5 out of 5 stars Acapella at its finest.......2007-05-14

This is the Persuasions in their best voice. The energy and intonation as well as the selection of music is the finest available. You can not do better than this for acapella music.

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it for Gypsy Woman!.......2007-04-06

These guys were great but this album in total is not such a great package. So why the five start rating?
GYPSY WOMAN!
This song is a stellar achievement by any standards. It is one of the songs I use to evaluate a stereo system. It is utter vocal perfection.
It's wonderful that they finally put this on a CD, it was available only on vinyl.
Buy this just for GYPSY WOMAN, you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars A doo-wop classic.......2006-11-10

I've loved this record since I had a cassette from the original vinyl in the 1970's. It was finally time to replace older media!

5 out of 5 stars Let The Games Begin.......2006-10-15

When Frank Zappa signed the Persuasions to their first recording contract, based on an audition done over the phone, he probably had no idea that he was about to launch a true American treasure. In the 40 years since the release of We Came To Play, their debut effort, the Persuasions have continued to dazzle audiences with their a cappella genius, joy, and willingness to try anything. Who but the Persuasions can claim tributes to Zappa, the Beatles, nursery rhymes, and U2 - among others?

The Persuasions offer listeners so much to enjoy. First is their astonishing technical skill - all that music - produced by the human voice alone. Next is a kind of precision and discipline almost unknown in popular music. Most, Persuasions music just feels good; it gets inside you and won't let go.

For maximum hits at the minimum price, you should probably go for Street Corner Symphony, their second recording, really an amazing effort. But why stop at one? This is a fantastic CD. Walk On The Wild Side alone is worth the price of admission, and Don't It Make You Want To Go Home, Chain Gang, and Another Night With The Boys are not far behind. There simply is no other a cappella group playing in the same league as these guys.

5 out of 5 stars the soul of soul.......2003-01-17

I fell in love with the Persuasions 31yrs ago and it's been nothing but musical bliss since. These guys can sing ANYTHING good. This album is one to set standards by.It's time America finally recognized these men for what they are:a national treasure of musical. If possible, make the musical pilgrimage to see them:there is nothing like them,I guarantee you.

5 out of 5 stars T of P Horns: the best of the best.......2006-09-06

I used to hang out with these guys in the late 70s S.F. and travelled around the west coast to see their shows. Bruce & Victor Conte were at the top of their game, as was that phenomenal brass section. "Lovin' You Is Gonna See Me Thru" is an excellent cut and of course the title cut is T of P sheer beauty. I highly recommend, if you can get your hands on a copy.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing For Tower.......2001-06-03

Besides the title cut, which is a Tower Of Power classic, there is not much else on this album that will thrill anybody that likes this group. The song "Yin-Yang Thing" is the only other song on here that's really good Tower. "Share My Life" and "Love Bug" are merely ok, and the rest.....pretty awful.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Enough.......2007-02-19

A pleasant score. Fine singing, especially the wonderful Liz Callaway. The score, however, doesn't have those one or two numbers that stand out and stop you in your tracks. I haven't seen the show, and perhaps when integrated with the text.....

    5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2005-03-08

I have bought this CD with Wild party and each of them was amazing. Fist I have heard Wild party and after that I haven't thought that I would enjoy the second one but Brownstone was simply so amazing. I didn't skip songs, because all of them are beautiful sung by actors who's singing voice are pure, strong and wonderful.
As you can see, I'm a true Brian D'arcy James fan but each singer amazed me, really.
Buy this Cd if you want to hear a fantastic musical.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Type of Musical.......2004-03-09

I bought BROWNSTONE at the recommendation of a friend and have mixed feelings. I know this show has quite a history as far as transfer from off-Broadway to Broadway and the controversy surrounding its revamping for its journey to the Great White Way. I think the songs are catchy and clever, I just am sort of turned off by the orchestrations. The instruments sound like they are coming from a computer built in 1990. They sound too fake and I think there could be better orchestration, though the melodies are nice. Some songs are just corny like The Cell Phone Song, added only recently. Certain songs are great like The opening, Fiction Writer, Camouflage, and Babies on the Brain.

I would say that if you are looking for a musical CD to add to your collection that is a little different from what you're used to, BROWNSTONE is for you. And also, it features an amazing cast of seasoned veterans and new comers as well.

All in all, a nice CD.

3 out of 5 stars Not the entire collection, but at last glance this one was really cheap "used".......2005-06-26

There's Too Many "Best Hits Collections" of these guys. At last count there were more collections of Hooter songs than original albums issued. That's just plain WAKED. I suggest buying "zig zag", "Nervous Night" and "One Way Home" via the used venue here on amazon. This way you own ALL of the great music & YOU decide what their best hits are for yourself, don't let some record industry suit do it for you.

3 out of 5 stars Only for the die-hard.......1998-11-05

"We Came to Play" is a reasonably-priced collection of ten great Hooters songs. The lineup is as follows: "Day By Day," "All You Zombies," "Graveyard Waltz," "Hard Rockin Summer," "Give the Music Back," "Satellite," "Where Do the Children Go," "Fightin on the Same Side," "Beat Up Guitar" and "Brother Don't You Walk Away."

However, this collection doesn't contain any rarities (if you've already got "Nervous Night," "One Way Home" and "Zig Zag" you already have every song on this album), the cover art isn't anything special (it's the same photo found on the back of the "Zig Zag" album), there is no informative CD booklet (or lyrics sheet or any information whatsoever except for the song titles and composers), and the song doesn't even contain the band's biggest commercial hit "And We Danced."

So, if you're looking for a greatest hits collection, you should probably buy "Hooterization" instead. The only three songs on this album not found on that collection are "Graveyard Waltz," "Hard Rockin Summer" and "Give the Music Back."

However, if you're a die-hard Hooters fan and simply MUST own every single album with their name on it, then go ahead and buy this collection.

The only other people I would recommend this album to are Patty Smyth fans who want to have a copy of "Where Do the Children Go" on CD. After all, it's less expensive than buying "Nervous Night" or "Hooterization."
