Is there a more perfect musical metaphor for Nip/Tuck's themes of deeper-than-skin neuroses and narcissistic surgical reinvention than the chic chimera of a club remix? Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden, the dub savants behind contemporary club successes that include Andain's "Beautiful Things", Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes" and Sarah McLachlan's "Fallen," conjur up a nigh-seamless soundscape of haunting textures and percolating beats here, forcefully pushing the envelope of what a smart song-score can be in the bargain. Their rhythmic reinvention of The Engine Room's theme for the show, "A Perfect Lie," sets the cynical, haunting tone, with Gabriel and Dresden employing a sensibility that's both more mature and austere than their typical club work. G&D infuse that consistently entrancing sensibility to material as diverse as the cool-jazz of "Angels" by Wax Poetic/Norah Jones, Daniel Ash's stripped-down reinvention of the standard "Fever" and the retro-disco of Client's "Price of Love." If it's a triumph of style over substance, it's one that musically underscores the show's similar themes with grace and ever-detached elegance. --Jerry McCulley

Missing Song.......2007-07-29
A good CD but I'm wondering who is doing the cover of "Wicked Game?" I believe it is the group Giant Drag, but with 57 covers of that song it's hard to tell.
The music fits well with the show and stands alone pretty well also.
Good CD.......2007-07-10
I did enjoy this CD but not all of the music was as it was on the show.
Nip/tuck music CD.......2007-03-09
Again, I was a bit dissapointed but most of the songs are pretty good. However, I found that downloading the indivdual songs I like worked better for me.
nip/tuck.......2007-01-12
The soundtrack on the TV show are typically a different style than what is on the CD. It wasn't what I had expected.
Love It.......2007-01-10
I don't remember what episode of Nip/Tuck I was watching when it hit me that the music for this show is awesome! There was just some really sexy song playing, I think it may have been "Fever," and I immediately got on iTunes and bought this CD. I'm so glad I did! The sound is very recognizeable, for fans of the show. Also, if you're a fan of the Grey's Anatomy soundtracks you will like this - the sound is very similar - just slightly more edgy and hot, in my opinion. That makes sense, though, because in a way Nip/Tuck is more edgy than Grey's Anatomy, and more edgy than most shows out there on television, I guess.
My favorite tracks:
-So Damn Beautiful
-Fever
-Lonley
-Pride
If you buy the version on iTunes, it comes with a bonus track, "Tracking Treasure Down" by Gabriel & Dresden. I love this song the most out of all of them on the album, I think. With the iTunes version you also get a free podcast that tells about the making of the theme song "A Perfect Lie."
Five Stars!!

Awesome.......2006-08-18
I had forgotten how wonderful they sound, and have really enjoyed rekindling an old feeling.
One word - amazing.......2006-07-25
Tuck and Patti are one of the best duos every to record music together. Tuck's fluid jazz guitar coupled with Patti's smooth, melodious voice is truly something special.
Their version of Cindy Lauper's "Time after Time" is beautiful and "Take My Breath Away" does just that every time I hear it.
If you've never heard of T&P or have only heard one or two of their songs, pick up this CD ... it's well worth it.
The best album in my iTunes library.......2005-02-08
The music is soothing, rhythmic and sophisticated. I just can't get enough of it. My favorite tracks are Better Than Anything and Europa (indeed it is better than Santana's). This album has truly blown my mind and taken my breath away ... get it.
Simplicity is Superb.......2005-01-29
Tuck & Patti offer versions of songs that are simple, clean, pure, and inspiring. I previously enjoyed "As Time Goes By," but after listening to this version, I have a new favorite rendition. "Time After Time" also is a clean, crisp alternative. "Takes My Breath Away" leaves you hanging on each note as it is played simply, cleanly, and warmly.
Time after time it just gets better..........2003-05-12
If you've not come across this duo before, it's time you spread your wings! Who could have imagined that the simplicity of a guitar+vocal duo could capture such a phenomenal range of dynamics and emotional responses? You will melt when you hear 'Take My Breath Away' and, as other reviewers have said, 'Time After Time' (the Cyndi Lauper version, not the old jazz standard) is streets ahead of the original. Stunning guitar work and soulful singing. Buy this - you have no excuse!

