Sons of Soul is the third album from Tony! Toni! Tone! and one of 1993's best efforts from any quarter. The Oakland trio (which contains no one named Toni) drew its inspiration for this project from such childhood heroes as Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Sly Stone, but they have transformed those materials with up-to-date hip-hop and Caribbean flavors. Much more important than the influences, old or new, is the high quality of Ray Wiggins' singing and songwriting, which marries rhythm, melody and meaning as effectively as his heroes once did. --Geoffrey Himes

I have been a fan of Tony Toni Tone since day one and I love all of their music but I'm going to classify this CD as my favorite Tony Toni Tone CD. I had bought the tape a long time ago when it first came out but I lost it so I recently purchased the CD. This CD takes me on a wonderful journey and the songs are brilliantly written and fun. One of my favorite songs on this CD is "Anniversary" because Raphael's voice sweeps me into the song with him and its as if he's singing it to me. Its beautiful and sweet. Its one of those timeless songs that still gets played to this day on special occasions. Another one of my favorite jams is "Slow Wine". It really sets the mood for just slow dancing with that special person. All of the uptempo songs makes me want to get up and dance! I really dig the carribean beats throughout the CD. I listen to this CD almost every morning before I go to work because it just gives that get up and go that I need. I feel that anyone who is a true fan of R& B, especially a Tony Toni Tone fan, should have this CD in their collection. This CD is truly 5 stars to me. They definitely deserve the title "Sons of Soul".
Album Of The Year - 1993.......2007-01-28
This the Tony's tour-de-force. Nothing but the butter on this joint. One of the first neo soul records. Great Fusion of 60's and 70's soul and funk. Rafael Saadiq was on point with this one. Dwayne did good on Slow Wine.

Don't get me wrong, their first album "Who" was very good, the "Revival" they got much better, but to me I think "Sons of Soul" was their best so far.

Ten more stars - **********.......2005-12-10
This group is phenomenal. Great voices and the music, the music on my stero makes you feel like you are in the house of the lord - the words are nice and crisp. 7 Sons of Soul; you made it happen. Every song on this CD is a hit - I can't wait for the next CD.
I Like It!.......2005-09-07
Run On is definitely a hit! Some of the other songs are pretty good too. The CD is a nice mix of contemporary and the old timey traditional gospel songs. Looking forward to hearing more from 7 Sons.
Great album.......2005-05-26
I am not a family member, nor do I live in the northern area. I thought this album was HOT. It's like a neosoul quartet. I even saw them live first and then got the album and was not disappointed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My opinion is, great vocals, great feel, wonderful vibe. Definetly a must have if you like traditional or modern gospel. Can't wait for the next one.
Deary me.......2005-04-18
SugerBrown is a dumbass. If u re-read what the other guy said, you'll see you're jsut being stupid. He never threatened anyone you stupid idiot. This CD is pleasant, not spectacular, but some good songs nonetheless. People need to stop being so pathetic and critising each other. yeah some people may love it, and some may hate it, but if you hate it, and criticise the CD and insult them, have a look at yourself and then see that they're probably achieving more than you...
Don't listen to the haters?.......2005-01-20
This cd is beyond good. It is great ! It is a contemporary album with soulful R&B and gospel flava. These songs are awesome! This CD will feed all Spirits Believers and non-believers. My favorite songs are no. 5 (one more chance) and no. 10.

