything to do with getting it put on the air and published, ought to feel ashamed of themselves for their negative contribution to the social degregation of our children, who are now almost grown and ready to live what they learned1

5 out of 5 stars heh heh heh huh huh huh........this friggin RULES!.......2006-02-19

Beavis and Butt-Head changed my life. They taught me that it is o.k. to be completely stupid. I found this at the store for 5 friggin dollars and it is totally worth more than that. The songs are awesome, but the B&B segments are painfully funny. If you come across this, BUY IT!!! STUPIDITY RULES!!!!

5 out of 5 stars BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD CAN STILL PISS OFF MOM!.......2005-10-03

THIS IS A ROCK MASTERPEICE! HEh heh heh heh huh huh. SERIOUS! You can't get this new anymore? What gives? A bunch of great songs are only available on this CD.
Plus its got BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD on it! Why they ever left TV is beyond me. I used to love watching videos with them on Mtv. I think pop culture lived a little in the nineties due to these guys, it's dead again. But we shall remember it HERE with this rockpacked collection of ROCK!
NIRVANA hate myself and want to die, very awesome.
ANTHRAX doing Beastie Boys Looking down the barrel of a gun (rips)
CHER and BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD sing I GOT YOU BABE
AEROSMITH does DEUCES ARE WILD, a very cool outake from their PUMP album. Now don't forget MEGADETH, CHILI PEPPERS, WHITE ZOMBIE (before he was just Rob Zombie) and stuff you may not recognize like JACKYL and if you are younger than 17 you may never heard of RUN DMC.
I bought this thing when I was 10 years old and pissed my mom off immensly, you can find this used. DO THE SAME!

5 out of 5 stars Beavis and Butt-head Experience.......2004-12-21

2. Anthrax- Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun 4/5
3. Beavis and Butt-head- Come to Butt-head 5/5 (FUNNY!)

Album Description

September 19th sees the release of the second single by the critically acclaimed, platinum selling, Grammy award winning rapper Kanye West! 'Gold Digger' is a cautionary tale for those who confuse love with the love of somebody's wallet. The single features 'Ray Charles' style guest vocals by award winning actor/singer Jamie Foxx. The result is an explosive mix of old blues and modern day hip hop, coupled with Kanye's trademark production.

4 out of 5 stars Good Songs.......2006-03-05

All 3 songs on this single disc import are great

1.Album Version of Gold Digger, Jamie Foxx does a great job with the chorus, adds a bluesy feeling to it
2.Diamonds from Sierra Leone Remix feat. Jay-Z
3.We can make it better Feat.Talib Kweli- Has a slower beat to it
Disk includes a free real tone

Kanye seems to have a big ego but he can live up to the hype, he seems to be one of the most talented rappers out there now

Overall, a good CD Single, Recomended

4 out of 5 stars Gold Digger.......2005-11-24

To me, Gold Digger is a pretty, well, unexpected type of song. Like, you would never expect anyone to come out and write a song about this. Kind of like the "My Humps" song. You start to wonder how artists even came up with these types of song, but it doesn't matter, because the background music is enough to make you want to hear it over and over again and you find yourself humming it while shopping or buying it as a ringtone.

This song is a great dance song. For those nights where you're just hanging out with friends and not really listening to the lyrics of the song, then this is your perfect jam-out tune. But if you actually sit down and listen to the words, you will like the song even more. From Jamie Foxx's crazy back-up voice singing something along the lines of, "She take my money, when I'm in need!" to Kanye West's perfect example of a high maintenance "Gold Digger," this song will definitely make you laugh, and kind of end with a "Huh?"

When you listen to it, you will definitely see why it is such a hit and still being played over and over again on the radio today.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not cute enough to be a gold digger..........2005-11-16

...but if I could I would.

Now for all of you saying that it's not a smart move for Jamie Foxx to sing like Ray Charles on this single maybe it is, maybe it isn't but you should know that the reason that he did it is because Kanye West said that when he originally wrote the song he wanted to ask the ORIGINAL Ray Charles to sing the part that Jamie Foxx sang, but you all know what happened next. Ray died.
I think it was a good idea for Kanye to ask Jamie Foxx to sing the song and in light of all his recent success in the movie Ray to sing it like him. The song is fun and somewhat true.

