Album Description

"There's a good chance that twenty years from now we'll be talking about The Blackouts in the same way we speak of Television or The Modern Lovers today. The Blackouts seem to have all the makings of a great, peerless band that's destined to fail where it counts most as far as the bottom line is concerned: record sales… one of the better rock records you'll hear this year from the most refreshing rock and roll band this side of stardom. There's no mountain of hype preceding The Blackouts' sophomore album as with The Strokes' second offering. Likewise, there are also no expectations for this relatively unknown band from the corn fields of Illinois. And that's precisely why discovering The Blackouts is like a breath of fresh air in a crowded room of rock and roll pretenders all bumping elbows in order to grab a second of face time with the general public.

While other bands are thinking "career", The Blackouts are thinking "beer". And as corny as that sounds, it's because of that relaxed attitude and disregard for "making it big" that these guys have been able to go out and create art on their own terms. Living in Blue is the kind of sincere, ass-kicking record Lester Bangs would have called an indictment of all that's wrong with media-hyped Rock and Roll Lite bands like The Vines and Kings of Leon. You know, "style is originality and fashion is facism" and "grossness is the truest criterion for rock 'n roll". All that shit. Honesty doesn't have a way of winning over the masses… But we… are ready for some good old fashioned authenticity.

And if that means rooting for a band that isn't comprised of Brooklyn-based art school grads living off trust funds and battling depression with prescription drugs, then so be it… This is an album that swaggers with a Cool Hand Luke toughness yet feels as comfortable as your favorite pair of worn-down Levi's. Much of The Blackouts' poised performance on record is indebted to the band's white riot of a live performance. On stage, they're sexy, genuine… and as… dangerous as can be.

Turns out a good bit of the band's live energy manages to transfer into 0s and 1s on disc. For their sophomore effort, The Blackouts hooked up with longtime Champaign producer Adam Schmitt (Velvet Crush, HUM, The Action), took the new songs they spent the summer writing on the road into the studio, and came out on the other end with what I'll calmly call an authentic rock and roll remedy in a record. You want a story to sell to your readers? How about this: rock and roll music is back to make an honest living. The Blackouts are your 100% proof. Drink up." - Doug Hoepker.

3 out of 5 stars Middle-of-the-road rock and roll -- but worthy.......2007-02-28

"Living in Blue" by the Blackouts (now named Living Blue) might have benefited from a more structured recording process, but overall this is tuneful enough garage rock with some wailing guitar solos in spots and true rock-and-roll spirit. Some of the songs sound like they were recorded at too rushed of a pace, such as the opener, "Something...I Can't Say," but the more controlled songs make this album worth hearing. "No Tomorrow" and "Let You Down" deservedly got serious airplay in Champaign, Il., where the Blackouts are from, while "Pink Fuzz Blues," a kind of maudlin, poppy-sounding song that still manages to rock, and "Where it Begins," probably the best tune on the CD due to its great drumming, synth in the background and driving rhythm, are great songs in their own right. Singer Stephen Ucherek, meanwhile, gives the album a little added flavor with his unique vocal style, which includes a British-sounding accent at times. "Test" is a unique song that features a baritone male voice voicing philosophical statements and questions to an innocent little girl, who replies in her most hopeful tone. (Ex.: Are you living or are you dying? Answer: I am here, and I am trying.) That unique exchange leads to "Open Casket Access," another worthy song that closes out the CD. It won't change the world and there is muddled instrumentation at times, but "Living in Blue" is still a worthy album by a pretty good band.

4 out of 5 stars good!.......2006-01-30

very cool record. loud, trashy, twangy chords that sound like they were strangled out of the guitar's neck intermingle with pounding drums and killer bass. The Blackouts rock with an urgency that is clear and concise in it's delivery. they never sound like they are searching for an identity, they seem to have a strong musical backbone and it shows on the confidence in their swagger on this album. Link Wray's garage rock stomp updated on Husker Du's dime?

