Great hard rock album! This collection of songs by Maiden are less progressive and a lot more melodic than anything they've done with their last previous efforts. The D'ianno years are still my favorite though but not bad for a Dickinson record.

2 out of 5 stars One of the worst Maiden albums.......2007-04-10

What the heck happened to Maiden on this album? OK, so they lost Adrian Smith, who was a great & versatile guitarist and replaced him with Janick Gers, who is basically just a generic heavy metal guitarist, but that doesn't explain why this album is so horrible. The lyrics are pathetic and the music is just sub-standard for Maiden. To me, this album seems like it wants to go in the direction of Bruce Dickinson's first solo album ("Tattooed Millionaire") but can't quite get there.

"Tailgunner" is a good song, but that's about it. Just pass on this one; nearly every Maiden album before and after it is a lot better (except for "Virtual XI", maybe).

3 out of 5 stars Average maiden is still better than pretty much everything else.......2007-04-06

This is the turning point album in Maidens career I think. SSOASS was the last album with the classic line up, Adrian smith left before this one was made, and only had a hand in writing "Hooks In You". the album is absent of a killer epic, mother russia is the epic on this album and it is weak to say the least. and although the singles tailgunner, holy smoke, and BYDTTS are good, they dont meet the same standards set by Maiden of old. And although Bruce still has the strong voice we all know and love, he seems to be trying something new in sound and approach, which he will continue in FOTD album. I am not too fond of it.Im not trying to sound like one of those negative ninnies complaining about how they changed their sound or they arent like they used to be. This is a good album worthy of a purchase, its just nothing special. and contrary to some peoples reviews, this was not the end of maiden, cause they are still coming out with good albums. i feel brave new world and a matter of life and death are up there with the classic stuff. and you cant have every album be a classic. every band has gone through a slump. and as i said before maiden in a slump is better than half of whats out there on good days.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album from Iron Maiden!!!!!!.......2007-01-27

This is studio album number eight for them. This album is just a good straight ahead album. The band just wanted to make straight ahead rock songs,I don't see why that is a bad thing. Is it bad because it doesn't take you to three different worlds like Powerslave, Somewhere In Time,Seventh Son did.Stop bitching about Bruce too, because he sounds just as good as always. They whine because he isn't singing like he did in the 80's,he wanted to take a more raspier style of vocals,I don't see why that is bad. This album shows another side of Iron Maiden, instead of getting proggresive metal like (The X-Fator, Virtual XI,Brave New World,Dance of Death, or A Matter of Life And Death)you get more raw music which is needed every once and a while. The absence of Adrian Smith on this album isn't all that bad because they just want to rock out a little more. Why do you people hate songs like Holy Smoke and Bring Your Daughter...To The Slaughter,is it because they are not up to their standards. You have to look at them in a different way,and I guarantee you like them if you just look at them in a different view.Just a good straight ahead rock album. 4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2005-05-12

The only reason why I didn't give these guys 5 stars was because I just don't hand them out like that. However, this is a killer album, and it's refreshing to hear new bands producing music like this.

I was actually in my local heavy metal record store, (yes they still exist) and they had this cd playing on their system. I asked them what it was and they showed me so I bought it. Nothing revolutionary here, but it was good enough for me to listen a few dozen times. It reminds me of Judas Priest with a heavier sound and a little more coming from the production end of the music. This is their only album that I own, and I'm not even sure if they have other stuff. I'm willing to bet if you grew up listening to bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest you would definitely like this cd.

'Dream Evil' is a favorite of mine - it reminds me of mid-80's Testament. It has that thrash meets NWBHM sound, and also just as with Testament, you get different sounding songs on albums, which is also what you get with this disc.

'Thunderball' sounds so much like Judas Priest, I can't believe it! It sounds like Priest was meant to do this song - especially on the chorus.

The title track is my favorite here. This is an awesome song - a real headbanger-classic! When they sing the line "When night comes down" it makes me feel like I'm at a Scorpions concert.

