5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Another slept on New Jack Swing Band.......2005-12-06

II D Extreme featured three extremly talented brothers who blew up with their single Cry No More. Unlike many New Jack Swing groups of the early nineties II D Extreme had their strongest material in the form of ballads. Give this one a listen for old times sake.

4 out of 5 stars Certainly Took It II D Extreme.......2003-09-16

II D Extreme (D'Extra Wiley, Randy Gill (Johnny Gill's Brother), and Jermaine Mickey) combines hip-hop production with 1970s soul (Donny Hathaway, L.T.D.), which falls, without doubt, into the New Jack Swing category, at times. Their self-titled debut produced three hits; the lead single "Cry No More," which features Erik Lil Rick White (Keyboards, Programming, Producer, Engineer) and Kevin "K-Jack" Jackson, the second single "Up On The Roof," which is a cover of The Drifters early sixties hit, shows the three vocals in top knotch form, and follow-up third single "Let Me Love You," was produced by The Funky Descendant Hami. The three would go on and have a farely successful career, contributing to 1994's Blankman Soundtrack (did a cover of the Spinners "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love") with Patra, and in 1996 releasing their second album titled, From I Extreme II Another.

I love Up On the Roof! My friends and I think it's one of the best songs ever written. II D Extreme provides some great music for whatever mood you're in. It's good stuff!

Songwriting is the weak link on the second album from II D Extreme, From I Extreme II Another. Lead singer D'Extra Wiley cowrote and coproduced all 15 tracks, and he comes up with neither the tunes nor the words to stand out amid the flood of R&B releases. It's too bad, for he's a terrific singer, using his gospel background to growl and purr with uninhibited emotion. Typical is the album's first single, "If I Knew Then (What I Know Now)," which finds Wiley pushing and pulling at the ballad phrasing and loading it up with layers of synthesizers as if to camouflage the song's lackluster music and predictable lyrics. II D Extreme is better off on dance numbers such as "You Got Me Goin'," where the insistent groove curbs their worse excesses. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Back on the scene.......2006-08-07

For those who are wondering, the guys are back in the studio recording an upcoming album. They are all doing great and you can find them on myspace.

5 out of 5 stars Please bring back 2 d Extreme.......2005-07-15

after seeing them live on BET a few years ago, i Was totally hooked on their sound and style. you just can't find singers like that anymore. randy sounded very mature, Dxtra sounded smoothe and sexy as well as convincing and germane held his own. Together their sound can't be duplicated. i have been feenin for another 2dx record! What is that sexy Dxtra doing nowdays???????

5 out of 5 stars ll D Extreme.......2004-09-21

I had the pleasure of seeing this group perform in Memphis Tennessee over eight years ago and I am still amazed at their perfomance. Dang, those guys can sing their behinds off and it is a shame that some are jealous and attempt to give this album a bad review, because it is the bombdiggity and I am so happy that I was afforded the opportunity to see them in person and also able to get this CD. In my opinion it is a classic and my favorite is "If I Knew Then", it is one of the songs this group sang live and man oh man it was soul gut wrenching. It was beautiful. I hate they didn't get the credit they so richly deserved.

3 out of 5 stars Sincere and Soulful.......2003-09-16

II D Extreme had a decent sophomore effort in From I Extreme II Another, many of those "jeep-soul" releases that came out in the mid-90s contained to many raps, but you won't find that on this collection that mainly consists of slow jams and ballads. One can tell that Wiley, Gill, and Mickey owe a major debt to the classic soul music of the 1970s, but still employ some hip-hop terminology. Though, the focus is more on production oppose to vocals, but the gospel-influenced, big harmonies are still there, even though there are moments that aren't terribly original, they remain soulful throughout the entire album.

5 out of 5 stars Just Talked to D'Extra couple weeks ago.......2002-10-01

Hi, I'm an R&B singer from South Bend, IN. I met D'Extra in Chicago for an American Music Search program. I sang for D and he was really digging me too. He owns his own record company in N. Hollywood, CA for anyone who wants to know. I talked to one of his family members the other day for about 3 hours( I can't mention who). D is my guy and don't worry, he's doing just fine. Much love D,

4 out of 5 stars unbelievable!.......2005-07-13

Oh my gosh! Those guys can really sing! Why is it so hard to find their music or everybody is out of stock. All i can say is, i saw them some time ago in houston and they brought the civic center down! girls were screaming for Dxtra the entire concert, He is a cutie! but one question? Where the hell are they now? Someome told me Randy was going solo and Dxtra is producing other people. I wish they could make at least one more cd, because people just don't sang with feelings any more.

4 out of 5 stars II D Extreme's Biggest Hit!.......2003-09-16

"Cry No More," was the first released single from II D Extreme's self-titled debut, striking no. 48 on the billboard hot 100, and a very good no. 6 on the R&B singles and tracks chart. It remains, and will forever be the biggest hit the threesome ever had (D'Extra Wiley, Randy Gill (Johnny Gill's brother) and Jermaine Mickey), one can clearly hear the 1970's soul music over the hip-hop/new jack ballad produced track (similair sounds to The Rude Boys (ballads) Real Seduction and Yours Truly). The trio's vocals never soared better.
