The best-of-Luther thing has been done a couple of times before, but Greatest Hits lays it down well. The single-disc format means that one of your favorites might not be here, but among the well-chosen gems present are "Never Too Much," "A House Is Not a Home," "So Amazing," and "Any Love." Vandross, of course, was the reigning king of '80s R&B romance; while he was never as troubled as Marvin Gaye or as downright eccentric as Al Green, he did have that voice. Before hip-hop split the audience generationally, it was the favored accompaniment to seduction for many fans, whose number grew even greater when 1986's "Stop to Love" pushed him through the pop-crossover barrier once and for all. Greatest Hits summarizes the days when he ruled the world. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars What a Luther compilation should be.......2007-05-21

This CD is a terrific collection of some of his best songs, with one great classic after another and it's put together well.

5 out of 5 stars Luther Vandross: Greatest HIts.......2007-03-19

It arrived in excellent condition - sealed, although for the shipping fee rate I would have expected it a little sooner.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome .......2006-12-28

I was never really a Luther Vandross fan because my sister played him so much. I do have to say that this is a Great CD and he was a wonderful singer. I would buy more of his CD's.

5 out of 5 stars The true king of R&B.......2006-04-14

Luther was the king from the moment of his first ALBUM (remember those) release. Many artists have tried to and none of them has even come close to the magic Luther could do with a song. There are a lot of babies and marriages in this world thanks to Luther and I know for one, I'm going to miss him. There no point of listing my faves on this CD since I love them all.

5 out of 5 stars Long ago... and oh so far away..........2005-11-19

I fell in love with you, before the second show. Don't you remember you told me you love me baby?

The version of Songbird that Luther pulls off in this compilation is heartfelt, soulful, and oh so sweet.

The world has certainly lost one of the great musical talents of our era.

A must have.

Given Luther Vandross's precarious state of health at the time of its release, Dance With My Father's title track--a tale of yearning for a lost loved one--takes on added poignancy. It's something of a centerpiece on an album that moves in several directions, reaching for varied constituencies, while ultimately staying focused on Vandross's trademark buttery vocals. In addition to "Dance," there's more adult-contemporary balladry ("Buy Me a Rose"), lightly sassy soul ("If I Didn't Know Better"), and a number of collaborations with hip-hoppers that often work surprisingly well. While suspending disbelief is hard when considering Luther and Foxy Brown as a couple ("If It Ain't One Thing"), remakes of soft-R&B classics with Beyonce Knowles and Busta Rhymes prove to be highlights. With the Destiny's Child singer, Vandross actually improves on the familiar Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway take of "The Closer I Get to You," turning in a cut that recalls his slow-burning signature reworking of "A House is Not a Home." A languid turn at "Lovely Day," with a purring Busta, works almost as well. (The "Part II" remix is superfluous, however.) Otherwise, Dance is in the vein of post-`80s Vandross discs, and guaranteed to please fans. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Wowo's Review.......2007-01-17

If you are a great fan of Luther, you MUST have this CD...his last project before he left us! Listen to his career song - Dance with my father and you would definitely cry!

5 out of 5 stars Luther's Last Gift To Us.......2007-01-10

"DANCE WITH MY FATHER" is Luther's last gift to us. It is an extraorinary CD. Some of the songs have awesome lyrics i.e. "Buy Me A Rose". The multi-facited CD features a number of artists including: Foxy Brown, Busta Rhymes, Queen Latifah and a duet with Beyonce. The insert is wonderfully detailed and includes all the song lyrics. If you are a collector of Luther, then "DANCE WITH MY FATHER" (2003) is the album to finish off your collection as this is the final album recorded by Luther Ronzoni Vandross.

5 out of 5 stars Dance with My Father is by far the greatest CD .......2006-07-02

Ultimately Amazing. Luther showed the world that not only is he a talented singer but a talented songwriter as well.I would have paid full price for just the 1st cut alone! "If I Didn't Know Better" is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes, I wondered if I would get to the rest of the CD. When I did, I knew I had to do something that I've never done! That was this! This CD is worth the time it takes to log on and write a review, Luther deserves phrase for this masterpiece!

The people who appear on this CD are inspirational and come across in ways that never caught my attention before. Beyonce is a treasure and has never sounded better to me, than when her voice blends so perfectly with Luther's voice. What they did with," The Closer I Get To You" is mind blowing!!! I never thought that song could be better than the original version! The bass was a great touch. If you never purchased a Luther Vandross CD before, don't miss this one!

