Kut Klose members LaVonn Battle, Athena Cage, and Tabitha Duncan have attractive voices, but they haven't come up with a distinctive group sound; they simply fill in around the lead vocals in the most predictable ways. It doesn't help matters that the album's 11 songs, largely written by Keith Sweat and his sidekicks, are undernourished melodically, giving the three women little to do but repeat the same sing-song rhythms over and over. If Surrender were simply boring, it could be easily dismissed. It's more insidious than that, however, for Sweat and his male cronies have used the three women of Kut Klose as vehicles for their own sexual fantasies. There's something smarmy about powerful industry figures who sign up young women desperate for stardom and who then direct those women to moan and croon about how they want a "Lovely Thang" who will "Lay My Body Down" and "Do Me" the way "I Like." Kut Klose's new album is nothing more than the Penthouse "Forum" set to formulaic slow jams. --Geoffrey Himes

Jane Monheit has a lovely voice, one that in its purest, most lilting form reminds you of the young Barbra Streisand, with the show-stopping qualities that suggests. Her haunting rendition of Sergio Mendes'"So Many Stars," the runaway highlight of Surrender, is also one of the best things she's ever done. (Mendes arranged and produced the track and plays keyboard on it.) Since she stopped trying so hard to be a jazz singer and found her mark as a popular vocalist specializing in Brazilian music (there are also guest turns by singer Ivan Lins and harmonica great Toots Thielemans), Monheit has sounded more at home with herself. The problem is, as delectable as her instrument is, her performances, more often than not, have a perplexing emptiness to them: they're like romantic settings with candles providing the requisite glow but no real warmth. She's only 29, which means she has plenty of time to deepen as an artist. But it could also be that what you hear now is what you're going to get in the future. --Lloyd Sachs

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL.......................2007-07-22

.....and I don't mean just the girl. Jane is certainly one of the most gorgeous girls around, but her voice is the true thing of beauty. She REALLY knows how to sing jazz. Really.

This wonderful album finds Jane branching a bit...several Latin numbers, but don't worry; she does them beautifully, while still giving us some of the standards that she has always done to absolute perfection. What would a jazz album be without Johnny Mercer?

Jane is a treasure...we have other great [and gorgeous] jazz singers [yes, I love Diana Krall, too], but Jane is a total joy...grab this, grab ALL her recordings, and prepare to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Monheit excels again.......2007-07-14

Admittingly, we are big Monheit fans and her latest album doesn't disappoint. We simply love most everything she does and she has become as consistently good as another of our favorites: Janis Siegel. The album was so good that I bought extra copies to give to friends.

1 out of 5 stars Jane Monheit Surrenders to Mediocrity.......2007-06-25

Jane Monheit, a once-promising talent, released "Surrender" in 2007. It is her weakest, most spiritless release to date. Her "Surrender" song interpretations are unremarkable, undemanding, and unconvincing. Her vocal stylizations distinctly lack variety and virtuosity. Most condemnable of all, her uninspiring delivery makes every lyrical sentiment of every song sound routine and insincere.

Her vocals are framed cheaply by "canned" instrumental (especially the string) arrangements that sound like some of the worst Muzak or "elevator music" ever recorded. Jane Monheit and crew are creating audio mannequins on "Surrender"--lifelike but bloodless songs that remind me of puddles of standing water on a city pavement at night, reflecting light, but flowing nowhere. And that's the once-potent Jane Monheit on vocals, lazily poking at the puddles with a twig. If "Never Never Land," her debut album, suggested a young vocalist on the rise, budding like a rose, "Surrender" features the same singer, clueless, compromising, and on her knees. "Surrender" indeed.

4 out of 5 stars I rather like it.......2007-06-17

One thing is for sure, everyone who thought that Norah Jones is a good singers should listen to this! Jane Monheit is a real singer and musician. Jones is merely a "wannabe".

