Amazon.com essential recording

Whether she sings string-laden pop ballads, lively soul, or gritty electric blues, James's high-powered, enormously expressive voice displays a knack for passionate blues inflections. Emotionally charged ballads including "At Last" and "All I Could Do is Cry" find James blasting through the orchestra with unearthly wails and moans. "If I Can't Have You," a duet with Harvey Fuqua, drops the orchestra in favor of horn-driven R&B and "Something's Got a Hold On Me" is a gospel-flavored romp reminiscent of Ray Charles. A live version of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" shows her raunchiest Chicago-blues style, and "In the Basement," with Sugar Pie DeSanto, is a funky workout. Also here are three classics from her soul-drenched 1967 Muscle Shoals sessions. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars I like this cd.......2007-05-14

I liked this cd there are a few good songs. Everyone knows the classic At Last and there are a couple others that are similar to that sound. If you like a bluesy soulful sound you will like this cd.

4 out of 5 stars A DECENT MIX OF ETTA.......2007-01-31

now i prefer her earlier stuff, but a lot of that later stuff is pretty enjoyable to listen to. if you wanna get into what etta did, i would recommend this one. however, if it was me, i would go for either her early albums when she was starting out and was hungry (ROLL WITH HENRY). however, if you become an instant fan by her more recent stuff, then check this out and see why people see her as an icon (who should get more credit along with ruth brown and baby washington).

5 out of 5 stars the real queen of the blues.......2006-04-19

probably the best album from Etta. She is a legend

"Sounds nice," Bo Diddley tongue-in-cheekily observes of his music in "The Story of Bo Diddley," one of three self-named tunes on this 20-track examination of his classic '50s and '60s Checker Records sides. Not only was the former Ellas McDaniels rhythmically sharp enough to have a beat named after himself; he had a great guitar sound and a seemingly endless supply of shaggy-dog stories, lover-man boasts, silly jokes, and complaints with which to fuse them. His Best boils down the two-CD Chess Box, including signature pieces like "Bo Diddley" and "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" alongside unjustly obscure tunes such as "Pills" (later covered by the New York Dolls) and "Dearest Darling." Great. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Bo Diddley.......2007-07-19

This is a nice introduction to the work of Bo Diddley. The liner notes say: ". . .you can't judge a book by its cover, but you can sure tell something about how important a musician is by the artists who do cover versions of his songs." And a lot of musicians covered his songs or were influenced by his work.

Some of the songs on this album well exemplify his art:

"Bo Diddley": This eponymous work lays out the classic Bo. What a romp! The rhythm is infectious and his guitar work is solid. He shows off a nice blues and rock voice. This is, of course, classic Bo Diddley. And it is one of the great blues/rock songs of the ages.

"I'm a Man": The B side to "Bo Diddley" when 45s were the nature of the recording game. One of the best B sides of all time! Compare with Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy." Tough to choose between them! There is a wonderful basic instrumental tune with great blues vocals from Bo. Classic!

"Hey Bo Diddley": A nicely done variation on "Bo Diddley." Good rhythm.

Finally, "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover": There are nice lyrics here, with Bo playing nice variations off of the title. Well done indeed. The rhythm and guitar work is wonderful. The beat is infectious.

This is a wonderful introduction to the corpus of Bo Diddley, one of the major founding figures in rock and roll as well as a nice blues contributor.

5 out of 5 stars Bo Is The Real Boss! .......2007-04-15

Bo is to rock and roll, what Strauss is to the polka. Bo is to rock and roll, what Waylon is to country. Bo is to rock and roll, what BB is to the blues. Bo is without peer! The CD belongs in the library of everybody who has an ear for music. I'll bet you'll open it a second time!

