A towering figure in postwar American music, for over 40 years James Brown has written, produced, and performed some of the most compelling R&B ever recorded. 20 All Time Greatest Hits! distills Startime!, itself a four-CD set that barely scratched the surface of Brown's prodigious output. As such, this collection concentrates on Brown's best-known records: "I Feel Good," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "Cold Sweat." The propulsive one- or two-chord vamps with Brown's hoarse, declamatory vocals laid the groundwork for modern funk. It's a perfect starter set for anyone unfamiliar with Brown's work. But be warned--Brown is addictive. Like peanuts and potato chips, it's impossible to stop with just one. Buy this and don't be surprised if one day you find yourself scouring used record bins for a rare copy of Grits and Cornbread. --Steven Mirkin
From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
Twenty of the funk and rhythm dynamo's points of light hark back to his upbringing in the poor, deep rural South for their poignant emotional framework. "Night Train," in particular, belongs in sound and feeling to postwar jump grooves, its explosive sexuality every bit equal to that of Jimmy Forrest's 1952 classic. More sizzle: Polydor's aptly titled two-CD Messin' with the Blues and the ultimate bacchanal, Live at the -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

Nice Hits Package.......2007-05-16
More James Brown than most casual fans need, but the price is right for the extra cuts. Look up funk in the dictionary -- it says James Brown!
Git On Uppa.......2007-05-09
This CD arrived on a Saturday before my husband and I started out on one of our weekend joy rides ( At over $3.20 a gallon there is just slightly less joy). We slipped the disc in and right from the very opening notes we were possessed. What a performer. We nearly had to pull the car over and start dancing, we COULD NOT sit still.
I love it when Brown gets so worked up he literally squeals with excitement, it send chills up your spine. I would think that listening to this CD would be more effective than medication for the manic depressive personality.
Pretty Much of Historical Interest Only.......2007-04-14
I found James Brown fairly boring back in the day, and I must admit I still find him fairly boring. Back then though I couldn't have predicted that this kind of music would evolve into fusion or Steely Dan pop. It's probably a large exaggeration to say that James Brown and his musicians invented funk, but it may be reasonable to say that they were its chief--or most visible at least--exemplars.
The instrumental parts are of much more interest than James Brown's quasi-parlando, repetitive vocals. The sound quality is generally better than I expected, and the instrumental parts are generally performed cleanly, but the horns are a bit off in "Make it Funky". There is another tune here in which it sounds as if a horn section crescendo is achieved artificially by riding the faders (on the mixing board)--a disagreeable effect.
These must be some of the silliest lyrics ever written, and I find "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" especially amusingly ridiculous. "Try Me" is supposed to be James Brown's breakthrough tune, but it sounds to me like an utterly conventional, undistinguished fifties recording. At least three of these tracks are essentialy one piece with differing lyrical snippets.
Definitely a must have!.......2007-04-12
I have been enjoying James Brown for over 50 years.
This CD contains MOST of the songs that I have loved and danced to for years. An excellent collection. Whew!
james brown rules.......2007-04-05
This is a collection of james brown at his best. You have to have this!

