John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business). As with any attempt to cover Beatles-related music, results are hit and miss, with kudos going to Snow Patrol and the Postal Service for capturing the starkness of "Isolation" and "Grow Old with Me," respectively, Mexican rock band Jaguares for uncovering the fear and fury in "Gimme Some Truth," and (surprise!) Christina Aguilera for nailing the complex composition and mood of "Mother." Other highlights include Jackson Browne's piano-led "Oh My Love," Green Day's louder straight take on "Working Class Hero," and the Black Eyed Peas turning "Power to the People" into a gospelly protest. Will resurrecting 30-to-40-year-old messages of peace and love be enough to help end the brutalities in Darfur? That remains to be seen. But selecting John Lennon as the author of those messages will make people listen and, with this collection, may keep them listening. --Scott Holter

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-06

I bought this CD after having heard the Jack Johnson version of "Imagine," which I loved. Unfortunately, it turns out that that is the only song on the CD that I will ever actually listen to. (Why would they even put Avril Lavigne on there?)

What it really comes down to for me, though, is that I would rather listen to John Lennon's own versions of his music any day.

5 out of 5 stars Supreme.......2007-08-04

This is a very nice collaction of one of the best song writers of all time

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-08-04

This CD is for such a good cause, plus the artists who re-compose John Lennon's songs do a fantastic job on it.

5 out of 5 stars Best tribute CD EVER.......2007-08-03

Each track is perfect for each group. No-one was out of their element. Green Day's version of Working Class Hero haunted me as much as the original. I enjoyed every track....And I am a John Lennon fan...and found the music truly a tibute to his genius.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Boy.......2007-07-30

Fantastic cause brings together fine performers who bring to life the intensity and focus of one of our greatest singer/songwriters ever. His insight into the world is amazing. The only negative thing one can say about this album is that it reminds us of the fact that no one can sing his songs the way he did. He was a treasure who a younger generation should be exposed to more often.

Amazon.com essential recording

The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as "the Little Sparrow" in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek Rath

5 out of 5 stars The more you listen, the more you love.......2007-08-02

I have been a fan of Edith Piaf for about 15 years when I first "discovered" her. Although I have been to visit her grave in Paris some time ago, for some strange reason I had not personally purchased her music until now. The more I listen to this CD, the more fascinated I have become - her voice and the sheer power of it is so poigniant! Listening to her while driving my convertible on a lovely summer evening is just the best. I have purchased this CD to send to my son who is in the military, a multiple time Iraq veteran and recently commissioned officer - he speaks fluent French and I have told him that altho I know he will understand the words much better than I do, there is no mistaking the sentiment and meaning of every song she sings. I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Selections of Her Recordings.......2007-07-26

This Edith Piaf collection is great. She recorded a tremendous amount of music. This CD captures the best of her recordings.

5 out of 5 stars She said about her singing better than anyone ever would,.......2007-07-17

"For me, singing is a way of escaping. It is another world. I'm no longer on earth." When I hear her singing, I am no longer in my world, I am in the world of music, love, passion, irony and humor, breaking hearts and smiles through the tears, love found and lost forever but never in the world of regrets. She always looked the life in the eye and she regretted nothing. She was a small woman (1 m 42 cm) with the greatest, strongest, and most recognizable voice around the globe. Her voice with the "r" rolled in such manner that it would make your spine to vibrate, effortlessly takes you out of your realty to the place and time that have long gone but will be forever alive in her songs, "La vie en rose, "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," "C'est L'Amour (It's Love), and many more. "The Voice of the Sparrow: The Very Best of Edith Piaf" delivers the promises of its title, its 18 songs are among the best and most famous of Edith Piaf but they are just a little part of the singer's body of work which spans over almost 30 years and includes hundreds of songs, over 80 of which she had composed herself.

5 out of 5 stars "The little sparrow" ,Edith Piaf sings her best hits!.......2007-06-26

This Cd has all of Edith's best known hits, sung by "the little sparrow" herself.