5 out of 5 stars Immensely Influential.......2007-01-03

Few artists have ever had such an impact as Bo Diddley. He left his mark on all rock that followed. Bo's music really shows the evolution of blues into rock. He often gets tossed in oldies bins, but this stuff is timeless, and some of it has more bite than anything one would expect from the time; for example, the awesome "Pills" is one of rocks' first "drug songs" and one of the best rock songs ever written. So many of these songs have been covered by popular artists, and so many original compositions still owe a large debt to Bo Diddley's work. Diddley was a true pioneer, in fact, the originator of a beat so distinctive that musicians know it as the "Bo Diddley Beat." Bo Diddley is not just music for those wanting to learn about the roots of rock though, it is truly vital and irresistible. For those looking for a good place to start, this is essential Bo Diddley and essential music: PERIOD!

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2006-11-10

If you are in anyway interested in either Chicago/Mississippi blues or the roots of rock and roll this CD is a must have item.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-28

Bo-Didley's names says it all? Best collection of his music. I will recommend to anyone who is fan of people who have tried Bo's style like Stones, Eric Burden etc., to give a listen to this. An excellent investment for your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Agile Vocal Chords.......2007-07-29

Clarence Henry was born in Algiers - no not that Algiers but a little burgh in Louisiana - on March 19, 1937. At age 19, and having no previous recording experience, he manage to get himself a contract with Argo, cutting the novelty Ain't Got No Home b/w Troubles, Troubles. Released in late 1956 with Paul Gayten & His Orchestra backing, and billed as Clarence Henry "Frog Man" because of his vocal tricks on the A-side, the disc reached # 3 R&B and # 20 Billboard Top 100 in February 1957, making him a true overnight success.

But when nothing else immediately clicked on either chart, the bosses at Argo figured they had themselves another of those "one hit wonders" that seemed to be coming and going with regular monotony throughout the industry.

Indeed, even though the label stuck with him, it wasn't until 1961 that he returned to the charts with But I Do b/w Just My Baby And Me. This brought him back to prominence, reaching # 4 Billboard Hot 100 and # 9 R&B in April (note: if you have an original Argo 5378 45 of this hit penned by Bobby Charles, it may show it as I Don't Know Why, although most pressings showed But I Do).

In June he was back with the 1944 Mills Brothers hit, You Always Hurt The One You Love b/w Little Suzy, taking it to # 11 R&B and # 12 Hot 100. Three months later he had Lonely Street (not the same as the Andy Williams 1959 hit) reach # 19 R&B and # 57 Hot b/w Why Can't You. After that the hits became scarce with On Bended Knees going to # 64 Hot 100 in November 1961, followed by A Little Too Much which could only manage # 77 Hot 100 in January 1962.

As another reviewer says, this is a joyous little compilation that will offer delight to one and all. And not only do you get all six of his hit singles, but three of the flipsides as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD if you like Oldies!!!.......2006-11-10

Brought back great memories of the time when music was really music. Great dance music also. If you were raised in the 50's, 60's or 70's this should be a wonderful addition to your collection. You will not be sorry you purchased!

4 out of 5 stars Great essential cd!.......2004-07-13

If you're a 50's R&B collector, you probably own this by now, but if you just like the song 'ain't got no home', this one is definately worth picking up. I've had my copy since the age of 14 or so and it's been played a million times! The first 3 or 4 songs have that same fun, bouncy feel. As for the rest, you'll hear a good sampling of the man's work. It may take a little to get used to the rest of the alblum, as the later material has a different sound, (mostly mellow love ballads) but altogether - not bad! If you like New Orleans sounds of Fats, Smiley Lewis, Lloyd Price or Huey "piano" Smith, You'll like this one.

5 out of 5 stars New Orleans R&B.......2003-05-10

As a native New Orleanian,I can tell you that this music epitomizes this cities' past influence on rock and roll as well as R&B.And Algiers is in the city of New Orleans on the West bank.

5 out of 5 stars Fatter than Fats.......1999-07-25

Although "Frogman" may have broken into radio play with his novelty song "Ain't Got No Home (I'm a Lonely Frog)" this CD contains much that is enduring in R&B. The liner notes reveal that Henry's idol was Fats Domino, and one listen proves that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Cut after cut contains the rolling piano and lyrical phrasing Fats made famous. I found the arrangements infectious and the pacing enjoyable. This is music which can be played for your grandmother or your grandchild, guaranteed to bring a smile. Buy it!