4 out of 5 stars Someone Please Do Me A Favor. . ........2005-11-11

. . . and tell Jamie Foxx that he is NOT Ray Charles. Maybe if "Gold Digger" was on the "Ray" soundtrack that came out in 2004, then it would be acceptable. But it's 2005 and if it's gotten to the point that you think you're Ray Charles, then that's a problem. 'Ray' was a good movie and Jamie Foxx won an Oscar for it, but it's time to keep it real and move on. Anyway, "Gold Digger" is the only decent track on "Late Registration." Let this song be a warning to all of you guys out there.

4 out of 5 stars Gold Digger just got a whole lot BIGGER!.......2005-11-09

I thought I would be offended by this song but I actually really liked it! I loved the cheeky off the wall video with the magazine backgrounds and the pretty girls strutting their stuff along with two good looking dudes who want to show the world that they know what they are talking about.

I loved the lyrics as well, totally tongue in cheek and Kanye West sure knows how to belt out a rap come song and Jaime FOXX gave it his all along with the many pretty dancers who sure knew how to flaunt their stuff!

This is a naughty and sometimes rude song but you can't say it is not fun, because it is, and it gets a solid four out of five from me based on this alone.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae Gold like no other.........Classic !.......2000-04-17

This cd is a classic reggae cd and poeple who don't know about this series might want to start here. Every year they drop a new one..95, 96,97,etc..and they alwyas have the best cuts out in reggae. This one is no differnt becasue every jam here is tight and I never have to skip this when I play it. Tracks like beenie man and lady saw is tight. These 2 work good together and make this mid-tempo jam a classic. Tanya Stephens lets u know what u can handle on "Yuh Nuh Ready for Dis Yet". Her cd is another good one and I think she has one of the best new voices in reggae right now.(Check her out on Lil kims new one that's about to drop) Beenie rules the rest of this cd with the cut "Romie" and "Girl dem suga". It's worth it for that alone. The other half of this cd is concious /laid back tunes thats just as tight. the best one is "If Jah" with beres Hammond. Talking about why should he be afraid if Jah(God) is on his side. "Put Down the weapon of destruction" is another tight conciuos one with capelton. I could go on about this cd, but the only way for you to know for yourself it to get it. Take my word for it when I say it's worth every cent.

Get it!

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2000-02-28

The first three tracks are will really get your attention. The slower, more roots/dub/dancehall feel of "If Jah", then the rest takes u on a reggae journey u might not want to leave.

5 out of 5 stars reggae gold 1997.......2000-02-07

This cd gets knuff props from my whole family. I recommend this to any reggae fan all over the world.

1 out of 5 stars Only one reviewer here who actually heard this CD except for "moi".......2007-04-20

Only one reviewer here who actually heard this CD except for "moi" and I heartily concur with his assessment. It's not that the music itself does not rate a 5 star, but that this is just another of the many offerings out there that take music from hither and yon, repackage it and voila, instant sales. If you have a Brubeck collection you probably have all this music elsewhere. And for all you reviewers raving about the Brubeck/Desmond triumph known as "Take Five" this ain't it baby. That album is entitled "Time Out" and it's time for you to take a breath. Thank you Mr. Dlouhy, for reviewing the actual product.

1 out of 5 stars Take Five?.......2007-01-14

This CD is a mixed bag. One tune, called "Eleven Four" is actually "Three to Get Ready", a totally different tune. The liner notes reek, there is no listing of what concerts these selections are from, no bio info to speak of. The audio quality is mediocre. This issue might be historically interesting if one knew where and when the tracks were recorded.
With great Brubeck out there, like the Carnegie Hall concert, there is absolutely no reason to waste money on this tepid rendering.

5 out of 5 stars Take Five.......2001-12-08

I was attending Purdue University from 1961-63 and I was walking throught the Student Union Building and I heard the Sax of Paul Desmond playing Take Five. I walked through the doors into the main lobby which were open and low and behold there large as life and live were the Dave Brubeck Quartet and I just stopped and listened to these muscians.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Desmond Not On It.......2000-06-19

Despite the listing, Paul Desmond is not on the Immortal Concerts CD. The cuts are from Montreux Switzerland, July 22 82, with Dave, Bill Smith, CHris Brubeck and Randy Jones.

5 out of 5 stars Best jazz album ever.......2000-01-20

I first heard this in the late fifties. No one has ever been able to top the drums in Take Five or the sax of Desmond. Every song from Pick Up Sticks to Kathy's Waltz are innovative and lyrical. Brucbeck's piano is so versatile Whenever I want to introduce teens to good music I give them this- in fact, my son who works for Microsoft listens to this in his cube- and if its not playing his coworkers come in and ask him to put it on.