The re-recordings are quite excellent....well done....smooth and crisp.

The songs are well chosen and nicely arranged in sequence.

Edith`s voice sounds as good as ever in this BEST HITS Cd.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic compilation.......2007-06-23

Edith Piaf's voice is like no others. It is husky yet brash, sultry and deep. Hearing this music takes you to another place. She was a fantastic singer with a wonderful low range a great cd.

To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

Album Description

There's a smart balance of traditional Hawaiiana and contemporary tunes on this CD. There's heart-tugging warmth along with unexpected chuckles. The end result is a candid, honest reinforcement of his vocal breadth.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Music.......2007-08-03

I bought this for a friend of mine who loved his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". She didn't know who sang it but we listened to it at her birthday party and this was it. Just Iz and his ukeleli. Anyway, we enjoyed the rest of the album too. His style was so gentle and pure.
The world lost one of it's beautiful spirits.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening.......2007-07-30

This is my second CD by IZ I will keep collecting his music as long as he keeps producing it. It offers a taste of pure Hawaii. Don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air!.......2007-07-28

Iz and his music are truely a breath of fresh air in a world full of cookie cutter music. He's a master of the ukulele, and has a voice as sweet and clear as a warm Hawaiian day. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" is beyond perfection. It fills the soul with joy and lifts you above the clouds...above the rainbow. A must for the Hawaiian music collector.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to a happy place.......2007-07-23

I got this CD mainly for "Somewhere over the Rainbow", but do enjoy the entire range of songs. Would recommend it, however, I probably will not buy any more of his stuff; a little goes a long way.

5 out of 5 stars You need this classic for your Hawaiian music collection.......2007-07-21

This guy has an amazing voice and this album shows it off very well. Contains the "Over the Rainbow" version seen on TV and many other songs. It is also a "political" statement in music. Iz was anti-US and favored Hawaiian independence. But, still an amazing album and music.

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. The use of electronics is so light as to be almost undetectable, which will please fans of a more organic orchestral sound. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-04

This soundtrack is excellent all the way through. With more variety than the first one...and I dont even want to mention the second one...it has graced my CD player more than any CD in the months since I bought it.
The music is well performed, well written, and well put togehter. Each song seems to complement the next. Overall, one of the best CDs I have ever purchased

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-29

Almost as fabulous as Johnny Depp:) Best of the 3 soundtracks but then again I felt this was the best 3 movies as well. The score is inventive and the first still gives me chills.

5 out of 5 stars Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Soundtrack.......2007-07-26

The CD came delivered on time and packed well. It has also been very enjoyable and definitely a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Hoist The Colours!!!.......2007-07-25

I have always been a fan of soundtracks. I really adore the works of Harry Gregson-Williams, Danny Elfman and, of course, John Williams. I now can say I have a new composer that I can add to my list; Hans Zimmer, the composer for Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and he also Overproduced the score for The Curse of the Black Pearl. Compared to past "attempts" I believe that Hans Zimmer has hit the jackpot.

The CD "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is unbelievably the best CD of the three. It contains 13 tracks including, one of my favorites, Hoist the Colours (the song the boy sings at the beginning of the movie, which becomes the back tone of the entire movie). It is a must buy for all soundtrack, movie, Disney and pirate lovers. I have never listened to a soundtrack this much since John Williams Star Wars Episode 1 Special Edition CD.

But there is a draw back for me. The CD is a Digipak. A Digipak is a CD that has cardboard-like outside rather than a plastic cover like most CD's. I don't `hate' them, I just don't like seeing things of mine getting ripped. So if you don't want your case/album art warped, get it on iTunes.

Overall it is a great CD and a must buy! " Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" soundtrack gets 5 stars out of 5.

My name is Amone. Adios!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-07-17

This is the best soundtrack in the "Pirates" series. Hans Zimmer has melded the Eastern sounds with the West and composed an intricate melody which is hard to forget. My favorite soundtrack so far!