4 out of 5 stars A Few Bright Moments.......2006-03-03

This album was Luther Vandross's last original album prior to his death in 2005. This album has moments where it reaches for something special. The rest of the album is okay, but just average.

The best songs on this album are "If It Ain't One Thing" with guest singer Foxy Brown, "Buy Me a Rose," "The Closer I get to You" with guest singer Beyonce Knowles, "Lovely Day" with guest singer Busta Rhymes, which may be the best song on this CD, "Dance with My Father," "Hit It Again" with Queen Latifah, and "They Said You Needed Me." These are only seven of the fourteen songs. Of these seven songs, four have featured artists. The problem I have with this album is that the rest of the music is average and unremarkable.

Luther managed to put enough power into the song "Dance with My Father" to gain the 2004 Grammy for "Song of the Year," deservedly so. This album also gained Vandross his fourth and final Best Male R&B Vocal Performance Grammy in 2004. This album was also Vandross's first to reach number one on the Billboard chart. This recognition is for the powerful music on this CD.

Luther Vandross has always been a crooner with an incredible ability to appeal to female listeners. I suspect that the better songs on this album will provide appeal to Luther Vandross's traditional fans and many casual fans. However, Luther Vandross failed to put himself into many of these songs, and the lack of inspiration shows. I recommend you borrow a copy of this album or listen to samples before buying it. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Luther Vandross: Dance with my Father.......2005-09-19

Artist: Luther Vandross

Album: Dance with My Father

This album is a mix of Luther's old-school R&B combined with some of today's R&B. There are old and new artists feature with Luther. These artists add some new R&B and hip hop beats with Luther. Luther keeps his reputation of being romantic. This album can be played at dinner or in the bedroom. He still gives tips on how to treat a lady. He has a wide variety of topics on this album. There are songs of breaking up: If It Ain't One Thing, making up: Buy Me a Rose, and songs of making love: Hit It Again. Of course, he has songs about love in general: Right in the Middle, Think About You, and Lovely Day. One song that seems to stick out a bit on this album is the song that the album is named after: Dance with My Father. This song deals with the loss of his father and some of his great memories. He speaks to the lord and asks for one more dance.
This is a great album. The new artists add a great touch. Queen Latifah is featured on the track Hit It Again. Busta Rhymes appears on the tracks Lovely Day and Lovely Day Part II. Foxy Brown and Luther are a duet in If It Ain't One Thing. I love the mix of R&B and hip hop, but there are still great slow songs. Luther is great at describing feelings of love, and really knows how to express emotion.
If you like artists like Joe, Genuine, R. Kelly, and Kem. If you like old R&B as well as new with a little mix of hip hop, you will love this album. This is a great album for setting a mood for dinner or the bedroom. Parents beware of the track Hit It Again. It is a little promiscuous.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Luther Vandross.......2007-07-16

Some of his best work! He had such a smoothe yet dynamic voice. He is missed by all who enjoy good, soulful, heart stirring music!

3 out of 5 stars Great music, poor album title though!!!.......2007-06-09

When a disc has the word "ultimate" in its title, it should be expected to encompass the best, if not all, in an artist's collection. Sadly, though the release is representative of many of the hits in Vandross's lengthy and stellar career, it is lacking so many others that the title is a misnomer.

Boasting only two "new" tracks, the others, as has been stated before, can be found on other compilations, along with the ones that should've been included here.

Luther deserved a better "tribute." Hopefully, a real ULTIMATE PACKAGE will be forthcoming!

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 star collection of hits .......2006-12-20

There is no denying that the man can sing his @$# off. Now most of the music I listen to is hip-hop I love some of the R&B/oldies/Motown music and Luther is one of my favorites. Since most of his material was out shortly before I was born or when I was still a little kid I knew a lot of his songs and this Hits collection was a good one for me to have. While he has many of fine songs and as with most hits albums, there are some I'd have liked on here and a few I don't like as much. With 18 songs on here spanning his great career, you get 3 classics, 1 almost classic song, 6 I think are average, and the rest are good or mostly real good songs. Production on here is nice as well and I still think my favorites of his is how he takes more upbeat tracks and makes them love songs (I think he does this better than anyone else ever has), but he still has some nice slower ones and some great duets (even though I'm not really a fan of these type of songs there's no question they were huge hits). This is a must have from an R&B legend.

