Sometimes There's Nothing Better Then Luther.......2007-03-22
Lol well this album may be over twenty years old now but it is certainly a treat to slap on 'Give Me The Reason' on like an audio gourmet platter and just dig right in.Vandross kicks everything right off with "Stop The Love" which just emmediatly gets your attention with it's bouncy beat and with the brilliant gospel like female choir including the likes of Cissy Houston,Cheryl Lynn,Alfa Anderson and Paulette McWilliams it goes up a whole other level;one of THE BEST examples of secularized gospel in the decade! Now "See Me" has a slightly slower beat and just some of the creamiest sound and creamiest bass from Marcus Miller you'll ever hear!"I Gave It Up (When I Fell In Love)" is loads of fun because it has that well "retro neuvou' shuffling soul sound that Luther is so capable of plus a hook that will have you singing and clapping along. The title track and the wonderfully kinetic "I Really Didn't Mean It" were funky dancable urban contemporary of that day complete with those great electronic hand claps and that big 80's beat at it's best.As for the ballads "There's Nothing Better Than Love" features Luther and Gregory Hines really reaching for new heights from their voices and they sound wonderful together on this terrific song."Because I Really Love You" makes the best use of strings you'll hear during this time while his cover of "Anyone Who Had A Heart" features a creamy but soulful sax solo courtesy of Kirk Whalum and "So Amazing" is pretty.'Give Me The Reason' finds Luther Vandross on his fifth solo triumph in a row and already a permenant resident of the R&B world and music charts. What's sad is that this album wasn't as successful on the pop side.I have no doubt that with the right promotion this fun, peppy album with more uptempo songs then love ballads would have crossed Luther over permemently he really doesn't seem to be worrying.A must have recording for Luther Vandross fans or anyone interested in 80s soul.
Luther is and always will be the man.......2006-12-14
Luther was at the top of his game with the Give Me The Reason CD. The album featured the hit singles Stop To Love,So Amazing, There's Nothing Better Than feat. Gregory Hines and the tile track. Stop To Love" and "Give Me The Reason" were beautifully produced, arranged, and performed numbers and huge R&B hits that still get an old school party started while So Amazing & There's Nothing Better Than feat. Gregory Hines were both beautiful ballads that are timeless.
We'll miss u Luther..........2005-10-03
What can I say about one of the MOST TALENTED singers of my time?! This was the 1st album of the Late Luther Vandross I had ever owned. I was in my early teens then and the cassette tape has long been lost. I have most of his cd's and I'm glad I reintroduced this one back into my collection. My favorite, 'there's nothing better than love' is a lovely duet with the Late Gregory Hines and how I miss him too. The song is even more special to me now, since they're both living on in memory...
Another winner.......2004-10-14
Luther was definitely on a roll at the time of this album's release, and GIVE ME THE REASON was not only Luther's second consecutive album to be certified Double-Platinum in sales, but it also managed to reach #14 on the Hot 200. He was slowly beginning to gain acceptance from the pop audience, and this album helped him narrow the margin. Consistent and cohesive, with material that is expertly written, produced, and performed, GIVE ME THE REASON is everything contemporary soul record should be.
Luther has always been an underrated songwriter, and this album should have changed that. From the soaring anguish of the title song, to the understated sentiment of the lovely "So Amazing," Give Me The Reason contains some of Luther's best written songs. He also continues to strike the perfect balance between production, song, and performance, as evidenced on the sputtering "I Really Didn't Mean It." Everything also comes together flawlessly on the delightfully frantic "Stop To Love," which recalls the sound of early Motown, yet has a modern spin all it's own.
Luther also performs a duet with dancer/actor Gregory Hines that is possibly the album's brightest highlight. There is a surprising chemistry between the voices of Vandross and Hines that is at the core of the touching, melodic "There's Nothing Better Than Love," which really transforms the song into a heart-felt stunner. Luther also adds another Bacharach/David composition to his catalog with his jazzy rendition of "Anyone Who Had A Heart," which stands tall with even the best of the Vandross covers. One of his most enjoyable albums, GIVE ME THE REASON represents Luther at his prime.
A fun album.......2004-04-30
Luther was a major player in the 80s. My man could SING in a big way, and he had a nice style all to himself too. This was his fifth album, and although its not a classic like `Never Too Much' (1981) and `Forever, For Always, For Love' (1982), it is a good album of fun numbers like the title track and `Stop To Love'. There's a little something here for everybody, floor movers, love songs, a Dionne Warwick cover, a little bit of everything. Overall I wouldn't call it essential, but it sure is fun.

