Possessed of one of pop music's great voices, Patti Labelle has done the girl-group thing with the Bluebells, and thrown down the full-on funk with LaBelle. Her solo career found LaBelle trying on both up-tempo dance hits and classy soul ballads. This short set is from her latter period, reflecting such triumphs as "On My Own," her duet with Doobie Brother Michael McDonald that was a No. 1 pop hit, and the touchingly compassionate "Oh People." "New Attitude" and "Stir It Up," her R&B hits from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack now sound dated because of the '80s-specific production touches, but other songs--"When You Talk About Love" and "When You've Been Blessed"--show off her dynamic voice to good advantage. This set is not quite the equal of 1996's Greatest Hits, but it has a lot to recommend it nonetheless. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Defnitive, But Not All That Collection.......2003-12-30
There are just so many artists these days that truly set the stages for what Soul music should actually sound like. Particularly, I wish I could say the exact same thing about Greatest Hits collections, largely because they always seem to miss something. For Patti LaBelle, she still is one of the Greatest Voices of our generation today. Sadly, I don't think a lot of people really respect her today, as they did back in the 70's and 80's. No matter what others think, she still has a tone that is absolutely gold. Her voice still continues to be an influence anyway.
The 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection, is a series of records that are more for the budget oriented who actually can't afford the greater-priced albums. The flipside is that they really don't carry a whole lot of weight in music. For the Patti LaBelle edition, is does seem to have a few flaws in the boundaries, but has some great songs including On My Own with Michael McDonald, When You Talk About Love, If You Ask Me To, and New Attitude. The downside is that the music really wasn't remastered adequately, and a whole lot of art and music is missing from the collection including Somebody Loves You Baby (You Know Who It Is), If Only You Knew, Love, Need and Want You, I'm In Love Again, and a whole amount of other great Patti LaBelle tracks. Largely, the record only consists of her perios with her MCA / Universal Years, and not any of her years with The BlueBelles, and with LaBelle.
Although this seems like a dissapointment, it does really signify Patti LaBelle's revival by a longshot. I just hope that Universal and other record labels she's appeared on can really release something so outrageous, like a boxed set soon of Patti LaBelle and her music. As for the collection, I only suggest you get it, if you've never heard of her voice before. You might want to pass this one up.
A True Diva.......2003-03-31
I had the opportunity to listen all of Patti's music as well as seen her perform on stage. I met Patti three times personally. First time her first time performing in Shreveport, LA. The second time was also in Shreveport 4 years later, she chose my nephew Larry Ellis as one of her backup singers at this concert. I met her upclose and personally in Tuncia MS., what an experience. The lady is as true as her music, you can't help but to fall in love with her music it's so real!! I will go all over the world supporting Patti and her music, although my nephew no longer sings with her but I loved Patti before and still love her afterwards.
Lady Soul's best.......2003-01-08
I fell in love with Patti's voice way back in highschool when she was duetting with Michael McDonald.
It was 1986 and ON MY OWN just hit the # 1 spot in the US.
The song was soooo good, her voice so powerful and emotional.
I kept an eye on the lady for quite a while since then, and although i must admit she released lots of other nice tunes, her full albums never satisfied me in full, too many fillers.
On the contrary this hits collection is probably the best way to showcase what she accomplished from the '80's on.
It was such a surprise to see this greatest hits compilation being released after such a short span of time from the release of the "official" one.
Well, in my opinion this is so much better.
As well as the above-mentioned tune, it includes also the fraternity hymn OH PEOPLE, the slow-burning jam KISS AWAY THE PAIN, some three soundtrack tunes (the irresistable NEW ATTITUDE and STIR IT UP from Beverly Hills Cop and IF YOU ASKED ME TO -the original version written by Diane Warren and later covereed by Celine Dion- from a James Bond movie).
There is a funky and infectuous song composed by Prince, and a contagious couple of tracks supervised by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT LOVE is definitely one of those black dancefloor winner..!
You absolutely will be better off buying this...
great overview of her later career.......2002-11-11
Initially I didn't bother picking this album up because it didn't have any of Patti's great earlier stuff and I was worried much of her 80s output would be too dated to really enjoy. I need not have worried - this album is a joy. Yes, New Attitude, Stir It Up and Yo Mister do sound dated but they are still great fun and some of the other stuff is just sensational. When You Talk About Love is the real highlight with a great vocal arrangement and Patti's sassy wails over the top. Other great tracks include When You've Been Blessed and Feels Like Another One. Even the Dianne Warren-penned tracks are not that bad - saved mostly by Patti's delicious delivery.