Red Sovine 20 All Time Greatest Hits.......2007-03-08
I bought this to introduce my kids to someone I listened to as a child. They do enjoy some of the songs, for instance "Teddy Bear" and "Daddy's Girl". It brings back some nice memories for me. My dad liked listening to Red Sovine, I feel like I am back to being a little girl at times when I listen. Very good CD.
Excellent Collection.......2007-02-11
This CD is an excellent collection of Red Sovine's hits. Well worth the price for anyone interested in the genre of music.
Absolutely Wonderful.......2006-07-28
All the best Sovine on one disc. All I hoped for and more.
"Puppy's Girl".......2006-04-17
This song will always bring tears to my eyes. I grew up listing to this music with my grandfather I used to change the words in the son to puppy's girl instead of daddy's girl because that's what he would call me. I wish there were more of the singer/songwriters out like there used to be such as Red Sovine, Hank Wiliams, Charlie Pride etc. There music will never die.
Problems With the Title!.......2006-03-11
Woodrow Wilson ("Red') Sovine, from Charleston, WV had 13 chart hits from 1955-1976. (There were 2 gaps/ dry spells in that span). The only problem is that only 6 of the 13 appear on this compilation! Given those facts, it is difficult to understand how an album of his "20 Greatest Hits" can be produced. Among the actual chart tracks that appear here, this reviewer liked "I Didn't Jump the Fence" (1967) and "It'll Come Back" (1974). 2 nice tracks that failed to hit the charts are "18 Wheels Hummin' Home Sweet Home" and "Daddy's Girl". The latter featured the same child's voice as in "It'll Come Back". Red tries his hand at "Old Rivers" and "I Know Your' Married but I Love You Still" but those were done better by Walter Brennan and Bill Anderson/Jan Howard. The bottom line is that this compilation is unsatisfactory. Why not produce a straight compilation of those 13 hits? This very album contains releases from 3 record labels. How difficult can permissions be? This is the perfect example of why shoppers need to be suspicious of "Greatest Hits" or "The Best Of" titles. This reviewer actually likes Red but one has to call reviews as he sees them, not as he wishes they could be.

Very good CD. Has a variety of music by Sonny James. Easy listening. Recommend to all.
classic country is gold.......2007-04-15
the music is great each and every time you listen to it
Quite possibly the best male voicalist in country music history !.......2007-02-24
Listening to Sonny James never gets old. I have bought thousands of CDs & albums, but Sonny's recordings tops them all. His voice is always in perfect pitch, easily reaching all of the notes without the slightest vocal strain; a feat very few artist can boast of. Being a vocalist & musician myself, I have admired Sonny's music since I was a child. His influence was the driving force that started my musical career and the ride has been wonderful & extremely rewarding. This CD represents some of Sonny's best. Sit back, give it a listen and enjoy some of the best music that has ever been recorded.
The music is really enjoyable.......2007-02-08
This is the first time I am listening to Sonny James' voice and surely I am not a wee bit disappointed. The songs are all good, the kinda music that I like listening to. As a fan of country legends like Jim Reeves, Don Williams, Marty Robbins, etc etc it definitely fits in this genre of music.
Overall, I am satisfied :-)
"Cover" versions, so what?.......2006-12-04
Many of the # 1 records by Sonny James were cover versions of other
artists indeed, but for some reason his versions were far more successful
than the originals on the C&W charts at least. Probably his mellow way of
singing and the easy-listening pleasure these melodies provoke, led to
that huge success of 16 # 1's in a row. Such a fact cannot be ignored by
those saying he was just a mere "cover version" artist. So what? He also
had a string of "own" hits so this discussion is totally out of place.

Fifty years and going strong.......2007-04-13
Hard to believe, but 2007 marks 50 years since The Crests first charted with "Sweetest One", which should have been included on this CD, along with "My Juanita". It's still a great CD, with the amazing voice of Johnny Maestro singing lead, and superb backing vocals from J. T. Carter, Tommy Gough and Hal Torres. If you google "Johnny Maestro", the first listing should be for his official website, and e-mail can be sent to the guys there.
Brilliant.......2007-03-10
As A doo-wop fan reminds me of when of when I was a kid (about5) happy daze!!!!
How great is Johnny Maestro?.......2007-01-09
I can't believe this man's voice. Everything he sings is outstanding!
Wish I could see him in person, locally in Baltimore. Also wish I could email him.
Good but..........2005-03-26
.... it only gets 3 stars because it is missing the essential Crests' first - "My Juanita" from 1958.
Best Sound Yet For Johnny Maestro.......2001-10-20
I have virtually every CD by Johhny Maestro both with the Crests
and with the Brooklyn Bridge. In fact I booked Johnny many years
ago.
This is THE BEST sound quality I have ever heard
for the Crests.Every song is crisp&clear.Mastered with love.
Carey Mansfield and the crew at Varese Sarabande deserve kudos.Mastering by Marty Wekser is crisp and warm unlike other Crests disc which are either muddy 4th Generation or overly boosted and tinney.