While unaccompanied jazz guitar can quickly become tedious, Tuck Andress funk-inspired, footloose approach was immediately arresting. Add Patti Cathcart's soul-inflected vocal to the mix, and the result is a disc that very quickly became something of a classic in modern jazz vocal records. While many jazz discs can boast fine musicianship, few have this much personality. Few could take two songs from the Bob Dorough canon ("I've Got Just About Everything" and "Better Than Anything") and make them their own. But that is the secret of this disc--the winning combination of instrumental chops and a personal, individual stamp on the tunes themselves. --Skip Heller
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for any lover, singer, guitarist.......2005-01-24
I found this album from listened to the original VH-1 late at night. There was a video of the Cyndi Lauper tune "Time After Time" that was captivating. I had to rush out and buy this album and became amazed at its depth.
Patty is not your typical jazz singer; she has much more gospel in her soul. A deep, throaty voice that has warmth and is still flexible. When she sings, her delivery is honest. Still, she has the ability to skitter about and improv as she sings.
Tuck is unbelievable. He has developed this style that combines walking bass, chordal changes and lead playing at the same time. Even better, he varies his arrangement chorus by chorus, so the accompaniment never gets stale.
Put them together and you have music that is overtly romantic, improvised, florid without being busy and real. Incredible.
This is their best album, in my opinion.
I learned a lot about how to play bass from listening to Tuck's line on "I've Got Just about Everything" as he plays it on guitar.
Patty's version of "My Romance" is definitive, even if she has to change the lyric ("I must have one soft guitar" provides the clue to the romance shared between Tuck and Patty.)
But the best tune remains "Time After Time." Tuck and Patty change this from a pop song to a gospel anthem, every bit as significant as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You've Got A Friend."
I'll echo the comments of others...get a date and see Tuck and Patty live. I've been twice. Tuck continues to make the impossible seem normal, while Patty sings her heart out, and tears yours up at the same time. I've seen her sing this entire Tears of Joy album WITHOUT stopping, just scatting her way from one tune to set up the tempo of the next.
Overwhelmed.......2003-10-11
I am overwhelmed by this album. It is not just music, it is an experience! They have a way of letting their music resonate within one's being. I find myself not just listening but participating, as if the music was a part of me. Patti's voice is such an awesome instrument brilliantly caressing notes with deep emotion. Tuck's guitar playing leaves me speechless.
I was once asked a hypothetical question: if you were stranded on an island and could only have one CD which would it be? - this was the first that came to mind.
Awesome Duo.......2003-06-25
In the early 90s I attended a free T&P concert at the Central Park Zoo (I am not making this up). I had never heard of them before. It was one of those moments you remember all your life. The evening was one of those rare ones in NYC during summer - cool and fresh. It was a small crowd, unlike the crazed fests that big-name stars draw. Everyone was relaxed, just enjoying the moment. Lying on the grass, staring at the Fifth Avenue skyline, watching the seals bop abt in their pool, and listening to some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. And "laughing with the band" when a NYC killer wasp went after Tuck. I've never done drugs, but that evening, I was high. On T&P. Wonderful experience. Thanks to both for something beautiful. I've since bought all of their CDs, and there isn't one that doesn't have four songs you want to hear forever.
amazing!.......2003-04-28
The moment I heard this CD,I got very relaxed. And this also makes me feel alive. This is a song of love. This CD will surely light up your life. These two musicians are really talented!!
Intimate Jazz-Inflected Guitar and THAT Voice.......2003-04-15
Growing up in Palo Alto in the 70's and early 80's, I saw Tuck and Patti frequently perform their set on the mezzanine of the Varsity Theatre, a wonderful venue now sadly closed. Being a kid in the age of the Power Guitar, I wasn't very musically sophisticated, but they were absolutely arresting. If you could muscle your way into the room, and find a place to sit down in the usually standing-room-only crowd, you'd be drawn into the twin arms of Tuck Andress' playful guitar and Patti's low, rich voice. It was an awful lot like being kissed.
I didn't actually own a Tuck and Patti record until college. After all, they were right down the street! This was the first one I bought. Listening to it all these years later, it's like coming home.
Standouts for me were the title track "Tears of Joy", because it showcases Tuck's virtuosity--he's rhythm, brass and guitar all at once--and their lovely cover of the Rogers and Hart favorite "My Romance", which is like having Patti sing you to dreamland.
This is a great introduction to this duo, and I urge you also to move heaven and earth to see them live, if you can.