Album Description
Mile Markers is just what the name says: a set of signs posted to guide the way home. . . or maybe point out the direction that has home in the rear view mirror.
Set in the West, it rambles and wanders and aims the steering wheel out at the endless horizon. A halfways unfolded road map, it passes through Austin and Tucson and San Ysidro and Los Angeles, through the badlands of both South Dakota and New Mexico, from Oklahoma and the windy Panhandle country around Abilene all the way to Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley.
But Mile Markers is a spiritual voyage as much as a mere travelogue, a set of tales that turns into a single song of journeying forth.
It's like a Western, in a way. It's "The Searchers," or "Ride the High Country," or" High Plains Drifter." Or even"Two-Lane Blacktop" or "The Getaway," because it's set in a contemporary West divided by white lines and asphalt, and settled by truckstops and parking lots. It's a landscape of big skies and long roads and endless Mile Markers flying by at the edge of your vision. And like every true Western ever, contemporary or not, it's a story of drifting and settling, of setting down roots and then having them torn up again, of learning that you don't dare settle down when you're just going to be forced to hit the road again.
For Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons, the last ten years has been a blur of miles and markers. BSOJC has played more shows most years than most bands do in their entire careers, and they've done it the hard way, piling their own gear into their own van, and then heading off into a dark night that's just a couple of hours away from day. A lot of indie bands have done a lot of this, but not many have made the long haul across an entire decade. And amidst that grueling schedule, Stewart has managed to keep writing, delivering two previous records, Walk Alone and Distance Between, that built a hardcore fanbase for the band and yet achieved a critical recognition that most singer-songwriters would slit their left wrist to gain. It was an enviable position, as long as you didn't have to do all the work that went with it.
Customer Reviews:
REAL Country Music for a Change.......2006-03-19
Listening to the Bastard Sons' music makes you want to grab a ice-cold longneck and Belly up to the nearest bar. Mile Markers is some of the band's best stuff and in my opinion "Road to Bakersfield" may be one of their best ever which is saying alot. If you're tired of the cookie-cutter type music played on "country" stations, give The Bastards a listen! I'll see ya at the bar.
"The Honky-tonks have all gone away but Buck and Merle are here to stay, on the Road to Bakersfield".
San Diego Tribune and Des Mones City View reviews.......2005-10-03
"Mature tales of life on the road and lost love as seen by Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash through the windshield of a van carrying them through thousands of miles of desert highways abound on the alt-country outfit's third and finest album, "Mile Markers." The album's lead track, "Austin Nights," sets the pace for much of "Mile Markers" with a mesmerizing groove, touches of sweeping Spanish and steel guitars, an unforgettable melody and deft lyrics of wanderlust delivered by Stuart's trademark warm timbre. "King of the World" is a clever observation of the trials of maintaining a relationship while living on the road and "California Sky" is a touching tribute to the band's home state. These songs, and others, are as cool and arid as a moonlight drive through the desert and they resonate with hope as they travel through the great unknown."
Michael Swanger --
Des Moines City View
"Unwinding like a country road movie, "Mile Markers" offers twangy slices of Southwestern life. San Diego's favorite Bastard Sons take "The Road to Bakersfield" after spending an "Austin Night" with the character-conscious Texas singer-songwriters (Townes the drifter would've been proud). The Telecaster and steel-guitar sound is potent, but it's Mark Stuart's lived-in vocals that stand out, notably on the closing-time ballad "Are You Lonely Tonight?""
Mikel Toombs
San Diego Union Tribune
I SMELL GASOLINE!!!.......2005-09-23
So are you tired, like me, of the overly produced, slick as a linoleum slate of endless pseudo country music dribble? Do you have a hard time telling one band or singer from another. Drones of clones... it just goes on and on. I threw out my radio a long time ago, my friends. They won't play these Bastards! And that is the shame of the state of the country music business today. Luckily, the "ALT - COUNTRY" music scene is saving the day, and these guys are at the top of my list for grit, power, emotion and steam. They are the musical equivalent of an 18 wheeled highway locomotive, the kind that leaves your windshield smoke stained with gasoline fumes as you follow them down that lost desert highway. You've got Johnny Cash playing at full volume. You could pass on by, but no, you're hooked on the diesel fumes, so you ride in their wake, cause they know where they're going and you want to get there too.
I love these guys. I've been following them since the late 90s, almost from the start, hitting every show they've done here in Phoenix. After the shows, I would talk to Mark Stuart and the band, listening to all their war stories about the road, the honky tonks, and the near collisions with both drivers and fame. Like the time they recorded in Johnny Cash's famed cabin, and the feeling he left behind there. They have his blessings and they'll need it, because you ain't gonna find a country DJ with the balls to say "Bastard Sons" on the air.
I truly didn't think they could top the eerie, mystical sounds of their last album, Distance Between (a masterpiece in sonic layers of emotion), but they did it here, with Mile Markers. All the tales I heard them tell of their woes on the road are celebrated in this masterful song cycle of true Americana. It's Route 66 in your ears! You can just smell the burning rubber and gasoline. Each song is like a much needed rest stop along the endless freeway, when you step out onto the pavement of a brightly lit truckstop and feel the breeze of our great nation blowing through your hair. My favorite is UNDER YOUR SPELL. You know what I'm talking about guys, that sultry waitress at the Diner, where you can't stand the food, but you keep coming back for another whiff of her seductive perfume.
KING OF THE WORLD and RADIO GIRL are gems that we should be hearing on the radio, politically incorrect band name or not. I want to hear this stuff blairing out somebody's car radio for a change, instead of that damned rap crap! YEAH!!! I want to hear it playing on the Juke Boxes clean across this here country. This is music that defines our country's heritage!
Mark Stuart is a prolific songwriter, with nearly as many unreleased songs in the vault as Neil Young himself. As a matter of fact him and old Neil are the only two guys left who can really write a good song any more.
So what's fifteen bucks for a trip down route 66, at today's gas prices, it's a bargain!!
Now go to your windows, stick your heads out and shout
"I SMELL GASOLINE!!!!!!!"