5 out of 5 stars if i hear the S-word one more time...........2004-07-05

If I hear the S-word one more time in relation to the B-word I will find the person who said it and...well, i probably won't do anything. But keep this in mind. As labels pay big bucks to "break" such "talented" bands like the Strokes and the "Kings" of Leon overseas, one only needs to look to the nation's midsection (right above her belly button) to find what A&R people at major labels, after not signing these fine boys, will undoubtedly refer to as "the mistake of their lives."
The Blackouts.
Best live rock'n'roll band i've seen. Ever. Joe is the best guitarist i've seen. Ever. Pat is the best drinker i've seen. Ever. Steve's got the most soul i've seen in a white boy. Ever. And I think Mark, in addition to being an amazing drummer, has Bun E. Carlos totally licked at smoking cigarettes whilst playing drums. And the best part of this is that it all translates beautifully to recording. But you know, their demoes sounded pretty stellar, too. I honestly think they're just that good of a band. Hands down the best Rock'n'Roll (in it's truest form) offering since the Face's A NOD IS AS GOOD AS A WINK...TO A BLIND HORSE.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awsome!!!.......2004-05-28

I started listening to this CD 3 weeks ago and it has not left my CD Player. Like the review title says Simply Awsome and a must buy for your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll the way it was meant to be..........2004-05-26

I've been following The Blackouts for about two years now, starting with their first album "Everyday is a Sunday Evening." That CD kept me humming and singing to myself, frequently while on public transportation. When I heard they had a new album out I wondered how they could top their first... but they did. This is one of the best rock albums I have EVER heard. Not just amongst their contemporaries but going back into the early days of rock and through the hay-days of punk and beyond. Many people say "The Blackouts sound like ARTIST X only different." But the TRUE key to the timelessness of their sound is that they DON'T sound like any one artist or band, but it is clear they know their roots and have been influenced by, dare I say, HUNDREDS of past and present rockers.

You'll hear that this album sounds like The Strokes or The White Stripes... but The Blackouts are everything those bands aren't and it shines through like a 1000-watt floodlight on "Living In Blue." If your collection is missing this album you may be missing one of the greatest ever. And it won't be a secret much longer...

The music industry sometimes sees a glut of handsome young dudes with honey-coated voices and acoustic guitars making sensitive and savvy pop-folk, but there's always room for another when they're as talented as this guy. The Chicago-based singer-songwriter Carey Ott is releasing his debut with Lucid Dream, but one listen and it's clear that he's been honing his craft for years (both solo and with his alt-rock band Torben Floor). Ott makes pleasantly middle-of-the-road bedroom indie-pop songs that doesn't pretend to be anything other than that, and are solid enough to make the transition to radio, should the stars align properly. Tracks like "Mother Madam," "Am I Just One," and "Daylight" combine a strong melodic sense with a knack for subtle details. A few of the songs sound too similar to one another, but that's nothing that experience and perhaps a different producer wouldn't fix. If Damien Rice and Neil Finn are your favorite artists, you'll adore Carey Ott. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Carey Ott has had the success in a few short months that most artists hope for in their entire careers. Two music placements in the second season of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy", another slot in Fox's new show "Kyle XY", the #1 most downloaded slot at eMusic.com, and an advertising/cross promotion with Sony and Coors. This album serves as the perfect introduction to an artist who continues to draw comparisons to Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, Coldplay, and Oasis.

I stumbled across Carey Ott at a local concert and was completely blown away by his performance. They were selling his "Lucid Dream" CDs at the concert and so I picked one up. It has been one of the best purchases I have made in a long time with a new recording artist. He gives the same phenominal performance on disk that he gave live. Buy this CD and you definitely won't regret it. It's not commericial pop [...], but true art that any music lover will appreciate.

