Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Heavenly Voice.......2007-07-31

I had never heard of Josh Groban until one night I was looking at the
PBS series, "Distant Shores" with Peter Davison and this backgroun music came up. I had to search for the voice and the composer. It took me awhile to find Josh Groban. I am very old(veery!), studied music for years and he has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
From such a young man it seems unbelievable. He reminds me of beautiful voices of yesteryear- a pleasure to remember.

On paper, the teaming of Latin-jazz veteran Poncho Sanchez with Stax legends Eddie Floyd, Booker T. Jones, and Steve Cropper on two Floyd classics may have looked like a nifty way to expand Sanchez's audience while promoting Concord's re-launch of the Stax and Volt labels. But the cover versions of "Knock on Wood" and the title track are little more than agreeable (Sanchez handles lead vocals, with Floyd in support). And if you're looking for a lively remake of the Motown classic "Shotgun," you're better off with jazz upstart Don Byron's recent version than the one here featuring onetimes James Brown saxist Maceo Parker. The rest of the album mainly sticks to the pop-influenced sound in which the conga-playing Sanchez has long specialized--a sound that in combining airy melodies and arrangements and tight grooves reflects both his California roots and his debt to New York greats including onetime labelmate Tito Puente. A solid guest vocal by salsa and salsatron star Andy Montanez might have been even better had he recorded with the band rather than back home in Puerto Rico. --Lloyd Sachs

I recently heard Poncho Sanchez live for the first time and was immediately in love with his music. I had to buy the CD after hearing Poncho's great arrangements of soul classics "Shotgun", "Raise Your Hand" and "Knock on Wood". Including Booker T. & the MGs on several of the album cuts was a great bonus. The rest of the album contains smokin' Latin jazz arrangements with a great rhythm section and tight horn arrangements.

After four decades toiling in the record business with little more than a fervent cult following to show for it, Bettye LaVette can seem like soul music's equivalent of Roy Hobbs, protagonist of the bittersweet baseball fable The Natural. Whether this riveting collection of ten covers by an eclectic range of contemporary female singer/songwriters will change the husky-throated Detroit native's fortunes seems irrelevant: Its spare, dusky groove and intensely emotional, in-the-moment performances seem utterly disconnected from concerns as trivial as fame and fashion. A forceful, timely reminder that soul thrives on the singer and not the song, LaVette doesn't so much cover these songs as reinvent them from the inside out, be it the chilling, a capella read of Sinead O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" that opens the album, a gritty take of Lucinda Williams' "Joy" where the singer burns with a fire that might make Tina Turner envious or her recasting Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow" as bluesy omen and "How Am I Different" by Aimee Mann as inviting, r&b shuffle. In a musical era where soulful authenticity and emotional resonance are too often virtual, this album is a delicious dose of the Real Deal. -- Jerry McCulley

Album Description

With one eye on the intimate concept albums Sinatra invented at mid-'50s Capitol, and the other on the gritty yet sophisticated soul records produced at Atlantic in the '60s, this release offers ten songs that tell the story of Bettye LaVette. Recording stints at Motown, Atlantic, Epic, and a host of smaller labels left her with dreams to burn, and she pours every moment of hope and heartbreak from her 44 years in music into her tough-minded new collection. Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices. For every moment of fear and loss, there's an answering moment of triumph and defiance. The songs are from such artists as Sinead O'Connor, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, Rosanne Cash, Dolly Parton, Aimee Mann, and more.

I heard a couple of samples of Betty LaVette on a website. I really enjoed what I heard so I bought the album.
It was good investment, the album is great, it takes a bit of listening to, and you need to take time out to listen to it, it is not background music. Enjoy

1 out of 5 stars Betty Lavette.......2006-07-04

I had not heard her before, only read about her. I discovered I don't really like her! Just don't like the style

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-06-30

This CD was one that Amazon prompted me to consider based on the "people like you bought this" technology. And lo and behold, they were spot on! I like to play this CD while working out--nothing like "Joy" or "Why am I Different" to get the blood going. Yes, these songs are "he done me wrong" songs but so what? This is what women talk (and evidently, sing) about.

There are only two songs on the album that I would say are 4 stars as opposed to 5--the opening song by Sinead O'Conner and the closing song by Fiona Apple. It's not that these are bad songs just that Bettye LaVette's interpretation of them was not quite what I was expecting. But that's me...others here seem to like them quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD but Amazon's Product Review is PC lame!.......2006-05-16

Let's get the quick negative out of the way first. In Amazon's Product Description, the anonymous writer opines, "Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices." Really? Were you told to say that at the last NOW meeting? Why is male-bashing a part of a "product description"? Shame on Amazon for allowing Political Correctness to run amok.

