Off the Wall made music history. Not only was it the release that signaled the arrival of Michael Jackson as a major talent outside the Jackson Five, it was the first record by a solo artist to contain four Top 10 hits. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," "Off the Wall," and "She's out of My Life" were essential listening in the late '70s and early '80s. The release also contains the kinetic "Working Day and Night" and "Burn This Disco Out." Paul McCartney contributes "Girlfriend." Thanks to Quincy Jones's production, it was still all about the music back then. The artistry Jackson exhibited on Off the Wall still amazes. Avoiding the shallow excesses of most of the period's disco, Jackson's dance rhythms here are made all the more powerful by Jackson's vocal restraint. --Steve Gdula

Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do.
Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend," Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This special edition features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews of producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. --Rickey Wright

Before Billy Jean, Bubbles And All Of His Troubles.......2007-07-24
My sister played me this cassette to listen to back in the summer of 1980. By this time, the fourth hit had already been released and was getting much airplay. As I remember it, the summer of 1979 was when I first heard "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". Then in the fall "Rock With You" was released. Later in mid winter 1980 (after New Years) came the song "Off The Wall". And last came "She's Out Of My Life" sometime during the spring of 1980. So, knowing I already liked 4 of the songs, I was glad to hear it. It is also quite interesting to think that my older sister knew me so well. She had played the Jackson 5 song ABC for me by turning up the radio when I was a young kid while also explaining to me who the Jackson 5 were. She got me asking for 45s (or singles) by the Jackson 5 and she knew what to get me for Christmas too... She bought me my very first cassette which was Jackson 5s Greatest Hits. She was so perceptive once again to play me this solo album by Michael Jackson as well. She came over to visit while I was off of school for the summer and played all of the songs and told me all of the stories behind all of the songs as she played them. Michael was apparently thinking about a girl he loved when he cried at the end of "She's Out Of My Life". Was it Tatum? Or Brook? Can't seem to remember that part clear enough. But she demonstrated how great an album it was song for song. She talked about how Michael Jackson wrote the first song and that the word "force" was contained in the lyrics and not "fun" as I had mistakenly assumed. she also pointed out that Michael Jackson wrote the song "Working Day And Night". I was then informed that Rod Temperton who wrote the 3 songs "Rock With You", "Off The Wall" and "Burn This Disco Out" had been a member of the band "Heatwave" and was their chief songwriter. She mentioned the Brothers Johnson who had a hit a few years earlier with Strawberry Letter 23, had written a song entitled: "Get On The Floor" which was included on 'Off The Wall'. A David Foster composition and collaboration was mentioned known as "It's the falling in Love". She talked about the song "I Can't Help it" written by Stevie Wonder found only on this album. She also talked about the song entitled: "Girlfriend" written by Paul McCartney. She demontrated the uniqueness of it all by singing along with Michael's adlibs. Later, after she left, I started to miss it so I went out and bought the digitally remastered half speed master version of the L.P. and then I listened to this album so much the belt on my turntable had to be replaced. Now I have this remastered CD and hopefully it will never wear out. This album/CD along with every song is great from start to finish. If you aren't sure what I'm telling you is true then take it from the album's producer Quincy Jones. He said that he likes it better than even "Thriller".
Special Edition Problems in the Remastering (Treble Boost).......2007-06-26
Why am I giving this Michael Jackson masterpiece only two stars? I have a serious issue with the remastering -- it's way too bright on my high-end (and otherwise very flat with no tone controls) stereo system. Who the heck maintained the boosted treble? I'm sure this would sound great equalized on an AM radio station, but it's hurting my ears. The sound quality of the original album is remarkably crisp...stinging, in fact.
So, this is just a warning for those expecting the remastering to have corrected the riding-the-treble-gain problem. I recommend those without the usual treble/bass tone controls who still have their hearing avoid this particular release.
nostalgic.......2007-05-14
Forgot just how good Michael Jackson used to be....this is a favorite blast to the past. Good songs to sing and dance to....makes you smile.
BACK IN THE DAY.......2007-05-14
THIS IS A FUN CD, THAT IN IT'S TIME WAS AND IS SO MUCH FUN TO LISTEN TO. THIS WAS THE MICHAEL JACKSON THAT WAS TALENTED AND HAD SO MUCH TO OFFER. IT IS A GREAT CD.
Jackson's Legacy.......2007-05-02
Long after talk of Michael Jackson's nose, skin colour, Bubbles, etc. this is what he will be remembered for! It puts all todays RnB and Pop to shame. It's as raw, funky and fresh as it was in 1979! One of the greatest and creative albums Ive ever heard, the problem is people seem to skip it and listen to his more successful albums but trust me I have them all this is by far the best! The opening track sets the tone for the album and ITS OFF THE HOOK! I cant say anymore listen and you'll wonder why him and Quincy Jones dont get back together and make people feel Pop music again!!! (ps. Michael plays with milk bottles on the first track he just has born rythme!) GENIUS ALBUM

the neptunes and timbaland have always tried to recreate the melodically rhythmic percussion of don't stop till you get enough and working day and night, you hear it all over today's r&b and hip hop with artists like omarion, pharell, justin timberlake, beyonce etc. Also, the melodic smoothness in the slower songs is what inspired those like ne yo, usher, mary j. blige and the list goes on