Album Description
Over a career of Jazz, R&B and crossover recordings, husband and wife duo Tuck & Patti have produced a remarkable amount of music, especially considering that they rely on the textures of only guitar and voice. Having built their reputation on their sublime interpretations of classic songs from all genres, the duo again explores this approach, but this time with a little something extra: The addition of keyboardist and string arranger Frank Martin and cellist Joseph Herbert on four songs. Originally the recording was conceived as a special project intended for release only in Japan and Southeast Asia, however, soon after it was released everyone wanted a copy. "A Gift Of Love" covers album material made famous by the Drifters, Elvis Presley, Billy Joel, Minnie Riperton, Freddie Mercury and many more. Ten tracks in all.

Great CD. Thanks for the prompt delivery
Soulful, Mellow, Spiritual, Romantic....Perfection!.......2005-11-08
I have been a follower of Tuck and Patti's musical career for years. Due to budget contraints and the exorbitant prices of CDs, I am very selective when it comes to adding CDs to my collection. However, this CD is one of their best. I would also include, what I believe was their first CD, "Dream." That particular CD is another absolute gem that I insist you must add to your collection! In "Gift of Love," there is NOT a single bad track in this beautifully, well-crafted CD. Patti, an amazing songress along with Tuck, a masterful, acoustical guitarist, who take songs you've heard a thousand times on the radio and give it a totally fresh intrepretation. I must say here I am a bit bewildered as to why this CD was labeled to contain "illicit lyrics." Like what are they talking about??? I played this CD three times, and I did not hear anything remotely salacious. I have heard far more offensive lyrics from Beyonce, Bridget Spears and Janet Jackson. Please, do not allow this to prevent you from buying this CD. I swear you will find nothing offensive about it. It's one of those CDs you would want to hear at home while siping a glass of your favorite wine or sharing a romantic dinner with that special someone.

better with Patti.......2006-11-26
I first heard of this artist on the Tuck and Patti albums. I was very impressed. However Tuck by himself is missing some of the soulfulness that he has when he plays with her. Technically he is very good but he seems to try to do too much on some songs. Sometimes less is more. Some of the material on this CD is very good (Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Body and Soul) but sometimes it sounds like lots of notes for the sake of more notes. The lack of continuity makes it difficult for me to put it on and play it without skipping a few tracks. I guess the title is appropriate. So if that is what you are looking for....
If Will Ackerman or Alex De Grassi played jazz..........2000-06-20
... it would probably sound a lot like this. If you dig the Windham Hill crowd, you'll love this CD (seriously-- Windham Hill fans should buy it right now). However, if, like me, you STRONGLY prefer John Fahey's american-primative sound to Ackerman's new age sound, steer clear of this one. In jazz terms, if you love Wes Montgomery and can't stand Pat Metheny, you probably won't be as enthusiastic about this disc as other reviewers.
There is a frightening tendency among music (particularly guitar) fans to praise anyone who shows technical proficiency, which Tuck certainly does. However, I find most of Tuck's music a bit academic and antiseptic. This album has a few true high points. "Manonosh" and "Louie Louie" show that when Tuck really wants to, he can keep up with the best. I also found his rendition of Bonfa's classic, "Manha de Carnival" a somewhat refreshing new take on the track (although I prefer Sandy Bull's more elaborate interpretation on the highly recommended "Re-Inventions"). However, I am not as impressed by Tuck's pop stuff. When Coltrane covered "My Favorite Things," it was a revelation. When Andress covered "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," it sounded cheesy. Most disappointing was Andress' attempted opus, "Grooves of Joy," which ended up sounding like a bunch of disparate pieces of varied styles spliced together without any transition or sense of overall composition, although individually, the parts were interesting, which was why I found it so disappointing. For a finger style jazz artist capable of pulling something like that off, I would suggest Adrian Legg (particularly "Guitars and Other Cathedrals," on which the title track actually does pull together somewhat disparate strands into a tight composition, but be ware, Legg also plays a lot of bluegrass-type stuff that may not be to everyone's liking. Also, check out Preston Reed). Finally, if you are really interested in a mind-blowing technique combining melody and bass lines played at the same time, check out Charlie Hunter, who plays an 8-string guitar (3 bass strings, 5 guitar strings) allowing him to play bass lines and melody at the same time, and even mimic a Hammond almost flawlessly.
Amazing artistry and technique-not to be missed........1999-08-06
We had the opportunity to witness this talent first hand. Fortunately,Tuck & Patti performed in our small town this spring. They were amazing and breathtaking.Tuck's styling and versitility on the guitar is unbelievable and under appreciated. And Patti's vocal range and styling was truly unique. I can only hope to experience this again. Until then, this recording (and other from the duo) will have to suffice. Definitely worth having in your collection if you appreciate guitar artistry.
An incredible guitar virtuoso!.......1999-06-01
It doesn't matter if you play guitar or just appreciate good guitar music, this CD is essential. Tuck, the one-man-band-Andress plays jazz standards, funk and popular music without missing a beat. His ability to play rhythm, bass lines and the melody AT THE SAME TIME is simply unreal; and although each song is technically amazing, he never loses touch with what is most important to the song - it's individuality.
THE guitar album for guitarists.......1999-05-13
No guitar music collection can be complete without this one. Mr.Andress's L-35 takes on that jeckle-and-hyde-and-whatever-you-may-want-to-call-it guises. The monotony that is sometimes associated with such solo outings is simply non-exsistant. This is the ultimate one man orchestra, come ballads, funk, swing, latin.... whatever.
Even after years of listening to this set, I haven't figured out how he keeps that bass line going along with the lead on a single take. And the Windhamhill's sound is good. Just get it.