Second only to Riverdance as an international Irish showbiz phenomenon, previous installments of this Platinum-selling extravaganza have become beloved PBS standards. The original buxom quartet of female singers, Lisa, Maev, Orla, and Chloe, have duly been joined by Hayley and are, as usual, backed by a full symphony orchestra and choir, plus enough traditional instruments (the house fiddler, Mairead, is a powerhouse) to keep things legit. The material ranges from folkloric ("Dúlaman" is best known from Clannad's legendary rendering), to a standard from another Celtic nation ("Caledonia," Dougie McLean's love letter to his native Scotland), to classical lite (Handel's poignant "Laschia Ch'io Pianga"), to movie hits ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a delicately lovely, a cappella, close-harmony treatment), to homegrown New Age (Enya's "Newgrange"). Most tracks are produced to turn, presented in the aural equivalent of Technicolor or day-glo, in which colors pop while diverging ever so slightly from nature. In short, although the album offers fresh material, it covers old ground -- but this is exactly what the act's target audience expects and desires. Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. The deluxe package offers four bonus tracks, three of them live, plus a silver claddagh charm. --Christina Roden

Loved the range of voices. Had already seen the show on PBS and have the previous CD and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD ever.......2007-07-10

I have never heard such beautiful harmony and vocals! The music was just wonderful! The orchestra was outstanding! I have already decided that "The Prayer" is going to be sung at my wedding. I can't help but cry every time I hear that song sung by Chloe (I have already bought the sheet music for it:))There were a couple of songs that got a little boring but for the most part it was GREAT!!! The DVD is magnificent as well! It has about 6 or 7 more songs.

This is a CD that can be enjoyed by all who like M E H DI, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. After seeing them on PBS, getting the first CD and seeing them in concert I am hooked. These ladies can SING!
The bonus songs make the album definatly worth the extra few dollars...it includes the fun, upbeat, songs Celtic Woman performs at the ending of their live shows....I was so hoping they would put them on an album. Live or not, the sound quality is PERFECTION, they sound studio quality. I was a little hesistant at first about the addition of the new member...but she rounds the group up nicely.

Angelique Kidjo has four Grammy nominations, a mantel-full of international awards, several dance hits, and notable appearances on film and TV soundtracks to her credit (to say nothing of being a major style icon and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador). So this Benin-born, New York-based singer-composer has long since gotten past having to prove anything to anybody--other than to herself. On Djin Djin (the title refers to a bell that sounds at daybreak in parts of Africa), she is self-indulgent in the best possible sense, shooting for a big, glossy, super-pop sound that nonetheless remains essentially, even devoutly, African in inspiration and execution. Produced by Tony Visconti (The Moody Blues, T. Rex, David Bowie, Boomtown Rats, and Morrissey), the release is a bewitching amalgam, with guest stints from Joss Stone, Carlos Santana, Branford Marsalis, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Malian husband-and-wife team Amadou and Mariam, and noted reggae scion Ziggy Marley. Kidjo, her salty-sweet voice in top form, moves confidently from ballad to club track to homespun earthmover. She never for a second relinquishes control of the festivities, even during a hectic, Haitian-rara-influenced cover of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" and "Lon Lon," in which she takes on--and takes over--French composer Ravel's "Bolero." --Christina Roden

With DJIN DJIN (pronounced "gin gin"), Angelique Kidjo returns to the soul of Benin - and, for the first time, shares it with a cast of all-star guests, in a marriage of cultures that has significance far beyond music alone. Inspired by the traditions and culture of Kidjo's native Benin in West Africa, the title of the album refers to the sound of the bell that greets the beginning of a new day for Africa.

The diversity represented by Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, Branford Marsalis, producer Tony Visconti, and the others who contribute to DJIN DJIN speaks to the lesson of this project: For all the differences in the music of our time, the river of Africa flows through it all.

The key was to build DJIN DJIN on a Beninese foundation. The heartbeat, then, comes from percussionists Crespin Kpitiki and Benoit Avihoue, both members of Benin's Gangbé Brass Band. Details of their country's rhythmic heritage, specific in some cases to individual villages, feed the rhythms they lay down throughout the album.