Life ain't so bad at all...if you're living Off The Wall!.......2006-11-25
Michael Jackson's 1979 solo debut Off The Wall stands today as Michael Jackson at his rawest and most sincere.
Long before the scandals, the nose jobs, and the court appearances, Michael Jackson was the youngest member of the beloved Jackson 5, later known as the Jacksons. In the late 70's, Michael was no longer a little boy, he was a young man who, in a few years, became the biggest selling solo artist and the most exciting live act since The Beatles. He teamed up with producer Quincy Jones, and the result was a collaboration that spawned 3 classic albums within 8 years: Off The Wall, the record breaking Thriller, and Bad.
Off The Wall captures Jackson right before the madness kicked in, and it is quite a moment to cherish. The 10-track album features some of Michael's greatest classics: the US number 1 hits Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, and the groovy Rock With You, the sweet ballad She's Out Of My Life (a song so sincere that MJ actually cries at the end), the upbeat Working Day And Night, the Paul McCartney penned Girlfriend, and, one of my personal favorites, the charming title track Off The Wall.
Many people regard Thriller, the 1982 follow up, as Michael's greatest achievement. Thriller was so successful that it overshadowed the Grammy winning debut. Whatever the case may be, Off The Wall is definitely Michael's prized contribution to music, an album so sweet and so modest, Michael ought to take lessons from it for his future release.

His best Album.......2006-10-14
This 1979 release, IMO is his best solo release, and sounds timeless. Forget the hype surrounding the man; this is Michael at his best. Subsequent releases (particularly Thriller) would go on to cement his name in musical history (and IMO cause him to try and chase the record sales on future releases) I wish Mike would go back to this winning formula. Take one excellent producer (Quincy Jones) a backing group of top rate musicians (Paulino Da Costa, for example on Percussion) and live instruments, with great songs (by Michael himself, Stevie Wonder, Rod Templeton) This is one CD that you can let play without skipping tracks. From the great 'don't Stop (`til you get enough) listen to the great percussion that under pines this track, to rock with you, Working day and Night, and the title track, just flow. One of the essential albums of the 70's, 80's.
The legacy of Michael Jackson......MUSICAL PERFECTION!!.......2006-05-28
It is a shame really, that a lot of talented artists, such a Michael Jackson, had to resort to "Crossing Over", (Thriller), to get a little respect and acknowledgement. Even though years prior, before "Thriller", "Off The Wall" displayed his obvious and undeniable talent as a successful solo artist. This album made Michael Jackson relevant and creditable.
-He commands the lyrics on "Don't Stop til' You Get Enough" with a soft, mature, and controlled falsettous fury. The energy, the sound, the beat, and the technical melody is unmistakable to this day. Michael takes you places, musically, midway through the song, and brings you back with a loud "OOOOOH"!!!!-This phenomenal record is almost a song within a song. There is so many things going on throughtout, its hard to pick out whats what. The beats are so complex and intricate, as well as, hard to discribe sounds that are truly fresh and unique. It almost sounds to me like Michael can be heard playing on a bathroom drain pipe with a pair of spoons, while blowing through a bottle at the same time!!!
-(or maybe not.)-smile!!
-You see, this is what makes this album so much better than "Thriller". The risks and the limitless creativeity that engulfs this project will forever stand the test of time.
This album is a historical musical milestone.
As I continue on,
-"Rock with you", "Off The Wall, and "Burn This Disco Out", were all written by Rod Temperton; And less not forget, contributed greatly to Michael's huge success as a solo artist. "Rock with you", the better of the three, starts off with an introduction of heavy and distinctive drum beats, which afterwards, allowed michael to croon and flow through the mellow melody with ease. The smooth rhythms of "Rock With You" is a welcomed change after the hyperkinetic energy of "Don't stop til' you get enough"!!
-Ladies and Gentlemen, what can I say about Michael's "Working Day and Night" except, Michael never seems to let up on this song either; -He puts it in over-drive. He safely escorts you through his wild musical beats like the crocadile hunter going at a 100mph in the AFRICAN jungle while being chased by a hungry LION!!
-"Girlfriend" is a easely dimissable, forgettable, NERDY, and clueless, but playful piece of work written by paul mcartney. I'm not sure why michael and "Q" decided to put this song on the album. It really is out of place.
-(It reminds me of the "girl is mine" on "Thriller")!!!
-"I can't help it", -This jazzy love ballad created by Stevie Wonder proudly displayed Michael's soulfulness and joyous passion for his work. This has got to be my favorite song on the whole album!!!
"She's out of my life"-makes you weak with vulnerablity. In this song, Michael truly bares his soul.
Overall, I must say, Michael Jackson incredible talent is overwhelmingly evident on "Off the wall; Even though, "Thriller" and a niave MTV generation will ultimately over-shadow the brilliance of this great album, while gaining Michael Jackson the recognition he so rightfully deserved. No one could forsee, however, that he would eventually loose touch with what brought him to the dance in the first place.
-His SOULFULNESS.

