Amazon.com essential recording
Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice (positively shiver-eliciting on "The Dream," as is Collins's lead guitar work) complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere. --Genevieve Williams

Pure Stratcats and Telecats.......2007-06-01
I cut out and kept a magazine review of Showdown! for about 6 years before I finally picked it up. To (loosely) quote the reviewer, "Whoever got these three guys together in the same studio, at the same time, deserves a goddam medal."
Right on.
Blues Guitar at it's very best.......2007-04-23
A wonderful mix of two old Texas slingers and a youngin',sharing, stomping' and blastin' the blues like nobody else.
This could have been an absolute disaster, what with this much talent in one room.
Fortunately, the classy side of these giants prevails and we are left with a remarkable gift. The mutual respect just pours out of the speakers as you hear these guys compliment each other not attempting to out gun each other.
This could arguably be called the best modern blues collaboration ever....
B.B. & Bobby???
Stevie Ray & Albert???
Clapton & King???
Albert & Moore???
I'm open for suggestions 'cause there are none I know of.
Wrap yer head around this Blues Summit and be prepared to witness some of the sweetest sounds ever wrung out of Fenders!
Grammy Award Winning All-Star Blues Guitar Review.......2007-04-05
Showdown is one of the top two or three blues guitar collaborations of all time. Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Robert Cray, all on one record? Unbelievable. But that's what happened, and the result was magic.
All three get a chance to show their chops, and all three were on top of their blues guitar game recording this record. The energy, skill, and unbridled joy at performing with talented musicians always brings the best out from other talented musicians. Every cut is excellent.
It's a shame that Showdown could have been repeated more often than twice. Both Collins and Copeland are gone, leaving Cray to find other blues greats to jam with, but we will always have Showdown to remember when.
Three times as Good!.......2006-12-17
Man this is one great blues guitar album. It may be listed under Albert Collins, but this is a true collaboration as one reviewer put it two estabilished stars on one up and coming star. Robert Cray really shines here and is much bluesier then you will find him on his own albums. All three share in the vocal duties and the guitar solos. No one plays over each other - it's a great collaboration that results in a great album. Just listen to the first cut and you will get a good taste of what is in store. Buy it and enjoy.
A Must-Have in Any Blues Collection - Simply Stellar.......2006-07-22
I just came across this disc recently, while I was doing searches on Johnny Copeland's records. When this record came up, I was surprised to see Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, and Robert Cray play together, but now I know that both Copeland and Cray were Albert Collins' proteges when they were starting out.
So in other words, it's kind of like a blues family reunion, and that is exactly how this CD feels. It's a meeting of the blues admiration society. You can hear it from the respect each musician pays to one another on record and how they talk and respond to each other.
Collins, Copeland, and Cray work incredibly well together. The tunes they put out are nothing short of stellar - intense, soulful, masterful, emotional Chicago blues from guitar virtuosos.
-"Hey Albert!"
-"Hey, yea, what's happening Johnny?"
-"You got your harmonica with you today, man?"
-"Yea, I brought it with me today, man."
-"I think we better get on down, you know, because I got the bluuuuues."
-"You know I got 'em too."
-"Here it is...."
-"Here it is, man..."
With those words, the bluesmen start playing "Bring your fine self home." Albert is playing harmonica in a way that's just so ornate and beautiful, it will send tingles down your spine. Johnny is growling on the vocals, while Albert keeps blowing that fine harmonica, and what a fine tune they make. Slow rolling blues that's is as soulful as it gets.
"The Dream" is a beautiful song where Robert Cray gets to show everyone his beautiful vocals. I agree with other reviewers that Cray adds certain touch of sophistication to this record. His style is quite a bit different from the two other men, but when he sings and Albert plays his guitar in that icy hot trademark way of his, you just have to hold your breath and listen to every note.
"Blackjack" is probably my personal favorite on this record. It's a slow-rolling blues tune with a strong beat, excellent vocals, and intense guitar solos by each of the three. It's mostly Johnny Copeland that's doing the singing on this record with his trademark growl, but on this track, Albert is doing the singing, which is pure delight. When Albert calls out on each man to solo, you can see just how different the sounds and styles are between the three guitar players. Albert's guitar is unmistakable - it cuts your ear real sharp. Johnny's sound is also stinging but in a different sense. His style, to me, is sort of a hybrid of Albert Collins and Albert King school of sound, squeezing the notes and yet keeping the icy electrical edge. Robert Cray's style was highly reminiscent of his guitar work on his disc "I Was Warned", a more aggressive rock-flavored battering that he played back in the day. What a unique track!
I can't believe I didn't find out about this disc sooner. It's any electrical blues fan's dream.