Like I said, these guys are really great if you like Judas Priest or other classic metal, but it doesn't get 5 stars from me because I don't think they have an original sound. With a shortage of good metal these days, though, these guys should be able to get some type of strong following.

5 out of 5 stars Very expertly done power metal.......2004-07-03

This is an excellent CD. Imagine a sound which is 60% Judas Priest, 30% Accept, and 10% Saxon. That combination equals 100% good. Not to say that their music is simply an imitation of these other bands. The songs are well-crafted with crunching guitar riffs, but also with some atmospheric melodies and catchy choruses. If you're a fan of Judas Priest and Accept then you will like Messiah's Kiss too.

5 out of 5 stars I'm not over exaggerating..........2004-03-10

This cd really does deserve 5 stars, and it seems weird that these guys aren't more popular. I heard of Messiah's Kiss by accident. While browsing for Dream Evil stuff, I found not the band, but a song of the same name, by Messiah's Kiss. I was curious, and bought the album. Why? I love heavy metal! This truly is worth every cent of your money. This is as heavy as it gets, with a great singer. You will like every song on this album, and you'll put Dream Evil on repeat and listen to it all day long and it will never get old.

This EP for the self-titled album has an alternate piano version of Dreaming in Metaphors not released elsewhere.

Track listing is:

1) Prayer for the Dying
2) Dreaming in Metaphors (piano version)

Track 1 is from the s/t album: Seal. Track 2 is an alternate version not available elsewhere (the regular released version of this song ison the same album).

4 out of 5 stars Dark Melody.......2003-07-11

There is no doubt about Seal's talent throught the early 90's. After the success from his first record, Seal, he needed to find a way to duplicate the feel from his first record. With the opening single from his second self-title record, Seal on the line, it was a way to get his soul burning again. Prayer For The Dying is a very dark, soulful song that captures the feel of the artist. Still, it almost sounds as dark as Crazy did from his first record. Still, it was a minor hit, until Kiss From A Rose came along. However, this song is truly for any die hard Seal fan.

5 out of 5 stars What's wrong with this album?.......2005-07-07

I love it. It was a time of major changes for Iron Maiden: First change in lineup since "Piece Of Mind", and with new guitarist Janick Guers they went back to a more raw sound... It's sounds almost like their first album. Also at that point, Bruce Dickinson gave up all the high pitch wailing that makes a lot of people hate Maiden, and he went for deeper, angrier vocals. He finally reveals his sense of humour with those "Hee!Hees!".
After all those extremely successful albums, all they could do was decline, but "No Prayer For The Dying" includes their ONLY #1 HIT SINGLE "Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter". Come On... Isn't that a great song?
Once again, the people who hate this album are the music fascists who can't accept changes and would have liked another classic album with Adrian Smith on guitar... GET A LIFE!

P.S.: That new cover is rubbish. The man being strangled has been wiped away. Now Eddie isn't strangling anything. He looks like a pathetic zombie.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY underated album.......2003-09-14

While this album doesnt cover any new grounds,it takes you back on some old ones.Listen closely to a lot of these songs and you can here elements of everything from the first iron maiden album,up to Powerslave. The lyrics are NOT what maiden usually write but the song structures hold these songs together really well.Even though i'm not a big Janick Ger's fan,he doesnt ruin the album, its saved by creative Harmony parts along with Nicko's signature drumming...some great high-hat work and the big drum sound that he used on Piece of Mind. And Bruce try's out a harsh new vocal style...a lot of people don't like...but i think it fits here rather well.Where people get that the production is FLAT i'll never know.To me the production on Fear of the Dark was FAR worse. But all in all lots of good stuff here,Run Silent Run Deep,The Assassin,Fates Warning,Tailgunner.About the only song's i don't care for a whole lot is Holy Smoke or Hook's in You,lyrically speaking, but hey lyrics alone DON'T make a good album. And this one i like a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Un Album SOTTOVALUTATO.......2003-08-28