#1 - 9 (a nice upbeat new song)
#2 - 8.5 (another unreleased one)
#3 - 10 (CLASSIC - great upbeat party track)
#4 - 9
#5 - 6.5
#6 - 10 (CLASSIC and my personal favorite of his - great beat)
#7 - 10 (CLASSIC - very deep and personal song dedicated tyo his Dad)
#8 - 7
#9 - 9 (another upbeat one)
#10 - 9
#11 - 9 (a nice upbeat one again)
#12 - 8.5 (another upbeat good one)
#13 - 8
#14 - 6.5
#15 - 9.5
#16 - 7 (duet with Beyonce)
#17 - 7
#18 - 6 (duet with Mariah Carey)

Great CD. Heard a few tracks while in my sister-in-law's car and decided that I just had to have it. Was not disappointed when I heard the whole CD. My sister just picked up her copy recently.

5 out of 5 stars Amen to that!.......2006-06-18

I'd have to agree wholeheartedly with the review submitted by Distant Voyaguer. Unfortunately, Luther Vandross has passed on since, but what's the purpose of having all these various compilations of his music, and TWO 2-disc versions of his music. Everyone who isn't totally deaf knows that Luther Vandross' singing was phenomenal, spectacular, amazing, but come on! Even the most timeless songs can get tiring if they appear on 50 different albums. There is some variation between what songs you can get from either 2-disc compilation, but think for a second. Both have:
1. So Amazing
2. Any Love
3. There's Nothing Better Than Love
4. Here and Now
5. Give Me The Reason
6. So Amazing
7. If This World Were Mine
8. Never Too Much
9. A House Is Not a Home
10. Since I Lost My Baby
11. If Only for One Night

There are probably more, but those eleven are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. You really couldn't go wrong with either collection, but having both would be incredibly redundant. 'She's So Good To Me', which I hadn't heard in 18 years until this album was released, has a lot do to with my preference for this one. There are also songs from the Power Of Love album, not yet released when the first 2-disc set was released, as well as 'For You To Love', and 'Wait for Love' that tipped the scales in this album's favor. Either album is great, but I wouldn't recommend getting both unless you're an absolute Luther Vandross completionist.

5 out of 5 stars Luther Will Not Be Forgotten!.......2005-12-02

"Essiential Luther Vandross" is the best collection of Luther Vandross songs you could find. There have been several others, but most of them falls flat since they don't cover too alot of his work, this double album does however and it was released in 2003, so apart from the "Dance With My Father" album it got most of his hits.

Luther Vandross gre up idolizing the likes of Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. He always sang and was part of a Bronx band at a young age, in the 70's he started writing music for others and to sing backround vocals. He did so for David Bowie, on his "Young Americans" in the 70's, Bowie was mighty impressed with Luther's fantastic voice. He eventuall started recording himself and the first two albums under the name "Luther" came out in the late 70's for a low budget company, but didnt't give him much success. He recorded and sang Commercial jingled and appeared as a guest singer for the band "Change". Finally, in 1981 he was offerred a lucurative record deal for Epic and his official debut album "Never Too Much" was released. It was a album with many uptempo songs and the title track became his first hit. A cover of his idol's Warwich "A House is not a Home" became a hit aswell. His upcoming 2 albums were also great "Forever, For Always, For Love" gave the hits "Since I Lost My Baby" a Temptation remake and the self penned uptempo "She Loves me Back". At the same time he had big success with a Cheryl Lynn duet called "If This World Were Mine", but it didn't appear on album. On "Busy Body", a remake of Carpenters "Superstar" was the standout. He also got the chance to record a duet with Dionne Warwick in "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye". On his 1986 album "Give me the Reason" he had 2 #1 singled on the R&b charts., "Stop to Love" and a Gregory Hines duet "There's Nothing Better the Love" But it was exclusively on the R&B Charts that Luther had success, it wasn't until the late 80's that he went more into mainstream music.

the Ballad "Any Love" from 1988, hit 44 on the pop charts and was the start of a new episode. In 1991 "Don't Want To Be A Fool" was released, it hit #9 on the pop charts. In 1992 a duet with Janet Jackson was recorded "Best Things in Life Are Free", which is missing here. It became on of his biggest hit singles. In 1994, a colmpilation with exclusively performed personal favorites was released "Love the One You're With" "Always And Forever" and "Endless Love" a fantastic duet with Mariah Carey. "Your Secret Love" from 1996 also appears here. It was awarded Best Male R&B Vocal the same year. He continued making solid music during the rest of the 90's, an eponymous album was released in 2001 and gave some minor success. In 2003 he recorded the award winning "Dance With My Father" an album made for the memory of his father that died when Luther was 8 years old. The title track, written together with Richard Marx won a grammy for Song of the Year". The album was a warm comebcack for Luther after struggles with his health the same year. Sadly it became his last album aswell. Luther died in 2005 of complications from a stroke. We lost one of the greatest male singers of our time. He will not be forgotten!

