Among the originators of the Philly soul sound of the late '60s and pre-disco '70s, the Delfonics fashioned hit after hit with the same basic formula of ultra-romantic crooning, three-part harmonies, and a supremely mellow accompaniment that came with a pillow of lush string orchestrations. The 20 Delfonics hits collected on La-La Means I Love You--including their best-known songs, "La-La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)"--amount to R&B easy-listening, often soothing to the degree they become aural wallpaper. At times, though, this stuff can transcend its own schmaltz. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars La La Means Great Music Inside.......2007-07-16

Delfonics fans-take a listen. Every track is here, excellent recordings, and still the lush group blend that takes you there and back. It's a smooth ride!

4 out of 5 stars Soul Heaven.......2007-06-04

A great soul album. I missed out on the Delfonics in the 70's, but was alerted to what they were by the Quentin Tarantino film "Jackie Brown". Great songs, performed with true conviction and musicality.

5 out of 5 stars TY BESS(THE MUSIC MAN).......2006-12-23

Out of all the best of cd,s this collection really has the best of the group!.The classic La la la means i love you, over and over, told you so and didnt i blow your mine is just the tip of the ice berg.A group that thom bell(master producer of the spinners early albums with atlantic records)work with and they nail every song on this cd.The so called r& b out today can,t hold a candle to one of the masters of r&b the mighty delfonics enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Delfonics were bad! .......2006-09-17

I remember being able to hit all the high notes you'll hear on this excellent compilation of lush Philly Soul. If I try it now, I'm off work for three days. When I first heard "He Don't Really Love You" (not included here) I was like, "WHO IS THIS?????" By the time they hit with "You've Been Untrue" (also not included), I knew they were a regional group bound for the big-time. Enter La-La (Means I Love You) and the rest is....well you know.... Anyway, I'm proud to own this disc, and like a dream come true, the 4th disc on the nostalgia inducing Cameo-Parkway 1957 - 1967 Box Set contains both of those pre-breakout tunes I've mentioned. The Delfonics? When you get right down to it, these guys were bad!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A good start..., and didn't War sing...."where was you at"....!?.......2006-04-05

Rhythm & blues music listeners were not necessarily Doo-Wop listeners, who did not necessarily move to the new sound of the sixties, Motown etc., and those not necessarily to the sweet soul sound of the early 70s, or on to the disco sound of the later 70s and on......... Point being, music has always had a tendency of impacting (especially teenagers) the listener as tied in to the era released. That does not mean old school music cannot be enjoyed by non era listeners, good music, as Lou Rawls so eloquently put it.... "will last forever" but, as an example if the question is raised "where was you at" when you first heard the 45 "My New Love" by the Delfonics (so often played on urban radio stations in '68 (also on the "Sounds Of Sexy Soul" lp) and an overlooked song on "hits" cds (do the cd song compilers even know?), what is one's reply? Beginning with their debut single, 1966 "He Don't Really Love You" on the obscure "Moon Shot" record label, followed in 1967 by the 45 "You've Been Untrue"- Cameo-Parkway label, through the last album release in 1974 on Philly Groove Records, the Delfonics music has been sought by those who know and love, "East Coast Sweet Soul" and the Philly Sound". It is a type of music! The writer is taken aback when reading, "This stuff can transcend it's own schmaltz"? "Stuff"? Whoa-a! This is music of an era, late 60s - mid 70s. "Where was we at...., when these songs and albums were released? Fifties "Doo-Wop" or 90s "House" music may be far from everyone's taste but, for those impacted by the music of, at the time, just as relevant to them as the various types and era of music listened to and enjoyed by others, are to them. I personally find it difficult to believe a truly insightful review can be written about music unless the writer was "there" during the era of release. An era has it's own "feel". For those who liked/loved the music of the Delfonics, this compilation is a good start, it has 20 songs on it. The reason the Delfonics albums have long since been chased collectible albums is because the songs not on the few, "hits" cds are harbored there, "My New Love", "For The Love I Gave To You", etc., etc., etc., not on the "hits" releases. Recently, all their albums except "Tell Me This Is A Dream"-1972, have been reissued, finally! With "La La Means I Love You"-1967, "The Sounds Of Sexy Soul"-1968, "The Delfonics"-1970, "Alive & Kicking-1974", and the unreleased (in 1976) lp "The Professionals", released on cd, the music of the Delfonics (minus their first 2 releases, the two 45s) is now availible to all, at digital sound quality! This cd, loaded with sweet soul classics but, not all! The album reissues contain more! The Delfonics, it's Buy Time!

