5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD!!!!.......2007-04-10

This CD is NOT a remix..like so many of them are these days...this is the REAL DEAL...all the songs are GREAT!!! I just love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great set of tunes!!.......2005-05-16

Celebration: The Best of Kool & the Gang is the best songs from a great band.

In fact, I NEVER met anyone who did not love Kool & the Gang.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best of their "best of"s.......2005-02-04

It's a great compilation of Kool & the Gangs hits. Although a few hits are missing here: Rocksteady, Summer Madness, Emergency, Be My Lady, Good Time Tonight,... But it is really too hard to collect all their hits in just one CD, 'cause they have soooo many good songs.

3 out of 5 stars The Penultimate Collection.......2004-07-04

I actually give this 3-CD collection 3.5 stars. CD 1 will teleport to the great times of the 70's and 80's. CD 2 incorporates more synthesizers and has more of a rock 'n roll feel. If they had left songs like "Straight Ahead", "Peacemaker", "Rags To Riches" and "Strong" off of the second CD and added the three missing classics, "Summer Madness", "Hollywood Swinging" and "Open Sesame", I would have given this CD collection 5 stars. CD 3 provides hipper (remix) versions of a couple classic tunes. Thus, this not the ultimate collection but the penultimate collection. Still, it's a nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the combo.......2004-01-27

The CD is a good complilation of the later works of Kool & The Gang. It compliments the Best of Kool & the Gang 1969-76 CD, so I suggest buying the both of them if you want a comlete collection of CDs that cover Kool & the Gang's career with out overlapping and duplicating tracks. Added bonus: the version of "Cherish" on this CD is the extended track.

The acid-jazzers of the '90s could learn a thing or five from the pre-"Ladies Night" Kool and the Gang. They were one of the tightest funk acts around, and this best-of finds them leaping from highlight to highlight. While their lyrics are sometimes just (admittedly sage) chants like "Love the Life You Live," the Gang also earn A-plusses for brashness ("Jungle Boogie," "Spirit of the Boogie"), tongue-in-cheek self-aggrandizement ("Hollywood Swinging"), and surreal antiheroin ranting ("Rhyme Tyme People"). --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Those were the days. .......2006-01-12

Ok, growin up in the nation's capital I remember going to the "Friday night" dance at the local community center and the dj put on "Kool & The Gang" (the first single). All of us were dancing. (jr high shcool dayz). Kool & The gang was puttin out some FONKAY Stuff man. I mean, "Who's gonna take the weight", "Chocolate Buttermilk" "Let the Music take Your Mind". And the drummer George was not bull crappin on those drums man. This is my favorite era of Kool & The Gang. I did not care from them after "Ladies night". Not hating "Celebrate" or the other songs but in my opinion they sounded like that thier funk card had been revoked. Of course "Get Down On It" was a great record, but nothing like the early days. My favorite is "Love The Life You Live". I love the entire song with it's jazz horn line and plusating beat. Those were the days.

5 out of 5 stars Funky, cool, jazzy..........2005-10-10

Essential for the casual Kool and the Gang fan. This CD contains many of their relatively early hits. It makes an excellent complement to their later work as contained in the "Millenium Collection" series.

5 out of 5 stars let the music take your mind.......2005-09-24

Mention Kool and the Gang and everybody's image is of J.T. Taylor, the lean, youthful singer who fronted the band between 1979 and 1988. Taylor's hold on on the band was so complete that most people assumed he was Kool instead of the band's leader, bass player Robert "Kool" Bell. Taylor's vocals were smooth, well polished and always, always upbeat.

But before Taylor's arrival the band had another incarnation as a leading soul band, boasting a handful of Top 40 hits as well as many lesser hits bubbling under the Top 100. This band had no lead singer. They used a large variety of horns to propel their music and held it together with Bell's strutting baseline as they took turns singing as needed.

As a missing link between the proto-funk of James Brown and Sly Stone and the full-blown sound of Parliament and Funkadelic, this album is absolutely indispensible.

