Teddy P...........2005-04-21
His deep-rooted soul and sexy singing burst onto the scene when others were still doing 4 part harmonies, wearing galactic costumes and practicing cheographed steps! He gave to women what no other male solo performer had ever given them; hot, melting, dripping raw sensuality on wax! His "For Women" only concerts were bold, legendary and always Sold Out! Not many artists present or past can touch that! His "Live" shows were something to behold!
This is a nice collection of his "love-making jams" and well worth the investment of your money! It's one solid song after the other...and further illustrates what's missing today with so many soul singers! Good music, good writing and good delivery! His performance on the Ashford and Simpson penned "Is It Still Good To Ya" is enough to make you stop what you're doing and turn the volume all the way up! And my all time favorite TP song is here too "Can't We Try." This CD goes beyond enjoyable, it's just plain necessary for any real soul collection!

Teddy Bear.......2007-05-13
This is a very good cd and it brings back a lot of old memories.
WHAT CAN I REALLY SAY????.......2005-03-05
They dont make music like this anymore. And it's unfortunate. Teddy Pendergrass MEANT IT when sang a song. You can feel it. You can taste it. Soul R&B from this era is totally different from what it is today. These guys actually cared about their music FIRST. The almighty dollar was nice, dont get me wrong, but for artists like Teddy Pendergras, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Freddie Jackson, Jeffrey Osbourne, etc. their music, and the quality of their music, came first. Todays artists will put out any old piece of crap just for the money. Their music has no soul. This is a beautiful album. I love to put this album on and just let it run. Teddy has such a beautiful voice and his lyrics come right from his heart and soul. When Mr. Pendergrass is hurting in a song, the listeneer is also hurting. This music is timeless. I wish todays artists would wake up.
Exactly Like I Thought It Would Be!.......2004-07-22
Teddy Pendergrass put it down on every slow jam on this album. Every song is classic, but the masterpieces everyone has heard. Close the Door, Love TKO, Turn Off The Lights, You're My Latest My Greatest Inspiration, Come Go With Me. Everything is crystal clear and timeless. The lyrics are beyond greatness and the instrumentation beautiful. Simply Put it's a must have. Don't hesitate!
A fine collection that had room for more..........2003-06-16
Despite its featuring some of TP's most popular slow jams it could have included "Is It Still Good To Ya?" which is the crowning moment of the "TP" album. With that exception, this is one nice compilation full of romantic gems from an R&B legend.
The MAN's man's balladeer..........2003-04-13
Alright, class, I don't think I ask for much in my music, na'mean? Jus' a nice groove, lush n' firm vocals an' some content I can relate to. Not even necessarily relate to, jus' sumpin' with SUBSTANCE, 'cause my mind is starved for that in this year 2003. I grew up hearin' Teddy Pendergrass, my sister was ALL ABOUT some Teddy P. an' I picked it up from that point. Is' jus' that voice, is' guttural an' raw yet seductive at the same time, e'nuff 'ta work two bodies up into a frenzy. Serious point though, listen to this at nighttime, by a fireplace, with a woman, an' some wine. She might think you pourin' it on a lil' thick when she heats 'Love T.K.O.' an' 'Close the Door', but when that 'Turn Out the Lights' comes on, ohhhh man, is' ON! Teddy'll be screamin' an' shoutin' an' you'll be pretty much sangin' along. This disc is a must fa' the bachelor's pad or the player's ball, 'cause if you think you got game an' your collection is missin' Teddy P., then, son, you don't have no idea what you're doin'. Alright, class dismissed. For homework tonight, go buy this CD. If I don't see no struttin' or no confident smiles when y'all come back, I'm'a mark you down as a zero, 'cause I'll know you ain't do your homework.