F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02
I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.
At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Traditional and Original.......2006-05-23
This is an absolute must have CD. There are no other blues artists out there as unique and as traditional as Jack Johnson, Frank Frost and Sam Carr. The combination is unforgettable! This music is something you will never hear from anyone else, and this CD is the best of the lot from those 3 artists. No soul-less virtuosity or over produced synthesis here. Just down to earth Mississippi Blues driving right at you!
Move yo' bootay!.......2004-12-13
This is one of my all-time favorite blues albums (and that's saying a lot). This is the kind of music I put on at the end of a long day at work when I'm tired and cynical but I want to MOVE 'cause I need to get stuff done. The King's music will move you in more ways than one-- everything in the music is infused with rhythm and SOUL. When I try to describe the music, words won't suffice. Listen to it and be awed -- by Big Jack's singing and guitar playing, by Sam Carr's drumming -- etc etc.
The Common Man Blues.......1999-01-13
The first time I heard the Jelly Roll Kings was in Memphis live. I knew right away I had to take some home with me. OFF YONDER WALL does not disappoint the common man with a bent for the real BLUES !
Raw blues, cuts to the bone........1998-11-20
This album is gritty, funky and loud. The Jelly Roll Kings are not afraid to get their hands dirty, in fact, they know you've got to spray some dirt around to play the blues right. Lead guitarist and vocalist Big Jack Johnson is creative and quirky on this album. He lets loose falsetto sobs and yodels on two of the tracks and his guitar-work comes in piercing attacks. Frank Frost, who takes one vocal, plays some funky keyboards throughout. Sam Carr's presence is felt on every track as he mans the drums. Many of the tracks that these three pump out are wonderful originals, such as Frank Frost Blues and Fishin' Musicians. And their work with standards like That's Alright (which opens with a fierce progression of amped up guitar notes) and Look Over Yonder Wall is very much done with Jelly Roll Kings stamped all over it. You are not going to get the same old rehashed blues.
Don't be fooled if some of my descriptions don't sound like the blues albums you envision. This album is possibly the truest to blues tradition that has come out in a long time. This album has the energy and emotion that is the blues' trademark. Off Yonder Wall does not feature some over-produced crooner, with a gaggle of backup singers behind him. Nor is it a musician copying blues originals lick for lick and singing in cheap imitation of the original artist but with half the energy. Yes, you can hear the Kings mumbling, humming and sometimes laughing just below the music. This is not a slick album, but it's got that emotion, that feeling that makes listening to the blues the visceral experience it is. This is something that you can hear. It will come out of your speakers and infect your soul.