Thunderlip is a relatively new band, emerging from Wilmington, NC, but I think they are quickly on the way to being a huge success. Frontman Chuck Krueger is a natural born performer, and backed by four stellar musicians, cannot be stopped. While this album does not quite capture the intensity of a live Thunderlip show, it is an excellent rock album - not afraid to be loud and daring. From hardcore-reminiscent vocals to killer bass and guitar riffs to synchronized guitar solos to complex and persistent drum beats, Thunderlip proves that they are not out to be cool, they are out to kick butt.

5 out of 5 stars The Thunder Of The Lips!!.......2005-08-01

I've seen this band three times now and every time they have gotten more intense! This album is non-stop wild rock 'n' roll the way it is supposed to be! Imagine Black Sabbath meets Iggy Pop, with dissonance of leather pants, cheetah print jackets, and alcohol.

This is different to the boring Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath imitation I was expecting. This is a more authentic classic hard rock style, like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd's poppy upbeat stuff. I don't like this kind of music, but if you're looking for an authentic sounding retro rock band that doesn't reduce old-school rock to it's most basic elements, like The Strokes, The Hives, and The White Stripes do, then this is the band you've been looking for.

    3 out of 5 stars Therion-'Arab Zaraq Lucid Dreaming'(Nuclear Blast America).......2005-06-01

Another Swedish metal band.Best thing about 'Arab Zaraq...' is that it features some decent covers, like the Scorpion's "Fly To The Rainbow",Iron Maiden's "Children of the Damned" and Judas Priest's "Here Come The Tears".As for the band's originals, most of the CD here is okay.More like goth/metal.Nothing great, but then again it doesn't suck either.Might appeal to fans of Iced Earth,Kreator,King Diamond,Edge Of Sanity and Fates Warning.See what you think.

5 out of 5 stars my first therion & always a favorite for me.......2002-11-04

when i first bought this cd because i thought the digipack version was cool, little i knew about therion, about change in their style, about theli or their other cds. neither did i know then that i'd use this cd as a guide to my initiation to good music.

anyway, let's take from the beginning, i didn't notice anyone writing here that cd is special in one other way, it was supposed to celebrate the 10th birthday of therion, that's why it's a bit different than the other releases, it is supposed to be a treat to the fans!

the cd has 3 parts : the covers, the soundtrack & the "therionized" versions of picks from this soundtrack

the soundtrack is the weakest part of the cd, it gives a hint though of things to come & of what to expect in the next releases

the best tracks off the soundtrack are given a special therion treatment, heavier & more enjoyable they become as a result, all are favorites of mine

the covers though are awesome. what can one say of these covers? my favorites are fly to the rainbow (uli jon roth is cj's fave guitarist after all) & here come the tears, incredibly beautiful songs with nice lyrics as well as great music

in the covers section, there are two leftovers from the theli sessions which could have been included to it as they are great songs & one reprise of the symphony of the dead, one of my favorite instrumentals to this day

so, what i'm trying to say here is that this cd should be on everyone's collection, either for the covers, the soundtrack or the rarities (leftovers). if you find the digipack version, grab it immediately, a real beauty it is

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as their other albums.......2002-07-26

If this album were to stand on its own, apart from their other work, it would get 3-4 stars from me. However, compared to their other work, it's really only worth 2 at best. This album doesn't have the true metal feel of the other albums - I would recommend Deggial, Vovin, or Secret of the Runes instead of this one.

    3 out of 5 stars Could've done much better.......2000-12-18

No, this isn't the album to buy, unless you really want to spend the money. Comparing it with the other works of Therion, this is a major disappointment. I don't even know what happened. There still is some of that beloved mix of metal and classics, but many things have gone wrong. The songs that are good (yes, there are some), sound like a mere repetition of "Theli". Indeed, if I were you, I'd definetly go for Therion, but not for this album: it's just not the best. Instead, buy "Vovin", or "Crowning of Atlantis". And if you already own those, don't even bother, rather consider their earlier works.