Now, on to the CD.

If you grew up listening to music in any large, gritty, urban area, you can't avoid music like this - nor would you want to. Motown and Stax are the foundation for the pure soul unearthed in this music. It'll grab you, twirl you around, and make you dizzy with delight. Hypnotic in every way, from the vocals to the arrangements, it's bound to spend months non-stop in your CD player. It's music you can introduce to your friends and they'll thank you a thousand times over.

Put it on, clear your calander, and enjoy the ride. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Sheila Walsh: Good all around CD.......2007-02-19

I live to hear Sheila Walsh. She has an excellent voice, but on this CD, she sounds a little thin. The songs she has chosen are a really grand, and her voice is too thin to cover the range. I really like ' You raise me up' but Josh Groban's voice ( HE sings this song too>) sounds better.
This is a thought provoking CD with a lot of great songs. I wish Sheila would choose songs that make her voice sound good and not just good songs.
All in all it is a good all around CD to listen to when you are resting, and when you are in a contemplative mood.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2007-01-04

I have heard Sheila Walsh speak and perform at two separate Women of Faith conferences. She is truly an inspiration. This is a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Touches My Heart.......2006-03-13

I love this CD. The opening song, "You Raise Me Up," brings tears to my eyes because it speaks to our need for God in the difficult places and times. All great music, and I'm glad I purchased this CD to add to my permanent music collection.

3 out of 5 stars As a fan of Sheila Walsh, I'm a little disappointed with this release.......2005-08-19

As a fan of Sheila Walsh, I'm a little disappointed with this release. Don't get me wrong. It's a decent recording but not great.

The entire recording consists of popular inspirational and praise and worship songs and one hymn medley ("My Faith Looks Up To Thee/Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty"). The problem is that the songs are not that distinct.

A couple of notable exceptions are the Twila Paris song "God Is In Control," which has lyrics that are especially relevant for today, and "Amazed." Jerry McPherson adds tasteful guitar licks on the first song, as he does throughout the recording, and pedal steel guitar, which is also part of the mix, doesn't sound any better than on "Amazed." Sheila really makes these songs her own and gets great backing vocals.

Unfortunately many of the other songs are just good versions of the originals. If you already have them, there's not a strong reason to buy this record.

Not too long ago I read that part of one person's wish-list was a longing for the old Sheila Walsh. While I might wish for the same with some qualifications-I have no desire for the spiked hair, rock days-I would like to see her do more along the lines of the delightful British-pop on "Again and Again (You Are)," heard on Love Falls Down. That recording along with Hope and Blue Waters are better choices if you want to experience Sheila Walsh at her best.

It's also a little misleading that this is advertised on the back cover as having "captivating Celtic melodies reflecting the Scottish homeland of her childhood." The only obvious Celtic sound is heard on the title song "You Raise Me Up." Hope and Blue Waters are much more Celtic.

There's no denying that Sheila Walsh has a powerful testimony and is incredibly talented. She speaks and sings at Women of Faith Conferences, writes books, is the former co-host of the 700 Club, and knows how to connect with people.

She is able to do that because she has a tender heart, which comes through in her music. "You Raise Me Up" is a good collection of songs, and it probably does reflect her feelings to some degree, but it falls short because it's mostly familiar.

Sometimes I think the modern trend of praise and worship music has stifled creativity. Many of the songs are simple and repetitive. There's not as much depth musically and lyrically. It seems that for some time now, the same songs keep getting repackaged. At the very least, I would like to see mostly new songs on praise and worship recordings. I appreciate artists like Chris Tomlin, Hillsong and others who labor toward that end.

I guess I too would like to see a little of the old Sheila Walsh. One of her older recordings had a great song called, "Angels With Dirty Faces." It had thoughtful and compelling words and music. We could use more articulate and captivating expressions of faith. Songs dealing with more complex music and themes are just as valid as "praise and worship" and can also connect people with God.

Sheila Walsh has been through a lot and come out the other side. I hope that in the future her songs will reflect a little more of what she is seeing at a given point in time. I would like to see a batch of new songs like "Again And Again," and "Angels With Dirty Faces." I could go for a recording like that.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-05-07

I just recently saw Sheila Walsh speak and sing in Columbus on the Women of Faith conference tour--she was awesome! I bought this cd today and I have been listening to it nonstop the whole time. This is not the type of music I would normally listen to but she has such a beautiful, inspirational voice. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to be inspired and engage in some awesome worship.