"Let's take a shower together." Between Al Green and Luther Vandross, and way before South Park's Chef, came Teddy Pendergrass, the king of the soul seduction masters for a half-decade after his mid-'70s departure from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Greatest Hits gives the solo Pendergrass his due with 15 signature rubdowns. The greatest of the great, 1980's "Love T.K.O.," ends the album's survey of TP's Philadelphia International years; two songs cut for Elektra after the singer's paralyzing 1982 auto accident round it out. If you haven't heard these enticing tunes or thought about the man they called Teddy Bear in years, this is a reminder you need. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
teddy pendergrass greatest hits.......2007-03-04
i recently purchased the cd "teddy pendergrass-greatest hits" on the right stuff label 1998. great collection of his hits including my favs "only you", "shout and scream" (both great funky tunes with pendergrass sounding a bit like tom jones), "i don't love you anymore", "the more i get the more i want", "when somebody loves you back", "life is a song worth singing" "turn off the lights", "can't we try" (pendergrass singing his heart out) and "love t.k.o.". i wish his other great funky tune "get up get down get funky get loose" was on this compilation. the music is terrific with first class musicians and pendergrass delivers on ballads and up tempo tunes with his powerful raspy great voice. "greatest hits" is a great collection. teddy pendergrass to me is the greatest male soul singer ever. his phrasing, his voice and style is truly brilliant.
My Man Teddy.......2007-01-14
I alreqdy had the "A Touch of Class" CD but I got this one as a Christmas gift I like it just as much as the other CD, so to go along with that review "it has my favorite song on it "Come and go with Me and other favorites Turn Off the Lights, Close the Door, Love T.K.O. and When Somebody Loves You Back. I love it, it brings back memories.
A good starting point........2007-01-10
For the uninitiated, this collection of Teddy Pendergrass' greatest hits from 1977-90 is a good starting point. The Cd plays for 79 minutes and David Nathan's liner notes provide a fine overview--musically and in writing--of Teddy's most prolific period. This is NOT, however, a definitive collection--for that , get either the "{Anthology" or "Significant Singles" double-CD packages. A great compilation but one that's neither definitive nor conclusive.
Teddy P........2007-01-10
Come on. Can you really go wrong with Teddy P.? My only issue with this CD is that it was not long enough.
Powerful package from a TRUE talent!.......2005-11-12
At 37 I'm old enough to remember all of Teddy's solo work when it was first released and being played on local R&B radio. My moms bought the albums, 45s or 8 tracks and we enjoyed the music. Now that I'm older and have listened to lots and lots of "performers" with no real vocal talent, I've truly come to appreciate a genuine talent whose passion is truly felt in his music. That's almost non-existent today.
I like all the songs. This is a good collection. However being a close follower of Teddy for decades, if I were building the collection and were limited to only one CD I would have omitted the following: "Life is a Song", "The More I Get", "Shout and Scream" & "Can We Try", and instead included: "Hold Me", "Love is The Power", "It Don't Hurt Now" & "My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration". I think that would be the ultimate, single CD Teddy Collection.
Overall this CD is well worth the money; far from disappointing. But I believe that many long time Teddy fans would make the same substitutions I suggested.

Pendergrass's second album after his departure from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes continued his solo ascent. Life Is a Song Worth Singing masterfully mixes and matches moods, flowing from two very different anthems (the dramatic title track and the party jam "Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose") through seductive classics such as "Close the Door." His rich vocals ride tasty Philly tracks on one of the city's true masterpieces. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
The peak..........2006-06-12
I was only 4 years old when this album came out, but I remember WELL the day my father came home with THIS album. The first song he put on was "Only You", and that did it for me!
For me this IS Teddy's peak because this album has a great balance of upbeat and more mellow material while the albums after this focused more on the bedroom. They were still good albums, but the funk factor was sacrificed. This album and his self-titled solo debut are the ones I remember most and bring back the most memories of Teddy from my childhood before his injury.
Anyway, the balance, again, is what makes this album so great. I mean he can come out with FUNK on "Only You", disco-ish on the title cut, he gets DOWN, gets FUNKY, and gets loose (which sounds a lot a like the song Rerun always danced to on "What's Happenin'"), "When Somebody Loves You Back", and of course, "Close The Door."
Like Luther Vandross, a lot of people forget that Teddy had a hell of a way with dance-oriented and upbeat music. This album is proof positive. If you're looking to buy ONE album from Teddy, this is it.
The album that made Teddy a solo superstar!.......2003-08-24
This was Teddy's second album and "Close The Door" virtually guaranteed he would continue to be the #1 male R&B singer of the 1970s. His self-titled solo debut had set the prototype for his subsequent PIR releases but this one became his most successful project thanks to "Only You", "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" and the above-mentioned classic ballad.