THis has to be the best album ever... Every song is absolute superb:) From the very beginning of the first song, through the ending of the last is pure magic. I'm never getting tired of listening to this CD.
Hard Southern Rock At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09
Wow! What a great sophomore effort from the Showdown! Very little screaming, especially when compared to their debut, and that's a good thing. This band is clearly finding its voice. Edgier and harder than traditional Southern rock (Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, 38 Special), The Showdown reveals maturity beyond their years. Begining with the raucous Fanatics and Whores, possibly the best track on the CD, Temptation hits on all cylinders throughout. The fact this is Christian Rock should not sway you from purchasing. These guys hold their own against any secular band out there. The Showdown rocks!
From an experienced Showdown fan..........2007-04-27
New album = good. Old album = metal masterpiece.
Ok so the new album is a huge change from A Chorus of Obliteration, and I, like many others, was at first a little unsatisfied after the first listen. I'm gonna say that a few songs got me snakebit, but probably more of a python bite as opposed to the full on venomous Black Mamba bite that the A Chorus of Obliteration will strike you with. The name of the game for the Showdown has always been High-Voltage heavy metal. It stands true, just not quite as true as it did on the first album. The songs are incredibly slower than the first and there is definitely a lack of screams. That said, I am not one of those metalcore guys who only gets their kicks of screaming. BUT David Bunton has the best scream known to man. Hands down. So I was hoping for more of that on this album and was slightly disappointed in the lack of it. Fact is, David just has an amazing voice all around. Every song on this album is full of his voice which compliments the songs perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly. If any of you have ever seen The Showdown live, you have experienced getting snake bit, lightning bolts and all, and this new cd doesn't quite fit their live shows as well as A Chorus of Obliteration, but it still gets the job done. Now I find the cd very satisfying, it just took me a while to deal with the total change of pace. The cd is a great listen all the way through (with the possible exception of "It Drinks from Me" i still can't get into that one). I highly recommend this record, but not quite as much as I recommend the first one. Buy them both.
P.S. I don't mean to bash anyone else, but please for the love of Pete, do NOT believe what someone else said about there being a dash of Nickelback in there.

Aww Sh*t.......2007-04-25
Well, lookie here, we have yet another band that decided to go ditch their previous sound and make a boring radio rock album. Okay, here's the problem, I picked up The Showdown's first album, "A Chorus of Obliteration", because it was a catchy metal album with some excellent leads. It took me a while to get into, but I enjoyed it. But here, with "Temptation Come My Way", you might as well be another copy of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil", which is just bland formulatic arena rock. I downloaded this CD, because I wanted to hear how it would be. Well, it was deleted from my hard drive after I listened to every track on this album. I am so disappointed with this CD. If you're into southern rock or radio music, you'll cream yourselves over this. Old Showdown fans, don't even bother.
Simply Incredible..........2007-04-03
This album starts out totally different than their first effort, actually, the whole cd is a masterpiece. Let me say it like this, If you took Metallica, Def Leppard, Randy Rhodes, Joe Satriani, Eddie VanHalen, AC/DC, Ozzy, Megadeath, Iron Maiden with a drop of Skynard, threw them all in a blender, cranked the volume and ripped the knob off you would have the sound that emits from these guys. They start with Whores and Fanatics and melt every track, including the heavy southern bluesy sound of It Drinks From Me, this is a powerful album with a great message to boot. Their cover of Kerry Livgren's "Carry On My Wayward Son" is a great move on their part to show the diversity of this album. This is a must if you are looking for a great Christian Metal Album that will completely rock your socks off. I could continue but get it for yourself, you will not be sorry.

80's Isleys in a blaze of glory.......2007-05-14
More funk from one of the greatest bands in history...during the 80's, Groove With You is considered an Isley Brothers classic. Take Me To the Next Phase, Coolin' Me Out and Tonight Is The Night are legendary Isley Brothers stuff. It's remastered for a stronger and noise free sound. How could you be unhappy with 2 Isley bros. albums for the price of one? Can't go wrong with this selection.
I Love the Isleys!.......2007-05-09
This double CD set includes classic Isley slow jams. If you love 70s music, if you love Isley Brothers 70s music, this CD is a must have for your collection.
A Great Isley Two-fer.......2007-03-01
This Two-on-One Isley cd from the UK label BGO collects two popular Isley albums that have never been released on cd in the US: The multi-platinum album SHOWDOWN (1978) and the gold album GRAND SLAM (1981). A slick booklet featuring liner notes retelling the Isley Brothers story and sparkling remastered sound enhance this package.
SHOWDOWN (1978) represented the Isleys at the top of their game when their formula of mixing funk with hard rock was still fresh and exciting. It included the #1 r&b hit "Take Me To The Next Phase" and the mellow "Groove With You". The wailing hard rock tunes "Rockin' With Fire" and "Love Fever" feature crunchy guitar chords and slashing guitar solos by the underated Ernie Isley, while on "Coolin' Me Out" and "Fun And Games", the Isleys go pop without losing their funky edge.
By the time 1981's GRAND SLAM was released, the Isleys clavinet-guitar solo-mellow funk formula was getting a little stale. Thus the entire album sounded like studio outtakes rather than a unified piece of work. It was the first Isley album that failed to produce at least one top-10 r&b hit since 1970's GET INTO SOMETHING. The highlights on this brief album are the beautiful "I Once Had Your Love (And I Can't Let Go)", the inspirational "Don't Let Up" and the top-50 pop hit "Hurry Up And Wait". Ernie's scorching guitar licks save the lame "Young Girls", while "Party Night" and "Who Said", the album's first single, are strictly filler material.