Lovely.......2006-10-24
I was introduced to Tuck & Patti by a friend /talented jazz musician and it's one of the best additions made to my diverse music collection.
Tuck & Patti have the wholesome quality of next door neighbors who hold the town's annual block parties. While block parties are an old-fashioned, outdated concept, so is the simple and pure soul music music the two create. But man, doesn't one miss those days... lucky for us listeners, Tuck and Patti revive the beauty not heard since the 1920's through one hell of a talented guitar player and an amazing vocalist. So, have a seat in an old, comfy, over-sized sofa, prepare a cup of hot, earl gray tea and put in their album.
Being a singer for a few years, I confess that I've tried to sing along to the first track (and my favorite), "Comfort Me." To those who try doing the same, I bid them good luck. Patti's vocals are seemingly simple; but, the combination of her range and scatting throughout the songs are so complex that while it makes it great for listening, trying to sing along is like a jazz theory course all over again. As they say, though, the sign of a skilled performer is making it all seem effortless (and Patti certainly does that!)
I also suggest listening to the lyrics, since this album was written with political commentary and other contemporary issues in mind. This makes "Chocolate Moment" especially pertinent to today's times, despite general themes of love, hope, tolerance and understanding.
While I know little about the guitar, one doesn't have to in order to appreciate Tuck's contributions. With a soft, folksey, jazzy edge, Tuck compliments Patti's voice perfectly-- he's very low-key, honest, and a graceful player.
One of the things I appreciate most about these two is the amount of respect they show each other while performing. Despite Patti possessing a very commanding voice and Tuck possessing the skills to easily outshine a 12-piece band, both actually listen to the other. Neither Tuck nor Patti out-perform the other and in that, genuinely convey the love about which Patti sings. Clearly, the two are at ease with each other which emanates to the listener. The end product is a great, relaxing, stress-free album.
While each song is certainly unique, the style between songs will not vary greatly-- unlike some artists, you're not going to get loud, fast-paced songs and then mellow the next track. All tracks provide the same sweet quality. In fact, each of the tracks in the album won't provide the listener with a good, in-depth understanding of Tuck and Patti because of the many layers between songs. As a plus, you will forever identify a Tuck & Patti song when you hear it regardless of which album you select. As a con, many might think all songs are too much the same. The more one listens, though, the more the listener discovers variety between the albums.
"Chocolate Moment" is great for anyone with taste akin to Tracy Chapman, Eric Clapton (unplugged), Anota O'Day or Nancy King.
A 6-string orchestra.......2004-12-27
When it comes to emulating a jazz quartet with just six strings, two hands, and a volume pedal, Tuck Andress is in a class by himself. He can juggle swinging bass lines, percussive clusters, funky gospel riffs, baroque counterpoint, and serpentine melodies with ease. For 20 years, Andress has been providing solo-guitar accompaniment for Patti Cathcart -- vocalist extraordinaire and a self-confessed musical tyrant -- and in the process, he's polished his fingerstyle technique to an improbable level of brilliance. On Chocolate Moment, Andress sounds more relaxed than ever, and his complex orchestral parts benefit from the laid-back vibe. The tones he draws from his '53 Gibson L-5 archtop (which is tricked out with active electronics, run through outboard EQs for more top-end boost, and recorded direct to hard disk) are as delicate and transparent as Waterford crystal. Whether you'd describe them as awesomely full-spectrum or brutally clinical is a matter of debate, but his harmonic wizardry is not.
best cd ever.......2003-01-09
this is the best tuck and patti cd ever.once again,it is all orginal, showcasing the evolutionary musical talents of patti cathcart.the whole cd is inspired by the tragic events of 9/11.
it is uplifting,at times quiet, and a vehicle for tuck andress to strut his stuff.how just two people can fill your mind and ears is incredible.the dynamic duo of jazz has done it again!