The best love songs in my time........2004-12-29
Words cannot adequately describe the feeling i get when i listen to these bedroom classics.Absolutely beautiful incredibly romantic music of the highest quality. My favorite track is #9 in my time it brings emotional goose bumps all over me.
Awesome bedroom collection........2004-02-08
I am a great Teddy Pendergrass fan I have all of the cds and whatever dvd is available. For this particular cd it is truly one for the bedroom. Sexy, Sexy just for cuddling with your special someone. Purchase and you will not be sorry, light some candles and just listen and soothe your mind to the greatest voice that ever lived. Love you Teddy Pendergrass and the compilation is truly awesome and fantastic. This man can sing now doubt about it.
The Elektra years+2 ringers.......2004-01-31
It's hard to believe it took until 2004 for somebody to anthologize Teddy's stay at Elektra. After his auto accident, Pendergrass left Philadelphia International and signed with Elektra. 14 of the 16 songs on this CD are from that era and it covers the years 84-93. Rhino throws in 2 Philly years ringers: "Close The Door" and "Turn Off The Lights" to back up their title concept. Besides the R&B hits, this also covers some album tracks, and is a decent look at his Elektra stint. Some people say this era wasn't as strong as the Philly years, but there's enough great songs here like "Joy" and "You're My Choice Tonight" (the latter written and Produced by Luther Vandross), as well as his last R&B #1 as of 2004, "It Should've Been You", to refute that claim. There's also one song that stands with the 2 ringers here, "Love 4/2" that's as good as anything Teddy has ever recorded. The only weak link on this CD are the liner notes. A useless 5 page reminiscece by a Tracy H. New that offers no insight into Teddy's career or his Elektra years. If you have his Greatest Hits CD or the Anthology CD than this is a must have for your collection.

Big let down.......2007-06-08
This CD was a big let down. None of the songs played compare favorably to the originals. Very little soul or imagination in the arrangements of all the songs. All the songs are also short and the endings leave a lot to be desired.

Great Essentials.......2007-05-30
This cd has one of the best selection of Teddy Prendegast, pre-solo. His voice varies from one song to the other between soft and sexy and rough and gritty. The back up singers (BlueNotes) aren't bad either.
Seventies soul from Philadelphia.......2004-10-30
Philadelphia is not one of the first cities that usually come to mind when discussing pop music, but during the seventies this was where much of the best soul-pop music came from, with many brilliant singers and groups showing the world what they were capable of. The Three Degrees and the O' Jays were among the most successful, together with Harold Melvin and the Blue notes, whose lead singer during their peak years was actually Teddy Pendergrass.
Singer-pianist Harold Melvin formed the group in 1954 (yes, I was surprised to learn that) and was its lead singer and songwriter for many years, during which time the group remained a local act. John Atkins took over lead vocals in the mid sixties but the group remained local. Eventually, Harold discovered Teddy who then joined the group, initially as a drummer. After John Atkins quit, Teddy was given his chance as lead singer and things happened quickly. The group were signed to a new label and given new songs by top songwriters, resulting in a series of great hits. Perhaps the name should have also been changed as Teddy was by then the star and focal point of the group.
The group had several major international hits including Wake up everybody, The love I lost and If you don't know me by now before Teddy quit the group in 1976, apparently because he resented the group name with Harold's name up front.
In the UK, the group's biggest hit was Don't leave me this way, which they had recorded in 1975 but wasn't released as a single anywhere at the time. Thelma Houston covered the song in 1977 and topped the American charts but Harold Melvin's original version was released as a UK single and made number five with Thelma's version peaking at thirteen. I wonder what might have been if their own version had been released in Britain and America in 1975. Actually, I love both these versions as well as the 1986 cover by the Communards (with Jimmy Somerville as lead singer) that topped the UK charts.
This re-mastered collection contains all the essential tracks from the Teddy Pendergrass years, including all the tracks I've already mentioned. If you enjoy seventies soul music, you'll love this collection.