I have listened to this album on and off at work for two weeks now and I find it, at best, quite touching and sensual, and, at worst, undemanding. I think one could use this album as background music. But if one turns up the volume we are presented with some very stylish interpretations of some standards. If I was in a piano bar and hearing this music, I would be very satisfied.

Jane Monheit has quite a powerful and expressive voice. Here basic timbre is very attractive and she has a good tessitura and she sounds unforced from the top to the bottom of her range. Id est: she can sing.

Her instrumental accompaniment is colourful enough and never overwhelms the voice. If I had any criticism of this album it would be that it is a trifle unadventurous - it is clear to me that Monheit is capable of doing many things in music.

I would enjoy listening to this album juxtaposed Gabriela Anders's album "Last Tango In Rio".

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant........2007-06-15

She may have started out as a jazz vocalist but these days Jane Monheit seems to have ditched any semblance of swing in favour of sickly string arrangements.

Her voice is lush and exquisite but she overdoes the breathiness - to the point that one wonders if a ventilator is required - and sticks too much to indistinguishable, slow bossa novas and ballads.
The result is a florid and bland album that washes over the listener.

My favourite tracks are : "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" and "So Many Stars".

4 out of 5 stars UNKLE - War Stories.......2007-08-01

After being monumentally disappointed by DJ Shadow's last release 'The Outsider', I must say that I am pleased with UNKLE's latest 'War Stories'. I am sad that this album isn't being plugged more. I randomly stumbled upon it at my local record store.

In college, I was a huge fan of DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, which lead me to UNKLE, due to Shadow's semi-involvement. Whereas Shadow went in a completely different direction on his last album, UNKLE/James Lavelle sticks to what got him here in the first place, which I have always liked.

I was giddy as soon as the fast-paced mashing of the drums kicked in pretty early on. The album has a really dark edge to it, hence the War Storiese name. The music, as always, is great. Lots of layers/textures; it's very impressive for an "electronica" act.

I did not expect so many vocals on the album though. When I initially opened up the booklet before listening, I saw Vocals on almost every track and though "Uh-oh, this might be a bad sign." But have no fear, the vocals are all very good and complement the music nicely. The vocals are almost used like another layer/texture in addition to the music.

A very solid album start-to-finish. It feels more like a big cohesive piece of music more than it does a collection of individual songs. If you're a fan of UNKLE's previous work, or a fan of DJ Shadow's pre-Outsider work, I recommend picking it up.

2 out of 5 stars Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.......2007-07-28

I can understand Lavelle's desire to travel a different road with Unkle on their third proper release, but this is so far removed from Unkle's two previous offerings that, as another reviewer said, it's surprising that he put this under the "Unkle" moniker. Instead of anything remotely exciting, what Lavelle has produced here is a run-of-the mill "rock" record with no memorable songs or any sort of originality. Utterly disappointing and utterly forgettable.

4 out of 5 stars You got the wrong guy...........2007-07-28

I love the song "Broken" but guys, that isn't Gavin Clark. It's Mark Hollis from Talk Talk. I'm convinced. I've always loved Talk Talk and that song is just awesome. If only Mark had sang more. I think the album is quite a departure from the other stuff I've heard by UNKLE. I like this direction.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5/5.......2007-07-27

jubster; u make no sense this sounds very unkle to me... 'price to pay' for example... the last track also...

listen to it more then review :D its a great unkle release... one of the best releases of 07 thus far...

