Great Works by Ms. Howard. She is truely a Mega Star.

5 out of 5 stars under utilized voice.......2007-02-08

i am listening to this cd right now. i bought this cd because i wanted the duet with gerald levert. but this woman can blow. i am disappointed that she doesnt have as many projects as she should. what a loss to those of us who really like SINGERS and not these fly by night artist of this century. in my opinion she is of the caliper of gladys knight, aretha franklin and nancy wilson if given the opportunity she and her music will stand the test of time.
she is a mellow seductive voice that i never tire of listening to

5 out of 5 stars Relive the 80s with Mikki.......2007-01-26

If you are a fan of the 80s or R&B Soul, you will love this CD. I would put Mikki Howard in the same style of Stephanie Mills, Shirley Murdock, or Regina Belle. Mikki may not have reached mainstream status, but "Come Share My Love," "Love Under New Management," "Baby Be Mine," the duet with late Gerald Levert "That's What Love Is," "Love Under New Management," and the Aretha Franklin remake "Until You Come Back to Me" are all HITS. This CD made me relive my childhood, and I didn't even know Mikki recorded all of those songs I knew. I highly recommend buying this CD to add to your collection.

The Chicago-born vocalist Miki Howard burst on the scene in 1987 and showed a lot of promise with her hits "Come Share My Love," and "Love Under New Management." She even had the chops to play Billie Holiday in the movie Malcolm X. This radio-friendly release is Howard's first record since her 2001 CD, Three Wishes. Co-produced by smooth jazz saxophonist Kim Waters and Chris "Big Dog" Davis, Howard's Aretha Franklin/Mavis Staples-influenced vocals update ten '70s R&B Quiet Storm classics, from the Tina Turner-inspired Ann Pebbles hit "I Can't Stand the Rain" and The Captain and Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time" to Natalie Cole's "Inseparable" and Marlena Shaw's "Go Away Little Boy." All told, Howard's husky contralto still coos and grooves, as evidenced by the title track originally made by Sylvia Robinson, and Boz Scaggs's Blue-eyed soul classic, "Lowdown." Welcome back, Miki! --Eugene Holley, Jr.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed Results For Miki...Whew!.......2007-02-22

First of all, I'd like to thank Shanachie Records for giving Miki Howard a chance to record again, but they need to STOP releasing these lame overpriced 10 track CDs (an EP for that matter!) of tired remakes. And the production value/quality on these EPs are sorely LACKING. The whole 'Remake Classic Song' concept was been worn out, and most people will agree that these CDs shouldn't cost more than $9.99! (Glad I got a cheap used copy...and I re-sold it ASAP! LOL)

Now, as for Miki Howard, she was ONCE one of the most powerful & soulful vocalists during the mid 1980's (during her Atlantic/Giant era), but her once mighty pipes have since lost it's fire. Some of the songs (those that don't require much vocally!) are perfect for Miki (check out 'Which Way Is Up ?', 'Lowdown', 'Pillow Talk', and a few others), but she just doesn't (or maybe she can't) bring IT to tracks like 'Inseperable' (Natalie Cole has NOTHING to worry about!), 'Just Don't Want To Be Lonely' (The Main Ingredient is now pissed!), 'Misty Blue' (BOTH Dorothy & Monica are nodding in disbelief!).

In closing, I expected much more from Miki Howard, but she is a DIFFERENT singer than the one we all remember from almost 20 years ago. If you MUST buy this CD, please listen to the tracks FIRST, and try to find a low-priced used copy.

2 out of 5 stars SHANACHIE RECORDS LABEL PROBLEM.......2006-11-20

I'VE NOTICED THEY ONLY HAVE 10 SONGS ON MOST OF THE RELESED CDs.THIS IS ANNOYING AND STINKS FROM THIS RECORD LABEL, THEY NEED TO INCLUDE MORE TRACKS ON THEIR CDs .THIS CD IS LISTENABLE, BEST TRACKS ARE LOWDOWN AND PILLOW TALK, THERE IS A LOT OF SYNTHESIZED MUSIC IN THE BACKROUND OF OTHER TRACKS,MAKING IT SOUND LIKE KAROKE. THE SAME IS ALSO NOTED ON THE NEW GLEN JONES CD.