Estremamente godibile. 3,5/5

03.NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING - In assoluto uno dei brani migliori dell'intero disco. Melodico ma aggressivo, riflessivo ed esplosivo. Un ulteriore passo avanti nella stesura delle liriche ora più intimiste e mature. Ottima Title Track. 5/5

04.PUBLIC ENEMA #1 - Un assalto chitarristico dalla luminosa belezza. Il chorus esplode accompagnato dall'ottimo bridge. Un brano costruito in maniera impeccabile. 4/5

05.FATES WARNING - L'anello di congiunzione tra il disco precedente e questo. Dall'intro delicata all'esplosione del riff fino all'ottimo chorus. 4/5

06.THE ASSASSIN - Complesso e discretamente poco orecchiabile. Puro Maiden Style in crescita. 3,5/5

07.RUN SILENT RUN DEEP - La cavalcata di terzine che scoppia dopo l'intro non sorregge questo brano che pare a mio avviso un ottimo scarto da qualche disco precedente. Svogliato ma godibile. 2,5/5

08.HOOKS IN YOU - Un riff coinvolgente opera del compianto Adrian Smith. Un brano che continua la saga di Charlotte... Peccato per la voce decisamente sottottono di Bruce. 3,5/5

09.BRING YOUR DAUGHTER... - Personalmente la ritengo la canzone più debole di tutto il disco. Un rock fin troppo poco studiato per garantire anche solo l'impatto. Dal vivo può essere coinvolgente, ma in disco perde tutto, risultanto sterile. 1/5

10.MOTHER RUSSIA - Gli Iron Maiden tornano forzatamente (pare) alle atmosfere complesse e sopra le righe di RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER, passando per ALEXANDER THE GREAT e schiantandosi su SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON. Questo è Mother Russia. Sopra le righe, complesso ma godibile. Forse sottovalutata in quanto posta in chiusura... Da rivalutare. 4/5

In conclusione un album buono, lontano ovviamente dai vecchi exploit ma comunque gradevole e dal ritmo incalzante.

3 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden At Their Most Mediocre........2002-03-29

When talking about "No Prayer For the Dying," there tend to be two camps of Iron Maiden fans. There are those who hate the album, claiming that the songs are the weakest of Maiden's career and that it was the turning point in the band's career, when they went from embodying the greatness of the NWOBHM to being a shadow of what they were, prompting Bruce to leave the band. Then, there are those who love the album, praising it as a return to Maiden's "classic" sound after the synth-driven "Somewhere In Time" and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son."

In truth, "No Prayer For the Dying" is neither. It is the most mediocre album that Iron Maiden have ever produced. It's far better than any of the travesties that followed it ("Fear of the Dark," "The X-Factor," and "Virtual XI") but nowhere near as good as anything that preceded it (or "Brave New World," which was Maiden's true return to form). New guitarist Janick Gers proved himself an ample replacement for Adrian Smith, though he would later show that his skills as a songwriter were significantly weaker than H's. "No Prayer" has its share of decent tracks, but the songs as a collection were nowhere near what Maiden is capable of.

Make no mistake, "No Prayer" suffers from many, many weak songs. "Holy Smoke," a rant against televangelists, is a rather stupid premise for a Maiden song; "Bring Your Daughter . . . to the Slaughter" is a poor song (the original version of the song, found on Bruce's solo "Best Of..." album, is far better) which suffers from a ridiculous title; "Hooks In You" is a poor addition to the "Charlotte the Harlot" series (especially following the masterpiece "22 Acacia Avenue" from "The Number of the Beast"); "The Assassin" has a lame, repetitive chorus (that said, musically, it's a decent song); and the title track is just a generally weak tune.

However, the good songs on this album are REALLY good. "Tailgunner" follows in the tradition of "Where Eagles Dare" and "Aces High" as a classic Maiden fighter pilot song. "Fates' Warning" and "Public Enema Number One" are both strong tracks (despite "Public Enema"'s unfortunate title), as is the epic-sounding "Mother Russia." The true highlight of the album, however - a song that should rightfully have become one of Maiden's all-time classics - is the maritime battle-themed "Run Silent, Run Deep." Building on a strong melody and one of Maiden's all-time top guitar solos, "Run Silent..." should have fit seemlessly into the canon of classic Maiden, yet somehow never received a place of honor on any of Maiden's live albums or their greatest hits collection.

