5 out of 5 stars Amid fine work, a new star!.......2004-09-28

Baird, Russell and Van Buskirk give fine performances in a splendid
program, but tenor Frederick Urrey [his Foster recording debut?] is a sensation! A glorious voice, with a perfect command of style in
operatic, ballad, ensemble and even comic scenes, his Melinda May is breathtaking, his Beautiful Dreamer is the best on records, his
duets charm and his drunken husband is a gas! He has it all!! In my 25 years of total immersion in Foster and his era, I have never
even dreamt of hearing an artist of such stature. Foster was said to have a fine voice and to sing his music better than any other.
I pray we now hear more of SF's songs as he must have sung them!

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Foster Would Be Proud.......2004-02-26

Linda Russell is a remarkable woman. I have every CD she has done and I've never been disappointed in the high quality recordings she releases. I consider her every bit of an historian as the authors of history books.
This collection of Stephen Foster tunes, one of two that Russell has partaken in, is a rousing collection of the musical sounds of the mid-19th century. Soprano Julianne Baird and tenor Frederick Urrey join in with Ms. Russell's alto vocals to make a truly remarkable ensemble (including the musicians playing the mountain dulcimer, fortepiano, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, recorder, and accordion - all on authentic antique instruments). All combined show off the genius that Stephen Foster was - the 19th century's top songwriter who wrote music for ALL time, not just his time.
But if it wasn't for the musical reenactors (on CD at least) of Russell and company many of these long lost gems might have stayed hidden, sadly unheard. Some choral music, a feel of opera, a bit of traditional folk all mixed together to make what I feel is an authentic piece of musical history.
Here's hoping that Linda Russell and friends continue in the making of traditional music - Christmas and popular.
Ms. Russell, do you ever tour? We'd love to see you here in Michigan!

5 out of 5 stars Foster at his simple best.......2002-01-22

What a delicious surprise this little album is, and from the ..... date, it appears to have been around for a few seasons, but is utterly new to me. I am a Julianne Baird fan from the get-go, but was pleasantly taken aback at her appearance on an album of American songs with folk balladeer Linda Russell (who plays dulcimers, mountain fiddles and all manner of country instruments and sings with the earthy texture of Judy Collins). But as usual Baird finds a way to integrate her own exquisite sensibilities and artistry into the assignment and makes a touching case for the simple and heart-rending Foster tunes--this is, after all, "early music" in which she excels--American "Early Music." Tenor Fred Urrey is another find and he likewise blends wonderfully into the surroundings. In fact, the three diverse artists hit their stride in a haunting trio rendition of Old Black Joe. Keyboard and string instruments have a ghostly and authentic ring to them as well. indeed, after the pompous and overblown Foster CDs of better-known opera singers in the bins today, this is so welcome. A treasure!
    Get it today.

    4 out of 5 stars Well-rounded and convincing.......2000-10-27

This is an excellent rendition of Stephen Foster's songs, capitalizing on the duality inherent in the repertoire: the beautiful parlor ballads and the rowdy folk-inspired tunes. Especially remarkable is the fact that the performers bring to the music the "early music" sensibility (Julianne Baird is renowned as a performer of Elizabethan lutesongs)--this sensibility urges the performers to be as historically accurate as possible, performing on original/reproduction instruments. Also of note is the fact that it is a collaboration between classical and folk musicians: soprano, alto, tenor, fortepiano, fiddle, mountain and hammered dulcimers, harmonica, recorder, and accordian. Linda Russell (alto, mountain dulcimer) is lyrical and moving with her "folkie" voice, perfectly complementing the other "cultivated" voices and grounding them on the occasions they come together in poignant harmony.

I only wish that they had incorporated a 19th c. parlor guitar to round out the ballads. Overall, however, one can well imagine that this is indeed the way the music sounded. As one of America's first "popular song" writers, the present performers succeed in doing him justice by incorporating many styles of 19th c. popular musics, avoiding the anachronistic "bluegrass" sound often used in performances of this repertoire, and never succumbing to waves of overly self-indulgent nostalgia.