Excellent A Capella Vocals.......2006-08-02
For the most part, this album is a capella, and the a capella tracks are definitely the best of the bunch. All three women's singing is in top form and they really deliver with this release.
The standout track, "Stitch in Time", is a very traditional sounding song about a woman who, fed up with her abusive husband's alcoholism, ties him to the bed and beats him up with various kitchen implements. It's an excellent song!
awesome music, unforgettable tunes.......2003-04-27
I was lucky to have seen Maddy Prior and "the girls" in Leuven, Belgium at a folk music festival, and I fell in love with their music. The vocal harmony is hauntingly beautiful! Their version of C. lauper's "True Colors" brings tears to my eyes. Their modern take on some traditional English folk songs (the latter half of the CD) is worth buying the CD for. Bottom line: worth every cent--love it, love it, love it!

Weird, But With a Sense of Humor.......2006-03-05
Q: How do you get an electric guitarist to stop playing?
A: Put some sheet music in front of him.
Steven Mackey proves this old saw wrong. The electric guitar is emblematic to his music, as the organ is to Olivier Messiaen or the shakuhachi is to Toru Takemitsu. Not that the instrument features in all pieces on this album: in fact, only Tuck and Roll is a concerto written for and around the electric guitar. But all of Steven Mackey's music is influenced by his relationship to the electric guitar and by the mindset that goes with it, even when it is written for other instruments.
What is specific about the electric guitar is not that its player doesn't have to read scores. Actually, the interpreter will have to be musically articulate if he is to play on Mackey's compositions, which are well-thought pieces that use the classical orchestra to its full potential. Playing along classical instruments requires a listening quality and an alertness to melodic variations which are very different from the skills honed in a rock band, where it is all about keeping the beat. But the spirit of the instrument somehow remains. Playing the electric guitar involves an affinity to rhythm and a way to strike a note that is very different from other instruments. Even the classical guitar, still that oddpiece in classical music formations, requires a very different technique and produces a radically distinct atmosphere.
The essence of the electric guitar can be summed up by the very term that Steven Mackey uses to define his music: "wacky," or weird, but with a sense of humor. It is self-absorbed and does not pay much attention to what goes on around it. It finds newness through repetition, and can revisit the same passage over and again in order to strike the right chord. In the absence of the drums, its disciplining device, it can really go mad and lose all sense of proportion in its exploration of musical boundaries. But its engrossing quality sometimes yields way to a strange modesty, as if the guitarist were conscious of his precarious status in a formation that maintains him at the outskirt of its script. The guitar's coruscating humor can then be turned against itself, in a self-deprecating mode.
Mackey's wackiness finds ways in its scores or its performances in expressions that test the limits of the classical establishment. Maverick interpreters and crossover artists have accustomed us to unbridled displays of originality, so the appearance of the guitarist dressed in black leather and donning a red instrument has lost much of its potential to provoke and to unsettle. But the appearance on the stage of a pizza delivery man during the performance of Eating Greens, that has a pizza delivered to the principal bass, never fails to elicit strong reactions, mostly favorable, as if the audience felt the urge to be reminded of the artificial nature of the show.
Erkki-Sven Tuur is another composer who also wrote for the electric guitar and whose work I highly recommend.
Excellent.......2002-10-04
As an amateur composer and music major, I found this album intriguing. A classmate of mine brought the album into a composition class to play for us, and the ideas Mackey uses are absolutely brilliant. He blends different genres together to create music that would please most any classical fan.
disappointing.......2002-02-19
The guitar concerto has its moments, and they are very reminiscent of something else--I think "Future Legend" from David Bowie's "Diamond Dogs", oddly enough--, but otherwise it is cartoonish and eventually tiresome. My main objection, however, is that the guitar is jangly, pinched, and nasal sounding throughout. The orchestration is over-wrought--too much doubling, too much percussion.
The second selection is a sophomoric pastiche of various incongruous famous themes.