Overall. Good collection, I miss "Best Things in Life are Free" but other then that, it coveres everything you could ask for. It's the best of Luther collections and suits well in your music collection.

Album Description

"So Amazing" is a collection of the most memorable hits from Vandross' musical legacy. Artists and songs featured on the album include Mary J. Blige ("Never Too Much"), Aretha Franklin ("A House Is Not A Home"), Usher ("Superstar"), Beyonce & Stevie Wonder ("So Amazing"), Alicia Keys ("If This World Was Mine" - duet with Jermaine Paul), Donna Summer ("Power of Love"), Celine Dion ("Dance With My Father"), Patti LaBelle ("Here and Now"), Jamie Foxx ("Creepin"), Elton John ("Anyone Who Had A Heart" - duet with Luther's original vocals), Fantasia ("Til My Baby Comes Home"), John Legend ("Love Won't Let Me Wait"), Babyface ("If Only For One Night"), Angie Stone ("Since I Lost my baby") and Wyclef Jean ("Always and Forever").

Luther Vandross was undeniably one of the most significant balladeers of our time. Since the 1981 platinum-selling release of "Never Too Much," Luther's recording career spanned over two decades and resulted in a lifetime of chart topping hits. Through the 1980's, he recorded a string of platinum albums, including "Forever, For Always, For Love," "Busy Body" and "The Night I Fell In Love." He scored his first Grammy Award in 1989 with "Here And Now." His last studio album, 2003's "Dance With My Father," received 4 Grammy Awards (including Song of the Year for the title song "Dance With My Father") and has generated worldwide sales exceeding 3 million copies. Collectively, Luther's body of work has sold in excess of 30 millions records worldwide, winning eight Grammy Awards, numerous Soul Train, BET, NAACP Image Awards and American Music Awards. Vandross died on July 1, 2005 from complications from the stroke he suffered in 2003. He was 54.

5 out of 5 stars Luther would love it.......2007-06-28

I don't know if the album was finished in time for Luther to hear it, but he would have loved it. Let's bow down for the Queen of Soul's "House is Not a Home"- with her bluesy-gospel styling- this alone is worth the price of admission. I can see myself standing on the concert hall chair screaming "sang girl!"

There is variety-"Anyone who had a heart" is sung along with Luther, a la Natalie Cole/NK Cole (Unforgettable), a reggae beat covers one song, a disco beat covers another. A myriad of styles abound, and you'll think "Oh, that's a cool way to redo that song!" Luther would move and groove to it, he would smile and be proud, as I am.

5 out of 5 stars So Amazing!.......2007-05-12

An absolute must for all Luther fans. I was very impressed with Usher singing Superstar and of course the haunting voice of Stevie Wonder on So Amazing is awesome. A real gem for the collection.

3 out of 5 stars Ok CD.......2007-03-08

This CD is not as great as I thought it would be...not all the guest artist's on this CD did justice to Luther's tunes, it would almost appear that I'm judging contestants on American Idol.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collabration.......2007-03-06

Well, this CD really does do Luther Vandross justice. All the artists have done him proud. Recommend this to all Luther Vandross followers.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for a Job Well Done.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent tribute to Mr. Luther Vandross from very talented Musicians! You could feel the respect for his music done in a way that I think Luther would have been very proud to hear.

5 out of 5 stars My Number One.......2007-06-20

I live in a little village in a small country many thousand miles away from Luther. But from the first day I listened to him singing the song 'Here and Now' many years ago, he has remained My Number One.No male vocalist today can match the sheer talent he was gifted with.

And I especially treasure this 'live album' because I never had the chance to see him perform on stage.Disappointed initially that it wasn't made into a music video, I found that with no visual distractions, the senses are more alert to every word, every pause, every scream in the crowd. To just hear him talk was thrilling. And I was laughing at his jokes!

This album is like Luther's musical history. Opening with 'Never Too Much', the song which catapulted him to fame, then a slower version of 'Here and Now' and then sharing some jokes with Kevin Owens and his
background singers before continuing with the seductive 'Take You Out'.
The ballads 'Love Won't Let Me Wait' and 'superstar' are stunningly beautifully ( there won't be enough adjectives to describe them ) sung as only Luther can do.