    5 out of 5 stars I love it.......1999-06-19

I just bought this cd a couple days ago, but it is already one of my most favorite cd's of all time. This cd, although repeating a couple tracks, is magnificent. The eighth song, Enter Transcendental Sleep is one of the best songs on it. Get it, and treasure it, and if you are really out-going, buy the movie, which this cd is a soundtrack to.

    Album Description

Tamra begins at her most confrontational, singing of claustrophobia, of ties that bind, of being stuck in something old, of having reached the end of something. But by the time we get to the opening song of "What's the question?" it seems that Tamra has decided the answer is to "try something new before we die." And so the last songs seem to be about the scary pleasures of getting out, of finding release. By the final track (significantly entitled "Shelter") I felt like I had just heard rock's first novel.

But to describe these CDs in literary terms is to do a disservice to the fact that "Tacoma Ballet" is above all a genre-hopping journey through country blues, Ramonesesque punk, dark psychedelia, electronic sound collage, with a very strong nod to the Rolling Stones, including a loopy deconstruction of "Happy" off "Exile on Main Street," and, perhaps most of all, a blending of the aggressive, menacing bass sound of Peter Hook at the height of Joy Division and the band's general enthusiasm for all things Pere Ubu.

"A punk Exile on Main Street" with shades of The Stooges, Riot Grrrl, Pere Ubu, and even The Doors," Magnet Magazine. After reading that I bought this. Patty Schemel of Hole plays drums with Greta Brinkman of Moby's band on bass. The music and the words all combine to create something like an independent movie. It rocks hard, floats away ethereal, grinds noisey, talks right to you, yet its like spying on the inside of a person's mind. If you like intelligent rock this is for you!

On their debut album, Lucid Dreams, southern California's Alias Zone mixes samples in real time loops and digital processing, topped off with flutes, bass, and beat poetry. That results in the swampy, murky moods of "Phungue" with dub bass lines, Indian and conga drums, and the swirling, electronically extended flute of Richard Bugg. Textures swirl and mutate, instruments morph, and sound effects roll across the stereo spectrum in a hallucinogenic stream of consciousness that owes a debt to Bill Laswell beyond the loops of his that are actually sampled here. Despite all the technology and post-production mixing, the music is born in collective improvisation, and that gives Alias Zone a more fluid feel than most electronica/ambient albums. In particular, flutist Bugg and bassist Lucky Westfall move intuitively through the landscapes of Chris Meyer's digital mix-mastery. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack Waiting for a Film.......2003-03-06

Inhabiting the sub-genre of world-flavored ambient is Alias Zone, a project from a graphic artist. This explains the highly visual flavor of the music, a swirling mix of ambient, world percussion, and spoken word that calls out to be a soundtrack to a film. Lucid Dreams is a film noir of sound. The mood throughout is dreamy and gloaming, reminiscent of twilight. Samples from multiple languages and instruments from multiple countries make it impossible to tie the music down to a particular time and place. This is one of those albums that is a meaningful journey and I highly recommend it.

The opening track, "Phunque" sets the tone with tribal drums and haunting flute. Then the de facto
title track, "I Have Stopped Dreaming," lays down an existential beat poem about new perspectives in consciousness set to ethereal electronics and drums. "Sunday 2AM (Driving)" is simple but engaging with flute and light rhythm laid over djembe.

"Towards the Dawn" is the strongest song of the album, an ethereal trip through luminal time and
space. Over a background of a shortwave broadcast of indeterminate language are bass, flute, hand percussion, and a wonderful assortment of samples from electric guitar to rainforest noises. It is a wonderful song to wake up to on my CD/clock/radio; seven minutes of it and I am thoroughly
    energized.

The tempo increases with "Dervish" as bass is heavier and the flute more vigorous. "Nayeem"
offers Indian Alaap amidst increasingly strident percussion, electric sitar and synths. The height of the energy curve is reached in the funky "Without a Prayer" funky Malaysian vocals are delightfully tweaked and accompanied by driving synth and bass, with the ever-pleasant flute diving and in and
    out.