4 out of 5 stars It's Unkle's rock album !.......2007-07-26

UNKLE return in emphatic fashion with third album, "War Stories".
Genre-hopping dance outfit Unkle's previous albums had atmosphere and ambition but were marred by dreary passages of electronic noodling.
Here, though, production duo James Lavelle and Richard File's decision to opt for a heavier rock sound pays dividends. Tighter and more epic than its predecessors, "War Stories" underpins commanding vocals from guests including Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and the Cult's Ian Astbury with crunching electric guitars.
Homme's turn on the depraved "Restless" is a highlight, but there are no duds to spoil the air of apocalyptic doom.
It's Unkle's rock album.
The merging of rock and DJ culture - always a tricky one to pull off - works seamlessly here, epitomised by the opening of "Hold My Hand", where a timeshifted sample leads smoothly into a thumping ZZ Top-style riff (although the guitars quickly become more Robert Fripp than Billy Gibbons).
Astbury's unusually restrained contributions take him into brooding Mark Lanegan territory, and are among the highlights of an impressive album on which Lavelle's work once again matches up to his reputation.

My highlights: "Burn My Shadow", "Restless" and "When Things Explode".

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

3 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Being from Philly, I was able to see them in concert at the Five Spot
(Black Lily) and was blown away by the two of them. Their music is welcoming, it's peaceful and soulful. I asked her to perform "Stars" for me and my husband. It was unbelievable. Every Tuesday their band would head to the stage and the rest is as they say history.

This husband and wife team is just awesome. The band and background singers are superb as well. One of my favorite cuts is "Stars", which is lush, sexy and just plain old beautiful. I would want my husband to feel that way about me!!! Ursual Rucker the diva griot does her thing and does it well on the cut "We", exhorting togetherness which is like the song says a beautiful thing. I even like the intro with Ryva and her british lilt! My favorite song is "I AM" which is so girl power and motivating. Go get this album because it is worth while.

Pretty good CD. There is no doubt of Chieli's guitar mastery, but other than a couple of good hooks I'll most likely push this one to the back of the rack after a few more plays.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-05-03

Chieli continues to impress me with his unique style! I was not sure if I would like this album as well as his last (Got It Goin On) but his work seems to just keep getting better. A very nice blend of new Chieli with his original band Special EFX. I love every song! A must have for any smooth jazz lover.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Surrender.......2007-04-14

Chieli Minucci is great as usual. He has a way with a guitar that is very satisfying to the mind. I try to get all his albums, especially the old Special EFX albums. those are unbelievably great

4 out of 5 stars Very pleasant and unusual music. .......2007-03-07

Led by Chieli Minucci and the late George Jinda, Special EFX became one of the seminal forces in the early days of Smooth Jazz,.
"Sweet Surrender" is now the fourth and latest project since Minucci resurrected the Special EFX banner a few years back. "Sweet Surrender" features Chieli Minucci alongside 'core' Special EFX band members saxophonist and flutist David Mann, drummer Lionel Cordew, vocalist and percussionist Philip Hamilton, pianist and keyboardist Jay Rowe and bassist Jerry Brooks, as well a few guest musicians.
The album showcases a fresh mix of irresistible grooves filled with funky memorable hooks, lyrical sweeping melodies, head-nodding polyrhythmic romps and dance inducing and body shaking rhythms. Highlights on the CD include "Mystical" the album's first single, sure to skyrocket to the top of the charts with its funky syncopated melody, surprising chord changes and infectious grooves and the tour-de-force "Au Naturale" which exposes Chieli's virtuoso guitar skills and keen compositional chops (Minucci wrote all the songs on the CD).
To sum it up: Minucci at his best and most creative since early Special EFX.
This well crafted album is an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional CD! Must-have CD to add to your Jazz collection........2007-03-01