With its muted trumpet solo and exhortation of "My car's right outside, we can leave right now," Teddy Pendergrass's "Come Go with Me" is the "Born to Run" of seductive soul. While Pendergrass's plea has perhaps less of a metaphysical aspect, there's also no doubt by song's end that he's every bit as triumphant as Bruce Springsteen as he drives away. As laidback as any of Pendergrass's albums--even the speediest of the three disco tracks, "Do Me," implies a certain languidness--Teddy is a fine souvenir of the period when he was the ladies' man of choice in R&B. Along with Life Is a Song Worth Singing and TP, it's choicest among his albums. --Rickey Wright

The pleasure to listen a bit of real music.......2007-03-11
Teddy Pendergrass is still one of my favorite voices. An album like this gives to my soul a precious moment of relief, in a moment when you can't turn on the radio without listen an overwhelming invasion of sampled sounds and boring song "covers". Aside the unique Teddy's vocals skills, i love to listen the perfect musical arrangements of these songs. I think that this album shows an amazing care about the arrangements...and this is something that we can rarely find into the whole discography of many modern performers. These tunes are the memory of another way to make music, when performers, producers and musicians really known how to create beautiful songs.
Teddy's crowning album........2003-06-29
Songs such as "Come Go With Me" and "Turn Off The Lights" helped make Teddy Pendergrass the most popular and best-loved male soul singer of the late 1970s and this 1979 release forever cemented his status as one of the genre's best. The disco numbers don't fit very well here, though.

voice. This CD is excellent. The song LOVE TKO is a masterpiece
and fits well into this CD
A much better reissue than The Right Stuff's........2003-07-20
This U.K. reissue of this landmark album not only has better sound quality and liner notes than The Right Stuff's domestic reissue but it contains three bonus tracks. The classic ballads "Love TKO", "Feel The Fire" and "Is It Still Good To Ya" are this album's highlights.
At his Prime.......2001-07-19
While his roots are definatly in the south, and style of Al green. This is Teddy at his prime. I can remember playing this LP back then at clubs. Put on for a closing song Feel the fire and many a person never left alone. If your a lover of from the heart music this is a must have cd. A lot of people where never aware that teddy was actually the lead singer for Harold melvin and the bluenotes. Who where a very big hit in their own right. What a lot of people unless fans of this gendre did not know is that Harold had left the band years before any huge commercial hits. The lead singer job became teddys and the band continued to realease records under the old name. I still attribute the rise of such greats as Luthor Vandross, Peobo bryson and others to the ground that Al green laid down, and teddy continued. If you love from the heart soul, and have an hour or so to spare as thereis no 3 mins songs here. Then this is a must have cd

Customer Reviews:
Teddy.......2007-05-13
This is the worst cd I've ever purchase it only have one good song on it.
An excellent if slightly inappropriate comeback........2003-07-17
"Love Language" was Teddy's first post-accident album and a strong comeback. Most of the songs, however, were more MOR-pop than R&B (which I find rather strange) but this may have been the direction Teddy planned on going had he not suffered that horrendous car accident.
Should have been on the greatest hits compilations.......2002-10-10
I don't know why some of these songs aren't on his greatest hits CDs. Love 4/2, In My Time, they are great songs. It's most likely due to copywright laws and ownership.
Did you know it's a soundtrack?.......2000-05-03
I learned about this beautiful music via the movie Choose Me - a great comedy of errors and misbegotten choices, for which Teddy provides smooth and sexy ambiance.
Simply The Best.......1999-12-28
There isn't a woman alive who shouldn't listen to Teddy sing beggingly "Stay With Me" and also the duet with Whitney.