Tight No Limit LP.......2005-09-08
This a good album from the sons of funk, they are very underatted, I'm mad they didn't come out with another album, i think P didn't promote it enuff, They would have sold so many records, with the right push , they are great r&b producers as well, I would have them do my album if i was a singer. Songs like Pushin Inside of U are classics, but you never hear of it, everybody i let hear it be asking who these nig**as they hot, gurls be loving it, the rest of the songs are tight as well, they singing skills are average but they creativity and production is what stands out, At first I didn't want to buy iy cuz the cover looked kinda stupid, then i heard some snippets and i fell in love with it, its one of my tightest cd's i have. But don't judge it by the cover because thats decieving, i have been skeptical since 1998 to buy it, I just bought it last year 2004, its hot y'all so pick it up
Only for no limit fans.......2003-08-24
NO LIMIT swamped 1998 with rappers and bands putting out 1 LP and then leaving the label.
this is not bad and i believe THEIR IS A SINGLE WHICH I CANNOT FIND ANYWHERE.
Thugs need love too!.......2003-06-04
how ya do dat dere? tight album, incl. "Make Love 2 A Thug" (a really crunk club track feat. Master P), "Pushin' Inside Of You" (perfect track to make love to), "I Got The Hook-Up w/o Master P" (cold chills to dis one!), "Y'All I Want" (kinda latin touch to it, smooth), "Makin Luv 2 My B****" (great thug girl song), and "Time Will Tell" (ghetto type of ballad, really depressive & sad, feat. Master P)
Excellent R&B cd.......2000-12-30
Ok forget everything I said in my last review of this cd. This is one of the best R&B cds ever! The only problem with it is that it's too short. All the songs are tight, but the ones I like the most are Makin Luv To My B..., Y'all I Want, Side To Side, Hey Lady, Pushin Inside You, You And Me, The First Time, and Don't Wanna Let You Go. This cd is great, a must-have for R&B fans, so check it out today!
Bomb cd!.......2000-06-13
Ok I listened to this more thoroughly and I decided that it deserves 4 stars. The songs are very sexy and romantic and it's a great cd for any smooth R&B fan! I gave this 4 stars only because the song Make Luv To A Thug is weak and also there aren't enough songs. Whenever I listen to this, it reminds me of the girl I love. Kelly, I don't know if you love me or not, but if you ever, for some reason, happen to stumble upon this review and read it, I just want you to know that I love you with all my heart and you are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my entire life. I don't know if you feel the same way, but I hope you do.

As Perfect As Gospel Music Can Be.......2002-04-16
Released some three years after their 1998 "Help Me Lift His Holy Name" CD this one gets it almost as perfect as Gospel music can be. You have to hear it! From the up opening 'Come Over Here' the recording blends the instruments and vocals in a much tighter mix. Adding organ and Chicago-type horns, with occasional funk thrown in, the Sons again show their blessed and anointed Morgan family pedigrees. The lead vocals are also stronger in articulation and recording quality. In my opinion, the sleeper of the CD is track 7, "Oh My Loving Mother" with its groove and Rock of Ages refrain. And listen to the opening chords and guitar work and see if you don't think of Austin blues artists. Of course the Chicago style horns can bring you back to the roots of soul and Gospel music too. One question is why the producer doesn't let the group jam on more like in track 7? The stellar track 3, "I'm a New Creature" is nevertheless faded out and brought back as a reprise on track 4 and this hurts the continuity of feeling and inspiration. I've seen "The Sons of the Soul Revivers" in two live performances and this CD captures their essence perfectly. If you worship the Lord through musical ministry then the joy, messages and love in this CD are as powerful as anything out there. The music that carries these feelings and words is so superb you'll wonder why this talented group hasn't produced more CD's. And you can't wait until they do.

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30
This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!
One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10
This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.
Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11
I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.