A good collection of Patti's Songs.......2002-09-23
I had never been a Patti Labelle fan until I bought this collection and then I loved On my own with former doobie brothers lead singer Michael Mcdonald and then I liked this album it features lots of Patti's 80's hits from the ballad Oh People to the fun Stir It up one of the two tracks featured on the Beverly Hills cop soundtrack to the very funny Yo Mister featured on Patti's 1989 album Be Yourself then there's her version of If you ask me to featured in the James Bond film License To Kill in my eyes is way better than Celine Dion's version. We also get The right kinda lover which surprisingly is the only track That is taken from Patti's 1994 Album Gems. The only drawback is that I never stopped loving you is not on here I would also recommend Patti's 1982 greatest Hits cd The Best Of Patti Labelle
Enjoy

A Half-album of Labelle Hits / Best of Labelle, Vol. 2; Best of Patti, Vol. 1.......2007-01-04
"Lady Marmalade: The Best of Patti and Labelle" is a 1995 chronological collection of 16 Epic recordings, 8 by Labelle (tracks 1-8, 1974-1976) and 8 from Patti LaBelle's early solo career (tracks 9-16, 1977-1980).
The songs included here are good, but the legacy of the group Labelle deserves better. For a real collection of Labelle hits, see "Something Silver" a collection of songs taken from their first three albums, released 1971-1973 on Warner Bros. and RCA.
Labelle is Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash.
Patti sadly overshadowed by the camp fest of Labelle.......2002-11-17
This excellent compilation of mid to late 70s material draws upon the best of Labelle and Patti's early solo recordings during their Epic years. It is also possibly the place to start for newer fans interested in checking out Patti's legacy before she became a full fledged supper club soul artiste.
The CD is divided equally between Labelle and Patti, the solo artiste. Trouble is, the first half featuring Labelle's best known numbers from their three Epic albums ("Nightbirds", "Phoenix" and "Chameleon") is so energetic, exciting and uniformly excellent they badly overshadow Patti's solo work. Understandably, half the 8 Labelle tracks here (including their #1 smash hit "Lady Marmalade") are extracted from their chart album "Nightbirds", though the quality of these are more than matched by 2 cuts each from "Phoenix" and "Chameleon". "Messing With My Mind" is as tough as "Get Me Somebody New" is funky. Somebody should lobby CBS to release the never-before-reissued "Phoenix" on CD, seeing that both "Nightbirds" and "Chameleon" have long been available in CD format.
Unfortunately, what goes up must come down. After the excitement and camp fest of Labelle, Patti's soft soul MOR ballads which take up the second half of this CD just seems so tame and boring. Apart from the samba styled "Teach Me Tonight", nothing that Patti cut with Epic remotely rivals the work of Labelle. Without the presence of Sarah and Nona to spice things up and lend Labelle its progressive touch, Patti gives in to her own smaltzy and maudlin tendencies and there's plenty of evidence to suggest that this was at work here.
This "best of" in the Legacy series is nevertheless a terrific compilation. Buy it for the two rare-on-CD Labelle tracks from "Phoenix" if nothing else.
"GUT BUCKET "SISTA'S".......2002-11-14
PATTI LaBELLE, NONA HENDRIXS & SARAH DASH, ARE THREE SISTA'S FROM THE DAYS OF SOUL! WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC. THE VOCAL BLENDING, THE RYTHYMIC SOUNDS, JUST PURE FUNK 'N SOUL. THIS IS WHAT SINGING WAS ABOUT. NOT, THAT TODAY'S MUSIC ISN'T GOOD, BUT IT CAN'T MATCH NOTE FOR NOTE...SCREAM FOR SCREAM...PUTTING YOUR HEART IN IT!! LaBELLE WAS THIS TYPE OF ARTIST. JUST LISTEN TO: "WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU", OR "MESSING WITH MY MIND";..."THERE'S NO MORE TO SAY..."
Just a minor correction.......2002-03-02
Lady Marmalade was not written by Patti Labelle even though many people are giving her credit for it. She was covering the song that was written and performed by Kenny Nolan and Bob Crewe of The Eleventh Hour.
THE MOULIN ROUGE QUEEN OF SOUL !.......2001-06-09
This song was made in the 70s but, Mya,Pink,Christina Aguilera, and Lil' Kim and permission to copy Patti Labelle's hit song "Lady Marmalade". The song remade by the young talented artists did the movie for the movie "Moulin Rouge".

Authentic soul and passionate disco.......2007-08-05
This falls short of being a Best Of by the mighty soul voice Patti Labelle. It nevertheless contains some of her greatest disco and soul hits like the dance classic Music Is My Way Of Life, torch masterpieces like I Don't Go Shopping and Come What May, and the majestic uptempo Lady Marmalade with its raucous French chorus which was considered rather risque way back in the seventies. Her gritty soul is immaculately expressed in tuneful dance numbers like Joy To Have Your Love and passionate ballads like You Are My Friend. Although incomplete, having been first released many years ago, this is an enjoyable album of R&B classics. I also recommend Gonna Take a Miracle with Laura Nyro and Nightbirds by the group Labelle.