Chuck Berry, already 29 when he scored his first hit with 1955's "Maybellene," drew on his own experiences at school and behind the wheel to fashion many of the classics that made him one of rock & roll's earliest great songwriters. Linking country boogie to jump-blues licks from the likes of Louis Jordan, Berry was both in touch with the past and totally new, as proto-protests ("School Day") and odes to the freshly flourishing teen lifestyle ("Sweet Little Sixteen," "Oh Baby Doll") make clear. While His Best (and its companion volume) provide a more expensive alternative to the now out-of-print Great Twenty-Eight, there's no getting around the fact that Berry's music is as essential as it comes. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Half of Chuck's greatest hits.......2004-02-24

If you buy this disc in tandem with "Greatest Hits II" then you will have almost all of Chuck Berry's greatest hists. The sound quality is very good, there are no live versions (which mar other Berry "greatest hits" packages), and there is nothing but great music here.

It's a shame that Chuck Berry is not universally recognized as one of the greatest rock lyricists and most innovative figures. This CD will convince even skeptics of his brilliance. Without Chuck Berry, there would be no Beatles, Rolling Stones or Kinks, or at least in the forms they eventually took.

This CD contains all of Berry's original early recordings, pristine and beautifully remastered. Who can deny that his way with words was umatched: "He never, ever learned to read or write so well, but he could play a guitar just like a-ringing a bell..." It's a tragedy that most people have grown up listening to inferior musicians do paltry cover versions of the songs Berry wrote and performed better than anyone else.

This set is an absolutely essential component of any collection, of any genre. Chuck Berry was a pioneer with words and music and his influence is sorely underestimated today. Had Chuck Berry been born white, he would be regarded as a rock God instead of being neglected and virtually forgotten in many circles. These 28 magnificent songs just about cover his catalogue of hits. This is a great sampling, but incomplete, so if you want to experience Berry's real genius, branch off into his lesser known songs. But for the money, this one rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation.......2003-07-31

[This review covers BOTH of the "His Best" compilations.]

Chuck Berry. He's been called the godfather of rock by a number of widely successful musical artists, including the Beatles (the most successful band of all time!) How does this hits compilation, The Great Twenty-Eight, measure up? Read on and see!

THE GOOD: You get CB's big hits here. These include, but are not limited to Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven, School Day, Rock And Roll Music, Sweet Little Sixteen, Johnny B. Goode, and No Particular Place To Go. In addition you get other lesser-known tracks that are also excellent.

THE BAD: There is only one reason I didn't give this compilation five stars. It makes a mistake many other CB hits compilations make - The omission of the Christmas songs (meaning Run Rudolph Run, one of my favorite CB songs, isn't here.) Also, it's a two-volume set, meaning you have to buy two different CDs.

OVERALL: Despite minor shortcomings, this an excellent set. However, I strongly suggest you shell out the extra money and get the three-disc Chess Box instead. It's surprisingly affordable and worth the extra cash.

5 out of 5 stars gone like a cool breeze........2002-01-22

i hate the fifties is "my old amamata" i prefer the descendants of r&r after the british got hold of rock and roll and revamped it in the mid sixties, but berry transcends that, he leaves those mop haired boys at the docks in liverpool standing still. berry was a genius in the sense like johnson, patton and the chicago bluesmen couldnt explain the effects of a guitar strum but could channel electricity into the most lethargic of bodies.
i must admit the pop melodies sometimes force me to play some johnny cash laments in between berry setting the juke on fire but mostly i am humming along with "Rainwater blowing all under my hood, i know it wont do my motor good!"
the man is ferocity and makes you feel good unlike most pop music today that just seems to be a copy of a copy thats got a catching rythm but always seems to be saying the same thing repetitively, it lacks the rawness of berrys lyrics that are sung as though they are the discovery of a new America every time you play a song.
it is pop music and its suppossed to be fun its about living the high school hop that can only be related to kids today as corny and passe' but forget everything lennon, dylan, hayes, mayfield mellencamp, rotten, ice t and all those other people who turned pop music into a lifestyle for two minutes while Chuck Berry is on, and you can really feel the frenzy that would have inhabited a rock and roll show in the fifties.
buy it and cherish every word.