5 out of 5 stars HOT!!! BRILLIANT & DEEPLY SOULFUL~BRAVO MIKI !!!.......2006-11-14

Miki Howard is a rare artist and captured in this tremendous set at the peak of her amazing vocal magnificence and deeply passionate skilled way of emoting like nobody else around can...every song is taken to a new dimension and will give complete pleasure to anyone who enjoys a great voice!!! For anyone who has enjoyed these classics over the years, do not miss this stunning and beautifully arranged collection of classics...Miki is riveting and does each standard as they have never been done before and you will fall in love with each one of these classics all over again and with the incredibly talented Miki Howard who is THE voice of her generation!!! Bravo Miki and thank you for this wonderous musical treat...it is the finest and "Which Way Is Up" being the wild funky jam that it is should be released as a single and should go all the way to the top and hopefully Miki will win a much deserved "Grammy Award" this time!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just Awesome!!!!.......2006-09-26

I've always been a big fan of Miki's and I must say this release is some of her best work since she recorded Miki does Billie Holiday. I heard her sing "Inseperable" in person a few months ago, but to hear it on this release just blows me away and I can't stop listening to it!! Miki is and always have been one of the top singers in R & B and jazz; a true DIVA!! You Go, Gurl!!! and I will be seeing you at the Blue Ribbon.

4 out of 5 stars It's Really Good To Hear Miki :).......2006-09-20

I jsut purchased this CD and I am thinking that Miki is sounding really good!! Her song selection is good as well. the only thing I will say is that I am looking for new/original music from Miki Howard. Her style is soooo unique that when she covers a song, it ultimately sounds different. She makes it her own. But, I would love to here her sing orignal music like "Baby, Be Mine" or "Not Like You Do" (with Norman Brown) etc.

If you like Miki howard (like I do) and you don't mind artists covering music (doing remakes) then this is the CD for you!!!

Buy it!!

PS. She does a bang up job on " Inseparable" and "Misty Blue" ....AWESOME!!!!

2 out of 5 stars A simply good album from a less heard Diva.......2002-11-28

If many of you haven't heard of Miki Howard Love Confessions is an album to start your Miki Howard collection. This cd starts with the jazzy Baby Be Mine which was released as the first single and simply is beautiful. You've Changed is a cover of the Billie Holiday hit which was also a single and no one sings it better than Miki That's what Love Is finds Miki dueting with former husband Gerald Levert and it's amazing with Gerald who many of you remember now is singing solo and this duet shows when Miki used to sing duets her way. In too Deep is a fun dance hit and will get you moving Crazy is a jazzy ballad and it is the best ballad in the world that is left off of love collections. Bitter love is a high energy dance hit that will get you dancing and toe tapping the whole time. Reasons and I wanna be there are two love ballads that are very lovely. The title track is a fun track that is moving and soulful. Edge of love {Released as a bonus track on the cd only}is from the Whoopi Goldberg movie Fatal Beauty is a saxophone tinged ballad that should have been released as a single. So try one of Miki's albums and you will not be disapointed. I also recomend Vesta's 1988 cd Vesta 4U to hear a wonderful voice like Miki's
Enjoy,
Regis

4 out of 5 stars Miki's "Confessions" a sin to miss.......2000-09-06

With her sweet, soulful clarity and stunning good looks, it's always been a bit puzzling that Miki Howard wasn't a bigger star. Granted, she had a faithful fan following and a string of soul singles from the mid-80's to early 90's, but crossover success eluded her. But the blame is apparently to be laid on label politics and lazy publicists, as her sophomore recording, 1987's "Love Confessions," proves Howard to be one of the more talented and sophisticated singers R&B has ever seen.

The record demonstrates this on contact with the bluesy torcher of an opening track "Baby, Be Mine," a gospel-tinged treasure that shows off her voice as well as anything she's ever recorded; her ad libs in the final section are especially spine-tingling. A sleek, pop-flavored remake of the Billie Holiday staple "You've Changed" is another winner, and a duet with Gerald Levert, "That's What Love Is," ranks as one of the slickest-produced and joyously performed ballads of 80's R&B. The dancey "In Too Deep" and "Bitter Love" sound more than a little dated at this point, but the upbeat title track makes up for them with a classic dance/pop sensibility that still grooves hard today...and again Miki's soul cries and flourishes prove she's a sure-footed vocalist to be reckoned with. A slowed-down reading of Earth Wind & Fire's "Reasons" is icing on the cake, sure to win over fans of both classic and modern soul.

For those of us who cherish "Quiet Storm" artists like Roberta Flack and Anita Baker, this record still ranks as a strong outing years after its release. Lush and touching, Miki Howard's "Love Confessions" is full of soulful truths.

5 out of 5 stars You've Changed.......2000-04-11

Mikki has one of the powerful voices. This piece could not only touch lives but mend broken hearts. All of her albums are nice, but this one can be played over and over agian. It's funky and soulful!