The audience was screaming ' We love you Luther' throughout the performance and I felt like doing the same too.By the time he had finished 'If Only For One Night', 'A House Is Not A Home' and 'Glow Of Love' and said "goodnight everybody, thanks for coming" , I was left speechless and breathless as if I was sitting right there in the audience.

It's been two years since he's been gone but he's still My Number One.

5 out of 5 stars AN AWESOME END TO A STELLAR CAREER.......2007-02-21

I've always loved Luther, although I wouldn't consider myself a fanatic.
Suffice it to say I've enjoyed MOST of his output. Vocally, he is the
last of the great male R&B vocalists, IMHO. No one since has come close
to his silky, sensitive yet powerful vocalizing. That said, I think this
CD stands as one of LV's very best. It has everything you want in a
live CD: great sound, great song selection, AMAZING vocals and that vibe
that makes you wish you'd been there that night. I highly recommend it
to Luther fans everywhere. Listen to the soundclips and see for yourself.
We miss you Luther, and we'll never forget you!

4 out of 5 stars Good Luther.......2007-01-18

This is ok. For some reason of allmy Luther, this wasnt as Great as i expected. Could be longer with more songs and is about an 80%.
I expected more just looking at the cover.
Not Bad, just Not as Super as I ecpected. Buy the Wembly Stadium Live show Its Just what you want and Superb Live.

5 out of 5 stars A Non-Believer .......2007-01-09

I must admit that I had heard Mr Vandross coming to my city to do a concert. Scores of people would go...for what I asked? I was talking to a relative and she said he likes to do concerts. So what was all the fuss about? Then I heard "A House Is Not A Home." I knew Dionne Warwick had me enticed when she did it...but this man......He gave this song new meaning. Fortunately, for me my Aunt called me up and said Luther is coming to town. Well, Well, so Mr. Vandross will be here. I must go and hear him sing this 'signature song'. I called up and nearly dropped when I heard the price of the tickets. Decided against going until the lady said I have Front Row Center Seats !!!!!! Did I buy my ticket...yes I did!!
Front row center can have you spellbound....but I will admit...His concert was good...but I didn't know a single song, except "A House Is Not A Home" !! I was shamed...and... I was not a fan of his. So I went with a looking and inquiring mind to hear this creamy voiced singer.

I was not disappointed... but kept waiting for the signature song. It finally came with the theatrics and Mr. Vandross walking across the stage from left to right with intermittenent sounds of ""Oh""... in front of the microphone then to the other side and back in front of the microphone with another loud ""Oh"". My mind said..... He's setting us up for the kill...and he did more than that. I felt like someone just had made love to me, begged me. seduced me, and caressed my mind...first...then body ...and then soul. This man knew how to use his voice , was truly Gifted and A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. His backup singers were absent and the soul catching , dramatic voice and sounds of Luther were there alone on the stage (not to forget the band).

I came thee seeking, and I found... However while the crowd gave him a standing ovation for his intrepretation of a song of a man in love with a woman that had made a mistake.......I just melted in my resolve and knew that I would be a life long believer and fan of Luther Vandross.

Being in the front row center seat...Mr Vandross had a good view of my calm reactions (being I didn't know any of the songs he sang...so I just relaxed and sat back in my seat to be entertained.) When the evening was over...he clapped with the audience....thanked them for coming...and before he left the stage...Mr Luther Vandross looked RIGHT AT ME....SMILED HIS PEARLY WHITES AND SAID """GOODNIGHT"""................. Now I must admit the concert and A House Is Not A Home ..blew me away, but for him to say Goodnight......left no doubt in my mind...I was looked at and smiled by a celebrity last....and by a GENTLEMAN first!!!!!

Now you have read my story of me and Mr.Luther Vandross. I went out after that concert and bought mostof all the songs he recorded..and played them until they got scratched up. The DVD at Wembly was EXCELLENT.....the man can dance when he wants too.(smile) I just wish someone would make a dvd of this cd available...so far I have heard nothing...but I brought this cd and it's **7 STAR PERFECT**. I've played it over and over and over again. Superstar is his favorite to do and Nat Adderly is.....out of this world.... and nobody does it better than Luther..someone on here wrote "Only Luther can outdo Luther." Then I accidently left it at my daughter's house, but not to be dismayed...just got another copy. So I will eventually have 2 copies of this magnificent cd of the Late Luther Vandross. I have the studio version of most of these songs on this cd. but hearing him do it ""Live "", packs such a powerful punch !!!!I know that he danced with his father again... when he saw him ....and is now waiting for his mother so that they all can dance together again ...... FOR ETERNITY.