1 out of 5 stars fool me once.............2007-02-22

this shipment really made me feel ripped off. this is not EVEN the original delfonics (with eddie holman). it isn't even a good remake of these tunes. very dissapointing.

3 out of 5 stars Can't Knock A Guy (or Group) For Trying!.......2005-12-03

The Delfonic's Thom Bell produced, Philly Groove label sounds are decades long since passed here. If seeking to hear that level of great music, one must seek elsewhere. That being said, as a Delfonics fan, the purchase of this cd was a foregone conclusion. I found it interesting enough not to discard. It would be nice to see if there could be a "reunion" album produced by Thom Bell, using real piano, drums, etc. William has enough left to help pull it off.

1 out of 5 stars Delfonics - Greatest Hits & More.......2005-04-30

These are not the songs they played on the radio if I had to do it again I would not buy this cd. I am working on returning the cd back to seller for credit.

5 out of 5 stars You're In Store For A Wonderful Trip............2004-12-26

We all know how certain songs and types of music can evoke memories in the heart and mind. This magnificent CD transferred me back to the days when life was an exciting journey and I discovered love for the first time. I have always, always LOVED The Delfonics and listened to them endlessly during my youth in Brooklyn, NY in the 70s. The track "I Gave To You" has been hard to find along with "Baby I Love You". The vocals are as perfect and precise as if the group was performing live in your living room. I'm thrilled beyond words to finally see a CD that includes both. If you're a true fan of this awesome group, you'll HAVE to include this CD in your collection. I guarantee you won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars maybe the best vocal group ever.......2004-03-17

The delfonics have a sound that makes all other vocal groups (with a few exceptions )seem plain because there is something enchanting about their harmonies that to me. . . is pure soul.

4 out of 5 stars What some market supply can do!.......2006-03-29

This cd is the reissue of the Delfonics 2nd album, as titled -1968. For many years, prior to this reissue on cd, Delfonics fans seeking to obtain a mint- copy of the original album searched the boxes at many a record show hunting, yet hardly finding! Interesting, that the rules of supply/demand surely apply. Due to ample supply at this time, the digitally remastered, crystal clear cd can enter a buyer's music collection at some very attractive prices. Whereas, the 38 year vintage lp, mint- condition, is of limited numbers, wherever they be worldwide, are collectible items....., and therefore command collectible prices. For this album Thom Bell was still at the helm as the group's arranger/producer. It would be great if a Philadelphia radio station, such as WDAS-FM, would invite one of the premier architects (and legend), of the "Philly Sound" in for an interview during one of it's old-school broadcasts, to secure, if the right questions are asked, what would be some of the most interesting information about the "Philly Sound" during the beginning, and height of it's glory years? As the Delfonics first, and greatest producer, regarding this album, it would be interesting to know what, and by whom, the decisions were made to mix this album with a larger percentage of non-original Delfonics tracks? William Hart's outstanding, and legendary high tenor, along with Bell's arranging expertise helped insure this follow-up lp to the 1967 debut album "La La Means I Love You" was going to sell strong in urban areas, East Coast if not nationwide. "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "Somebody Loves You", and the chased killer ballad "My New Love", which somehow seemed to escape the attention of early "greatest hits" cd releases, fuel this cd to must have status for Delfonics fans and sweet soul music collectors. At this time, regarding Delfonics albums, only the 1972 album "Tell Me This Is A Dream", has yet to see cd reissue daylight. To obtain it, the hunt for the vinyl is one's search. If a sweet soul music collector, this cd is a must in one's music collection. The Delfonics, need more be said?