To this mix Kidjo welcomes players whose backgrounds complement the idea of DJIN DJIN: drummer Poogie Bell, known for his work with Erykah Badu and Chaka Khan; funk keyboard wizard Amp Fiddler, whose credits include Prince and George Clinton; Larry Campbell, whose multi-instrumental work has adorned the music of Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, and Paul Simon; Senegalese bass giant Habib Faye, a fixture with Youssou N'Dour; guitarists Lionel Loueke, from jazz legend Herbie Hancock's band; Romero Lubambo, a Brazilian wonder whose credits include Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves; Joao Mota, from Guinea-Bissau and kora master Mamadou Diabate.

Produced by Tony Visconti. (David Bowie, T. Rex, Morrissey)

2 out of 5 stars Anjelique Crashes Badly.......2007-07-27

Compared to all her previous releases this is sad. Presumably by duetting with 'name' stars she's trying to break into the American market. All of her native Benin funk and energy has been diluted. Angelique Kidjoe and Josh Groban? No No No. I listened to it three times in case certain tracks improved with repeated listening. Not. I'll give her another chance with her next release but hope that if she decides to hook up with others they are a bit more adventurous. Natacha Atlas if you're listening this is not the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe 4.5 stars, but still stellar.......2007-07-01

Angelique Kidjo's amazing whether she's covering Hendrix in "VooDoo Child" or singing West African tunes. Her roots are much wider than just her country of origin. It'd be hard for me to name a favorite among these gems. I love the people she's selected to work with. "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone may be the kind of duet that's going to propel her right up to the top of the charts where she belongs. Smart move, lady, for sure, but I also love the songs where Angelique sings her own music alone.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful West African soul.......2007-06-22

Angelique Kidjo is one of those rare artists who has the Midas touch. No matter who she's performing with, no matter what she's performing, she makes beautiful music. While "Djin Djin" can be considered one of her more mainstream albums, she still proudly shows her African roots. In a sense,it's not surprising it's sold alongside coffee at Starbucks; "Djin Djin" is as potent as a cup of steaming java.

The opening "Ae Ae" is anthemic;it's a power ballad in which Kidjo calls on her fellow Africans to be self-sufficient. The title track is a jazzy collaboration with Alicia Keys and Branford Marsalis. It's Benin meets the Big Easy. Kidjo does an amazing cover of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" with Joss Stone. The '60s British Invasion gets an African makeover, transforming it into a tribal rave-up. Kidjo and smoky-voiced Peter Gabriel complement each other in "Salala." A thumb piano gives "Senamou" a deeply African flavor. "Sedjedo", a duet with reggae heir Ziggy Marley, doesn't quite work. Marley is relegated to the sidelines. However, Kidjo's rousing singing saves the piece. The same goes for "Pearls." Josh Groban's operatic voice is unsuited to the style of the song. It's Afropop meets Latin rock (since Carlos Santana plays the guitar),not the Three Tenors or Il Divo. Kidjo's amazing singing again saves the song from becoming a novelty song. In "Papa","Arouna","Awan N'La","Emma" and "Mama Golo Papa" Kidjo shows she doesn't need collaborators. She's still going strong since her debut in 1990. She covers difficult issues such as marital conflict and divorce soulfully. Finally, in "Lonlon" Kidjo transforms Ravel's annoying and overplayed "Bolero" into rousing,toe-tapping Afropop. Instead of being filler or a song worth skipping, "Lonlon" serves as a grand finale.

Angelique Kidjo is accomplished,as a person and as an artist. She is a UN Goodwill Ambassador;she has her own charity,Batonga. In Bono's guest-edited issue of "Vanity Fair" about Africa, Harry Belafonte praises her activism. Angelique Kidjo's music is truly angelic. "Djin Djin" is a great introduction to her music, and is a perfect mainstream introduction to African music. It's as rousing and flavorful as a good hot cup of coffee.