Amazon.com essential recording

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21

Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-10-31

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

5 out of 5 stars Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2005-08-29

This CD is just as great as the more recent "Ronan" CD. I clicked on 3 stars in error. This is a 5++ star album! His voice is sheer perfection, and the songs are wonderful. I also highly recommend the DVD of "The Impossible Dream," even though I didn't care at all for the London Community Choir who sing four songs. Note: The American version of the DVD doesn't have the 25-minute "Dr. Courageous" extra on it that the Irish version does. I saw him in concert last month, and besides having a voice that soars to the rafters, he is warm, funny and endearing.

4 out of 5 stars Music like this could make me a convert.......2005-08-17

I've always been a rock and roll fan since back in the 60's. Listening to this cd could easily convert me into a classical music fan as well. Wow what a voice.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2003-01-22

Having seen Ronan in person recently in the U.S., I was impressed first and foremost by his singing ability, and second by his stage presence and warmth. He is a special performer and human being. I am proud to be a Ronan Tynan fan.

4 out of 5 stars Tenor terrific.......2003-01-18

I am not a fan of this kind of music, but I bought this after hearing a few sound snippets at amazon and WoW! what a find. Excellent song selection, powerful singing, fine music quality for a live recording. Expand your horizons and enjoy. (get this wayno)

ronan tynan is a great role model for adults and children alike. he was born with a deformity and made a decision he would make something of himself, he had a goal and he surpassed it. no one puts as much of their heart into as he. he puts the audience into his songs, he makes us feel he is singing to each one of us individually. HE IS THE GREATEST IRISH TENOR I HAVE EVER HEARD, INCLUDING JOHN MC CORMAC the great irish tenor of the 30's

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Ahh,,,Alice, you gotta love him.......2007-06-22

As lyrically childish as we'd expect of Alice Cooper and as brazenly in your face as we'd hope him to be. Great band!!! Get this just to hear Kane Roberts tear it up on guitar. Wow!

3 out of 5 stars Worth Owning For The Last 3 Songs.......2006-12-15

Cooper continues down the 80's hair metal path with Kane Roberts and Kip Winger as his cohorts. To me this is a step down from "Constrictor" and 2/3rds of the album is very average anathematic hair metal. There are a few reasons to own the album however. The opening track "Freedom" was Alice's answer to Tipper Gore's PMRC. It is a bit on the corny rah rah side, but not a bad song. "Prince Of Darkness" is from the movie of the same name in which Cooper had a small acting role. The really good stuff on this album though is the last 3 songs which run together as a trilogy. "Chop Chop Chop", "Gail" and "Roses On White Lace" return to Cooper's horror music roots. I have heard that this is supposed to be about Jack The Ripper which would fit the lyrics. Either way it is a fine group of tunes and ends the album on a high note. The rest of the album does not do a lot for me, but if you are a fan of 80's metal anthems with fist pumping choruses this album might be for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Cooper Classic.......2006-07-29

The 1970's were obviously the peak time for Alice Cooper with such classics as Love It To Death, Killer, and Welcome to Nightmare. However, radio changed and began to play less of Cooper's new music leading people to think he was a has been or that anything after Goes to Hell lacked the same quality as the early work. Obviously that was untrue because Alice has made several great albums since (especially in recent years)

Even for those that will now admit 1994's The Last Temptation or 2000's Brutal Planet ranks right up there with his best material, seem to frown on a lot of his 80's work. Granted the material was not as consistent and there were a couple of clunkers such as Zipper Catches Skin. However, Alice made two truly memorable if overlooked albums in the 80's that are essential to your collection. They are DADA and the album I am reviewing Raise Your Fist and Yell.

After a hiatus, Alice returned in 1986 with a fair, but not spectactular 80's metal sounding album called Constrictor. However, he won some of his fans back with his still awesome live show. The following year Alice realized his career was back on the rise and decided to follow up with a slightly heavier, scarier album called Raise Your Fist and Yell. While the title of the album, I will admit is slightly cheesy, the songs on this album are simply amazing.

This is a bloody record even by Alice standards but check out the stellar music on this album. "Freedom" should have been a big hit for Alice and such tracks as his Jack the Ripper trilogy are incredible. In other words, this contains the scary sound old school Alice fans had been looking for for years but is also very 80's sounding. Any fan of the 80's that liked a slightly polished but heavier than say Bon Jovi type of album needs to own this. It blows anything that the other shock rockers did in this decade and that includes WASP (who had a great debut album) and underrated Lizzy Borden.