5 out of 5 stars Damn..........2005-02-23

Sometimes you have to go far and wide to find real funk. Sometimes it's right in front of your damn nose.
Kool and the Gang practically perfected funk music. Take the rawness of the James Brown sound and the polish of Parliament and you have K and the G distilled.

In utopia everyone would own this album.

5 out of 5 stars Kool & the Gang are exactly what it says on the Tin.......2005-02-16

Kool & the Gang are simply the band that the beatles failed to be. Some of the tracks on here are some of the greatest funk, soul and sumptous disco sounds ever to be recorded. From the uplifting anthem of Celebration to the sentimental mush of Cherish through to the oh so risque innuendo of Get Down on it, they're all here. Pick it up and listen and 'Ooh La La La - Lets Go Dancing' !!!

I love Get Down On It,Fresh,And Cherish. There is no Misled.

3 out of 5 stars not the greatest greatest hits.......2000-09-29

This compilation is just fine if you want to add "Jungle Boogie" to your collection once someone has stolen your Pulp Fiction soundtrack, but a much more complete compilation has recently been released. It's worth a few extra dollars to pick up The Very Best of Kool and the Gang.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Funk.......2000-09-13

"The Best Of Kool & The Gang-The Millennium Collection" contains all their best radio songs-with no filler. The majority of these songs were released during my high school years, and, man, were these songs HUGE!!! In this sampler of some of K&TG's greatest hits, you get one of the greatest party songs of all time, "Celebration", which will have you dancing for hours! You also get "Too Hot", "Joanna", "Cherish" and "Fresh"-all a staple of early-to-mid '80's radio playlists. "Hollywood Swinging", one of Kool's early hits, was the main reason I purchased this priceless gem of Mercury/MCA's 20th Century Masters Series. So, if you're into funk, or if you don't want to spend more on a pricier Kool & The Gang Greatest Hits Collection, this is the CD for you! Buy it before the record company(ies) decides to take this 20th Century Masters Series out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome funky stuff.......2000-07-27

This CD is un-funking believable. This Greatest Hitsencompasses not only some of the best known tracks by funkmasters Kooland The Gang, but some of the most essential songs of the seventies and eighties in general. The group leaves no level of good R&B behind. The smash "Jungle Boogie" contains awesome horn arrangements. Pop flavoring with an R&B feel makes "Celebration" one of the biggest party jams of all time. The light love songs like "Cherish" and "Joanna" are very effective and romantic. A totally new side to the funksters but that hot R&B sound continues on the rest of the tracks like "Get Down On It" and the discoy "Ladies Night". Kool and The Gang is one of the all time best funk bands around on this CD shows the diversity of the group to change to funk to pop light and modern R&B ("Fresh"). The group is very inspirational to many artists in modern urban music with a sounds that is infectious and cleaver. The CD is really "Big Fun". END

3 out of 5 stars No, too much missing to call their best.......2000-04-10

A fine album, as far as it goes. But it is missing too much oftheir better, and earlier work. No "Who's Gonna Take TheWeight", "Funky Stuff", "Let The Music Take Your Mind". Sure, the work here is fine, but to call this collection their "BEST", would be a gross understatement. Instead, go for "The Best of Kool & The Gang 1969-1976. More and better cuts.

If you like go-go music, you will like this CD. It is put together quite well and has a good mix of geniune artist. There is no fake go-go like that manure song from 1988: "Doin da Butt" by EU.

D.J. Kool did him self when he came out with this go - go cd. If you love go-go this is the cd for you. And I also think he represented go go D.C. Virginia and MAryland to the fullest. Also for the people that don;t know about go-go this is the next thing to happen for music period. Also a big shoutout to every body in Virginia D.C. and maryland keep this go-go thing alive. So it can become nationwide

This is a really good complilation. DC Go-Go is really underated and this album could put it on the map. This album represents right and gives u a taste of what DC go-go has to offer. I think DJ Kool Could have added a few more Backyard songs, and probably the most famous go-go song "Overnight Scenario" by rare essense, which was remade by Jay-z. But i hope a lot more people try out this album so go go can be put on the map.