4 out of 5 stars One of the BEST soul CDs of the 80s - WHY is this now OOP?!.......2005-08-08

I love MIKI, and have all her CDs, but I feel THIS self-titled effort is her most consistent album to date. In fact, the first FIVE tracks here, peaking with the lung-busting LOVE UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT are peerless, as Miki glides from stunning quiet storm soul ballads to uptempo funky jams, it's ALL MIKI, no filler. While the end of the CD peters out a bit, it's still one of the most satisfying soul albums in my collection - one that, unlike many other albums, I keep returning to again and again. Sadly, I don't think Miki ever topped this creative peak - her subsequent albums (FEMME FATALE, MIKI SINGS BILLIE, CAN'T COUNT ME, etc.) all have moments, but none are appealing as this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very soulful album! .......2004-09-20

I still think that Miki Howard's self titled '89 album is her best. She is that good on the funky Ain't Nuttin' In the World, which had me blasting its heavy hitting beats back in the fall of 1989! I thought that Gerald Levert produced that, since his group Levert had similar songs like that one, but it was Nettlesby and Coffey that made that fine record. Another favorite is the taking control song, Love Under New Management. Miki's finest vocal performance to date. If You Still Love Me, Just the Way..., Love Me All Over, Until You Come Back To Me and others are some other superb songs. This is still a fabulous album to this day, full of soul, grace and talent from Miki!

4 out of 5 stars Miki Does It.......2003-09-09

Miki's third release was a blockbuster for her. "Aint nothin' in the world" was her first #1 r&b hit and that was a suprise considering it was a up-tempo jam. "Love under new management" is her classic though. The power and emotion in which she sings it makes you feel like she has found the joy of her life! The spoken word rap that ends the song is the highlight.

Miki works a remake of "Until you come back to me (Thats what im gonna do)", which was another Top ten r&b hit for her. The opening "If you still love her" is another brilliant ballad along with her fourth single "Come home to me".

Miki also has a standard duet with GERALD LEVERT on the slow jam "I'll be your shoulder". This is a well rounded cd of early 90's r&b and shows Miki in peak form. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Every CD Collection.......2001-09-16

What can I say, I love this album! The sound is real, earthy; it sways and undulates...and playfully seduces you. You can hear her passion and zest for life in every song she sings. In them she longingly pursues honest, open, pure love. All of the songs on this album are timeless. It is indeed a good listen, and worthy of your collection.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good disc.......2000-02-10

songs such as Love Under new management was tight on this disc.some of the material is a bit dated but her vocals ain't no joke.she can sing.i like her remake of until you come back to me(that's what i'm gonna do).she is very underrated.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING VOCAL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO MIKI HOWARD!!!.......2004-05-25

How was this overlooked?? From the opening definitive "Good Morning Heartache", it is clear that this is an extraoridinary singer of remarkable power and range. So many have done "Good Morning Heartache" but Miki really nails it and their is no contest-listen for yourself as this is one of the great bargains now on Amazon so take advantage of it!! A masterful take on the Dinah Washington Classic "This Bitter Earth" make it clear that Miki is in the same class as the classic singer that she gives tribute to in this incredible collection of great songs with just plain great singing. A great blending of two stellar vocalists make "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" a sensous and winning duet that should have been a Quite Storm Classic!!! Why were these incredible tracks kept from the public?? This is extremely sad and very weird when something this great is ignored and only enjoyed by a few-but we are the lucky ones for sure!!!! This lady can really sing and she is one of the all-time greats and hopefully something will happen and she will get her just due..."Shining Through" sounds like a masterpiece that should have been a mega-hit in the vein of "We Are The World" as it is that grand in scope and passion. Miki towers over a magnificent arrangement and full choir with greatness that comes from few...she must have been devastated and confused that this was ignored!!! A towering soul classic that is totally engrossing is the magnificent "But I Love You" with Miki again giving one of the most brilliant performances that this long time fan of soul finds totally mindblowing while the funky jam "Ain't Nobody Like You" should have gone to #1 as it cooks unlike anything else I have ever heard!!! Just when you thought Miki hit her peak comes this mesmerizing classic that will blow away any lover of soul music and "I've Been Through It" is another classic masterpiece in an album that is so full of them that you wonder why this didn't get a least 5 Grammy's as it is so great that no words can really describe the artisty contained here!! Over the years of being a music freak with a huge collection of a diverse variety this is at the top of my list of all time great collections such as the vocal classic "Dusty In Memphis" and this set is certainly equal to that classic and this great lady is still alive!!! Really listen to this classic and give this lady her just due!!! "Release Me" sounds like another mega-hit as it pulsates and cooks with a vocal that is engrossing and an arrangement that is funky and masterful. "Thank You For Talkin' To To Me Africa" is another great funky jam that flows and has hit sound all over it!!! A classic movie theme is how "Cigarette Ashes On The Floor" sound while the closing "New Fire From An Old Flame" also has the sound of another mege-hit. No wonder the music world is in trouble when they let a MASTERPIECE like this get away!! This incredible work could be release today again and its timeless appeal would be appreciated by the masses if given a chance!!! It is certainally miles above anything current...Bravo MIKI!!!! You are totally AWESOME and please do another one!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best tributes to Billie Holliday ever made........2007-01-18