Take a shot on this one and you will regret having overlooked it in the 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing........2006-07-23

This is one of Alice Coopers most highly underated albums, and thats a shame really because it has amazing hits all through the cd. It has the opening song Freedom which is amazing, Lock me Up which is another good song equal to freedom, Give the Radio back, an interesting track, Step on you a track about just being mad, Not that kind of Love, a rather humorous with Alice's bad boy touch added to it, the Religious song Prince of Darkness with an amazing guitar solo, Time to Kill, and a 3 story song about Alice being Jack the Ripper.

The inside of the album has good album art, and lyrics. This album has amazing guitar solos all the way through it.... But don't buy this one on your own buy Constrictor with it, it has the same style songs, and costs just as much, and all together it's not even 20 bucks, so you get 2 rare cd's with amazing songs, for a price equal to 1 regular cd.

5 out of 5 stars Best Alice Cooper Album Ever Bar None.......2005-10-09

In my opinion this is by far the best Alice Cooper album ever bar none, even if you are not a fan of this album you still have to admit it's the best musicly. Kane Robert's is an amazing guitar player who is extremely underated too.

Alot of fans will say their favorate Alice album's are the older clasics because thats what got his name out there in the first place and had alot of the hits, some realy love the early 80's stuff (also known by some as the weird years) but I still think this one is the best. I love the lyrics especialy in The Gail Trilogy of Chop,Chop,Chop, Gail and of course my favorate Roses On White Lace. I mean how can you go wrong with lyrics like "

THEY'RE NEVER GONNA FIND YOUR FACE
IT'S HIDDEN AWAY
I FOUND A VERY SPECIAL PLACE WHERE YOU USED TO PLAY "

I think Alice's voice and the Alice charactor in general have always been at it's best when he is doing heavy stuff or slow and creppy stuff. Thats probably why my two favorate Alice albums are Raise Your Fist And Yell and Welcome To My Nightmare.

There's no arguing with the power of Sissel's voice. The Norwegian soprano brought James Horner's Titanic to life and blew people away at the Lillehammer Olympics' opening ceremony. Positioned as a classical crossover performer, Sissel's talent and versatility gets her into trouble. The 12-song My Heart bounces back and forth from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Franz Schubert, from Astor Piazolla to Ennio Morricone. These different composers are reconciled into one album by her talent. She's less successful with a so-so version "Ave Maria," but does better with Puccini's tear-jerker aria "O Mio Babbino Caro." Things go aesthetically awry when the singer (who has recorded folk music in the past) dives into folk-pop with "Angel Eyes" and then spin completely out of control on Richard Marx's "Someone Like You," which is a jarring stab at light R&B. Seemingly formulated by marketing team, My Heart may succeed at getting radio airplay in different formats, but it's an album that loses its way at times. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars MY HEART SISSEL.......2007-03-19

Sissel shows her versatilty and is an excellent CD with an excellent voice.Best I've heard in years

4 out of 5 stars SHE'LL TAKE YOUR HEART.......2007-02-24

Once again, Sissel's crystal-clear, bell-like voice is complemented with beautiful songs & lush orchestrations. Among standouts: "Mon coeur s'ouvre a la voix," "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Deborah's Theme." Sissel also does a beautiful job with "Pie Jesu," although I would have liked to have heard it as a duet. Even though there is not quite as diverse a repertoire as "Into Paradise" - which better showcases her voice (hence, the 4-star rating) - the album as a whole is wonderful and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Sub par for 'Goddess of Song'.......2007-02-07

The first Sissel CD I bought was "Into Paradise" where her astounding, sonorous tones are allowed full breadth of expression. This album, however, I was slightly disappionted in. The song selection does not appeal to me as well or emphasize her voice as fully. Still, as a record it is very lovely. It depends on what you expect...

5 out of 5 stars Norwegian soprano.......2007-01-17

I love Sissel's voice. The range, depth and quality of her voice enhanses every song she sings. She expresses so much of what Norwegian culture and tradition mean.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice.......2007-01-04

I recently discovered Sissel via her CD, Into Paradise. I particularly like the compositions which allow Sissel to demonstrate her range. The songs Pie Jesu and Ave Maria being two good examples. There are some performances on this CD which edge easily into what might be called contemporary or popular music. This woman simply has a beautiful voice and is a pleasure to listen to.