        Album Description

BRAND NEW RECORDINGS! A unique and utterly delightful program of rarely-heard orchestral works by rarely-heard British composers! Meet, for example, Cecil Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960), mentored by Ferruccio Busoni, student of Ralph Vaughan Williams, friends with Arthur Bliss and Sir Adrian Boult. Gibbs's choral works and songs were once widely known in Britain, and the slow waltz "Dusk" from the Fancy Dress suite recorded here was virtually a pop hit on the BBC in the late 1940s and '50s.

More than practically any other African musician, King Sunny Ade has enjoyed unparalleled longevity, both at home and with Western music fans. Born into Nigerian royalty (the "King" is not merely a courtesy title), he embarked upon his chosen career path early, incorporating traditional rhythms and percussion, chilled-out vocals, sinuous bass lines, and especially the wacked-out, psychedelic guitar of Bob Ohiri. During the '60s and '70s, Ade's mature sound slowly evolved; although he was years away from an international breakthrough, his trademark stylistic markers were already in place, hastening him toward historic doings. The bandleader's high, nasal voice, wreathed in talking drums and shakers, echoed by a call-and-response choir, reflected Yoruba folkways along with hints of Muslim and Christian religious and secular music. By now, Ade's songs had become longer and more subtle; many of his intricate, gradually unfolding sets of themes and variations were clocking in at twenty minutes-plus on record and over an hour live. As on Shanachie's excellent Best of the Classic Years (2003), these tunes, although unquestionably landmark recordings, have hardly been heard outside of the maestro's homeland. They constitute a crucial document of Ade's first flush of local fame, and if the sound quality is slightly over-resonant, it is also remarkably vivid and clear. --Christina Roden

Pure, powerful, and soul-stirring, Gospel Radio Gems marks a high point in Doyle Lawson's storied career. The intricate four-part harmonies are in capable hands, backed only by Lawson's delicate acoustic guitar. Recording completely live using just two microphones, Lawson (lead), Barry Scott (tenor), Barry Abernathy (baritone), and Dale Perry (bass) vibrantly recreate the gospel radio shows that graced countless Southern airwaves in days gone by. The one-guitar format gives ample room for the vocals to shine, and they glow with warmth, joy, and passion. Lawson wisely avoids rehashing the standard gospel repertoire. More than an homage to the great gospel quartets of country's past--the Brown's Ferry Four, the Swanee River Boys, and the Jordanaires among them--this album showcases one of the great gospel quartets of country's present. --Marc Greilsamer

I've been a fan of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver for years. In my opinion, they are consistently the best Bluegrass-Gospel group in the business. I've always enjoyed Doyle Lawson's diversity. Several years ago, he and his group recorded an all-a cappella album that was fantastic. I didn't think it could ever be topped. It has been topped. Gospel Radio Gems is a stroke of genius. Doyle Lawson has captured the sound of rural, southern gospel as heard over radio in the 40's and 50's. With only a guitar keeping rhythm, 14 wonderful songs are shared with us. Most of the songs were new to me, yet had the "old sound" I love. Thanks D.L. and Quicksilver for a wonderful project.

5 out of 5 stars Great old time gospel quartet CD!!.......1999-02-08

I just purchased this CD and love it. It hearkens back to the days of gospel radio, pure and unvarnished. The technical production is superb and the harmonies very tight. This is a fun CD!

5 out of 5 stars True gospel by the best in the business.......1999-01-30

Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver is my favorite bluegrass group, and the reason they are my favorite is because of their vocals, and that is what this album right here is all about "Vocal harmony". I love this cd because of the songs and in the way that they are done. The old time singing in gospel music is gone and that is why this cd is so refreshing. The vocals here are, as with any lawson project, "simply the best" and this is the way gospel music should sound. This music sounds like it came right out of a small mountain country chruch and that's the way I like it. If you love true country gospel music, this is the one to buy.

Following in the footsteps of two earlier Doo Wop Boxes--the first of which sold enough to earn a gold record--comes a third set of four CDs dedicated to the street-corner form. Discs one and two collect hits and near-misses that didn't make the cut for the previous volumes. The fact that many of these recordings--including the Cadets' whacked-out "Stranded in the Jungle," the Charts' barely less goofball "Zoop," the Jaguars' lovely nod to Sinatra on "The Way You Look Tonight," and Lee Andrews and the Hearts' gorgeous "Try the Impossible"--stand up to the selections on volumes one and two makes a grand case for the music's depth. (As for the odd embarrassing whitewash such as the 3 Friends' "Blanche," well, someone likes it.)