I have had the opportunity to listen to Sweet Surrender multiple times to let it "sink in". Chieli's latest musical masterpiece has it all! Contemporary Smooth Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Fusion Jazz, Soul Jazz, Theatrical Jazz, and more! The thing that blows my mind about this CD is the vast ground of musical composition this CD covers. What ultimately brings Sweet Surrender together is not just Chieli Minucci's talent, but the talent from all artists who contributed to Sweet Surrender: Jerry Brooks, Lionel Cordew, Jay Rowe, Philip Hamilton, David Mann, Will Brock, Dave Anderson, Wayne Batchelor, and others. I noticed a slight deviation of what in my mind I believe to be Chieli Minucci Music, this being a very positive deviation. Chieli has molded some new twists, sounds, and beats into this CD and has left a brand new impression on me. I believe Chieli has captured my Sweet Surrender with this release. Way to go Chieli & Special EFX!! Superb!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Surrender kicks off with a nervous, vibrating whine that brings to mind the first three seconds of Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." But it's just a tease; on their third album, techno's Chemical Brothers have all but turned their back on the rock muscle that earned 1997's Dig Your Own Hole gold status in the U.S. Oh, there are guest rock vocalists galore--New Order's Bernard Sumner, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, and Oasis's Noel Gallagher--but only the latter brings out the crunching big beats that the Chems all but invented. The rest of Surrender hews closer to the thinner, synthesized textures of the electro revival that's swept the dance-music world. Much of the time that's just swell. The leadoff track, "Music: Response," is a seamless trip back to 1985, complete with vocoderized singing and Morse-code beeps. And Sumner's "Out of Control" replicates the thrill of hearing the gloomy Joy Division morph into a swell synthpop band. But without the propulsion that their trademark aggression usually provides, the Chems just barely come up with enough ideas to carry the listener all the way through an album, much less rock a dance floor for an hour at a time. --Jeff Salamon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A successful change of pace.......2006-08-29

I actually rate this as a 4-and-a-bit star album but rounded it up to 5 to redress the generally average reviews it's received over the years. While I enjoy reading the music press, sometimes they get it plain wrong; such, I feel, is the case with 'Surrender'. Many reviews have unfavourably compared it with the Chems' previous album 'Dig Your Own Hole', claiming 'Surrender' to be a flat and/or repetitive follow-up. In my opinion nothing could be further from the truth.

'Dig Your Own Hole' sits at the hard-edged pioneering end of big beat, relying on riff and huge rhythm to drive the tracks home; it's a fine album if that is what you are seeking. 'Surrender' is a TOTALLY different beast; it's more of a house/chill album and a far more painterly affair than its generally monchromatic predecessor.

On 'Surrender', the Chems focus more on sonic adventure and melodic texture than on big beat. This lends it a greater variety of atmosphere, and whilst it is not uniformly excellent and does run slightly out of puff towards the end it is still a rich and rewarding listen, with a greater variety of styles than any of their other releases. Consider the singles culled from it - 'Music:Response', 'Out Of Control', 'Let Forever Be' and 'Hey Boy Hey Girl'; add memorable tracks such as 'Influence', 'Got Glint' and my all-time favourite Chems track 'The Sunshine Underground' and you've got an album for many moods and occasions, more so than on any of their other releases, fine though they are. Sure, it has some lesser tracks but they help rather than hinder; I can play it before I go out or after I come home, or Tuesday night, Sunday afternoon, whenever. It sits at the poppier end of electronica, and is definitely recommended for those who like an album to take them somewhere and are happy to enjoy the ride.

3 out of 5 stars Liking something because it fits your genre is limiting your brain........2005-07-29

So if hip hop is your thing do you like bad hip hop? Or trance? or anything?

Using your brain is much better. Find the BEST IN ANY GENRE and it will be interesting. Metal, punk, jazz even C&W. Much better than the worst of your chosen genre.

Now about this recording. I have thousands of CDs. Most of the trance or hip hop goes into the oval file if you ask me. Most of it is hardly worth listening too it's all so similar.

3.5 stars. Good. Nice to listen to. Not ground shaking but I have to say these guys are into sound - not the stupid rules of the genre. That's what makes this interesting. Instead of a weak copy of other peoples music I can tell these guys are really into listening and doing something different. Pretty rare in this genre area. So buy if you are adventurous. Avoid if you're mind is in a genre tunnel.