Customer Reviews:
His fifth solo album was almost as good as its predecessors........2006-11-18
This album was Luther's fifth solo set and the one that took him to new heights thanks to his gorgeous duet with Gregory Hines ("There's Nothing Better Than Love") and the title track--both of which brought him closer to mainstream pop success. For me, the gorgeous ballads "Because It's Really Love", "So Amazing" and his jazzy remake of Dionne Warwick's classic "Anyone Who Had A Heart" are the CD's best moments. The only track worth skipping is the terrible and overproduced club track "I gave It Up When I Fell In Love".
Good cut.......2004-09-12
I enjoyed Luther's cuts from the 80's. He always had some Cuts that always came in at the right time. He did a Great Job on covers as well.Him&Marcus Miller truly have strong Musical Chemistry.cuts still sound good.Luther is One of the Best vocalists over the past 25-30 years easily.
He Stops to Love.......2002-08-03
I have the record of this at home and I love the hit, Stop to Love.
GREAT.......2001-12-11
I HAVE ALL OF LUTHER VANDROSS SONG ON CD.THIS CD IS MY FAVORITE
CD.
Give you a reason? It's Luther!.......1999-11-24
This and the CDs "Never Too Much" and "Songs" are my favorite Vandross CDs. This CD boasts the hyperkinetic rhythm arrangements of studio wizard/jazz bassist Marcus Miller who was also doing session work with the late great Miles Davis, it has pianist/arranger Nat Adderley, Jr. involved with some of the mellower love songs, it has some of the best session background singers around--Cherry, Lynn, Agee, the gorgeous Lisa Fisher (man, am I envious--all those great ladies), it has two international hits, "Stop To Love" and "Give Me A Reason", it got Greg Hines off Broadway long enough to do a duet, it has the monster mellow jam "So Amazing" and the Bacharach/David cut "Anyone Who Had A Heart".... and IT HAS LUTHER! Who in God's Green Earth wouldn't find Vandross' rich barotone fabulous, I ask you? There's only one Luther and despite what the critics say, this is one of his best. I mean, com'on! This will make your CD player love you forever--maybe even your intimate partner.

Girlfriend counsel outweighs Saw's usual carnal chat on this set--her best of three recent collections. Marion Hall, Saw's real life good-girl, shines through in the gospel, "Glory Be to God." The title track, a sweetly voluptuous country & western lament over a slow-throbbing reggae bass, bares Saw's tender heart. None less than Linda Rondstadt is covering the tune for her next album! "What Is Slackness" is the most blistering attack on institutionalized hypocrisy in recent reggae memory: "Society a blame Lady Saw for the system them create/But when culture did a flop/They never let me t'rough the gate now/As me say `sex'/Them wan' fe jump on me case/...Slackness is when the road wan' fe fix/Slackness is when the government break them promise/Slackness is when the government issue guns." --Elena Oumano
Customer Reviews:
Vintage Saw. . . .......2006-09-22
2 of my most appreciated vibes in all of music: 1 is the seemingly forgotten wickedness of Beenie Man spar Silvercat who was one of the first dj's to prove that he coudl actually make a point and yell at you at the top of his lungs at the same time, forgotten because of his fondness of travelling but not recording these days. The second being the absolutely diving Marion Hall (Lady Saw) over ANY pure dancehall riddim 1994-1997. Lady Saw had a way of just gripping her claws and sticking to any riddim from that era which she rode, and while she never really (and still hasn't) got it to work on a complete album to the perfect level (at least partly do to her love of the odd country ballad her and there) prime and vintage Lady Saw is about as good as any artist from any period of the dancehall.
Saw definitely had a bubbling to her at that which maybe only a few, if any really, have ever had, each tune was easy listening although she would always say something, be it sexual or relationship-wise, that would make you think, but all of the tunes were danceable and not just because 'bubbly' could firmly describe that period in dancehall riddims, many other artists were riding the same productions but not getting the effect and probably besides Beenie Man, no other artist could literally pack a dancefloor in JA better than Saw.
Released way back in 1996, a decade ago (am I really getting that old!) Give Me the Reason was just Saw's second full length studio album (and what a shame she's only released 3 since) and it was a very very solid album, probably not as spectacular as her debut Lover Girl, but still a fine fine effort.
The best song here without a doubt is What is Slackness? A prime example of Saw's talent in the era and a denouncement of the sickly amount of she was receiving at that point in her career for recording slack tunes similar to what her male peers were recording and receiving virtually no criticism at all.
Also check Good Wuk which is probably the biggest hit on the album. Good Wuk was more of a typicla dancehall tune over a Shocking Vibes riddim and at a much faster pace. Check the clever Darnest Thing and Husband a Mine both 2 really 2 fine tunes for Saw. Also check both Condom and the cool message on Love & Understanding which ranges in that fine fine old school dancehall vibe.
Then you have 2 really big tunes for different reason. First is the now infamous Life Without Dick, which is sung as if 'Dick' is her actual man and not. . . something else (as she says, 'lef up to your imagination). The song is shocking and after laughing for a good while you will thoroughly enjoy the story style of the tune. Then there's the second best tune her Name Nuh Stand fi Sex. The song is not too dissimilar to What is Slackness in that it displays an excellent message and at the same time gets the heads rocking back and forth and the hips gridning, just wonderfully done and while there are without a doubt more powerful lyricists out there, NO ONE in the dance could do Lady Saw's songs besides Lady Saw herself.
Overall, I equate this album similar to Vybz Kartel's sophomore (actually it is Kartel holding the candle to the far more veteran artist Saw) album JMT. Both their firsts were much more typical to the artist and in the second they showed they can actually vibe off of something that wasn't, in Saw's case, sex, typical to them as an artist. In the decade since, Saw has proven herself to be quietly quite versatile in the dance and if he is ever so lucky Kartel can do half the work Saw has done. Good album from one of dancehall's finest.
The Queen of Dancehall Reggae !!.......1998-12-19
Lady Saw is better than Patra and better than most male Dancehall artist. Slammin' beats and raw lyrics. This will be a heavy rotation in your car ride!