Patti Labelle - Great Songstress.......2006-08-24
This CD includes songs that you won't find anywhere else. I love "I don't go shoppin for love" and "You are my friend." I listen to this CD often. It is a must have for any Patti Labelle collection.
EVERYTHING PATTI DOES IS GREAT........2006-03-22
THIS CD IS GREAT EVEN THOUGHT ONE REVIWER PUT ON MY OWN SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THERE. IDIOT THIS WAS PUT OUT IN 1982 ON MY OWN CAME OUT IN 1986. SMART! BUY IT!1
Wrong Title, But Who Cares?.......2004-12-23
I guess it must be hard actually to assemble the "best" of Patti Labelle, because everything she has done musically is choice. This little package of songs is pathetic in that it has so FEW of her songs. And the best should include certified hits like "Own My Own" (not listed) and her early work like "Down the Aisle" when I estimate she was about 17 to 18 (if her biography gives her real birthdate). But I give it 5 stars for what's here to hear. We're talking PATTI LABELLE after all. Unless you've lived your life in a cave, you know what I mean.
The title says everything about it.......2003-10-21
When the theme is Patti LaBelle, it's not easy for me to say what I really feel about her. I'm sure that Patti is POTENCIALLY one of the best singers whe had the change to know with one of the best voices a woman could be blessed with. But using a word Patti seems to love, what does she really do with all of her "blessings"? Patti has been recording poor material and a lot of albums where you can only listen to one or two songs without crying desperately for more than a decade! I don't know if her producers are fault (maybe she needs a special guidance on how to use her powerful vocals which sometimes sound really strange) or the problems are the constant tries to be up to date and sound like mariahs and tonis and stuff like that.
The fact is that in this compilation you're gonna find some of the best interpretations Patti made in her entire carreer: ¨You Are My Friend¨, the fan-favourite, was sung from the heart and the vocal arrangement is impressive. ¨Little Girls¨ is a beautiful ballad which features Patti's most ¨calm¨ and deep vocals. ¨It's Alright With Me¨ and ¨Music Is My Way Of Life¨ have incredible disco arrangements and everybody dances listening to them on my parties (and ask me who it was). ¨Joy To Have Your Love¨ is a typical Patti song, exagerated, full of unnecessary instruments but anyway a classic R&B hit - the first single from her 1st solo effort to date. On ¨I Don't Go Shopping¨ with its obvious lyrics Patti tells you that love is something that money can't buy - but in her voice it sounds great! And ¨Come What May¨, the wedding song she sang live for Cyndi Lauper when she was in this situation, closes this compilation with one of the most beautiful vocal arrangements of a Patti LaBelle song. Patti just shows you that life is a connection of emotional breakdowns and phoenix-like reinventions of yourself.
This collection is an incredible item which brings you the best material of Patti's first solo years. History proved that Patti came to the world with the undeniable ability (or need?) to sing and that she did it great since the beginning of her Bluebelles years with its best part on her innicial solo years by Sony. The material which came later also contains good songs, but they are really hard to find.
The cover is terrible, but I think it gives this record a certain charm... something kitschy and done in 3 seconds... but that's worth it. The price is low anyway ;-P

Customer Reviews:
Another Missed Attitude.......2007-05-18
Within the past several years, there have been many different greatest hits albums that have either shown a light that has done either a great job, or a missed opportunity at highlighting an artist and what has made them a success. Although there have been so many these past few years that have worked, others really feel that it is just too much, especially with R&B. One example, Patti Labelle, has really shown a great diversity with soul that has lasted over 45 years. Still, there have been numerous hits records the pazt several years that have been released, that have also drawn consumers away. Now, a re-released hits record from 1999 returns to the store shelves, but will it deliver something better than before?
The 2007 re-release of Patti LaBelle's 20th century Masters: The Millennium Collection, is a reflection of Patti's era of the 80's and 90's, mainly focusing in on her era with MCA records. The 12 track collection tries to provide itself as a sampler of what has made soulful and down to Earth as you could still remain imaginative. The songs have been remastered a bit better than its 1999 edition, but nothing new has been added. The collection includes great songs including On My Own with Michael McDonald, her Beverly Hills Cop classic, New Attitude, her #1 dance hit When You Talk About Love from her overlooked Flame album, and If You Ask Me Too. The collection though sadly misses out on a lot of great tracks that've been standards from Patti all throughout the years like Lady Marmalade, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and Love, Need and Want You.
All in all, The Patti LaBelle 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection isn't the best bet for die hard Patti fans, as much as it is for those who haven't yet heard her remarkable octives. With so many different Patti LaBelle hits records, I really recommend her 1996 Greatest Hits record, or her 2005 Gold album instead of this one. This one just could've been a better attitude than what Patti LaBelle has delivered over five decades.
