Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
I'm fascinating.

A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

Four Tops in the early 80's.......2004-04-23

I have one of the original albums which features
When She Was My Girl, Tonight I'm Gonna Love You All Over, Don't Walk Away, Dream On, All I Do, I'll Never Ever Leave Again and a few others. The name of the album is Tonight!. The thing is it's excellent music but it's too much of the same thing. The songs are all too similar. But it is worth getting if you are a FOur Tops fan or a fan of early 80's music.

Great summation of short period of Tops' career.......2003-03-04

In 1981 the Tops signed with Casablanca for a two album deal. While their tenure at Casablanca was short, both albums were among their strongest ever. The highlights are all found here: the retro smash "When She Was My Girl," the bouncy "One More Mountain Left To Climb" and Nobody's Gonna Love You" (co-written by lead singer Levi Stubbs), the romantic "Tonight I'm Gonna Love You All Over," and the wedding staple "I Believe In You And Me" (Levi's performance buries Whitney Houston's hit version). A bonus cut (not on either of the original two albums) is the sassy Grease 2 theme "Back To School Again." It's the only redeeming component of that film.

When I interviewed Four Tops member Duke Fakir, he told me this collection was one of the few Tops' cds that he plays in his car. It is easy to see why: When She Was My Girl is the Tops at their most melodic!

Superb soul.......2001-10-09

When other soul acts were "selling out" by coming up with dubious inferior disco tracks (the Spinners, Diana Ross, etc etc), the fabulous Four Tops stuck by their principles and came up with 2 excellent soulful albums for Casablanca Records. The best of that material is excellently remastered for this CD, which also includes the dire "Back to school again". Maybe these aren't the classics from the Motown era, but the Four Tops put in brilliant performances on quality songs. The only problem is that it would have been better to have the whole of the 2 Casablanca albums released, not just a selection of tracks.

This one's a sleeper!.......2000-09-12

Overall, the songs on this CD are mediocre at best, with the exception of "When She Was My Girl" and "Back To School Again", from the motion picture "Grease 2". Frankly, the majority of the other songs put me to sleep, which is why I prefer the 'Tops music from the Motown and Dunhill/ABC eras. Pass on this one for the most part.

Real Patriotism Through Extraordinary Music.......2003-02-26

In the wake of considerable ersatz patriotism following 9/11, I have become sensitive to what I consider to be acts of true patriotism. Recording these very American songs, with a tremendous commitment to showing them in their most pristine and revealing light, is one of those, perhaps small, acts of patriotism that are profound in their ability to show the best of the United States of America. I used the word "commitment" in the above sentence because that is the underlying theme of this entire venture. Ms. Danton sings with amazing clarity of voice and tremendous enthusiasm for the material. Each of these songs is a minor masterpiece, as presented, and the whole album is captivating and deeply compelling. These songs stay with you. I find myself humming the melodies for days. They are, indeed, songs many of us grew up with or have heard for years. So there you have it: 5 stars for the material, 5 stars for the performances and 5 stars for the recording quality.

A slim volume of Gershwin's own arrangements of his popular songs exists, and has been recorded by many pianists. Unfortunately, these arrangements exist for only a scant few of Gershwin's songs, and they are rather abbreviated and dare I say it? Unsatisfying. Enter Jack Gibbons. Mr. Gibbons has meticulously researched George Gershwin's own playing of these pieces, from old radio shows, movie soundtracks, and other archival sources and he plays them exactly the way the composer did. He kids you not about "authentic". This is about as close as you can get to the source, and the recorded sound is spectacular. Bravo!
