Teaming with her most accomplished collaborators, producer-songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson delivers what is easily her finest record since Rhythm Nation--and arguably her best ever. Highlights include jams like "You" and "Got 'Til It's Gone," which recontextualizes samples from War and Joni Mitchell, respectively; the funky memorial to a dear departed, "Together Again"; and a slinky cover of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night." Best of all, though, is "What About." An accusatory throwdown for a lover who beats and cheats even as he professes his love, it swings angrily between tender quiet and raging bitter funk. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars an r&b classic.......2007-02-06

I love playing this back to back with mariah carey's butterfly and madonna's ray of light. All 3 albums from the biggest divas of our time showcased them at their creative peak.

5 out of 5 stars do yourself a favour kids.......2007-01-22

forget about the janet that's dating jermaine dupri and posing naked in ridiculous headdresses and BUY THIS ALBUM! Her new music might be garbage but that's no reason to ignore this masterpiece of an album and whatever came before it. Hear this and you'll know who inspired ciara and the like, and did it better than her.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous masterpiece.......2007-01-02

This album got a lot of good reviews when it was released and critics hailed it as janet's best work ever and hailed it a masterpiece of her career. Although the sales for this were pale in comparison to the precedor janet. , with time it has gone on to become a cult classic. Notice that people who criticize janet today are the same ones who hailed this album a classic and masterpiece. She definitely reached her creative peak on this album and it has stood the test of time. I can't believe it's been 10 years since this wonderful album was released. I think timing also had to do with slow sales from the start too. Had this album been released in 1996, it would have reached 5-6 million then instead of taking almost 10 years to reach that total, which I'm sure it has already.

5 out of 5 stars I was also down.......2006-12-31

I was also down in 9th grade, when this album came out. I feel like it spoke to me and helped me get over a loss in the family. A lot of questions that were going through my mind as an adolesecent were also addressed on this album. Stuff about self-worth, sexuality, loss, ups and downs, lonliness etc. And janet had much more spice than the spice girls ever did. She was real, she was raw and she put it all out there on this CD. People at that time liked together again and i get lonely but didnt' care for the CD like they did for the janet. album. Almost 10 years later, I see people who are lovers of r&b music calling it a classic record, which it always was.

3 out of 5 stars Not her worst by a long shot, but she's starting to lose it a little here.......2006-11-24

Though The Velvet Rope did spawn a couple of bona fide Janet essentials with "I Get Lonely" and "Together Again", it also marked the artistic downturn of what was once one of the hottest careers in music. The aforementioned songs and a couple of others are pretty good, but only the most astute Janet Jackson scholars should find any JJ album after this one necessary.
2004's Damita Jo is OK at best, and 2001's All For You is the most woefully mediocre thing she's done since Dream Street.

5 out of 5 stars Her last great album to date........2005-02-25

As a major Janet fan, "The Velvet Rope" to me was the last great album that Janet has released to date. A majority of the succeeding releases catered to the bottom of the barrel of the commercial dreck. But not on here. On this CD, Janet showcased a much more of a growing maturity and greater personal mood on this CD. Although many portray it as sad and down, I strongly disagree. While nothing like RN or Control, it is better than it's two following albums AFY and DJ and better than even the Janet album. Together again is a classic. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! Janet's most personal album........2003-12-22

How can you start off a review of anything by the incredible and incomparable Janet Jackson!!?? Janet is just simply stunning. Her work is always extremely thought out and beautiful. The Velvet Rope is Janet's most personal album. Dealing with issues such as hate, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, ignorance, love, acceptance and self respect, Janet has created a masterpiece. I'm a huge huge huge (not literally lol) fan of Janet and this album along with All For You are my top favorite albums by such a talented woman. This is a must have CD for any fan of pop, r&B, dance and funk. I'd say the standout track of the album would be title track opening the album up for listeners for a sneak peak of what's ahead in the CD. Simply, the song is about needing to feel special and accepting yourself for who you are. Everyone is beautiful in Janet's eyes, and she makes that clear in this touching album. The Japanese edition of The Velvet Rope contains a bonus track not available on any other version entitled, "God's Stepchild" which is a beautiful song about being loved by God. It is, however, available on the "Down In The Delta" soundtrack. I've read a lot of fans saying that this album replaces the hidden track, "Can't Be Stopped" but they are all wrong. The Japanese edition still contains the hidden bonus track, "Can't Be Stopped". "God's Stepchild" isn't replacing anything, it's just an amazing addition to this superb album. If you don't own the Velvet Rope, I strongly suggest buying the Japanese edition as it seems "complete" compared to the other international versions. JANET JACKSON FOREVER! HAHA, I LOVE YOU JANET!

5 out of 5 stars going inside Janet's Velvet Rope is slammin'.......2002-05-05

this is one of the best Janet albums ever!!!!!!!!!! This is one smashing album! I've got the u.k edition with 'Can't Be Stopped' as the bonus track. But I heard 'God's Stepchild on MTV a biography of her or something so I looked and looked for this special album and I bout it as soon as I saw it. I didn't car how much it was I payed it and it is worth it. God's Stepchild' is probably one of the best songs of her career bside'Rhtheym Nation. If ' I love this one and is deffently worth bying!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-12-09

The US version of this CD was wonderful, with a track listing that is long, but very listenable. There aren't really any songs that need to be skipped. If you have the US version, and you like/love it, then go ahead and get this one; if you're still needing to get a Velvet Rope, then this one is a great choice- either buyer should be delighted by the extra track.

5 out of 5 stars The Velvet Rope.......2000-08-12

The Velvet Rope is one of Janet's best albums to date. The album deals with personal issues such as acceptance, specialness, as well as world issues such as homophobia and the hate it causes, AIDS, domestic abuse and more. This is a painful dark album, you can tell Janet lived through this. But all through all there is a message, to feel special because we are all special. This album version from Japan also includes a bonus track not available on the US version of The Velvet Rope, a song called God's Stepchild which is worth the price. Very beautiful music here.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2007-02-12

THE VELVET ROPE IS KIND OF AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER, VERY WELL LAID OUT. THE SONGS THAT STAND OUT TO ME ARE; YOU, EVERYTIME, ANYTHING, I GET LONELY, GOT TIL IT'S GONE AND TOGETHER AGAIN. THE BONUS TRACK GOD'S STEPCHILD IS A GREAT ADDITION, IT KIND OF COMPLETES THE STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING. GREAT CD OVER ALL. ONE OF JANET'S BEST!!!