This cd has the perfect title: "Sounds of Sexy Soul" With classic songs like 'you can't be loving him' and 'everytime I see my baby' WOW, you can't go wrong with this cd. I have mine, do you have yours? If you're a Delfonic junkie like me, you'll love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Roots of Sweet Philly Soul.......2002-03-08

This album from 1968 marked the beginnings of the Sweet "Philly Soul" sound of the 70s, with lovely vocal harmonies set to lush orchestral backgrounds.

"Beak Your Promise," as well as the remakes, are well done. But it's realy interesting to listen to "Can You Remember." Most people today associate this song with the Jackson 5's lovely version, but this is the original and is just as fine.

5 out of 5 stars LaLa - all-time classic.......2001-06-16

LaLa Means I love you is the greatest love song ever recorded! Of course that is my opinion, but if not the greatest, one of the greatest. Thank God this classic lp is now on cd for our pleasure. The cd also contains a sleeper song: 'can you remember' Check that one out! You want to impress your R&B friends, own everything you can by the Delfonics.

5 out of 5 stars I must be dreaming !!!.......2006-08-05

Am one of the all time biggest fans of the Delfonics, love everything that they did. But for the life of me I can't began to imagine why "Tell me this is a dream" has been overlooked by so many supposedly Delfonics fans and experts. I think William Hart was one of the true "Geniuses" of love theme music of our time. So, will someone reissure Tell me this a dream I tired of searching for it, it is truly a lost treasure !!!

5 out of 5 stars This 1970 Classic IS WORTH IT.......2005-01-18

Growing up back in the days in Harlem NYC, my Aunt wore this album out to death. Every single song A CLASSIC. The Delfonics has one of the best REAL TIGHT HARMONIES, something what's now missing with the music of today. The cut "Delfonics Theme (How Could you)" The musicians (Also a part of Gamble & Huff's TSOP)they really get down on this cut just listen to it you don't hear no electronics or drum machines. If you don't add this classic to your collection, it won't be complete. Even to this day I have the original vinyl I still listen to this classic.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2002-04-09

Anything done by the Delfonic's is worth the price. With that said, anything during the 70's by the Delfonic's is worth its weight in gold! This was a great LP while I was in high school, this is still a great LP! In my opinion, William Hart has the best false ever!

5 out of 5 stars Very Soulful Album&endless Jams.......2002-03-29

so glad to finally get this Disc. The Delfonics were far more than just a Greatest Hits Package act.this Set is well Arranged,&the Vocals are Smoking all the way through.come Summer time I can listen to this Set all out in the Sun&just lay back.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong with this.......2002-03-08

1970 was a great year for Soul music, and this album certainly helped matters along. Any album that originally contained incredibly beautiful songs like "When You Get Right Down to It,' "Trying to Make a Foool of Me," and the all time classic of this genre "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time," the song that truly defines this era, you can't go wrong with these catchy hooks and beautiful harmonies! As long as CD's like this are available, lovers of GOOD, TRUE SOULFUL music have NOTHING to fear from modern mutations (mutilations?) of this genre.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Soulful Music!.......2006-02-28

Although their 1966 debut single 'He Don't Really Love You' dosen't appear in this CD, the overall songs compilation is really great! The recognizable high voice of William Hart remains so warm and soulful throughout the years, while it is worthmentioning that many artists (incuding Fugees and Prince) have paid tribute to the band through various renditions of their songs!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Soul.......2006-02-24

Between the Harmony of the Delfonics&the Greatness that is Thom Bell's Production&Arranging these songs are as magical now as when they first came out.this is a Great Collection.

5 out of 5 stars A must compilation.......2002-01-09

I regard this mid-priced compilation as one of the best sweet soul albums available on cd. A must compilation for everyone not yet familiar with Delfonics. In case you love soul music, you'll dig every single song on this album. No fillers only killers. Highly recommended.