Thanks for reading my long review....My favorite songs...they all are..but "Stop... to Love" and his Signature song are echoed in my mind FOREVER !!!

With this 1981 debut, former session and jingle singer Luther Vandross ushered in a new, lush, and shamelessly romantic era of male R&B--from the opening kick of "Never Too Much" to the sweeping ecstasy of his cover of "A House Is Not a Home" (covering pop standards would become one of Luther's trademarks). Never Too Much showcases seamless song craft, impeccable arrangements, and a voice that defines nuanced passion. Listen to Luther work his sensual magic and imagine a young Maxwell listening to Mom and Pop's albums and knowing that this is the way to get the girls. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Luther's Early Years Revisited.......2007-07-30

For those who collect EVERYTHING Luther has done, I offer the following info in case you don't already have it. Luther did so much session work as a backup singer and/or arranger, that it would take days to list it all. So I am just listing the highlights. In 1973 Luther recorded a duet with Delores Hall on her LP "HALL MARK". The song is "WHO'S GONNA MAKE IT EASIER FOR ME?". In 1976 Luther formed a quintet and released an album on the Cotillion label called "LUTHER". Then as a trio, Luther released another LP called "LUTHER- THIS CLOSE TO YOU" in 1977. In 1979 Luther appeared on the following soundtrack- "SUNNYSIDE - THE NEW YORK CITY BAND" (a movie starring John Travolta's brother Joey in a teen drama). I don't know if it is a solo song or what. I do know he was part of the group THE NEW YORK CITY BAND and sang lead on some of their songs. And of course it is well-known he sang lead on a couple songs when he was part of the group CHANGE. He sings lead on 2 songs from their 1980 debut album- "THE GLOW OF LOVE", and those songs are "SEARCHING" and "THE GLOW OF LOVE". The following year he released his debut album "NEVER TOO MUCH". And what a debut.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-07-17

This is still Luther's best CD. Many of his other CDs come close, but this is still the best overall. I recommend this CD to all, especially to aspiring singers. This CD is the blueprint to singing.

4 out of 5 stars Luther is the man.......2007-04-10

This album came out when I was a junior in high school, growing up in Atlanta, a time when the black population there was growing into a more sophisticated, classy style. I had already heard Luther with Change (I LOVE Change!) and was getting into that style of music. Buying this CD brought back all the memories. The music, of course, was a hint of the smooth, sophisticated style Luther, Nat Adderly Jr and Marcus Miller would perfect. The songs are amazing for their freshness and ability to make women swoon. I love it. I can't give it 5 stars because it isn't as good as "Forever, For Always, For Love" or "The Night I Fell In Love," but it is magnificent in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DEBUT FROM A GREAT SINGER/WRITER/ARRANGER/ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-05

It wasn't his first debut on album. But it was his debut as
the leader of his own thang.Hooking up with some of the best session musicians and singers in the business.A hookup lasting through later and many albums.Which is one of the things i liked about Luther.Keepin' the same group or core of people on each album. There's a security to that.A familiar/particular sound.
One of those musicians---Marcus Miller(The best bassist ever)
Leads those grooves on this album and many to come.Luther's partner in crime. When they get together. It's magic.

Never too much-Maybe Luther's sig.song. Is a classic

Sugar and Spice-Great anthem about finding your love and doin' what it takes to be wit' them

Don't you know that?-Confessing your love and devotion

I've been workin'-Needing love after the workday is through
Killer bassline. Hell! All Marcus's are killer

She's a superlady-Title says it all.A Woman all man must have and need

Until you stopped loving me-Breakup and Heartbreak

A House is not a home-A beautiful remake in a line of others that Luther will do on every album. It had me weeping months ago.
Cause his death finally sunk in.