And if you are wondering where this music came from all the better. Progenitors are always better than followers. Find the progenitors music and it will be rougher but more interesting. I'll take creativity and adventure over polish any day. These guys had something to do with inventing this music but they've moved on to other areas because they have searching minds: Klaus Schulze, Psycik TV, Eno, Terry Riley, Le Monte Young, Steve Reich, Jon Hassell, Kluster, Ashra Temple.

5 out of 5 stars My First Chemical Brothers Album.......2005-06-04

I just bought this one out of curiosity - I'd heard a lot of positive publicity , plus the sample of 'Block Rockin' Beats'. The songs reflect the use of varied beats, which is why they're called 'The Beatmasters'. My favourite was 'Got Glint?'. Haven't heard another song like it till date. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Chemical Brothers Best Album! Vastly underrated........2005-05-09

I don't understand why this album gets panned by critics and fans of the Chemical Brothers. In my opinion this is their best CD. So many styles of music were explored here with many having their roots in other genres (shoegaze, house, acid, trance). Overall this is a much more varied album than both Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole combined. I was tired of those two albums years and years ago but this one still gets played by me amazingly often.

Favorite tracks: Asleep From Day, The Sunshine Underground, Racing The Tide, Dream On

4 out of 5 stars Unjustly Underated Album by the Chems.......2005-01-11

Okay, Exit Planet Dust is hands down the best from this Big Beat duo, but that this album has been bashed in comparison to its predecessor (Dig Your Own Hole) is unfair. Unlike eevryone else, I think the album is far more interesting than Hole because none of the songs sound alike. If you like techno, Under the Influence is perfect; if you want chill, Sunshine Underneath and Asleep from Day deliver. Plus, Hey Boy, Hey Girl has to be the best dance song ever. Due to song number 4 being a bore, I can't give this album 5 stars. However, don't believe all the hype - this album is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Surrender to Sarah Brightman!!! :).......2006-08-20

This CD is simply amazing! I prefer this album over "Dive" because Brightman sticks to what she knows best - which is opera! Surrender, Unexpected Song, Chanson D'efance, Tell Me on a Sunday, and Nothing Like You've Ever Known are simply brilliant and beautiful pieces music! Sadly, I do not prefer the 2 songs from Cats - about Macavaty and Gus. They really do not seem to fit to Brightman's style of music, for they are more outgoing! However, Memory from Cats (in Italian) is beautiful with soaring octaves! Everything's Alright is genius, with a 5/4 tempo, and it makes the song amazing. Pie Jesu is a beautiful piece, but I prefer Charlotte Church singing it. Brightman's vocals show to much vibrato, and it makes the song seem annoying! Amigos Para Siempre and the Spanish version of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" are fairly decent pieces from Brightman. If you love the Brightman from "The Phantom of the Opera", then buy this album!!!

1 out of 5 stars surrender.......2006-01-11

The first couple of songs were fair the next few were crap and the next were hogwash and the last showed how a beautiful voice could crumble with lousy songs chosen for her Terrible ablum especially for 30.00 really terrible

5 out of 5 stars Surrender to Sarah's Unexpected Songs!!.......2004-06-03

I surrendered ..... you should too!

This album is just incredible. As I'm sure you already know, this is a collection of Sarah singing the works of brilliant composer (and ex-husband) Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Sarah just takes my breath away. Her technique is incredible and her voice is perfect- which I unfortunately can't say for all of her albums. Her Spanish pronunciation is nothing short of amazing on one of the album's highlights, 'No Llores por Mi Argentina', 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina' from 'Evita' in Spanish. Another incredible highlight is 'Piano', 'Memory' from 'Cats' in Italian. Sarah really throws herself into it and it comes out sounding almost like an operatic aria. If you're looking for her famous 'Music of the Night' that's here too, as well as a brand new version of 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again', which definitely improves on the already fantastic version that's on the 'Phantom of the Opera' cast recording. 'Macavity: The Mystery Cat' from 'Cats' shows off a whole new side to Sarah's voice. When I first heard it I was amazed! I couldn't believe that it was Sarah singing it. Other amazing highlights (for me at least) are 'Unexpected Song' from 'Song and Dance', 'Tell Me On a Sunday' from the musical of the same name, and 'The Last Man in my Life' from 'Song and Dance'.