Fantastic album.......2005-09-02
These guys are the epitome of country "duet". The harmonies are absolutely phenomonal; it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The Louvin's "Knoxville Girl" is worth the price of this album alone; although there isn't a bad track on the whole CD.
Louvin Brothers - 20 all time greatest hits review.......2005-08-29
I have looked for some of the Louvin Brothers music for a couple of years and was very pleased to find a selection on Amazon. This music is just what I was looking for. I am very pleased with the music, the number of tracks and the sound quality.
Listen to the Louvins!.......2003-08-21
Ira and Charlie Loudermilk from Section, Alabama performed as The Louvin Brothers. According to Billboard, they had 12 chart hits from 1955 to 1962, when they broke up. 9 are right here on this very fine compilation. The other 11 tracks are all enjoyable. The Louvins feature a wonderful tight, almost piercing harmony, a hard banjo sound and moving lyrics. There is an almost frantic tone to the music, virtually demanding the listener's attention. In the Tom T. Hall tradition, many tell a story. This reviewer's favorites were "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face?" and "While You're Cheating On Me". The former was their final chart hit. The latter is a wonderful "cheating" song- a topic representing a veritable treasure trove of country classics. The album also includes "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", their only #1 recording. Ira was tragically killed in a 1965 car crash, caused by a drunk driver. How many country greats have died in car and plane crashes? Charlie carried on for another 9 years, but this reviewer is unfamiliar with his solo work. Together, the brothers made wonderful, if serious music together. As has been written before-since when does country have to cheer you up? Just listen to the Louvins. Those not familiar with their music are encouraged to be adventurous!
Original Capitol Recordings.......2003-03-05
Ira and Charlie's classic harmonies are here in crystal clear sound. Nearly all of their hits and superb album cuts are featured on this 20 song collection. I would like to see Charlies solo work with Capitol records on CD as well. Brother harmony at it's finest. Don't pass this one up!!!

Kitty in good voice.......2007-03-18
even though these are not original recs. Nice sounding and enjoyable. highly recommend. Amigos guitar is awesome.
Not a great remake.......2006-04-30
The young voice is missing on this one. I have some of the same songs on vinyl records. If I had listened to it first, I would not have bought it. It might be OK for someone not familiar with the original recordings.
Great Singer as Always .......2005-09-24
I am really tired of all these people going around and giving one star ratings for every album of remakes just because it's an album of remakes!!! I suppose they would give someone a bad concert review because their live vocals were not the original recording! Judge each individual recording on it's own merits please (1) are the vocals good? (2) are the songs good? (3) is the production good? Ok, these remakes are not as an outstanding a production as the originals yet these are still very enjoyable tracks with Kitty singing remarkably strong well into her senior years.
Beware - Remakes.......2005-05-14
Classic country songs, but not classic performances/productions. Instead these are cheaply produced remakes. If you are at all particular about such concerns as I am keep, keep looking. As seen on TV - who cares?

Yet another disc of re-recordings. It's a good thing I don't keep track of how much money I've wasted buying discs I THOUGHT were the original hits, only to find out they were re-recordings done years later. I turned this one in to my local used CD dealer.

Is this a CD of the original hit songs or is it versions that have been re-recorded? Does anyone know the work of Jack Greene well enough to be able to tell?

Awesome Bobby Vinton Collection.......2005-01-07
This is a great collection of songs. I rate all 20 songs as good or better, with 10 very good or excellent. My favorites are "Please Love Me Forever" and "Rain Rain Go Away". There are many others that I used to like just as much, but the oldies stations play them so much I got kind of tired of them. I only wish "My Melody Of Love" was included, but it is not.
If you like Bobby Vinton, this disc is a good choice.
A CD that truly does have all "hits".......2003-08-22
This is a great CD. It has all of Bobby Vinton's hits. At the same time I purchased this CD I purchased 4 other Greatest Hits CDs by singers from that era and was very disappointed because there were the "hits" but also so many "fillers". I don't understand why they feel they have to do a CD with 30 songs and there are only 6 "hits". Just do a 12 song CD and leave it at that. The other CD that I bought that was just as good as this one was the Bobby Goldsboro one. If you liked Bobby Vinton's music, then do buy this CD you won't be disappointed.