An interesting twist finds the third disc filled with favorites chosen by the likes of Keith Richards, George Carlin, and Art and Aaron Neville, while the final CD collects two dozen modern tracks that often stretch the boundaries of tribute. Still, it's fitting that the unstoppable a cappella group the Persuasions' 1977 "Looking for an Echo" ends the box. Along with its predecessors, Doo Wop Box III affirms that this blissful strain of American music indeed resonates 50 years after its development. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars The Weakest Link In The Chain.......2004-11-01

Doo Wop Box #3 has its moments - there are many really good tunes on it - but it falls far short of the first two sets, which were excellent. Disc 3 contains a couple of tunes that were featured in the first 2 sets but otherwise has some really scarce tunes. Disc 4 in this set is a complete waste of time and is suitable for use as a frisbee or coaster. Rhino really dropped the ball with this set. Buy the other two sets before investing in this.

3 out of 5 stars The Weakest Link Of The Three.......2004-10-16

This set was a disappointment after the first two. I just didn't think that the set was put together that well. Many of the songs were picked by opinions that Doo Wop "experts" said needed to be in a box. It has its moments, but overall is not as strong as the first two. Make sure you get them before this one. This is definately a set to finish the collection from Rhino. Once again, the sound is great, as Rhino products are always top sounding (at least the ones I own).

5 out of 5 stars Better than its current rating indicates.......2003-05-15

...While it's true that "The Doo Wop Box III" is not quite as consistent as "Box I" and "Box II," it's still an amazing compilation. I, for one, am glad that Rhino decided to compile a disc of modern doo-wop to show that the form isn't just a dead relic of the distant past. Doo-wop fans who don't know about The Persuasions are missing out on some great music. They certainly deserve to be included in a set like this. (Though I wouldn't necessarily have picked "Looking For an Echo" to represent them.) Doo-wop doesn't HAVE to come from the 1950s or 60s to be "pure." Just listen to the Neville Brothers' version of "We Belong Together." You're telling me that's not gorgeous, glorious music? Get real!

My only quibble with this set is that it includes a handful of tracks I already owned from the previous DWB sets. But that's such a minor detail that it hardly seems to matter. Not when it's offset by the inclusion of such mindbending tracks as "Newly Wed" by the Orchids -- which I never would have found had it not been for this set.

          4 out of 5 stars perfect? No....still great? Yes.......2003-03-24

Most people will compare this with the fabulous box sets I and II, unfortunately. This set doesn't have quite the sparkle of the first two, but is still great. I think Rhino should be complimented, but derided, for trying something a little different in this third offering. Regarding Disc 3 (entertainment figures' picks), the intriguing liner notes put their choices into good perspective. It seems Disc 4 ("modern" doo wop) offends a lot of people, but I think it's a fun disc. It clearly shows doo wop's pervasive influence on pop music. And it's obvious the modern groups are performing with love for the genre, and not in comic parody. A solid B+ , warranting any doo wop fan's purchase.

          3 out of 5 stars 3 Clean closets and 1 dirty trick!.......2001-12-20

I wish that I could give this collection more stars. Boxes 1 and 2 were incredible, but it sounds like Rhino is really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Discs 1 and 2 are decent, 3 other than repeating a couple of songs available on the first 2 boxes (hello people! who is your target buyer? people who already own boxes 1 and 2 perhaps?....duh). Disc 4 was a remarkale misstep, taking Doo Wop out of the 'classic' venue and transporting it into the 'modern' age. It's nothing short of a small miracle that the majority of songs do pull it off (yes it is THAT "Whole Lotta Love" and THAT "Eye of the Tiger" in Doo Wop format). Still, for the price of this box set, getting songs that I already had owned (regardless of the star's picks) and a whole cd of 'interpretations' of Doo Wop standards was a sad affair and Rhino is a better lable than to pull this on a listener. You got me this time... if there is a Doo Wop Box 4 (and I doubt it) please don't trick me again.