This album is the first in what I like to call "Gettin' to know Luther trilogy"Which are his first four albums. They sum up the fact that he's "LUTHER"

Luther was- Hell! Is my fav.sing.Every since I could walk,I knew of this man from my parents.I'm 25 now.So Luther was apart of my 80's /90's childhood. His passing makes you appreaciate him more. But for me.I always appreaciated him when he was alive.
Listening to all his albums back to back ,all day,non-stop.
He had a voice like no other.Original and cool.I liked his style and approached to the music.I'll miss him and forever and for always. Buy this album y'all!!!!
RIP Luther!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Solo Debut!!.......2005-11-19

What is there to say about this project that has not been said before? It is nothing short of a work of soul music classic. It is by far one of Luther's best project. This actual purchase for this project will personally be my 3rd time buying it. the 1st time of course was on vinyl, the 2nd was on the first compact disc version, now the 3rd copy will be a REMASTERED VERSION!!
the record company finally heard my prayers, I wonder will Warner Bros start REMASTERING early Prince Projects...

By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden

Wonderful way to end a long day with someone you love. He was one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars Another Luther masterpiece.......2006-12-14

By 1985 Luther Vandross was the premier ballader in R&B. This album spawned four Billboard R&B singles in "'Til My Baby Comes Home," "It's Over Now," "Wait for Love," and "If Only for One Night." It also featured "Creepin" but Luther's the best at ballads in particular If Only For One Night.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Luther's best.......2006-10-21

The fourth album in what I like to call"The getting to know Luther Trilogy".Four albums that define and sum up this man.We know as "Luther"

1.Never Too Much 1981
2.Forever,For Always,For Love 1982
3.Busy Body 1983
4.The Night I fell in Love 1985

I could never pick a fav.Luther album. But This one and Busy Body are my favs.

I was 4 years old when this came out.Luther was one the few artists as a child that I recognized. My parents played this and Busy Body alot.So those two albums introduced me Luther.

Til' my Baby comes home-Song about waiting on your baby.Every girl coming onto you.But No.My girl is plenty.

The Night I fell in love-Funky drum programmed and bass playing by my boy
Marcus Miller.Everybody has a time when they first fell in love.So u could relate and reminisce wit' Luther.

If only for one night-Longing,needing,wanting to be wit that woman badly.
Secs,minutes,hours,one day,one night.

Creepin-Stevie wonder remake with a jazzed out appeal. That girl is in everywhere I go.Dreams,Thoughts,Feelings

It's over Now-Funk Jam with some more heavy bass lines from Marcus Miller.
Woman cheating on you with not one but two guys. It's over baby.

Wait for love-If you can't find love.Don't worry.Don't rush.It'll find you.

My Sensitivity-Emotions take control sometimes when you like or love somebody so much.

The other side of the world-you never know where you'll find love.Right under your nose.

I have to say this is the last fully R&B album Luther would do.Venturing into pop in his future albums.

This is the Luther I'll always remember.Jheri Curled,Goatee.

RIP Luther

The classiest of R&B's lover men, Luther Vandross eschews the sweaty soul intensity of his predecessors for a silky-smooth sound that achieves its romantic aims nonetheless. In the hands of a lesser artist, Vandross's narrow focus on love songs would seem restrictive, but he somehow finds endlessly entertaining ways of conveying simple messages like "I love you," "I miss you," and "Why did you leave me?" The Best of Love is just that--a 20-song retrospective that clocks Vandross's brilliant career through its first decade, including such gems as his gorgeous reworking of the Bacharach-David chestnut "A House Is Not a Home," Smokey Robinson's "Since I Lost My Baby," and his own early hit "Never Too Much." Vandross was a staple on the R&B charts throughout the '80s, but the set culminates with "Here and Now," his 1989 crossover smash. Since then, Luther has belonged to everyone; this set shows it should have been that way all along. --Daniel Durchholz

There are plenty LV compilations out there, but I've had this one since it was released. And it sounds pretty good to me.I could complain about this song or that song not being on here but instead I'll talk about what IS here. This collection was released in 1989 so it covers LV 1981-1989.A couple of Change tracks from 1980 make it 1980-1989.
Can you honestly look at the song listing above and say something like "Yuck, that don't sound like it's right..." Yeah, right.

In closing I'll say this:Of the 20 tracks, the weakest selection in my opinion is "Treat You Right".Next to the other 19 tracks,it's a litle lacking.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Blessing.......2006-05-30

The death of Marvin Gaye left a hole in the R&B community that has never been filled, and R&B has been in decline ever since. Babyface is frankly too effeminate to step up; Luther Vandross was our best hope. Vandross was irrefutably male, had a great voice, and possessed amazing sensitivity. Unfortunately he was the victim of inconsistent material and goopy overproduction. This 2-CD anthology demonstrates the syndrome, when it's good, it's frighteningly good, but it's frequently bad and sometimes awful.