Die-hard Maiden fans need to own "No Prayer For the Dying," if only to fill out their collections. More casual fans may want to find a way to listen to the songs I mentioned as being good before they make a decision on the album. "No Prayer For the Dying" may indeed have been the beginning of the end for Iron Maiden. But if songs like "Tailgunner" and "Run Silent, Run Deep" are what a band is capable of doing at its weakest, that's a pretty good indication of what Maiden can do at their best.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, If You Cut It Some Slack.......2002-03-26

When I first bought this album, I was immediately disappointed by a few key things:
1. The absence of Adrian Smith and the presence of Janick Gers (not metal's worst guitarist, but hardly innovative or dyanmic)
2. The flat, lacksluster production
3. Some very uninspired songwriting
That being said, I almost threw this CD in the garbage before getting to the 5th track. However, I decided not to because it costed me [money] and was still a Maiden release.
After a while, some of the songs clicked with me. Tailgunner is an engaging tune, as well as Run Silent, Run Deep and Bring Your Daughter....To The Salughter, although none of them are as immediate or outward as Flight of Icarus or The Number of the Beast. Additionally, some tracks are really embarrassing (The Assassin sounds like a parody of early Iron Maiden and Holy Smoke is a total farce), making the album sound uneven and uninspired. And while I can usually tolerate lineup changes in most bands (take Zakk Wylde replacing Jake E. Lee in Ozzy Osbourne's band or Dickinson replacing Di'Anno in Maiden), Janick Gers is no match for Adrian Smith on guitar. There was a lot of energy in Smith's playing, but none in Ger's.
Overall, this an okay album for Maiden fans because it does have some decent material on it (though not enough). If you are not a Maiden fan or are one but only like their older output, steer clear of this one.

1 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2006-02-12

Iron Maiden is a great band, but this album is very very very very bad. I don't like this album one bit. This album is nothing compared to the Iron maiden album before this one. Don't buy this if you have a good taste of music, this isn't what Iron maiden sounds like, well it is, but it shouldn't be! Bruce Dickinson sings terrible on this album, he used to sing very good, but not here, he uses his voice on a strange way. AVOID THIS ALBUM ON ALL COSTS!

4 out of 5 stars Long string of smashes, then this one..........2002-05-11

Iron Maiden had a great run of releases, then this one came along. It doesn't compare to any of the previous five but it is better than Iron Maiden and Killers.

Unfortunately, Adrian Smith left the band, and for many IM fans, this was the beginnning of the end and for some reason, this album bears the brunt of that shock and/or anger. it shouldn't. It's a good release in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars I'm getting ready for all the negative reviews........2002-04-08

I am just writing before all the other people start talking about what a horrible album this is. What is so horrible about it? Absolutely nothing. The production is great, you can hear every instrument just right. There is someone else on guitar with dave, someone who is crazy on stage, and has a very mean guitar sound, it isnt adrian thats for sure. It is the most highly underrated guitarist probably to date, mr. jannick gers. The song writing is powerful, really deep, and is based on alot of personal issues.
If you think this album is not very good, then you shouldnt be a fan of killers, the # of the beast, piece of mind, and powerslave. Because this is the exact same concept with those albums, only there is a different outstanding guitarist on ending of the golden years for maiden. This is a simple album, it isnt a very complex one, yet it is filled with power driving riffs, and greatness. Nicko's drums are unstoppable, bruce is very heavy, I can understand if some people do not like his singing in this, I dont think it sounds like there is acid in his throat, but is just very raw.
Harris delivers his intense songwriting and bass playing as usual. Every song on here is worthy to listen too, there are favorites but every song is enjoyable. Last note, for all of those who are jannick haters, lets see if you can play the solos from tail gunner, holy smoke, run silent, run deep, and bring your daughter to the slaugher. Just try to play these 4 solos, and you will see what im talking about. I have been playing guitar for awhile now, and I know that gers is an awesome guitarist, and clicks with dave so sensationally. Thats why they recruited this man, it should be obvious. Anyway, im ready to see how unhelpful my vote is, ect. Just wanted to try and prove a point, hopefully at least 10 out of 100 people will see my review helpfull, and to the rest of you who dont, just try to play gers's riffs, and really listen to this album better. Cause yes it is definitely up to the normal maiden standards. UP THE IRONS!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Starry-Cast Forza.......2000-08-13