5 out of 5 stars DC's own music.......2000-02-20

excellent CD, this is my 2nd copy the 1st is a bit worn. If youve spent any real time in DC youve heard of Go-Go , if your lucky youve seen it live, if not pick up this CD and you'll know why its so HOTT! Peace

5 out of 5 stars "The ultmate collection of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo on CD".......2005-08-28

For those that don't know, the "G" in G Rap is for "genius". With a signature lisp and all, G Rap represented the "second coming" of lyrical giants that would emerge in the mid '80's. Along side Rakim and Big Daddy Kane, G Rap (an obvious student of Kool Moe Dee) would innovate a whole new high-tech, ghetto vernacular, that remains 2nd to none! G Rap is one of the illest lyricists, story tellers and gangsta' rappers, all roled up in one! Just listen to his early classics like "IT'S A DEMO", "'CAUSE I"M FLY" and who can forget the incredible verse on "THE SYMPHONY", Where he actually out shines BDK? Arguably, one of the best lyrics on wax! Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, in their early days, put out nothing less than classic Hip-Hop! No true Hip-Hop collection will be complete with out this CD!

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to a Golden-Age Rap Pioneer.......2002-10-22

Kool G Rap-- His lisp is still crisp-- Possessing one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop, he blazed a trail for several rappers to follow, despite being relatively unknown by mainstream standards. He's kind of like Iggy Pop of the hip hop world-- he never sold a tremendous amount of records, but he maintains a cult following that won't quit, while scores of newcomers point to him as an influence.

The 2 disc collection starts off in the mid-1980's, back when the Marley Marl-led "Juice Crew" was among the early hip-hop posses to achieve prominence, being signed to Prism Records, which eventually would become Cold Chillin'. Shortly afterwards, label head Ty Williams secured a distribution deal with Warner Bros.

"I'm Fly" and "It's a Demo" are sparse early tracks which makes listeners focus even more on Kool G's lyrics. At this time, he was somewhere between LL Cool J and Rakim, spouting whimsical braggadocio with occasional inflections of sober battle-ready aggression. His technique would be fine-tuned on his first album, "Road to the Riches", featuring the title cut, "Dope Car" (sampling Gary Numan), "Poison", and "Men at Work". Marley's 808-driven funk production is at it's best here.

On his second lp, "Wanted Dead or Alive", Kool G's thematic flow started becoming more gangster-driven; by 1990, NWA had opened the floodgates for gangster rap tales, and "Riches" didn't exactly burn up the charts; maybe Kool G felt he had nothing to lose. "Streets of New York" was a brief radio hit, with a saxophone riff that was ahead of its time. Other standout cuts were "Erace Racism" and "Talk Like Sex". Most of the production on this album was handled by Large Professor, Eric B, and Kool G. himself..

"Live and Let Die" would be delayed by several months in 1992 because of the "Cop Killer" scandal. Cold Chillin' would lose their distribution deal with Warner Bros. in the aftermath. The album was relased independently. Produced mostly by Ice Cube affiliate Sir Jinx, the album was G-funk fueled, with even more relentless gangster-tales spit by Kool G, who recorded most of the album in Los Angeles, and he was in town during the riots...
"Ill Street Blues", the lead single, was actually handled by the Trackmasters, who would go on to make major pop hits for LL Cool J, Will Smith, and more. ... Kool G went on to record "4,5,6" for Epic/Sony, but his sales still stalled at the 200,000 range, despite a boost from TrackMasters on a few cuts. That would be his first and last album for Sony; the next lp, "Roots of Evil" would be released independently on his own Ill Street Records; shortly afterwards, influential indie rap label RAWKUS approached him for a new record deal, and "The Giancana Story" was rumored to be his best work yet-- reportedly, it included a duet with REM's Michael Stipe (!?).. But the label has had bizarre internal problems for the past couple of years, despite recently getting major distribution through MCA/Universal, and the album kept being delayed-- at this writing, it is said to have been shelved permanently, and Kool G. has been released from the label...