This album is great not just from a historical standpoint. It doesn't sound dated and it's good to rock out or boogie down to anytime. Even though the lyrics seem trivial they sound so right for the music and make you think that nobody could have said it better. No More Monkey Business is my favorite, since he ends lots of his lyrical lines with this really cool gutteral "ha!" Really fun and brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars Curious Approach To Releases.......2007-08-01

MCA took a curious approach to their Millenium Collection releases, with some offering 12 selections [e.g., Roger Miller] and others just 11 [Jerry Butler, The Four Tops, and this one as examples].

I believe here they bobbled the ball just a bit. Like contemporary groups such as The Impressions [50 charted R&B singles] and The Miracles [48 charted R&B singles] The Dells were right there with them hit for hit, chalking up 47 themselves between 1956 and 1992 for nine different labels (Vee-Jay, Cadet, Mercury, ABC, 20th Century, Private I, Veteran, Virgin, and Philadelphia Int'l).

However, unlike those groups The Dells only had 21 cross over to the Billboard Hot 100 and just eight make the Top 40 on those Pop charts. The Impressions had 32 Hot 100, putting 17 into the Top 40, while The Miracles, easily the most successful, had 42 Hot 100 hits, 29 of which made the Top 40.

In a series such as this, restricted to 11 or 12 selections, it would be impossible therefore to cover all the major hits of The Impressions and Miracles - but not so where The Dells are concerned. Which leads me to wonder why they did not go to 12 selections and include the only Top 40 hit missing - 1969's Does Anybody Know I'm Here which peaked at # 15 R&B and # 38 Hot 100?

There are a few more nice shots of the group in the insert along with two pages of liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo, but the list of contents, while showing label numbers and, in some instances, the year of release [inconsistent here], they do not reflect chart performances.

Not a bad compilation as these go, but it could have been so mch better with just a little more research and effort.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Baddest Soul Groups Ever.......2003-04-28

The Dells are One of the Baddest SOulful Groups Ever&it's a Shame they aren't in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame because they should be in there long ago to me.there vocals bring so much warmth&Feeling.when you hear this Collection you will know where many Groups that came after them got there stuff from.enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars 20th Century Masters.......2001-10-01

For those who appreciate the finer doo wop groups, The Dells are 'Numero Uno'. All their classic hits are on this CD. You cannot like doo wop and not like The Dells. They're the greatest -- and they're still around singing up a storm.

5 out of 5 stars ** The Sounds Of Greatness **.......2001-03-16

With a group like the Dells, you can expect to sit down to fabulous harmony, loving lyrics and go back to a time when people sang about love and life with love in their voices.

EVERY soul group after the Dells, has always listed them as one of their major inspirations, think about Blue Magic, the Chi Lites and even the Delphonics.

This group is still one of the best soul groups ever. You can not help but enjoy this music and become a fan!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Brief but good.......2003-12-11

This is a rather brief compilation, as is usually the case with the Millennium Collections, but the track list is very strong. There are no real rarities to bait the hook for experienced blues listernes, but this is a nice introduction if you are new to classic 50s and 60s blues.
It features some really fine songs by some of the best and most renowned Chicago bluesmen, including Muddy Waters' swaggering "I Just Want To Make Love To You", Buddy Guy's smouldering, intense "First Time I Met The Blues", "Talk To Me Baby" by slide guitar legend Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson II's swinging "Checkin' Up On My Baby", and Howlin' Wolf's awesome "Killing Floor".

As far as "samplers" go, this is one of the best of its kind, and it showcases some great guitar work, not only by the main artists themselves, but also by superb sidemen like Hubert Sumlin and Robert "Jr." Lockwood.
4 1/2 stars.