Barry Louis Polisar, little kids' answer to Adam Sandler, clearly was on the receiving end of some flak around the time he recorded 1978's Naughty Songs for Boys & Girls. "I've had to listen to my share of adults who are concerned that I might be giving children bad ideas," he writes in the CD liner notes, but "if my songs were acceptable to absolutely everyone, I wouldn't feel as if I was doing anything worth noting." That said, and rebel spirit intact, Polisar pelts his listeners with a perfectly polished batch of wacky, imagination-stretching, roundly hilarious songs suitable to any parent/child team willing to poke fun at itself. Included are the perfectly reasonable "Don't Put Your Finger up Your Nose" (which carries the equally logical lyric, "Don't stick your finger in your ear / 'Cause then your ear will find it hard to hear"), "Never Cook Your Sister in a Frying Pan," and "You Can't Say Psbpsbpsb on the Radio"--"psbpsbpsb" being the equivalent of a raspberry. There's also a smidgen--thankfully not an overdose--of sweet fare on this disc, in the form of "With a Giggle and a Hug and a Tickle and a Kiss" and "You're as Sweet as Sugar on a Stick." There's only one track on Naughty Songs conceivably capable of inciting young listeners to rebellion, and that's the exceptional last tune, the anthem "Marching Shoulder to Shoulder," featuring the fictitious Front for Kids' Liberation, led by Polisar. "One, two, three, four / Lower the doorknobs on the doors! / Five, six, seven, eight / Don't eat the dinner on your plate!" demand the Front's members. After spinning this disc in its entirety, one gets the sense that there's probably no better advocate for those under three feet. By refusing to make nice on his records and instead zooming in on the not so warm-and-fuzzy aspects of kids' lives, he gives them oft-overlooked props. That he's so funny is the kicker that ought to convince more folks to give him a listen. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
I too grew up with this album.......2007-07-05
Someone, my mom I think, bought me this album, in record form, when I was a kid. I played that thing for years and LOVED it. I can still remember most of the songs, and sing some of them to my 3 year old. She loves "don't stick your finger in your nose." I'll be picking up a cd for her soon, perhaps for her birthday. Personally I find nothing offensive in his music. Only humor.
Naughty Songs is a classic.......2006-11-21
As a teenager in the early 80's I bought the LP version of this for my sister's tenth birthday. I hadn't yet heard it, but comparing it to the other kiddy records and knowing my sister would probably play it continuously for the next few months made me think I could probably stand hearing songs like "My Mother Ran Away Today" over and over rather than the Strawberry Shortcake Rap or whatever insipid swill was passing as wholesome family entertainment. Not only did I stand it, but I actually liked this record. It was subversive and musical enough to satisfy me and silly enough to make my sister happy. Probably the only song we ever sang together was "Never Cook Your Sister in a Frying Pan." Twenty years later I have children of my own. To this day I admonish my kids singing "Don't Put Your Finger Up Your Nose," though I had forgotten most of the words and none of my family had heard the original until we came across the cassette of this at the local library last week. Everyone enjoyed listening to the album, laughing and singing along with nearly every tune (I admit I even like the sweet songs). Thus I feel compelled to say something favorable on behalf of Polisar's collection of good humored folksy songs. It's too bad the negative reviews here resort to insult and hyperbole. That probably says more about the commentators than the record itself. Fortunately this isn't another Loony Tunes, Strawberry Shortcake, Pokemon or Disney record. It is lovingly hand-crafted idiosyncratic fun in the vein of Shel Siverstein or Roald Dahl. I guess it isn't for everyone. Grandma always said I had a puny sense of humor which may explain the appeal. I don't know much about human emotions or connections to children but this record made enough of a positive impression on my family that I decided to make my first comment on Amazon in praise of Polisar's classic.
A throwback to when we weren't so darn sensitive!.......2006-03-10
This guy played my pre-school to a packed house and I remember it vividly. We had the albums and played them in our neighbors basement incessantly. I directly blame (or credit) Barry for my sense of humor even now as I purchase this album for my son. Barry teaches that everything doesn't have to be so darn serious and we really don't have to tip toe around everybody afraid that we might ruffle a few feathers. The world is an absurd place and Barry gets kids ready to laugh it all off when things get out of control!
It's Terrific! Bravo for Naughty Songs........2005-09-19
I have four children and we listen to this CD in the car all the time. Our favorite songs are: Thump, Thump, Thump; You can't say pthhht on the radio; Don't Cook Your Sister in A Frying Pan and The Poetry Lesson. It is a fun compilation of catchy tunes, with clever lyrics. It would also make a great gift.
I grew up with this!.......2004-11-20
When I was about, oh, nine years old, my Mom got me this album. I lived in Maryland then, only actually 15 minutes away from Barry's house. He performed once at the local mall, and I got to meet him.
I love this album still, and I am 34. I gave my sister the album when she had her first child, so I am going to buy the CD. Barry Louis Polisar will live on in this house!

Product Description
OFF THE WALL is a collection of eleven original comedy songs recorded by Bill Whyte live at the Bluebird Café in Nashville. Produced by Steve Ivey, the songs range from silly to irreverent to sometimes topical. The fact that this project was recorded for Whyte Trash Records indicates that this is truly an original comedy song album. From the timely DIPSTICK (High Price Of Gas Song) to the its about time slap at karaoke singers in KING OF KARAOKE
OFF THE WALL has a little something for everyones musical funnybone. Two of the songs have been recorded by Cledus T. Judd. IF GEORGE STRAIT STARTS DANCIN is a tongue in cheek slap at country music stars who try to dance. GOIN UGLY EARLY provides a surprise ending that few see coming. IF I HAD BOOBS is written from the guys perspective of
What If, while TRAILER PARK SEXY proves that beauty is truly in the eyes of the guy holding a Bunsen Burner. As the song points out, it truly is hard not to love a woman whos got her house tied down. While writing one day with Nashville artist, Billy Dean
Billy told Bill to just let his funny side go. OFF THE WALL is the culmination of that encouragement.