The Delfonics have so many great songs, it's hard to put them all onto one cd. Until a box set is made, you'll have to buy them one at a time. Delfonic music is timeless! This cd is a good place to start. et

Nicholas Cage stars as an investment broker who wakes up to find his swinging singles lifestyle replaced with a wife, children, and a minivan. While the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" is the perfect complement, as it accurately reflects absurd displacement, this soundtrack is most notable for containing the atmospheric Seal single, "This Could Be Heaven," and new tracks from Elvis Costello, Edwin McCain, and soundtrack veteran Danny Elfman. Two romantic classics from Chris Isaak and U2 fill out the better song selections. The remainder is a weird jump-cut of eras and styles. The Delfonics' "La La Means I Love You" and Blue Magic's "Sideshow" represent the oldies portion. Morcheeba put psychedelic R&B on the map. Mr. Big makes the case for cheesy late-night TV offers with the ultimate karaoke bar favorite "To Be with You," while Luciano Pavarotti shifts things in an operatic direction. This soundtrack is a bit like hitting the scan button on your car radio and coming up with a little of everything. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars If you like Edwin McCain, WOW! David Foster produced this track........2006-10-22

This song is playing in the background as Nicholas Cage is stepping off the elevator. It is soooooo low in the film, it's hard to hear. WHAT were they thinkin'????? This song should have been one of the highlights of the entire thing!

Just try the sample clip here and you'll be sold! It has the David Foster "touch," much like the way the Whitney Houston songs. WOW! You won't believe how amazing it is to hear Edwin sing with this kind of backup! Don't miss it!

Love Nicholas Cage in this film, as well.

Enjoy!!!

Does anyone know what song plays when Jack is opening the box with his stuff that Kate gave back to him? It's near the end, before he goes to the airport to stop Kate from leaving... unfortunately it's not on the soundtrack...

5 out of 5 stars DANNY ELFMAN!!.......2003-12-04

THE BEST PIECES ON THIS SOUNDTRACK ARE DANNY ELFMANS SCORE! IT ROCKS! ITS BEAUTIFUL!

4 out of 5 stars I loved this movie.......2003-09-26

The Family Man was great!! I liked the movie because the characters reminded me so much of myself. My one complaint is that Nicholas Cage at times seemed lost in the script-- like his lines were running him rather than the other way around. At other times, He reminded me so much of Jimmy Stewart in his clueless, "how did I get here?" role.
One of the reasons I identified with this movie was the music. It is the sort of music you might listen to in your twenties and thirties and you get the feeling that you can still be hip and have fun as a parent (which I do.)
Tia Leoni was fabulous in her role as a mother/nonprofit lawyer. She's the kind of wife anyone could hope to have.
All in all, I think to enjoy the mix of music on this cd, you first need to see this great family film. You won't waste your time.

2 out of 5 stars Another Family Man Misfire!.......2002-09-22

Has somebody at the studio got it in for this film? The promotional campaign and packaging for the movie and the DVD release played up the broad comedy and sentiment and downplayed the tight script, the top-notch acting, and the depth and subtlety that mark this intelligent, profound and brutally honest film. The "soundtrack" whiffs, too. Is it a pop hits compilation? Fine -- then put in everything, and not just this selective and uneven mix. Is it the actual soundtrack, by Danny Elfman? Okay, then do THAT, and not just toss in two tantalizing glimpses. This CD should have been the latter, which is just breathtaking. So, we've got this odd brew, which doesn't do justice to the film or Elfman. Get the CD anyway, if only for the two lovely Elfman pieces. Then, hope and pray that someone in a postion to pull some levers at last gets smart about the music AND the movie, and begins the arduous process of ensuring that this lost gem of a film finally gets the recognition that it deserves.

    4 out of 5 stars Their best........2005-05-12

Although their artistic and creative peak was rather short, The Delfonics were and will always be remembered as one of the best "Sweet Soul" vocal groups ever. This excellent collection brings you most of their big hits at a decent price. Thom Bell's ever-gorgeous production coupled with The Delfonics' smooth and harmonious vocals made for some very sweet 1960s Philly soul.