The cover of Marvin Gaye's If This World Were Mine sounds like it's on Quaaludes, simply soporific. The same could be said of Superstar, which is a dreadful song to begin with and here is stretched to the point where you're begging it to stop. A House Is Not A Home is equally slow, but the production is sparse and Vandross is free to nurse the genuine emotion from it. The jewel on Disk One is `Til My Baby Comes Home, good funk and purpose. Disk Two provides much more to be happy about. Stop To Love cooks, So Amazing is a three-hankie masterpiece, Give Me A Reason is one of those satisfying feeling-bitter kickers, and Any Love has a beautiful, anthemic quality. In short, this two-CD anthology embodies Luther's career perfectly. With better management and material Vandross really could have deserved a 2-CD Best Of anthology. As it is, what you have here is enough material to fill a superb single CD Best Of anthology. As far as I'm concerned, that still makes it a value, and well worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars Luther: Tried and True.......2006-01-31

It's the rich, full voice of "classic" Luther all in one collection. The tracks aren't digitally remastered so the older ones sound a little flat. But I still recommend it as part of any "old school" collection.

This was the second time that I bought this CD. My husband "borrowed" the first one for an extended time. One Night with You has slow songs and a few upbeat ones as well. I thoroughly enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Still For The Love.......2006-06-30

These days, the music industry seems to be more about gloss, rather than the elegance of someone and the most important thing of them all, the voice. Yet, it is also sad that within that voice, this past year we've lost some great soulful singers like Lou Rawls, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, and recently Luther Vandross. It is very sad though because this July marks one year ago, that the world lost one of the most gifted singers ever in not just R&B, but the world of music in total. Yet, his era with Sony cmae to an end in the 90's and he brought out some great songs to match. This collection sums the second half of it.

One Night With You: The Best Of Love Volume 2 is a well-rendered reflection of Luther Vandross, and the era that he had made in the 90's with his career. The album was re-released as part of SonyBMG's The Hits series, and the songs sound great. The album includes classics like Power Of Love / Love Power, Don't Want To Be A Fool, his remake of Lionel Richie & Diana Ross' Endless Love with Mariah Carey, and Always And Forever. Whiele the collection does deliver nicely, there still were a couple of tracks that weren't highlighted like Going In Circles, and other great tracks.

Despite a few flaws, One Night With You: The Best Of Love Volume 2 is a good reflection of Luther's era in the 90's for die hard fans, but it still could've benn better for new fans of the belated, elequent singer. For those, I would recommend the 2003 Essential Luther Vandross collection instead, from the soulful man with the power of love.

4 out of 5 stars The latter years.......2004-08-03

I would actually give this album four-and-a-half stars. The second volume of THE BEST OF LOVE covers most of Luther's nineties hits for Epic, and was his last official release on the label. The impressive stream of hits includes the smash hits "Power of Love/Love Power" (#4 Pop, #1 R&B, #3 Adult Contemporary), "Don't Want To Be a Fool" (#9 Pop, #4 R&B, #14 Adult Contemporary), "The Best Things In Life Are Free" (#10 Pop, #1 R&B, #3 Dance), and "Endless Love" (#2 Pop, #7 R&B, #11 Adult Contemporary). Also included are the R&B hits "Little Miracles" (#62 Pop, #10 R&B) and "Your Secret Love" (#52 Pop, #5 R&B), as well a few lower-charting singles - "Love the One You're With" (#95 Pop, #28 R&B), "Always and Forever" (#58 Pop, #16 R&B, #25 Adult Contemporary), and "I Can Make It Better" (#80 Pop, #15 R&B) - all three of which should have been much more successful.

The disc is rounded out by four newly-recorded songs, an okay remix of "Love Don't Love You," and Luther's exceptional, but out-of-place, rendition of "My Favorite Things." All of the four new songs are fine and nice to have, but only the cut by Jam & Lewis ("I Won't Let You Do That To Me") really stands out. While all of Luther's pop hits from this time period are here, I do wish that more of his R&B and adult contemporary hits, like "The Rush" (#73 Pop, #6 R&B) and "Sometimes It's Only Love" (#9 R&B, #9 Adult Contemporary), were included. However, THE BEST OF LOVE VOLUME 2 covers most of the bases, and is an excellent bookend to the first BEST OF LOVE. Bizarrely, even with the new material included, this compilation only reached #44 on the Hot 200 (Luther's lowest-charting album) and his first not to reach Platinum status in sales.