Customer Reviews:
English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20
The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.
Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.
This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.
You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09
What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.
The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.
A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17
This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.
I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15
I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.
And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.
The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.
The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.
A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Mixed Feelings.......2002-12-30
'Give Me A Reason' is an amazing song. Filled with heart-wrenching despair and melancholy soul, it has vivid lyrics to grab your emotions. I had listened to it upteen times on the Corrs' third studio album, "In Blue", and thought that purchasing the single would be a wise choice. Now, I have mixed feelings.
The Cutfather & Joe Remix of the song is absolutely awful. I'm sorry to say it, because the Corrs have been remixed many times by great people, but whoever decided to add a dance beat to this soulful masterpiece was messing with perfection. The added "bleeps" and "doinks" do nothing but demean what HAD been a flawless performance by Andrea Corr, and the bath bubbles make her sound drunk. I can't stand to listen to it for more than a few seconds. Sorry, guys, but remixing this classic was a bad idea.
All hope is not lost, however, because the album version of the song is featured on the single as well. Why not just buy the album? I wondered that myself -- until I heard track number three.
'Rebel Heart' is a touching instrumental written by violinist Sharon Corr and recorded by the band on "In Blue". It's remixed here, and the new version is better than the original, if that's possible. Imagine the heartache of Ireland's past, coupled with a blind, faith-filled hope for a peaceful future. The emotion of turbulence, pain, hope, joy...it's all magnificently captured in less than five minutes. Haunting, magical, yet gentle, it IS the power of the human spirit over tragedy.
Overall, this single gets four stars. While I can't stand the Remix of 'Give Me A Reason', the album version and touching instrumental are great pieces to hear, and you won't find the new version of 'Rebel Heart' elsewhere. Kudos to the Corrs for another great instrumental track.
Give Me A Reason...Why not to like this!.......2001-07-03
This is a great single. Not only is the remix great, but the addition of the Rebal Heart remix makes this cd a must have for any corrs fan. Or anyone who respects great music with alot of electronic and physical talent by the greatest band ever!

Amazon.com essential recording
By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden

His Best CD.......2007-06-10
I love everything Luther ever made ,but if you want to see what made him great buy this cd.
Just so romantic, and endearing, this sound........2007-01-26
Wonderful way to end a long day with someone you love. He was one of a kind.
Another Luther masterpiece.......2006-12-14
By 1985 Luther Vandross was the premier ballader in R&B. This album spawned four Billboard R&B singles in "'Til My Baby Comes Home," "It's Over Now," "Wait for Love," and "If Only for One Night." It also featured "Creepin" but Luther's the best at ballads in particular If Only For One Night.
Maybe Luther's best.......2006-10-21
The fourth album in what I like to call"The getting to know Luther Trilogy".Four albums that define and sum up this man.We know as "Luther"
1.Never Too Much 1981
2.Forever,For Always,For Love 1982
3.Busy Body 1983
4.The Night I fell in Love 1985
I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.
I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.
Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.
The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.
If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.
Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings
It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.
Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.
My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.
The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.
I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.
This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.
RIP Luther
Luther's greatest.......2005-09-25