We cool down with "Dust" and ambient tune that brings back spoken word, this time about a trip to
Morocco. Another very strong track, "The River" is a stirring commentary on American hegemony. We listen first to Lyndon Johnson's famous speech declaring he will not run for re-election in 1968. Then a Vietnam War veteran speaks derisively of his experiences in the "Asian police action" interspersed with excerpts from an Adlai Stevenson speech on American manifest destiny. The deep irony is wonderfully tied together with the guitar and drum accompaniment we are now very familiar with.

Lucid Dreams is aptly named. It asks to be listened to and meditated to and it gives in return a deep experience of what music can be when it is thoughtful and deeply felt. Anyone into intelligent ambient such as Bill Laswell, Axiom of Choice, Brian Eno, Air, and the like, should definitely experience Lucid Dreams. Let us hope that Alias Zone will grant us another tour through their world soon.

    listen:
i'm sure many of you have seen chris meyer's contributions to the yahoo list serve; he's an authentic laswellian, but there's more you should know. chris and his pal's keith snyder, lucky westfall, richard zvonar, and richard bugg have recorded an exceptional disc which in my humble estimate is as good or, if not, better than many of laswell's other productions, i.e. imaginary cuba. chris' disc is entitled `lucid dreams.' you can find it under `alias zone.' it contains nine selections that would be a great addition to anyone's collection. i find the 58 minute recording to be very much like laswell's `city of light.' truth to tell, i like it more than city of light. it has a direction where the latter sometimes drifts. alias zone also reminds me of axiom's significant compilation called `lost in the translation.' lucid dreams contains some spoken word, but it is a subtle, almost subliminal, inclusion. the instrumentals are crisp, unique, and alluring. the disc is definitely what one might call ambient, but i find myself listening with acuity as opposed to slapping the music on for a pleasant background to life around the house after a hard day at work.
each track contains a delightful combination of live and studio recordings as well as sampled performances. alias zone also uses some of bill's sampled material so you fellow laswell fans will feel as if you are in your element. the instrumentation is noteworthy: hyperacoustic flute, synth bass drone, fretless bass, white noise, darbuka, sitar, ambient loops, congas, and other hand percussion. some last observations: the opening song called `phunque' sets the stage for the rest of the cd: a dream which beckons you to return after you have awakened. great bass lines and flute work. if spoken word isn't your scene i guess you can skip `i have stopped dreaming', but in truth it is a sensational doorway to `sunday 2am (driving)' - an infectious jam. `towards the dawn' is reminiscent of cypher 7 or even apc tracks. the fifth cut `dervish' is exactly what you would expect from the title: danceable. a sort of gabrielle roth and the mirrors feel. `nayeem' has a very middle eastern vocal woven through the piece, but the exotic flute, sitar, hand percussion, and skopelitisesque guitar is the song's draw. there is a malaysian male voice in the intro of `without a prayer' but it fades from the forefront allowing for a rhythmic six minutes including a listenable richard bugg flute impov. it reminds me of seven souls without any of burroughs' destractions.
the 7 minute `dust' has that cypher 7 feel - complete with some keyboards, synths, and guitars. there is some spoken word, but it's not really the focus of the piece. the last cut, `the river,' runs about 8 minutes. it is filled with snippets from speeches from lyndon johnson and adlai stevenson for you history buffs; a fellow poetically recalls his viet nam experience, but the main body has a gabrielle roth/apocalypse now sessions/glen velez pulse.
the point of all this is simple: if your ears are bored to tears, buy alias zone's lucid dreams.

The cacophony of Sonic Youth meshed with the spirit of The Doors and the rhythm section of Soundgarden. You have to hear it to believe it.