I will never understand why this CD was not an across-the board success. Miki Howard pays a loving and respectful yet innovative tribute to Billie Holliday here. What I find most appealing, however, is that Miki makes most of these songs in her own way--without imitating Billie's style--and thus adds a new dimension to the originals. Classy arrangements and lush, elegant orchestrations match the mood perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars What a Tribute!!.......2004-05-24

Miki Howard took on quite a task when she did this tribute album to Billie Holiday. And she did Billie some justice! This R&B diva brings her own wonderfully accomplished style to these songs, making each one unique. Yes, you've heard them before but not like this.

"I'm A Fool To Want You" is smokey. "My Man" is deep and delicious. "Solitude" and "Yesterdays" are worth the price of the whole CD! Miki's vocal on "Strange Fruit" knocked me out. The orchestral arrangements are full-bodied and jazzy.

If you love Miki Howard and old jazz, this one is a must for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING PASSIONATE VOCALS~BRAVO MIKI HOWARD!!!.......2004-05-26

Live or in the studio, Miki Howard is totally awesome and it is amazing that she is not at the top where she belongs!! Opening with the rhythmic and soulful "Come Share My Love", Miki then glides smoothly into the classic ballad "Imagination" and makes it completely her own. "That's What Love Is" is a great funky duet while Miki is always superb on Billie Holiday songs and "You've Changed" is a perfect example of this! A classic slow jam "Baby Be Mine" is a complete tour-de-force and the self-penned "Blues" is stormy blues at its finest!! Hypnotic soulful cooker "Ain't Nobody Like You" has a great driving rhythm with a gripping vocal as does the winning "Ain't Nuthin' In The World" which is a funky jam. Solid soul masterpiece is the awesome "Love Under New Management" while Miki takes the Stevie Wonder "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" and makes it her own in this great "Live" take!! Do Not Miss this awesome set!!! This lady can really sing them in her own original and brilliant way!!! Lets here more!!!! Bravo Miki!!!

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD MIKI HOWARD EVER RECORDED!.......2007-04-10

Miki Howard is from back in the day....when there was attention focused on vocals and not the interference of a whole lot of dancers or make-shift videos. This import from Germany "Femme Fatale" is by it's own definition in the title represents Miki Howard as a beautiful and sedutive woman with a infinite voice range that brings the listener close and intimate to Ms. Howard's heart wrenching songs. My favorites were the two standards "Good Morning Heartache" and "This Bitter Earth"; brilliantly sung, both Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington would have been proud of her interpetation of their signature songs. From the two previous torch songs mentioned above, Miki duets with the strong and commanding vocals of Christopher Williams in a R&B track called "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" a remake of Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes pleading loving song of reuniting two lovers. "Shining Through" is wonderful and makes your heart feel good as it demonstrate a spritual and memorable emotion of hope and conviction. For anyone who has been betrayed or walk on by a lover..."Cigarette Ashes On The Floor" reeks of heartbreak, low self esteem and "forever lost" as Miki Howard pines to a lover who doesn't care how they treat her. I have been looking for this CD for years, after hearing the first two songs played at someone's house. The stores did not carry it, but I never gave up. Cruising on Amazon.com... BANG! THERE IT WAS...AND AT A GOOD PRICE. I highly recommend this CD to all of you out there who love pure singing and good musical arrangements. You will be playing it until the disc cannot stand anymore!

5 out of 5 stars Her superb but inexplicably underexposed debut........2006-10-12

This was Miki Howard's debut album and was one of the most underrated and underexposed albums of its time...and it deserved a much better fate. The title track is one of the most gorgeous and soul-stirring Soul ballads of its time and her jazzy cover of the immortal "Imagination" should have garnered the album a Grammy award. Hopefully, either Rhino or Atlantic will reissue this very fine album in the future.