Although this performance has been previously issued complete (at least on LP), this well-filled disc of excerpts is a steal at the price. Sound is excellent and natural. The sadly neglected Stella reminds us how fortunate we would be to have her for this repertoire today. Simionato and Bastianini are at their best - enough said! Only Di Stefano inevitably disappoints with the remnants of a beautiful but, by 1960, irreparably abused voice. A wonderful souvenir of a great era in Verdi singing! Mitropoulos is perhaps not at his very best, but this was done shortly before his death when he was already exhausted; still Mitropoulos and the Vienna Philharminic could never be without interest.

    5 out of 5 stars truly a blowout.......2005-10-18

I've not heard anything quite like this album. like listening to urban psalms. Every cut real, relatable, spiritual and funky. I highly recommend it.

    2 out of 5 stars Lady Moses.......2002-06-15

Yo, MDD is hottt to Life fo J-E-S-U-S. I had the opportunity to minister on the same stage with this anointed man of GOD and i was touched and impressed at the same time. His lyrics are hardhitting, real, and Most of All ANOINTED! He is going to take the GOSPEL Scene to another level of course with wifee(Celeste Williams by his side:)I threw that in for free, MDD (LOL). On another note, the cd is Hottt and i can't stop playing it over and over cause it's real. Much love to you MDD, from Virtuous Sistazz worldwide. Much luv to ya and your success.

    5 out of 5 stars Youth Inspiring!!!!!.......2002-03-20

MDD - Prayer of a Dying Man -- Gives a full, across the board, for all ages...type of fresh air. The concepts and ideas behind each song, individually, is written with positive messages and gospel inspiration, without going into the "old school" way of holy~ness. Our youth will definitely appreciate the concepts and MDD will get and keep their attention and interest. The artist is truly blessed and his success is forthcoming. Best wishes to MDD, and keep the music coming!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Off the Hook and Anointed!!!!.......2002-03-14

There's not 1 bad song on the CD. Funky, but most of all anointed. Especially the title track "Prayer of a Dying Man". I was out in the world and God gave me a second chance so I can identify with the lyrics. The production is bangin'...and this guy produced every song on this hefty cd.
I agree with Ken..watch out!!! This guy is definitely going places...

4 out of 5 stars MDD is Hot!!!.......2002-03-09

MDD a.k.a. Modern Day David is one of the best writers, arrangers, producers in the business. His latest project "Prayer Of A Dying Man" proves all that and more! After several turns in my CD player I've come to the conclusion that this cd is OFF DA' CHAIN!! With his usage of infectious tracks and vocals that are a funky blend of R&B, Hip Hop and Soul, there is something on this cd for everyone. Like the funky hip hop track "Get Your Back Off The Wall" you won't be able to keep your seat. I can hear the hand claps and see the heads bobbin now! Oh and you got to check out the original beat on the other hip hop track "Movin On". With additional vocals by Brandi McAllister and rap by Kadence just gives mo' flava to an already flavorful track. And on the track "Child Of God" peeps are gonna bump to this! One of my favorite tracks is "It's All Good" which talks about the faith we all should have in God who sustains us. The track has that slow spiritual vibe. The vocals are hard hitting and penetrating! Man it goes without saying that this joint is tight! Yo' just listen to his CD - the more you hear the more your going to want to listen. I'm tellin' you MDD is HOT!! (Tonex watch out!)