5 out of 5 stars Proggressive Madness! & Genius! .......2005-11-02

"Lucid Interval" Cephalic Carnage's third release is a mind- blowing musical work.A scorching combination of mangled Death Metal riffage and blistering drum work that have been filtered through a sieve of progressive musicality. What emerges from this smouldering heap of scattershot rhythms and contortionist song structures is a sonic beast of the most erratic yet crushing nature. For the duration of "Lucid Interval" we are assaulted with pummeling yet intricate percussive dexterity , thick waves of guitar wattage that spew forth off-kilter rhythmic bombardment and of-course a fun yet chaotic nature that influences the albums ebb and flow. "Lucid Interval" is unique and intense yet fun , not to mention the freakin' blisterin' production job and what you have here is sumthin' for the entire family. Fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars Grindcore worth buying.......2005-07-24

Ok ill be honest, i used to dismiss grindcore as senseless noise and no-talent bs. I did pretty much the same thing with death metal, (i still maintain that cannibal corpse are a joke.)
      Then i heard this...

Wow, ill hold my hands up this is incredible. Anthro-Emesis, Psuedo and the title track display some of the most insane, yet detailed musicianship ill probably ever hear. John ranks alongside Flo Mournier (cryptopsy) in terms of his ability on the kit in my opinion; the guy must have about 50 arms. The vocals, well what can you expect from a grindcore band but still, i think they work well here. I personally couldnt care what the guy is singing about when you listen to the lightning speed showmanship from the rest of the band.

In terms of the album as as whole, it flows perfectly. SC is the opener, essentially filler although i quite enjoy listening to its main riff for some reason. Fortuitous oddity is completely pointless, to the point that it makes you laugh (count how many times the drums are belted in this beast.) The next 3 tracks are all pretty impressive although Isle of california could have been a bit longer in my opinion. Black metal sabbath which comes slightly later on is a highlight (i cant stand black metal so this bodes well for me as its a complete mockery of the genre.) Cannabism is hillarious. The title track as ive already said is amazing, and would clearly demand a lot of attention when performing. The album draws to a close from thereon in.

There is an unlisted 15th track here which provides something for a bit of light entertainment. Play it, (it is pretty much silent for the first half minute) turn up the volume real loud, and wait whilst sat still until the end. I bet you all soil yourselves.

Get this if you have always thought grindcore was a joke. This will prove you wrong as it did me.

5 out of 5 stars THE WAY METAL WAS INTENDED.......2005-05-27

People, this is simply the way metal was intended right here, Hydrogrind! LUCID INTERVAL is pure destruction, it takes you places, musically, that I bet you've never been. CEPHALIC CARNAGE is the greatest grind/metal band ever to exist, their predecessors are put to shame with this album. I am A huge fan of these guys and have had the pleasure of seeing them play live. Take it from me, if you want quality grindcore purchase LUCID ITERVAL, as well as EXPLOITING DYSFUNCTION, CONFORMING TO ABNORMALITY, and ANOMOLIES. All these pieces of work are easily comparible to the creative works of classical musicians but in the never fading genre of DEATH and GRIND!

      1 out of 5 stars What the...??.......2005-03-10

This album sounds like an annoying coo-coo clock going off in your ear. This isn't metal...it isn't grind....it's just some lame attempt to be "original" and just ends up sounding like this: BING-BONG, KLINK-KLANG, KLONG, BOOM-BOMB, BANG SLANG CRANG, IDDDY-IDDY-EYE-EYE, WHOOOP, WOMP, WAH-WAH. Please save your money and buy an old CARCASS album instead.

3 out of 5 stars it would be better..........2005-02-24

if CC took themselves more seriously. There is waaaaaaaaaaaay too many short bulls*** songs on here. and the cd tries to hard to be weird. there is waaay too many songs on here that you can only here if you listen to in between the songs, you can't to them by going through the tracklisting unless you want to fast forward A LOT. this band needs to cut the crap and start writing actual songs because they have A LOT of talent and will be something special one day when they start taking their music and talent seriously.