The album includes fantastic liner notes explaining each song and the musical that it's from, courtesy of Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, and some really cool behind the scenes pictures. I strongly urge you to buy this album even if you already own the 'Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection'. I don't own that album myself, but from what I understand, it's basically a repackaging of this with a few song changes and different pictures. I'll probably buy it to get the songs that I don't have one of these days .....

I adore this album. All Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and musical theater fans in general need this. In my opinion it's one of Sarah's 3 best works, (the other two being 'La Luna' and 'Time to Say Goodbye'.) Of course, with Sarah's huge and varied discography, your opinion is bound to differ from mine but I'm saying mine anyway.

This album is one of my top favorites of all time. It's worth every penny. Buy it- you won't regret it.

Too bad this group supported by Keith Sweat didn't go any further. I bought it for one song, but the whole CD is great for listening. Lyrics contain songs about love and such, and I like they way speak about it. It gives you something to look forward to.

3 out of 5 stars Buy this CD just for the single "I Like".......2006-02-09

I'm listening to it now at work and it feels just like it did my senior year of high school when this album dropped. Incidentally, Tabitha Duncan went to my high school ... but a few years before me (I'm not that old).

At any rate, I actually kinda miss that 1990s R&B sound ... smooth, cool, slow, laid back slow jams. "I Like" will take you back or catch you up if you a new jack not up on what's a dying breed of old school R&B soul.

Classic, classic track, indistinctive album by a group that jumped on the bandwagon after En Vogue and TLC blew up.

Kut Klose is one of those her today gone tomorrow artists. Yes they had a hit single "I Like" but the bad thing about it is that the song itself is very typical cookie cutter music and doesnt hold up as being remembered. I think Keith Sweat produced their album and most of the material here sound like his leftovers he gave to them. This group is nothing special vocally or lyrically. They have absolutely nothing to fall back on besides Keith Sweat who produced a bunch of average songs for them talking about the samething. There were so many 1 hit wonders around this time. All these record labels kept pushing out all these average singers that didnt standout from anyone else. Kut Klose vanished faster then they came and nobody cares.

It's been more than a decade since Ottmar Liebert came on the national music scene with his debut album, Nouveau Flamenco. The German-born guitarist brought a hybrid approach to this passionate Spanish guitar style that made it more atmospheric and brought him one of the largest audiences for an instrumentalist. Each succeeding album has been a deeper exploration of this approach, expanding it into orchestral and ambient terrain. You can hear the guitarist stretching beyond convention on tracks like "Waiting 4 Stars 2 Fall," creating a more cinematic expanse with synthesizer pads and conga drums or doubling up guitars on "Shepherd's Nite Watch." Surrender 2 Love is yet another culling of music from his early years with the Higher Octave label, and like most second "Best of" collections, it is, indeed, second-best. After all, he only recorded three albums for the label in the first place. But Surrender 2 Love is far from being Liebert's dregs, and even on a second pass, he stands six strings above most nouveau flamenco pretenders. --John Diliberto

What a wonderful and diverse CD. Sit in front of a fire on a rainy day with a nice glass of Oregon Pinot Noir in your hand. Close your eyes relax and let the sounds of Liebert surround you. His talent is evident in the expressions as he's playing. The guitar seems an extension of his own form, not a separate instrument.

When you think of all the guitarist...past & present...this name should be in the top five ~ Ottmar Liebert...think six strings, tender touch and a style that has captured the world.

Liebert takes the moment, time seems to stand still with each track on this album...it's difficult to select one over the other, because they are not the same in substance, counter-balance or texture...his ability to take a melody, weave a fine tapestry...is what sets him above the rest.