a number of really good songs and well done heavy metal. Their best CD.
The Showdown.......2007-03-24
Excellent tunes with that hard core advantage. If you like the Showdown your in for a treat.
Good Album, Great Band, Okay Song-writing.......2007-02-21
Again, I want to rate the album 5 stars, but like with their latest offering, flaws prevent me...I know, the Children-of-Bodomish "Hell Can't Stop Us Now" is great, and so is the next three tracks after that. I would even say that the first five songs are flawless and smart, but then it gets a little worse...I agree with Timothy Perrine that this album in places sounds too formulaic or downright uninspiring. Even the first five songs lack originality, I can handpick its counterparts in other band's discography if I wanted to...This is a solid debut, but it is way overrated, as the problem is actually 99% of modern metal sounds exactly like The Showdown's debut...Oh, and the name has got to go...But after all I am giving this 4 stars because the band shows signs of potential greatness, and it is especially evident on the closing song, a slow semi-balad turns death metal scorcher...To fast forward to present day, I prefer "Temtation Come My Way" a lot more...But that is another story...To sum up, The Showdown could be great and their two albums are the evidence. They are with no doubt very skillful and talented bunch, but to achieve greatness of Mastodon, 80's Metallica or ANY Megadeth record, not to mention Dark Tranquility or Opeth, well, THAT takes to quote "Syriana" "Luck and hard work". The Showdown seem to show singns of both so let's give them a few years...Megadeth wasn't built in a day...
Classic thrash meets numetal.......2006-10-10
I first saw these guys play with Project 86... My first reaction was that they are damned talented and they know how to put on an entertaining show, but I have never really been into the screaming. Well, since this show, my friends have gotten really into The Showdown and I have to admit, this cd has really grown on me. The instrumentation is remeniscent of 80's/90's thrash metal like Metallica or Tourniquet. The singing features mostly screaming, which is admittedly not my favorite style, but the strength of the guitars (with tons of great metal riffs and solos) and drums (excellent double-kicking and blazing hands fills) take me back to that great show with Project 86 and I am quickly caught up in the intensity and authentic energy that is a stark reminder of what metal used to be... now that I think of it, this cd could easily pass as an unreleased early 90's Tourniquet album. If you miss the good old days of thrash metal, do yourself a favor and buy this cd.
Solid........2006-06-18
This album is incredible. Very solid metal, I think it is the best metal cd to come out in the past 5 years. Buy it for sure, you will not be dissapointed at all. Five Stars.

Fantastic!.......2007-01-09
As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.
Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17
I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.
As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.
4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11
This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers
KZ
One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01
Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

With the exception of one new track--the cynically titled "One for the $," by the Sugarhill Gang and Melle Mel--and some commentary by Ice-T and Public Enemy's Chuck D, there's nothing on The Showdown that can't be found on other collections. The Showdown also skips some important classics--"The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" and Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five's "Beat Street" among them. Those quibbles aside, this collection does achieve its goals: by showcasing the Sugarhill Gang--who emphasized the party groove from which rap came--and the extended Grandmaster Flash family--who saw themselves as social messengers (pun intended)--side by side, the album brings to light the pair's differences and groundbreaking creativity. Looking back on them decades after the fact with ears accustomed to production gymnastics, we can occasionally--and criminally--miss this.(For a more complete look at the two pioneers of rap and how they fit in with their contemporaries, check out The Sugar Hill Records Story.) --Randy Silver