5 out of 5 stars First Introduction To Angelique Kidjo.......2007-06-20

This is my first introduction to any of Angelique Kidjo's music. I bought this compact disc for myself as a birthday present based on the reviews it has received and listening to the short musical segments found on Amazon.Com.

After recently listening to "Djin, Djin" on a 4 hour road trip, I feel in love with the music & lyrics! The music is fantastic and varied from song to song.... Angelique Kidjo is phenomenal as an artist. I also enjoyed the musical guests performing on "Djin, Djin" too. This compact disc is perfect as background music while long distance driving, at home relaxing, during dinner parties, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Black Ivory Soul - but still enhoyable.......2007-06-11

This is a good release, with many guests on it, but not quite as accessable as the Black Ivory Soul CD. However, it will get you up and moving.

Album Description

Rooney is: Ned Brower - Drums, backing vocals Taylor Locke - Guitars, backing vocals Robert Schwartzman - Vocals, Guitar Louie Stevens - Keyboards Matthew Winter -- Bass

Their second album "Calling The World" - a pop-rock manifesto and contribution to the rock-pop body of work initiated by The Beatles and The Beach Boys and propagated by subsequent groups such as Queen, E.L.O., Cheap Trick, The Cars, Jellyfish and Weezer.

Lead singer Robert Schwartzman wrote all of the songs on "Calling the World" after searching for a sound that would at once rock and "also make people dance."

The first single from "Calling the World" is "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?" - an effervescent head-bobber with an infectious chorus. The colorful video was shot in various locations in Los Angeles by noted director Benny Boom (50 Cent, Missy Elliot) and depicts a day in the California life of Rooney, complete with afternoon wake-up, beach bar-b-q house party, classic car Hollywood cruise and late-night Silver Lake club romp.

Other songs from the album include the mini-rock opera "I Should Have Been After You," "Believe In Me," a driving synth-propelled call for a leap of faith, "What For" a breezy and melodic slice of friendly advice, and "Help Me Find My Way," a poignant ode to Robert's late father.

Producer John Fields (Andrew W.K., Switchfoot) recorded "Calling The World" with Rooney in Los Angeles by harnessing the band's expert musicianship via live takes and extemporaneous improvisations, at times even using a laptop to capture the urgency of the moment. "Rooney" sold 400,000 albums of their debut and toured extensively across the United States and Europe. The members of Rooney recently hosted a Monday-night residency at Los Angeles' renown Roxy nightclub during the entire month of April 2007 so they could play their new "Calling the World" material for their loyal, hometown fans first. They were joined on stage by friends to perform covers including Phantom Planet, The Donnas, The Chapin Sisters, Ben Lee, Susana Hoffs (who performed Walk Like An Egyptian with the band), and Cherrytree Records label mates The Feeling.

Rooney released their eponymous, debut album in 2002 when the median age of the band was 19 years old.

Rooney is a favorite of other bands who are constantly asking to hit the road with them. They've toured with Weezer, The Strokes, All American Rejects, Travis, Pete Yorn. In May 2007, Rooney embark on a club tour of the UK and Continental Europe and return to the US for a national tour as opening act for Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a great add for Rooney!.......2007-07-30

I have been a big fan of Rooney since their self titled CD came out and I have long anticipated their sophomore album. It was not a disappointment whatsoever. They have a great 70's sound with their own style mixed in. The lyrics and all of the music is great! Good job Rooney!

1 out of 5 stars Does the term "cruel and unusual punishment" mean anything to you?.......2007-07-29

This album was a huge let down. I was huge on the first album, but this album just blows. I don't know what the producers were smoking.. but it clearly was some pretty good stuff, because this album is just lame-sounding. It's horrible. My girlfriend and I are listening to it as I write this, and she just heard the first album about a week ago and is already hooked. I can guarantee she is not feeling this album and neither am I. This cd used is so cheap, but it's only been out for 2+ weeks.. already seeing 60% price drops, because the album sucks, the first one will live on forever.

