Jimmy Reed-The Essential Boss Man.......2007-02-12
Great, great box set with ALL the hits and ALL THE lesser known classics!
When I'm in the mood to hear Jimmy Reed songs I want them all together so I can "relive" with my buddies those days and the great sounds that we danced to and partied to in our youth! We would ware out the grooves on those Silver and Purple Vee Jay 45's! Terrific liner notes also! A must have!
Greater than Elvis.......2007-01-26
Jimmy Reed was, arguably, greater than Elvis. He was a terrific songwriter, a singer with a laid back delivery, a screeming harmonica, and a cool guitar. Don't be fooled by this nonsense of him being unable to carry a tune, or that he was no master of the guitar or the harmonica. Maybe so. But the seemingly simple arrangements of his songs are really so subtle, inventive and marvelous that Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Keith Richard listened to his records incessantly, trying to figure out how he did it. And the Grateful Dead and Steve Miller loved him.
This being said, it is worth having all of his CDs.
To start, buy this 3-CD box set (and then Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall and Rockin' with Reed). Don't make the mistake of buying another CD boxed set, Jimmy Reed: The Classic Recordings, on the Tomato label. It has a good compilation, but plays at a very low level and has lousy sound quality. An insult to this great blues master's work.

The Original "Stay In My Corner".......2006-09-16
Ok, I can remember my oldest sister giving me a stack of 78's when I was about 11 or 12. One of those records was a song by the Dells named "Why Do You Have To Go" b/w"Dance, Dance Dance. When I played that 78, she and my other sisters sang it, so I figured it was a popular song (in the chitlin' circut) WHY IS NOT ON THIS CD? WHY DO THESE COMPANIES DO THIS? Then why put an alternate cut of "Dry Your Eyes" on here? It's not the one on the original "Oh What A Night" album (Vee-Jay)......as a matter of fact, the entire "Oh What A Night" album is on here execpt "Why Do you have to go" & "Dance, Dance Dance"......what a rip off. Don't get me wrong, I love "Time Makes U CHange", "Dreams Of Contentment", and the classic "Oh WHat A NIght"....my favorite is "Movin On"...but i just get so dissapointed when they don't put all of the songs here. The original "Stay In My Corner" is here too. A lot of people did not know that the Dells recorded if for Vee-Jay before the classic 1968 version. ...anyway if you're a doo wop fan, you will love this.

Customer Reviews:
Uneven but fine collection for new fans........2001-08-26
Well, here they are again! Little Richard's highly durable Vee Jay retreads. You would think that between the three major reissue labels indicated somebody could come up with something previously unreleased - longtime fans beware! Another area of concern is in the misinformation as to writer's credits and the inclusion of material strongly believed to be from another label, possibly from the '70s! Add to this, several tracks found in true stereo elsewhere: in '72 Ala Rcords and in '93 TKO/Charly issued "Goin' Home Tomorrow", "Money Honey", and "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" in long, stereo versions! Having said that, lets identify some worthy cuts for the new fans. "Goin' Home..." is the Fats Domino classic, featuring Don Harris of Don & Dewey on electric violin (historians note that Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention used the same artist in the same vein for their workout on Richard's "Directly From My Heart To You"). "Lawdy..." is a LR vocal and instrumental showcase, a brilliant sound obviously noted by Richard copyists like Paul McCartney and Tom Jones. His piano solo is the best of his career. Three songs from the May, 1965 New York City session are here and are reported to include Jimi Hendrix, Billy Preston, and Don Covay - "Dancing All Around The World", a blistering blues-based blast, "You Better Stop", a contemporary R & B/Rock item, and the soul classic now *finally* recieving it's due recognition on many releases, "I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me", a soul ballad in the "Hold On To What You've Got"-"Time Is On My Side" style but completely overshadowing both in artistry and soul power. The '50s recuts are very disappointing on Vol. One - "Send Me Some Lovin'" (interestingly enough also recorded by Dean Martin around this time) is the only cool one. Richard's voice is *not* in shape on the others like "Long Tall Sally" and "Slippin' and Slidin'". Lucille" kicks off in an exciting way but very soon degenerates in a messy arrangement. A great vocal is heard on a new tune, "Something Moves In My Heart", a rockin' soul item reminiscent of Sam Cooke's "Ain't That Good News". Another new song, "Groovy Little Suzie" is super - a '50s type mover by Mr. John S. Marascalco, a writer/co-writer of many LR Specialty hits. (A longer version is found on the vinyl "Wild & Frantic Little Richard" on Modern). There's enough here to recommend Vol. One if Vol. Two is also considered.