Showdown--Old School Style........2007-07-17
GREAT CUTS ON THIS CD! PURCHASED TO HEAR "THE MESSAGE", AND "RAPPER'S DELIGHT"--SURPRISED BY SO MUCH MORE, FROM EACH GROUP, OF SIMILAR MUSICAL QUALITY! "APACHE","NY NY", "LIVIN' IN THE FAST LANE"--"WHITE LINES" (SERIOUS, SOLID, OLD-SCHOOL, TIMELESS BEATS), JUST TO NAME A FEW.
ONLY DOWN SIDE TO THIS CD ARE THE SPOKEN "RATINGS" OF EACH SONG BY ICE-T & CHUCK D--A FEW SECONDS LONG, AFTER EACH "DUEL" (AFTER ONE SONG BY EACH GROUP). IT'S ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, UNNECESSARY TO HEAR WHAT THESE TWO HAVE TO SAY--IF YOUR EARS WORK, THAT'S ALL YOU'LL NEED TO ENJOY THIS TREAT. JUST SKIP THE "REVIEW" TRACK AFTER EACH SECOND SONG. "SHOWDOWN" IS A SHOW-STOPPER!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD!

A Knight's Tale.......2006-12-30
This is such a fun CD. Mixes, jigs, electric guitar, choirs--what more could you ask for? Oh, and fanfares, of course.
Excellent Soundtrack Masterpiece.......2004-03-12
A knight's tale is one of the best movies ever made in history. It has everything from action to comedy to romance, all which I love in a movie. The soundtrack lives up to the movie. This is one of the best soundtracks ever composed. All the songs on here are excellently performed. My favorite song would be Track #7- To run or not to run. Excellent emotional song, good love theme also. I recommend to soundtrack to all soundtrack collectors. Do not pass this one by, for this soundtrack is already hard to come bye, so if you seen the movies and loved the score get the soundtrack, i guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Rousing and beautiful.......2003-02-22
Carter Burwell, who provided the score for A Knight's Tale, had to come up with music that would carry the film through. After all, it is the score, not the rock music that is the heart and soul of a movie. With that in mind, he succeeds. The music is heroic and romantic with lots of great sounds in it. "Nemesis" kicks things off with dramatic, medieval music, which leads to an adventurous section with plenty of horns and driving percussion. "Cooked Patents" contains an electric guitar mixed with traditional instruments from medieval times. "A Lance Without Target" is another thrilling adventure track with the same music that existed in "Nemesis." "St. Vitus' Dance" is utilized in 2 different tracks with different mixes. The Smithy mix is much better than the Grog mix. The best theme in the score is the love theme, which is a mainly string oriented 10 note motif that is the heart and soul of the film. The best tracks that showcase this outstanding theme are "To Run Or Not To Run" and the best track, "Showdown", which reprises all the other themes into one almost 7 minute track. An added bonus to this score is dialogue from the film from Chaucer, played by Paul Bettany found in the last track, after the music dies down. The director of the film, Brian Helgeland, describes the music in this way: "Carter's music has got sixth sense. It goes a level deeper than it's supposed to. It doesn't play the emotion of the character, the emotion of the moment. It plays the psyche, the consciousness of the character. Carter's music psychoanalyzes the moment. But in our hearts as well as our heads." I couldn't have said it any better.
Perfect soundtrack........2002-09-07
If you are checking for a wonderfull soundtract you must get this. I listen this and it was so great that i'm listennung this songs alll day in the car, in my house, in school, even in the bathroom! You must have this cd at your own home. 5 stars!
"always a fresh approach with each score...Burwell!".......2001-09-05
A talent to be reckoned with ~ Carter Burwell...who has in such a short time given filmgoers a trip and a half through his music...reaching down in his big black bag on past achievements ~ "Raising Arizona" (1987), "Miller's Crossing" (1990), "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992), "Rob Roy" (1995), "Fargo" (1996), "Conspiracy theory" (1997), "The Big Lebowski" (1998), "Being John Malkovich" (1999), "The Corruptor" (1999), "The Generals Daughter" (1999), "Book Of Shadows:Blair Witch 2" (2000), "Hamlet" (2000), "O Brother Where Art Thou" (2000)...I only mention a few from his over fifty scores composed since 1984.
There are stand outs ~ "ST. VITUS' DANCE (SMITHY MIX)", "ST. VITUS' DANCE (GROG MIX), "THE SHOWDOWN", bringing all the counterpoints and themes together, blending each with particular care...but the highlight has to be ~ "TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN", beautiful beyond all doubt, strings open with muted brass and the theme comes through like a ray of sunshine entering a group of trees, thundering percussion abounds giving each measure strength to behold, one of the best compositions I've heard from this composer who is rising to his place in the stars.
Entire album is a must have for any "film-score-buff", don't pass this up...you'll be missing an important part in the career of the composer extradinor' ~ CARTER BURWELL!