4 out of 5 stars well worth the wait.......2007-07-27

i got rooney's debut album probably july or aug. of '03 like two monthes after it was released. i was hooked on them after about 3 listens of that album and the long wait til the next album began. it was a really long wait (about 4 years) but it was really worth it. this is probably my favorite album released this year, it is so catchy. they have matured alot over the 4 years between albums and changed their sound a bit too. the first album sounded more like a combination of the beach boys and the beatles. where the new album while at times still sounds like them but cause of the addition of strings on some songs it leans more towards a combo of electric light orchestra and weezer. at times (alot of times) i think i'm listening to a new ELO song. if you are a fan of weezer or especially ELO you'll like it. also watch out for the almost country sounding "don't come around again." bottom line of you liked their last album, ELO, weezer, the beach boys, and the beatles you should love this album.
favorite tracks :
-when did your heart go missing?
-i should've been after you
-don't come around again
-are you afraid?
-love me or leave me
-paralyzed
-help me find my way

4 out of 5 stars Rooney does it again.......2007-07-26

I was absolutely in love with Rooney's first album, so it was natural that I would pick up the second. I found myself this morning after listening to the disc off and on for about 4 days wondering if I was trying to convince myself I liked this album or if I actually like it. The fact is that it has grown on me. This is not to mean that it's not a stellar album, but it's hard to live up to a first great album. I'm not going to go song by song here, but here are a few comments... "Calling the World" is truly a great song with all of its layers and sonic punch, "Love Me or Leave Me" recalls "I'm Shakin'" from the first album, "Tell Me Soon" is just fab. There are so many instances on this album where you can hear the attempt to update the California sound and "Pet Sounds" influences of the Beach Boys. The attention to detail is so very apparent, too, and it's clear the stories about throwing away 3 albums in the process of making this one are true. Though I haven't found a clear thread or theme that winds its way through, it's a great album to listen to beginning to end just the same. Perhaps that the best praise a band can get--when someone says their album is best listened to whole like "American Idiot" by Green Day, "2112" by Rush or "Sgt. Pepper" by the Beatles. By all rights these guys should be enjoying the same kind of commercial success as the All-American Rejects do....hopefully this one does it for them.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Growth!!!.......2007-07-26

They're sound has matured since they're last album. The writing is better, the singing is stonger and the music is rockin'!! I love EVERY song on this album!! There are no fillers here! I have it in my Mp3 player and it won't be leaving any time soon! Look out world Rooney has arrived!!!

2 out of 5 stars stinky for Einstein.......2007-08-03

Generally Einstein is always a winner but this was not in our book (Baby and Me) Try someone else before buying . The libary is a great resource to check it out ahead.

2 out of 5 stars Lame.......2007-07-22

I was really disappointed in this CD. I was expecting a toned-down version of real classical music, but it sounds really fake and tinkley and weird. Not soothing at all.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds like a cheap plastic toy.......2007-06-20

I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.

Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

4 out of 5 stars would make you sleepy.........2007-06-15

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.

4 out of 5 stars Kid's Music.......2007-06-08

I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.

Fueled by healthy public appetite for traditional melodies and quasi-ethnic roots, the crossover genre continues to flourish with this debut release from Ireland's Celtic Woman ensemble. The brainchild of Sharon Browne, Dave Kavanaugh (founders of Ireland's successful Celtic Collections label) and young Riverdance touring company musical director David Downes, CW's five young women musicians and vocalists offer up an ever pleasant, Eire-savvy fusion of folk, pop and classical influences. Avoiding the intrusive, club-beat/sex kitten window dressing of Bond, the ensemble tackles material that ranges from the expected (spare, lovely covers of "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria") to more adventurous fare like "Nella Fantasia" (Ennio Morricone's vocal adaptation of his rapturous theme from The Mission) and Enya's "Orinoco Flow." Elsewhere, "The Butterfly" offers up fiddle-fueled take on their Riverdance parallels (which also get a workout on the live bonus tracks), if renditions of Downes' originals like "One World" and "Send Me a Song" and "Someday" from Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame hew slavishly to the middle of the road -- which largely seems the album's easy-listening intention. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Totally Hooked!.......2007-06-27

True confession time: I am hooked on Celtic Woman . . . and it's getting worse! Or should I say better? The first Celtic Woman album I bought was Chloe's Walking in the Air, then it was Meav's A Celtic Journey, and today I finally got the group's famous blow-out debut. Several of the tracks are also on Chloe's album, so I wasn't sure if I should get it, but I'm so glad I did. There are a lot of songs I haven't heard before, and even the one's that are on Chloe's CD have different arrangements and more of a Celtic flare here. Favorite tracks: 1) Walking in the Air, 2) May it Be (so beautiful, have never heard it before), 3) Orinoco Flow (I always heard of it as Sail Away -- was so delighted!), 4) The Soft Goodbye (warm and touching), 5) You Raise Me Up (an all time favorite, and the song they were singing on TV the moment I walked into my Grandparent's house and discovered this whole new world of music!). Celtic Woman is not just for fans of Celtic music. It is for anyone who appreciates beauty, culture, and inspiration. Celtic Woman, "May it be you'll journey on to light the day."

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-06-27

Fantastic music! What a joy to listen to. And the DVD is well worth the purchase as well. We have listened to both DVD and CD many times over and even loaned them out a few times to friends. A definite must for anyone that enjoys beautiful Irish music.

5 out of 5 stars sailing away through the cosmos of my soul.......2007-06-26

Celtic woman is an album rich with atmospheric delight that fuels the flame of desire in my groin. In the still moments of the night, the Celtic Woman and I traveled starspeed through the cosmos...the cosmos of my soul. Of the stars we made a nest, and I gave it to my lascivious little girl-child with the passion of midnight lovers in a lavishing and spontaneous tryst. It was like seeing the world from the first time...so distantly from our cosmic love nest. This incandescent love affair would have been nothing without the shimmering and enchanting beauty that is...Celtic Woman.

Lush...extravagant...heavenly...enchanting...captivating...mouthwatering...paralyzing...tantalizing...enrapturous...electrifying...tearing...jolting...violating...opening...closing...raging...typing...wiping...crying...cleaning...organizing...disorganizing...energizing...regionalizing...immigrating...love-staining...bleaching...breaking...tapering...circumsizing...exhasperating...womanizing...shoe-sizing...myrrhmizing...unescaping...unleashing...power-washing...gaping...bleeding...fermenting...mummifying...people dying...niggas starving...bitches bleedin'...gettin rich or dyin' tryin'...deodorizing...and not to mention, breathing the crisp air of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-18

The Irish lass in me loves the genre. The singer in me loves the artistry. Since buying it, I have given this CD again and again as a gift to friends who love music, Celtic or otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic and haunting.......2007-06-13

Found these gals on public t.v. They are just wonderful. In a time when you can't make out most vocals of current pop music, you'll enjoy being able to understand and appreciate these lovely songs and very gifted singers.

5 out of 5 stars Edith Piaf CD.......2007-07-25

Excellent CD of original works and pleasure to hear after seeing recent movie, La Vie En Rose. Better selection of songs than movie CD in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Great Singer! Great CD!.......2007-07-19

Definitely a must-have for those who grew up in the 40's and the 50's. Good listening music and what a solid voice! I will never get tired of listening to Edith Piaf.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Compilation of Edith Piaf.......2007-03-09

Such a pleasure to hear so many songs that Ms. Piaf made famous especially, "Milord", "La Vie En Rose", and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien". A great compilation! I only wish a word booklet had been included, but you can't have everything. Ms. Piaf's voice is more than enough!

5 out of 5 stars Eternelle.......2007-02-17

The songs are wonderful, Edith Piaf has a beautiful voice. The songs are sung in French, a masterpiece.
